See Khris Middleton’s clutch game-winning OT jumper to help Bucks beat Heat

The NBA playoffs are off to a thrilling start after Khris Middleton’s game winner in overtime.

The NBA playoffs are off to a rousing start following the first game between the Milwaukee Bucks and Miami Heat, which culminated in an overtime game-winning jumper by Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton that helped set the tone for the start of the postseason.

With the game tied at 107-107 with 20.6 seconds remaining, Middleton hit the game-winning shot with less than a second left on the clock to give the Bucks a 109-107 win and a 1-0 series lead on Saturday afternoon.

The Bucks and Heat battled down to the wire in Game 1, where Milwaukee’s offensive stars shined as Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jrue Holiday and Middleton combined for 73 of the team’s 109 points.

Middleton led the Bucks with 27 points and added six rebounds and six assists.

Milwaukee got a little payback against the Heat, who defeated them in the second round of the NBA playoffs last year. But if Saturday’s game is any indication, this is going to be a hard-fought series from start to finish. Thanks to Middleton, the Bucks have a 1-0 cushion.

The Bucks and Heat will meet for Game 2 of the first round on Monday night at Fiserv Forum.

3 observations: Giannis Antetokounmpo, hot shooting Bucks get past Sixers

Khris Middleton and the Milwaukee Bucks were too much to handle as they knocked off the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday.

The Philadelphia 76ers had a tough challenge on Thursday night. They were coming off two straight home losses, including one on Wednesday, and then had to board a plane to face the well-rested Milwaukee Bucks on the road. On top of that, they were still shorthanded as they were missing Ben Simmons in this one.

All of that mixed together caused for a tough night as the Bucks, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, knocked off Philadelphia 124-117 at home in a game that was not as close as the score suggests. Antetokounmpo had 27 points with 14 rebounds and six assists for the Bucks and Milwaukee shot 20-for-40 from deep as a team as they just had more energy than the Sixers in this one.

Joel Embiid had 24 points on 9-for-21 shooting to lead Philadelphia, Tobias Harris had 18 points and six assists in his return, Shake Milton had 20 points, Seth Curry had 11, and Tyrese Maxey added 11 and four assists with Mike Scott adding 11.

Here are the three observations from the loss:

Bucks at Lakers: Prediction, point spread, odds, over/under, betting picks

The Los Angeles Lakers are massive underdogs in what will be their last home game for two weeks.

The Los Angeles Lakers get their first look at Andre Drummond in purple and gold on Wednesday night. However, Drummond’s first game with the Lakers isn’t projected to be a walk in the park. The Lakers welcome one of the best teams in the NBA and the two-time reigning MVP, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Bucks, despite their pedigree, have struggled as of late, losing their last three games. Their last loss was their worst one of the stretch, a 24-point loss to a Clippers team playing without Paul George. But with all of that being understood, the Bucks are still a much deeper team than what the Lakers currently are.

Advice and prediction

The Lakers should be feeling good after their defense helped them scrape out two wins they needed to stay in front of Denver and Portland in the Western Conference standings. Montrezl Harrell’s consistent scoring has also been key to the success of the Lakers, which is something they will need again on Wednesday.

But even if Harrell has a good game and the Lakers supporting cast gets their 3-pointers to go, they’re going to have a difficult time keeping pace with the Bucks. While they are down two key players in Bobby Portis and PJ Tucker, the Bucks still have their key frontline players. They’ve been in a bad way over the past week and Drummond’s debut likely has created more momentum for the Lakers to make this interesting. I don’t see it against the Bucks, who can still deliver a blowout, even coming off a losing streak.

Prediction: Bucks 132, Lakers 110

3 takeaways from Thunder loss to Bucks in rematch

The OKC Thunder were unable to beat the Milwaukee Bucks in the rematch as Giannis Antetokounmpo posted 29 points, 19 boards and 8 assists.

After falling behind by 22 points, the Oklahoma City Thunder put on a comeback run against the Milwaukee Bucks. A strong start to the fourth quarter pulled the deficit to seven.

They wouldn’t get closer, though, as Milwaukee Bucks stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton put the game away and handed the Thunder a 98-85 loss.

In a game with little offense, the Thunder were unable to produce with all three of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Theo Maledon and Al Horford in the lineup for the first time since Feb. 1.

Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 14 points on 3-for-12 shooting. Five Thunder players scored at least 10, but Lu Dort’s 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting was the highest output on the team.

Antetokounmpo had another monster game, finishing with 29 points, 19 rebounds and eight assists, while Middleton provided 20 points and eight rebounds.

Oklahoma City’s defense was very strong, but the offense couldn’t match the output.

What adjustments do the Bucks need to come back against the Heat?

The Milwaukee Bucks took three consecutive losses against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals but bounced back in Game Four.

Led by Giannis Antetokounpo, who is questionable for Game 5, the Bucks were defined this season by their speed and how many more possessions they squeezed out than other teams in the league. But if there was any team in the NBA built to slow down the No. 1 seed in the East, it was Miami. Their bulldog defensive mentality, exemplified most by Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, has created an unimaginable stretch for Milwaukee.

The Bucks needed just 10.9 seconds to get their shots off in the regular season, per InPredictable, which was the quickest among all teams in the East. Yet teams took 12.1 seconds per shot against the Heat, which was the slowest average in the league.

Even though Milwaukee played at the fastest-pace (105.5) of all teams in the league during the regular season, their pace dropped (97.3) significantly in the series against Miami. Note that this pace was below average (100.3) for an NBA team in 2019-20.

This was concerning because, during their regular season, they finished in transition (18.5 percent) more often than any team in the league. This fell quite a bit during both the first game (12.2 percent) and second game (10.4 percent) of the series, getting the Bucks out of rhythm. This rate was also quite low (12.7 percent) in the sole game they have won.

Bucks’ All-Star Khris Middleton spoke about the impact this has had on his  (via Miami Herald):

“On the offensive end, we just gotta play with more tempo. The Heat is doing a great job of slowing us down and making us play a little bit more in the half court.”

Of course, this has had a drastic impact on the scoring of the series as well. In the regular season, via Synergy, Milwaukee averaged 25.4 points per game when finishing in transition. Yet they have scored just 16.3 points per game in the open court during the first four games of the Eastern Semifinals thus far.

In close games, this difference is enough to swing a typical victory for them into a loss. They have been outscored by 5.4 points per 100 possessions thus far, so the dropoff in scoring is significant.

Another element that forced Milwaukee to look completely different was the frequency at which they took shots from beyond the arc.

Only three teams took three-pointers more often than the Bucks did (39.4 percent) during the NBA regular season. One of the reasons this is so important to their offense is because when there are more defenders guarding the perimeter, there is inevitably more room for the reigning MVP to explode near the rim.

Meanwhile, when defenses collapse on to Antetokounmpo within five feet of the basket, shooters are left open for easy looks. The relationship is symbiotic and it is much harder for one to exist cohesively without the other.

The Bucks led the East with 30.4 field goal attempts from above the arc, defined as three-pointers excluding non-corner looks. But they were just 4-for-15 (26.7 percent) from this zone during the second game of the series.

Even though just NBA two allowed more 3-pointers (37.7) per game than the Heat did in the regular season, Miami has consistently done a phenomenal job defending jump shots off the catch. In fact, the Heat recorded the second-most efficient defense (1.03 PPP) in the East when guarding catch-and-shoot jumpers in the regular season.

It will be challenging for Milwaukee to come back from a 3-1 deficit to help save their season, especially with Antetokounmpo struggling health-wise. But for them to have any chance of doing such, they will need to pick up the pace and create more opportunities from beyond the arc.

Draymond Green reacts to the controversial late foul calls in Heat vs. Bucks Game 2

Following the Heat’s game two win over the Bucks, Draymond Green chimed in on Twitter with a reaction to the late controversial foul calls.

On Wednesday, the Miami Heat took a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs.

Steady performances from Goran Dragic and Tyler Herro pushed Erik Spoelstra’s squad past Giannis Antetokounmpo in game two. However, the game will be remembered for a pair of controversial foul calls in the final moments of the contest.

With 7.7 seconds remaining, the Heat led the game by three points when Khris Middleton pulled up for a deep attempt from beyond the arc over Dragic. Referee Marc Davis called a foul on the Miami guard, sending Middleton to the free-throw line with a chance to tie the game.

Via @SportsCenter on Twitter:

The Bucks All-Star wing knocked down all three free throws, tying the game at 114 with 4.3 seconds remaining. On the next possession, another whistle was blown. As Jimmy Butler pulled up for a jumper at the buzzer, Antetokounmpo was called for a shooting foul.

Via @BleacherReport on Twitter:

With the clock sitting on double-zeros, Butler buried a free throw to seal Miami’s game two victory.

After the game, a member of the Golden State Warriors chimed in on Twitter with thoughts on the “tough” late foul calls. While he’s had his fair share of battles with officiating in the past, Draymond Green tweeted the referees were “probably right” on each call.

Via @Money23Green on Twitter:

Green’s former Golden State teammate Andre Iguodala added four points on 1-of-2 shooting from the field with two rebounds and two assists in 11 minutes against Milwaukee.

Iguodala, Butler and the Heat will lace up for the chance to move to a 3-0 lead in the series against the Bucks on Friday at 3:30 P.M. PT.

Joel Embiid reacts to Jimmy Butler, wild ending of Heat win over Bucks

Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid reacts to Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat upsetting the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Philadelphia 76ers may be out of the bubble after being bounced early by the Boston Celtics in the playoffs, but that does not mean that they are going to mentally check out from the rest of the playoffs.

There are still some interesting matchups left in the playoffs and one of them includes a former Sixer in the form of Jimmy Butler. On Wednesday night, Butler stepped to the line with zero seconds showing on the clock and he drilled them both to give the Miami Heat a 116-114 win over the Milwaukee Bucks to take a 2-0 series lead.

The ending to the game was wild as Heat guard Goran Dragic was called for a very questionable foul while Bucks All-Star Khris Middleton was shooting a triple. Middleton made all three to tie the game at 114. It was a call that Sixers big man Joel Embiid was shocked about.

On the other end, Butler was then fouled at the buzzer by Giannis Antetokounmpo on another very questionable call. It was another shocking call as the officials seemed to be making up for the call on the other end. Embiid then got a kick out of that one.

Butler then stepped up to drill the free throws and Embiid then made a reference to soccer star Neymar Jr. making a penalty kick for the win. Neymar Jr. is a friend of Butler’s and both Butler and Embiid are avid soccer fans.

It was an absolute wild ending, but the 5 seed Heat now have the top seed Bucks on the ropes in Round 2 of the playoffs. Antetokounmpo and the rest of the Bucks have to dig deep and get it done in Game 3. [lawrence-related id=37373,37370,37366]
