A quiet Week 1 for Colts’ tight end group vs. Texans

It was a quiet opening game for the Indianapolis Colts’ tight end group against the Houston Texans.

Facing the Houston Texans in their Week 1 matchup, it was a quiet game for the Indianapolis Colts’ tight end room.

Kylen Granson and Mo Alie-Cox each finished the game with one target and no receptions. The target that went Granson’s way also turned into an interception after he slipped on his route. Drew Ogletree wasn’t targeted at all.

So between the three tight ends, they played a combined 55 snaps and had two targets and no receptions.

Now, of course, when it comes to the tight end position, there are other ways for this group to impact the game, specifically as a blocker. And for what it’s worth, PFF did grade out  all three fairly well in the run-blocking category.

However, at the end of the day, what matters are results, and the Colts were largely ineffective in the run game, with Jonathan Taylor totaling just 48 yards on 16 carries.

To state the obvious, Taylor’s 3.0 yards per rush figure certainly doesn’t fall solely on the shoulders of the tight ends. But with that said, if there’s going to be minimal impact in the passing game, you would hope to see more results on the ground.

As GM Chris Ballard described before training camp, the Colts are taking a strength in numbers approach at the tight end position. While there isn’t that one go-to option like some teams have, internally, they do like the variety of skill sets that are in this room.

In theory, that can be advantageous, particularly from a game-planning perspective for Shane Steichen. But again, it all goes back to the results and impact, which were minimal in the first game.

Colts’ training camp roster preview: TE Kylen Granson

Up next in our Colts’ training camp roster preview is TE Kylen Granson. Here is a look back at 2023 and what could be ahead in 2024.

Veterans and rookies for the Indianapolis Colts will report for training camp on July 24th, with the first practice taking place on July 25th.

Between now and then I will be previewing the Colts’ 91-man roster with a look back at each player’s 2023 season, along with what’s ahead for 2024.

I’ll be going through the Colts’ roster alphabetically, so up next is tight end Kylen Granson. To stay up to date with our other previews, be sure to head over to Colts Wire.

2023 Season Review

Granson finished the 2023 season playing 496 snaps, the most on the team at the tight end position. Of his total snaps, 306 came on passing downs and 174 as a run-blocker.

In the passing game, Granson caught 30 of his 47 targets for 368 yards and one touchdown. He played 42 percent of his snaps from the slot and 46 percent as an in-line tight end. Granson’s 12.3 yards per catch was the fifth-highest rate among all tight ends.

“Kylen has made a bunch of plays here for us, but I am really happy with the consistency that he puts into everything he does,” tight ends coach Tom Manning said. “He is the same guy every day. His preparation is always very good and you have a very good idea of what you are going to get from Kylen when you go out to practice and gameday.”

For what it’s worth, his run-blocking grade from PFF ranked 65th out of 83 eligible tight ends.

2024 Season Preview

Granson, a 2021 fourth-round pick by the Colts, is entering the final year of his rookie deal with the team. He will once again be an important part of the Colts’ offense filling to do-it-all move tight end role.

Having a tight end who is versatile enough to be moved around the formation and who can impact both the running and passing games can add a layer of unpredictability to an offense, with that player making it more difficult for defenses to decipher pre-snap what might be coming.

“He’s got great route-running ability,” said Shane Steichen last season. “I’m really pleased where he’s at. He understands the game of football really well. He understands leverage, technique, all those different things – how to get himself open,” Steichen told reporters Thursday. “Really pleased with where he’s at and his route-running ability and also as a blocker.”

The top spot on the Colts’ tight end depth chart could be up for grabs this summer with the return of Jelani Woods, who is now fully healthy. However, as I’ve mentioned previously, with this tight end room having a variety of skill sets, several players within that room are going to see their share of playing time this season.

In addition to Granson, the Colts have Will Mallory, a 2023 fifth-round pick, who played 159 snaps last season. As Mallory continues to develop, he can fill a similar role as Granson, although it remains to be seen if Mallory will eat into Granson’s playing time this year–not to mention that with Woods, there could also be fewer opportunities in the passing game for Granson.

Is there fantasy value to be found among Indianapolis Colts TEs?

Could a sleeper emerge from Indy’s tight end lot?

The Indianapolis Colts are still waiting to fully turn the page to a new era with quarterback Anthony Richardson, who flashed his dynamic ability as a rookie but was limited to just four games due to injuries. As a result, we have yet to see how he will mesh with his tight ends, Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson and Mo Alie-Cox.

Potentially one of the deeper tight end rooms in the league, the problem for fantasy production may be that none of them will be viewed as head-and-shoulders better than the other two. A TE-by-committee rarely produces fantasy stars.

Studs and duds from Colts’ 29-10 loss to Falcons

Studs and duds from the Colts’ loss to the Falcons.

The Indianapolis Colts (8-7) failed to take care of business on the road in a 29-10 loss against the Atlanta Falcons (7-8) on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

It was a sloppy game all around for the Colts, who were dominated on both sides of the ball. Neither the offensive line nor the defensive line found ways to generate any consistent push, allowing the Falcons to control the line of scrimmage with ease.

This was a setback for a team that looked primed for a wild-card spot and while not all hope is lost in that endeavor, this defeat certainly muddies the outlook for the final two games.

Here’s a look at the studs and duds from the Week 16 loss:

Colts rule out two players vs. Panthers in Week 9

Two players were ruled out for Week 9.

The Indianapolis Colts ruled out right tackle Braden Smith and cornerback Julius Brents ahead of the Week 9 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, according to head coach Shane Steichen on Friday.

It’s no surprise that both of those players were ruled out considering they didn’t log a single practice. This will be Brents’ second consecutive missed game due to a quad injury he suffered in Week 7.

Meanwhile, Smith will miss his fourth consecutive game due to hip and wrist injuries.

As it pertains to linebacker Zaire Franklin, who is dealing with a knee injury, he is considered a game-time decision.

Smith’s expected replacement, rookie Blake Freeland, is also a game-time decision after suffering a back injury during practice this week. It isn’t clear who would start right tackle if both Smith and Freeland are out, but there’s a chance it would be Arlington Hambright.

Tight end Kylen Granson cleared the concussion protocol so he will be expected to play.

The Colts will release their final injury report with designations later Friday so that will give us a better idea of what the injury situation looks like.

Notes

  • CB Julius Brents is not expected to practice this week and is likely to miss his second consecutive game.
  • LB Zaire Franklin picked up a knee injury during the Week 8 loss. He exited briefly before returning and finishing the game. DE Dayo Odeyingbo is also a new addition to the injury report compared to last week.
  • RT Braden Smith still has not practiced since suffering a hip injury during Thursday’s practice in Week 6. His status is still up in the air for this week.
  • TE Kylen Granson appears ready to return after missing the last two games. The same goes for DT Eric Johnson II, who was inactive in Week 8.

  • RT Braden Smith hasn’t practiced since injuring his hip during the Thursday practice in Week 6. He will miss his third consecutive game.
  • DT Eric Johnson II has been trending in the right direction all week and his full participation status Friday is encouraging for his chances to play.
  • The fact that RB Zack Moss was downgraded Friday after being a limited participant the day before may suggest he didn’t respond well to practicing. He’s likely a game-time decision.
  • CB Tony Brown was a new addition to the report Friday so there’s a chance the Colts are without two cornerbacks.

Colts rule out 3 players vs. Saints in Week 8

Three Colts have been ruled out for Week 8.

The Indianapolis Colts ruled out three players Friday ahead of the Week 8 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

Those three players include cornerback Julius Brents (quad), right tackle Braden Smith (hip/wrist) and tight end Kylen Granson (concussion).

Brents was not expected to play this week after suffering a quad injury during the Week 8 loss against the Cleveland Browns. In his place, fellow rookie Jaylon Jones will likely get the start while Darrell Baker Jr. also should see an uptick in snaps.

It also wouldn’t be a surprise if Ameer Speed made his Colts debut after he was claimed off waivers last week.

Smith will miss his third consecutive game due to a hip injury he suffered during the Thursday practice before the Week 6 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He hasn’t practiced since the injury. It will be rookie Blake Freeland making his third consecutive start right right tackle and his fifth consecutive start overall.

Granson will miss his second consecutive game due to a concussion, but he was seen wearing the red non-contact jersey at Friday’s practice, which suggests he’s making progress through the concussion protocol.

The Colts will release the full injury report with designations later Friday afternoon.
