All the latest updates and news on Penn State’s injury report ahead of a Week 10 game vs. Ohio State.

Penn State hosts Ohio State in one of the games of the year in the Big Ten. But the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes each are coming into the week with some notable injury concerns after last week. Penn State lost key players in the first half of last week’s win at Wisconsin when quarterback [autotag]Drew Allar[/autotag] and defensive end [autotag]Dani Dennis-Sutton[/autotag] each left in the second half of the game. Ohio State is battling some offensive line concerns after getting a little banged up last week in a win against Nebraska.

Drew Allar injury update

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar left last week’s game at Wisconsin at the end of the first half with an apparent knee injury. After warming up for the second half, Allar did not play after halftime, giving way to backup quarterback Beau Pribula. Allar was seen practicing with the team this week and is expected to play and start for the Nittany Lions on Saturday.

Dani Dennis-Sutton injury update

Penn State defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton left last week’s game early in the second half with a reported groin injury. Dennis-Sutotn was taken out of the game late in the first half and did try playing at the start of the second half, but he was removed quickly in the second half as a caution. Head coach James Franklin said this week he would be a game-time decision.

Penn State player availability report for Kent State updated

Penn State has posted its player availability report for today’s game against Kent State.

Penn State will be without one of its top defensive players on the roster this weekend when the Nittany Lions host Kent State for a mid-Saturday afternoon non-conference matchup. Head coach James Franklin announced this week that the team will be without safety, Kevin Winston Jr., for an extended period of time due to a long-term injury. This week’s player availability confirmed that for this week with Winston Jr. being among the players officially ruled out on the Penn State player availability report.

Big Ten teams are required to provide a player availability report prior to their respective games each week as part of a new conference policy put into place for the 2023 season.

Penn State player availability report for Week 1 at West Virginia

Penn State’s updated player availability reports confirms a couple of players expected to be out of action.

Penn State’s first road trip to open the season will see the roster without a number of players available. Penn State’s player availability report was released two hours before kicking off at West Virginia, and a total of 14 players have officially been ruled out of action.

Some of the names appearing on the list were not surprising to see. Linebacker Keon Wylie has previously been reported to be out of action for a significant period of time since the spring. Backup quarterback Jaxon Smolik was also banged up with an undisclosed injury during camp.

One of the notable players to miss the West Virginia game includes tight end Khalil Dinkins, who is expected to be a key alternative to star Tyler Warren at the position. James Franklin did note this week that Dinkins had been getting banged up leading up to the game, however.

Big Ten schools are required to provide a player availability report no later than two hours prior to a scheduled kickoff. The policy was put into effect in 2023 and has seen a few conferences follow that idea in 2024.

West Virginia has not had any reported injuries this week. The Big 12 does not have the same kind of rules requiring player availability reports for its members. The SEC and MAC each enacted a similar policy beginning this season following the Big Ten’s lead.

Injury sidelines key Penn State linebacker for ‘significant’ time

Reports have suggested Penn State could be without linebacker Keon Wylie for an extended period of time.

The top goal of the offseason for any football player is to stay healthy and ready to go for the fall. Unfortunately, one key rising linebacker for Penn State could be sidelined for an extended period of time.

According to multiple reports, Keon Wylie will be out of action for what is being described as a significant amount of time due to an unspecified injury. The exact nature of the injury has not been reported publicly. Penn State head coach James Franklin and Penn State do not disclose medical information unless it is extremely serious in nature, but Wylie’s absence from spring practice drills and the spring game was notable. With Wylie never entering the transfer portal, his health status was of concern.

How long Wylie will be unavailable remains to be seen, and his status for the 2024 season will have to be determined at a later time. But the reports surfacing now are a clear concern.

Wylie was set to enter the 2024 season as being a more active contributor on defense as one of the top backup options at linebacker. With Kobe King, Tony Rojas, and Dominic DeLuca believed to be the starters, Wylie would have been one of the next linebackers on the field, or perhaps used in certain packages or rotations.

Penn State’s linebacker position will be hoping to create sustainability at the position after losing Curtis Jacobs to the NFL and moving Abdul Carter to defensive end.

Going into the 2023 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster. Penn State spring football: Linebacker preview

Penn State’s linebacker depth in 2023 could be the best it’s been in years.

There is potential that this will be one of the most exciting linebacker groups that Penn State has had in a while.

The group is headlined by true sophomore [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag] who really opened eyes last season. Coming in wearing the coveted number 11 jersey as a true freshman meant the spotlight would be on him all year. He more than delivered and has a promising collegiate career in front of him.

Another interesting nugget is there are no seniors in the linebacking corps for 2023-24. The most experienced players are two redshirt juniors. This is a good sign for the future as this group will be able to continue playing with each other for multiple years going forward.

There will be depth chart battles this spring to keep an eye on. The main one to watch is between [autotag]Kobe King[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyler Elsdon[/autotag] for the starting middle linebacker position. Elsdon won the battle last spring and summer, but the snap counts last season were pretty similar.

There is a real buzz around Abdul Carter about what he can do this season. Coming into Penn State, Carter was a four-star recruit in the 2022 class. He was excellent in his freshman season recording 56 total tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. His PFF grade was 76.2 ranking him 122nd out of 789 linebackers last season.

With another offseason in the college weight room and more time to get familiar with the defensive scheme, the sky is the limit for Carter. He could be the highlight of what’s expected to be a very good defense.

Penn State commits help Pennsylvania dominate Maryland in Big 33 Football Classic

Penn State commit Keon Wylie was impressive in the Big 33 Football Classic

A handful of future Penn State Nittany Lions to part in one of the longest-running high school football traditions in the state this weekend. The Big 33 Football Classic, pitting top high school seniors from Pennsylvania against some of the top seniors from the state of Maryland, took place in Harrisburg on Monday. A total of six players heading to Penn State participated in the game.

[autotag]Mekhi Flowers[/autotag], [autotag]Anthony Ivey[/autotag], [autotag]Blaise Sokach-Minnick[/autotag], [autotag]Ken Talley[/autotag], and [autotag]Keon Wylie[/autotag] all played for the Pennsylavnia. [autotag]Jim Fitzgerald[/autotag] suited up for Maryland.

Pennsylvania won the game, 28-7, to earn a third straight victory over Maryland in the series. Pennsylvania has now won seven of the last nine Big 33 games. Wylie was one of the defensive stars of the game, earning game MVP honors for his effort resulting in two tackles, one pass breakup, and a sack.
