2025 5-Star TE Davon Mitchell sets commitment date

One of the top players in the 2025 class, Davon Mitchell, sets commitment date.

The Oklahoma Sooners are just over a month away from finding out about one of their top targets in the 2025 recruiting cycle. Five-star tight end Davon Mitchell announced via Twitter that he’ll be committing on July 8.

Mitchell is currently ranked as a top 50 player across the board, and 247Sports sees him as a top 20 player in the 2025 class. He’s the No. 1 tight end in the cycle and ranks as the No. 2 player in the state of California.

Davon Mitchell transferred to Los Alamitos High School after starting his high school career at Allen High School, the same place Michael Hawkins first started on varsity.

In addition to the Oklahoma Sooners, Alabama, Miami, Texas A&M, and Texas are in the running for the elite tight-end prospect.

The Sooners are already off to a strong start in the 2025 recruiting class with commitments from four-star quarterback [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag] and four-star wide receiver [autotag]Gracen Harris[/autotag]. They’re also making positive headway in their recruitment of four-star wide receiver [autotag]Adrian Wilson[/autotag].

Mitchell is an athletic tight end that can make plays in the passing game and move the needle as a run blocker as well. His athleticism really shows up in the red zone, where he can get above the rim and high point the football and also has the size to box out defenders as well.

A commitment from Mitchell would give the Sooners their highest-rated tight end prospect in the 247Sports database. All eyes will be tuned in on July 8 to see which team Mitchell pledges to play for.

ESPN’s early Junior 300 rankings includes two Oklahoma commits

While they continue to build their 2024 class, Oklahoma is off to a promising start to 2025 with two commits in ESPN’s Junior 300.

The class of 2024 is the recruiting class at the forefront of the college football world. Those student-athletes are preparing for their final years of high school football and looking to decide where their next destinations will be. Oklahoma already has a top 30 class, and you can be sure they will continue to ascend as the months wear on.

The 2025 class is starting to see their recruitments pick up. The contact between players and coaching staff transitions from preliminary introductions to building bonds and trust. Plenty of players have committed to schools despite being unable to take any official visits yet. Oklahoma has put in work for the class of 2025 and is one of schools with multiple commitments so far. ESPN published its first iteration of the ESPN Junior 300, and a pair of Oklahoma commitments are represented.

Oklahoma’s chosen QB for the class of 2025 and its first commit, [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag], checks in at No. 131. [autotag]Gracen Harris[/autotag], one of Texas high school football’s best slot receivers, checks in at No. 101. Both prospects are rated four-star recruits by ESPN.

Oklahoma joins Georgia, Alabama, and Penn State as schools with multiple commits from ESPN’s Junior 300. Georgia leads the way as the reigning national champions already have seven commitments from the ESPN 300  for 2025.

Outside of the two commits the Sooners already have, there are some notable names in the rankings that the Sooners actively recruiting.

[autotag]Davon Mitchell[/autotag], a five-star tight end in the rankings, is among the most notable of the uncommitted. Mitchell is the best friend and former teammate of Oklahoma’s four-star 2024 QB commit [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag]. Mitchell has been projected to land with the Oklahoma Sooners for some time. That would be a significant commitment marking Jeff Lebby’s second five-star commit as offensive coordinator.

Five-star wide receiver Dakorien Moore from Duncanville High School has a well-known connection with Sooners wide receivers coach Emmett Jones. Oklahoma figures to be prominent in recruiting the Texas powerhouse due to Jones’ ties with the school and the North Texas area.

Oklahoma has also offered four-star receivers [autotag]Andrew Marsh[/autotag] and [autotag]Isaiah Mozee[/autotag]. The early commitments from Kevin Sperry and Gracen Harris will help them, especially amongst prospects from the state of Texas.

Oklahoma Sooners QB situation ranked top 5 by On3 Sports

On3 Sports ranked the Oklahoma Sooners among the top quarterback rooms in the country ahead of the 2023 college football season.

For years, the Oklahoma Sooners had one of the stronger quarterback situations in the country. Since [autotag]Bob Stoops[/autotag] brought the air-raid offense to Norman with him through the [autotag]Lincoln Riley[/autotag] era, the Sooners have had great quarterback play for much of the last 25 years.

Jeff Lebby’s first year in Norman kept the offensive prowess on the right track, as the Sooners averaged 32.8 points per game. Though not without issues in 2022, the Sooners had one of the better quarterbacks in the Big 12 last season with Dillon Gabriel. Throw five-star quarterback Jackson Arnold into the mix, and the Sooners have one of the best quarterbacks situations in the country heading into 2023.

Jesse Simonton of On3 ranked the top quarterback rooms in the country, and the depth chart headlined by [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag], [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] and [autotag]Davis Beville[/autotag] came in at No. 5.

While Brent Venables’ top offseason priority is to fix the Sooners’ leaky defense, Oklahoma should feel really good about its two QB options entering 2023.

Former UCF transfer Dillion Gabriel is back for a second season in Norman after throwing for over 3,100 yards and 25 touchdowns last season, but the veteran is being pushed by 5-star freshman Jackson Arnold, who some consider one of the most ready-made QBs in a loaded 2023 class. Either way, Venables has two nice options entering a pivotal fall for the Sooners. – Simonton, On3 Sports

The Sooners came in behind USC, LSU, Texas and North Carolina in Simonton’s rankings. One can understand the Trojans coming in at No. 1. They return Heisman Trophy winner [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] and bring in [autotag]Malachi Nelson[/autotag], a highly-regarded five-star quarterback in the 2024 class.

However, USC is the only one that’s an obvious choice.

LSU has a good quarterback room headlined by [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], but much of the Tigers’ success stemmed from elite defensive play and Daniels’ ability to protect the football. At Texas, Quinn Ewers had a solid season, but much of his projection is based on the natural ability, which has not translated to elite performances on the football field. North Carolina gets a boost simply because of [autotag]Drake Maye[/autotag]. If the Tar Heels suffer an injury to Maye, who many are projecting as the No. 2 quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft class, as Simonton puts it, “UNC might be screwed.”

Regardless of where you rank them, the Sooners’ quarterback situation is in great hands with [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] and [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag].

Gabriel is one of the most experienced players at the position with 38 starts under his belt. Oklahoma has to be better on third down and in the red zone, but if they can do that, they’ll be one of the best offenses in the country. Gabriel is one of the highest-graded quarterbacks returning for 2023, according to Pro Football Focus, and came in at No. 2 in College Sports Wire’s Big 12 quarterback rankings.

Arnold had an incredible two-year run at Denton Guyer during his junior and senior seasons, parlaying that into five-star rating. He won the Elite 11 MVP and the Gatorade National Player of the Year award. Though he might not play much in 2023 if Gabriel stays healthy, he’s the future at the position for the Oklahoma Sooners. And that future looks bright with Arnold and 2024 four-star quarterback [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag] and 2025 four-star quarterback [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag] coming down the line.

Oklahoma Sooners among On3’s recruiting winners for April

After landing five commitments in the month of April the Sooners were included among On3’s winners on the recruiting trail.

For the second consecutive month, the Oklahoma Sooners were included among On3’s winners on the recruiting trail.

In March, 2025 four-star quarterback [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag] started the ball rolling, and four-star cornerback [autotag]Jeremiah Newcombe[/autotag] broke the ice on the 2024 recruiting class. Since the Newcombe commitment, the Sooners have landed five more prospects for 2024: quarterback [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag], wide receivers [autotag]K.J. Daniels[/autotag] and [autotag]Zion Kearney[/autotag], offensive tackle [autotag]Isaiah Autry[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Jaydan Hardy[/autotag].

Here’s what On3’s Keegan Pope had to say.

The Sooners had one of the slower starts to this cycle, with just one commitment heading into April. It was a banner month for Brent Venables and Co., highlighted by landing On3’s No. 10 wide receiver [autotag]Zion Kearney[/autotag]. The big playmaker out of Missouri City (Texas) caught 39 passes for 765 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022 and has terrific speed.

OU also landed commitments from four-star safety [autotag]Jaydan Hardy[/autotag], coveted quarterback [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag], massive offensive tackle prospect [autotag]Isaiah Autry[/autotag] and emerging wide receiver [autotag]Kelly Daniels[/autotag]. They now sit at No. 15 in the team recruiting rankings after being unranked this time a month ago and have momentum with a couple of elite targets like [autotag]David Stone[/autotag] and [autotag]Bryant Wesco[/autotag]. – Pope, On3 Recruiting

Oklahoma may be off to a slower start than some of the top programs in the country, but that’s by design. They’re working quicker than they did a year ago when they only had a few commitments heading into the month of June.

The Sooners [autotag]2024 recruiting class[/autotag] is six players deep and consists of four blue-chip prospects, headlined by top-75 prospect Zion Kearney.

As Pope mentions, the Sooners are making strong progress in their recruitment of Wesco, Stone, [autotag]Williams Nwaneri[/autotag]and [autotag]Joseph Jonah-Ajonye[/autotag].

The ball is officially rolling for Oklahoma in 2024. It has moved inside the top 25 of 247Sports team recruiting rankings and will climb higher in the coming months. If last summer is any indication, the Sooners will be in the top 10 by the time fall camp rolls around.

Oklahoma lands two sport athlete in 2025 4-star WR Gracen Harris

Oklahoma continues to build its 2025 class landing a commitment from composite four-star receiver Gracen Harris.

The class of 2025 has gotten off to a much quicker start than Oklahoma’s [autotag]2024 recruiting class[/autotag], with just under two years until 2025 national signing day.

The first day of May brings the Sooners their second commitment of the [autotag]2025 recruiting class[/autotag]. Composite four-star wide receiver Gracen Harris announced his commitment to Oklahoma Football on Monday afternoon. He chose the Sooners over offers from schools such as Florida State, Baylor, and TCU.

[autotag]Gracen Harris[/autotag] hails from Ennis, Texas, and has been firmly on the Sooners’ radar the moment they landed wide receivers coach [autotag]Emmett Jones[/autotag]. Following his hiring, a crystal ball prediction was submitted for the Sooners to land the talented slot wide receiver after receiving his offer.

The momentum kept building for Oklahoma and never stopped as other predictions continued favoring Oklahoma’s chances.

Harris fits Jeff Lebby’s offense due to his ability to win from the slot. He has the speed to win vertically via slot fades but can also win with in-breaking routes and screens as well.

In 2022, Harris was named a Texas District 5-5A-II first-team selection at inside WR. The year before, he was Texas District 8-5A-II Offensive Newcomer of the Year. He’s a productive and proven slot wide receiver, and that’s where he will be deployed for the Sooners.

When not playing football, he is also a star on the baseball diamond, where he was offered a scholarship by Oklahoma Baseball head coach Skip Johnson. It seems likely Harris will double dip and be a dual sport athlete at the University of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma’s most notable dual sport athlete, [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag], was the No. 1 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019 and the No. 9 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft.

Harris’ commitment continues to validate Oklahoma’s decision to hire Emmett Jones.

Known for his ability to recruit, Jones has already received three commitments since being hired in January. His highest-rated target, five-star wideout [autotag]Bryant Wesco[/autotag], is still uncommitted, but Jones’ efforts have the Sooners in the lead for him as well.

2025 QB commit Kevin Sperry is now joined by Gracen Harris as Oklahoma works on building two recruiting classes at once.

Oklahoma Sooners land commitment from four-star QB Michael Hawkins

Oklahoma lands commitment from 2024 quarterback Michael Hawkins!

After much anticipation, the Sooners have their quarterback for the 2024 recruiting class. Four-star quarterback Michael Hawkins committed to the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday.

Hawkins, an OU legacy, whittled his recruitment down to TCU and Oklahoma. Before TCU was a finalist, it was Arkansas due to Hawkins’ relationship with Kendal Briles. Briles left his offensive coordinator post at Arkansas to take the same position with the Horned Frogs following the departure of Garrett Riley to Clemson.

Hawkins’s familiarity with Jeff Lebby won out. TCU was also recruiting another quarterback in three-star prospect Hauss Hejny, a TCU legacy.

Hejny committed to TCU earlier this week, which seemed to be the writing on the wall of Hawkins to Oklahoma.

With Hawkins in the fold, Oklahoma’s quarterback room looks like one of the best in the country over the next few years. Dillon Gabriel is the starter in 2023. Getting Jackson Arnold’s signature for the 2023 cycle followed by Hawkins in 2024 and Kevin Sperry in 2025, the Sooners look loaded for their move to the SEC.

In landing Hawkins, the Sooners get a dual-threat QB with remarkable accuracy. He put that accuracy on display at the UA Next showcase earlier this year, when he took home the accuracy award.

Hawkins was named a Texas District 5-6A first-team selection as a junior at Allen High School before transferring to Frisco Emerson for his senior year.

Hawkins’ commitment also has ripple effects for the class of 2025. This puts Oklahoma closer to landing his former teammate at Allen High School, five-star tight end Davon Mitchell. It also makes Maliek Hawkins, Michael’s younger brother, a genuine candidate to be a Sooner come 2025 signing day.

Hawkins joins four-star cornerback Jeremiah Newcombe in the 2024 recruiting class.

Hawkins and the rest of the Sooners staff can now turn their attention to securing offensive talent in the 2024 recruiting class. The Sooners are hoping to land wide receivers Bryant Wesco, Zion Kearney, and Isaiah McMorris as well as a trio of running backs like Caden Durham, Xavier Robinson, Tovani Mizell.

Oklahoma Sooners On3 recruiting winners for the month of March

After picking up a pair of commitments in the month of March, the Oklahoma Sooners were one of On3’s big recruiting winners.

The 2024 recruiting cycle had been relatively quiet for Oklahoma heading into March. They were generating a lot of buzz on the trail, but no one had committed to the Sooners yet.

As the calendar’s shifted to April, things are a bit different now.

The Sooners picked up commitments in the 2024 and 2025 recruiting classes and, because of it, were named one of five winners for the month of March by On3’s Keegan Pope.

After a monstrous close to the 2023 cycle, including flipping five-star safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] away from Oregon in December, Oklahoma has been taking things show in 2024.

Heading into March, they didn’t have a single commitment, but four-star defensive back [autotag]Jeremiah Newcombe[/autotag] changed that with his decision earlier this month. Now the Sooners weren’t the only program to get a 2024 commitment, but what put them on this list is the addition of 2025 quarterback [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag].

The Prosper (Texas) Rock Hill star is one of the country’s top passers in the rising junior class, and he immediately gives Brent Venables an early cornerstone to build his 2025 class around. – Pope, On3

The Newcombe commitment came like a gust down the Oklahoma plains. Out of nowhere. The Sooners had him in town for a visit and then the predictions favoring Oklahoma showered down like a mid-Spring thunderstorm. The four-star prospect out of Arizona didn’t waste any time, committing to the Sooners just a few days after his visit. With the commitment, [autotag]Jeremiah Newcombe[/autotag] became the first of the 2024 recruiting cycle for [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and the Sooners.

Interestingly, beating Newcombe to the punch was 2025 quarterback Kevin Sperry. Sperry, who spent time with the Sooners during a camp last Summer, eagerly awaited the offer from [autotag]Jeff Lebby[/autotag] and Oklahoma. Like Newcombe, he didn’t waste any time, giving the Sooners their quarterback for the 2025 class.

As Pope mentions, [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag] gives the Sooners a cornerstone to build around. Like with [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] in the 2023 cycle, getting that early commitment from your quarterback of the cycle, allows the Sooners to focus their efforts at adding talent to put around their highly coveted quarterback prospect.

And this week, Oklahoma could have its quarterback for the 2024 cycle, with [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag] expected to announce his commitment on Saturday, April 8. Everything points to the Sooners at this point, but TCU is very much a player for the Frisco Emerson quarterback prospect.

Committing the day before Hawkins is another Sooners’ target, safety [autotag]Aaron Flowers[/autotag]. Although, a recent crystal ball prediction from Brandon Drumm of OUInsider has Flowers heading west to join Alex Grinch and the USC Trojans.

Regardless of what happens this weekend, as we saw a year ago, as we inch closer to the Summer, look for Oklahoma to pick up some steam. By the end of July, we should have a great idea of what this recruiting class is going to look like for the [autotag]2024 recruiting cycle[/autotag].

Oklahoma Sooners pick up a pair of Rivals FutureCasts for 4-Star Safety Jaydan Hardy

Continuing the trend from the weekend, the Oklahoma Sooners picked up a pair of Rivals FutureCasts for 2024 four-star safety Jaydan Hardy.

The writing appears on the wall for 2024 four-star safety Jaydan Hardy. On Saturday a run of predictions came in from 247Sports on the four-star safety committing to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Sam Spiegelman of On3 issued a prediction for the Sooners and SoonerScoop.com’s Josh McCuistion provided the first Rivals FutureCast putting Hardy with Oklahoma.

Well, now a couple of analysts over at Rivals have joined the fray, issuing Rivals FutureCasts favoring Hardy to land with the Sooners.

Shayne Pickering of Tennessee Insider has issued a FutureCast in favor of the Sooners. Texas A&M recruiting insider Landyn Rosow flipped his initial prediction from the Aggies to Oklahoma.

Here’s what we had to say about Hardy just the other day.

Hardy is an athletic and rangy defensive back. He does a great job diagnosing the play and working through the muck to get to the ball carrier. His athleticism was on display in all three phases for the Farmers, who used Hardy as a wide receiver, wildcat quarterback, and as the holder on field goal attempts. As the holder, Lewisville would then stand him up to take the direct snap and run a play, often resulting in a first down conversion or a touchdown. – Williams, SoonersWire

This recruitment seems to be going similarly to the way the buzz around [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag] and [autotag]Jeremiah Newcombe[/autotag] went. A flurry of recruiting predictions from each of the major recruiting sites followed shortly by a commitment.

There’s no official timetable on a Hardy commitment, but with the way these predictions keep coming, it feels like a pledge to the Sooners could be imminent.

Recruits react on social media to time spent in Norman with the Sooners

How did recruits react on social media to their time spent with the Oklahoma Sooners?

The Oklahoma Sooners hosted a number of prospects across the next few recruiting cycles. This week’s recruiting events have already yielded a commitment with the pledge from Jeremiah Newcombe to the Sooners 2024 class.

These weekends are about furthering recruiting pitches for prospects the Sooners have been recruiting for some time. Additionally, the recruiting events help build relationships with prospects they’re just beginning to recruit as well.

While much of the focus was on the 2024 and 2025 classes, the Sooners looked deep into the future and welcomed 2026 and 2027 prospects as well.

As we do after each of these major recruiting weekends, here’s a look at what some of the prospects had to say after their time in Norman.

Oklahoma No. 3 in ESPN’s future quarterback power rankings

With Dillon Gabriel returning and the arrival of Jackson Arnold, the Oklahoma Sooners have one of the best quarterback situations in the country.

With a number of losses on the offensive side of the football to the NFL draft, there’s reason to wonder how good the Oklahoma Sooners offense will be in 2023.

The Sooners lost their leading rusher, top two receivers, and a pair of starting offensive tackles that are likely to be top 100 picks in the 2023 NFL draft. And still, they’re returning the player that matters most to offensive success; the quarterback.

[autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag] returns for his second season in Norman in what will be his last hurrah at the collegiate level. Gabriel brings back the most returning production at the position in the Big 12. That sets the Sooners up to be able to better mitigate the sting of the departures of [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag], [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag], [autotag]Anton Harrison[/autotag], [autotag]Wanya Morris[/autotag], and [autotag]Chris Murray[/autotag].

With Gabriel for 2023 and [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag] waiting in the wings, offensive coordinator [autotag]Jeff Lebby[/autotag] has the Sooners set up really well at the quarterback position for 2023 and beyond. ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg ranked the top 25 quarterback situations for 2023 and beyond (ESPN+), and the Oklahoma Sooners landed at No. 3.

The start of the Brent Venables era in Norman didn’t go well, but Gabriel wasn’t the problem. He passed for 3,168 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions, while adding 315 rushing yards and six scores. Despite missing a game and most of another, his numbers compared favorably to his first two seasons at UCF. He could play two more seasons at OU, which retained coordinator Jeff Lebby, and should continue to produce. Oklahoma seemingly is well-positioned for whenever Gabriel departs after signing Jackson Arnold, ESPN’s top dual-threat quarterback and No. 3 overall player in the 2023 class. Arnold earned Gatorade National Player of the Year honors after passing for 3,476 yards and 33 touchdowns as a high school senior, while adding 921 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns.

Arnold should help with depth, as Oklahoma struggled mightily without Gabriel in losses to TCU and Texas. OU lost a quarterback with Nick Evers transferring to Wisconsin, but returns veteran Davis Beville for another year. If Arnold delivers on the expectations around him, the Sooners should be in very good shape under center through 2025. – Rittenberg, ESPN

The Sooners landed one of the top quarterbacks in the 2023 recruiting class in Jackson Arnold. He’s an ascending player, growing into a five-star player during his senior year, which included Elite 11 MVP honors and the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award. Arnold got a jump start on his collegiate career as a mid-year enrollee but will serve as a backup quarterback for the Sooners in preparation for his turn at the helm, likely starting in 2024.

Though he hasn’t committed yet, the Oklahoma Sooners are heavily favored to land 2024 four-star quarterback [autotag]Michael Hawkins[/autotag]. Lebby and the Sooners will have to do battle with Sonny Dykes, Kendall Briles, and the TCU Horned Frogs, but are in a good spot to land the talented Hawkins when he commits on April 8.

The Sooners have already received their quarterback commitment of the 2025 recruiting class with the pledge of [autotag]Kevin Sperry[/autotag]. He’s a talented dual-threat quarterback that will be a fantastic fit in Jeff Lebby’s offense.

The Sooners came in behind USC at No. 1 and Ohio State at No. 2.

The Trojans are set up well with Heisman trophy winner [autotag]Caleb Williams[/autotag] and 2024 five-star signee [autotag]Malachi Nelson[/autotag]. They’ll be a force offensively for as long as Lincoln Riley is in Los Angeles. But will the defense make enough improvements to help the Trojans get into national title contention?
