Kevin Strong released due to personal issue, could return in 2024

Strong had a career season. There is the belief that he could be re-signed by the Cardinals at some point.

The Arizona Cardinals made a surprise release in Week 18 leading up to their final game of the season, releasing defensive lineman Kevin Strong. He had not been playing poorly.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon’s only comment about the roster move was that it was “what’s best for the team.”

Howard Balzer reported it was a personal matter that led to Strong’s release but that things were handled amicably.

Balzer noted that there is hope and positive belief he could be re-signed down the line.

Strong finished the season appearing 14 games, starting 11 of them. He had 46 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery. He set career-highs in every category but games played and pass breakups.

Former Titans DL Kevin Strong agrees to terms with Cardinals

Former Titans DL Kevin Strong has agreed to terms with the Cardinals.

Former Tennessee Titans defensive lineman Kevin Strong has found a new home with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to terms with Strong on a one-year deal. The financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Strong spent a season-plus with the Titans, first coming aboard in November of 2021 when he was signed to the practice squad. The 26-year-old appeared in 16 games (one start) in 2022, tallying 23 tackles and two passes defensed.

The most memorable moment for Strong in Tennessee wasn’t a good one, as his Week 12 unnecessary roughness penalty against the Cincinnati Bengals thwarted Tennessee’s chances of winning the game.

The former undrafted free agent out of Texas-San Antonio already has a connection to his new team, as former Titans director of player personnel, Monti Ossenfort, was hired as the Cardinals’ general manager earlier this offseason.

On top of his stint in Tennessee, Strong also spent time with the Detroit Lions.

Cardinals to sign former Titans DL Kevin Strong

Strong played for the Titans the last two seasons after two with the Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals have finally addressed the defensive line. After J.J. Watt retired and Zach Allen left in free agency, they have added a former Tennessee Titans player.

The team announced a one-year deal agreed upon with defensive lineman Kevin Strong.

The 6-foot-4, 295-pound defensive lineman has ties to both general manager Monti Ossenfort and assistant general manager Dave Sears.

Strong entered the league as an undrafted rookie out of UTSA with the Detroit Lions, where Sears was director of college scouting. He was there through one game of 2021 before landing with the Titans, where Ossenfort was director of player personnel.

After playing partial seasons, appearing in no more than eight games in each of his first three seasons, he played in 16 last season for Tennessee. He had 23 tackles and two pass breakups. He also added two quarterback pressures.

He will likely play on the interior of the defensive line and compete for playing time with Rashard Lawrence and Leki Fotu, the only other defensive linemen under contract.

Kevin Strong surprised by penalty vs. Bengals, but Kevin Byard was not

Titans DL Kevin Strong didn’t think he committed a penalty, but S Kevin Byard had a different opinion.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”9SznyIzWmb-2388744-7498″]

Despite all of their issues on the offensive side of the ball in Week 12, the Tennessee Titans had a chance to even the score late in the fourth quarter; however, a penalty thwarted that chance.

With the Cincinnati Bengals attempting a field goal to make it a seven-point game with just under two minutes left, Kevin Strong was flagged for an unnecessary roughness penalty after making contact with the snapper’s head.

There will no doubt be those out there who will say that was a soft call, but the fact that Strong even came close to doing such a thing is completely inexcusable.

After the game, Strong said he was surprised by the penalty but still took accountability for it.

“Yeah, I am, but I’ve just got to be better,” Strong said when asked if he was surprised by the flag. “I thought I did my job, I didn’t know I did anything wrong.”

“I was just trying to get in the “A” gap,” Strong continued. “Like I said, I wasn’t intentionally hitting him in the head. I made a mistake and I take that one and put it on me. I just have to do better for my teammates next week.”

Titans safety Kevin Byard was a bit more sure with his reaction to the penalty, saying it was legit.

“Looked like two guys hit the snapper,” Byard said. “So, I mean, I don’t know what else we should expect… they threw the flag.”

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t give his opinion one way or the other, saying he needs to take another look at it. He also rightly noted that the penalty wasn’t the reason the Titans lost this game.

And he’s right; it was simply the nail in the coffin.

What Titans said about Week 12 loss to Bengals

What Mike Vrabel, Kevin Strong and the Titans had to say about the Week 12 game against the Bengals.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”9SznyIzWmb-2388744-7498″]

The Tennessee Titans no doubt let one get away in their 20-16 Week 12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Sunday. The theme of the game was the inability to finish.

The Titans’ offense was able to move the ball through the air with quite a bit of success on Sunday, but the offense simply couldn’t finish drives. It also didn’t help that Derrick Henry had zero room to run.

Even with all their issues, the Titans would’ve had an opportunity to tie the game with just under two minutes remaining but a terrible penalty on defensive lineman Kevin Strong thwarted that.

While the penalty was terrible, the Titans lost this game in the red zone with an 0-3 showing in an area where they have been elite all season long. Now, Tennessee goes to Philly next week off this ugly loss.

Here’s what the Titans had to say about it:

Keeping up with some former Lions around the league

Here are a few notable former Lions and what’s going on with them around the NFL

The NFL’s daily transaction wire has featured a few former Detroit Lions players in the last few days. A couple made the news feed, too. Here are a few notable former Lions and what’s going on with them around the NFL.

Tennessee Titans’ practice squad protections for Week 14

The Titans are protecting the same players for the second straight game.

The Tennessee Titans have chosen the four players they will protect on their practice squad for the Week 14 contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars — and it’s the same four they protected for their last game in Week 12.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the Titans are protecting quarterback Kevin Hogan, cornerback Breon Borders, defensive lineman Kevin Strong, and wide receiver Cody Hollister.

All four of these players saw snaps in Week 12 against the New England Patriots.

Chances are we won’t see Hogan elevated this week, as the Titans recently activated backup quarterback Logan Woodside off the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

With the Titans thin at wide receiver due to the injury to A.J. Brown, and at cornerback because of Jackrabbit Jenkins’ injury, we could see Borders and Hollister get the nod once again.

Strong’s chances of seeing the field will likely depend upon what happens with Teair Tart, who was ruled out in Week 12 with an ankle issue.

The Titans will return to action on Sunday when they host the Jaguars, with kickoff set for noon CT.
