ESPN Bowl Projections: Texas to take on the ‘U’

After the win over Oklahoma State, where do the experts project the Texas Longhorns could be headed this bowl season?

Following the upset win over Oklahoma State, we checked in on the latest bowl game projections from ESPN. Despite the Texas Longhorns pulling off the win, their bowl outlook hasn’t seen them rise much in the hierarchy. Tom Herman and company are still looking at a lower tier bowl, but one matchup could pit two of the bigger names in college football against one another.

Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando, Florida

A matchup of the Miami Hurricanes and Texas Longhorns would put two storied college programs head-to-head. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach is projecting they would meet. Both teams at one point this year were top-10 teams but losses dropped them down the pecking order. The Hurricanes are within the top 15, but the Longhorns find themselves on the outside looking in.

The schools have met four times dating to 1972. Texas won the initial matchup 23-10 in Austin. They met the following year in Miami with the Hurricanes coming out on top. They didn’t play again until 1981 in Austin once again. The Longhorns defended their home turf. The last matchup came in the Cotton Bowl during the 1991 season. Miami blasted Texas 46-3 in that game.

With the series tied 2-2, this could break the tie in this matchup of historic programs.

AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee

Kyle Bonagura still has the Longhorns in the Liberty Bowl, but, unlike the previous projection of facing Tennessee, they would draw the Kentucky Wildcats. Their head coach Mark Stoops would probably sound familiar to many Longhorns fans. He is the brother of former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops.

These two schools have met one time in their history. That game happened in 1951 when the Longhorns won 7-6. Kentucky plays really good defense and it would definitely a challenge for the Longhorns offense.

Five-star power forward Daimion Collins announces top five

Daimion Collins has announced a top five of KU, UK, OU, UT, and Texas Tech. The five-star has been one of UT’s top targets in the 2021 class.

Daimion Collins, a 2021 power forward recruit, has announced a top five of Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas Tech. A five-star prospect, Collins has been one of the Longhorns’ top targets in the 2021 class.

Listed at 6-9 and 210 pounds, Collins is the No. 5 power forward in the country. Nationally, he ranks as the No. 19 player in the country and is the No. 2 prospect in the state of Texas, only behind Stanford commit Harrison Ingram.

Collins is seen as an elite player around the rim offensively and defensively. Not only can he block shots but good hands mixed with strength makes him an elite down low scorer.

According to the 247Sports crystal ball, the battle for Collins will be between Red River rivals in Texas and Oklahoma. The Sooners have three predictions with a confidence level of seven. A selection was made by Nick Harris, a Texas insider, as recently as Sept. 25.

Shaka Smart’s 2021 recruiting class if off to a hot start, already ranked No. 2 in the Big 12. Four-star combo guard Emarion Ellis leads the way as the top player from the state of Iowa.

Collins will be the big-time recruit Smart needs to land to complete the class. The sixth-year head coach has worked with big men in the past to send them directly into the NBA lottery.

Mychal Mulder is trying to matchup with Klay Thompson as much as he can at Warriors minicamp

During the Golden State Warriors offseason minicamp, Mychal Mulder is trying to take advantage of his opportunity to guard Klay Thompson.

Klay Thompson’s long-awaited return to the practice facility provides an opportunity for the young members of the Golden State Warriors core.

After he missed the entire 2019-20 season while recovering from the knee injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals, Golden State’s voluntary offseason minicamp is the first chance for the Warriors’ new arrivals to work with Thompson at practice.

Since the last time Thompson laced up for a Golden State practice, there’s been an influx of young players at the wing position. Since the start of 2019, Jordan Poole, Ky Bowman and Mychal Mulder have all landed in the Bay Area.

In a post-practice interview with members of the media, Mulder called it a “blessing” to work with Thompson at minicamp. During practice, the Kentucky product said he’s trying to match up with Thompson as much as he can.

Mulder via Warriors SoundCloud:

Anytime I get the opportunity, really. Because, as you know, Klay [Thompson] wasn’t playing when I first got here. Now that we got Klay back on the floor, I try to match up with him as much as I can. Obviously, it’s a great opportunity for me and everyone else — just to really sponge off his knowledge of the game and his leadership. So, obviously, anytime I get the chance to be on the floor with him and really get to guard him and he guards me, that’s obviously a blessing in itself — something that makes us all a lot better.

Although he only played seven games with the Warriors, Mulder impressed in his short stint in the Bay Area. The 26-year-old averaged 11.0 points on 38.8% shooting with 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 29.1 minutes per game. The G League veteran marked double-figures in scoring in four of his seven contests with the Warriors.

The voluntary minicamp will serve as an opportunity for Mulder to lay the foundation for his bid to make the Warriors set roster before the start of the 2020-21 season.

Kentucky vs. Auburn: A wild end to the half left both fanbases furious

There were two late disallowed touchdowns in the first half of Kentucky-Auburn.

The SEC returned to play on Saturday, and the game of the day between ranked opponents in Auburn delivered some wild, controversial action at the end of the first half.

Trailing No. 8 Auburn 8-7 in the final minute of the second quarter, No. 23 Kentucky was in a golden position to take the lead, with a first-and-goal opportunity from Auburn’s 2-yard line. Kentucky running back Christopher Rodriguez Jr. took a direct snap and appeared to force his way into the endzone for the touchdown – but officials somehow marked him short, and even after a review, officials inexplicably stuck with their initial ruling on the field.

Two plays later, disaster struck for the Wildcats. Quarterback Terry Wilson was picked off just inside the endzone, and Auburn’s Roger McCreary returned the ball 100 yards for a touchdown and a monumental points swing.

That play was reviewed, however, and the touchdown was wiped off the board due to a targeting call on Derick Hall. There was no flag on the return, but officials called targeting after the review. Instead of Kentucky (rightfully) leading 14-8, or Auburn leading 15-7, the game went to half 8-7. Even the ESPN graphics department was having trouble keeping up.

Auburn Wire Picks: Who wins Auburn vs. Kentucky?

The staff of Auburn Wire picks who will win the battle between the Tigers and Wildcats on Saturday.

College football season is finally here and Auburn will host Kentucky in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday as the Tigers look to start the 2020 season 1-0.

The Wildcats bring in a veteran offensive line and a talented team that will challenge Gus Malzahn’s side. So who wins? The staff at Auburn Wire have made their predictions.

Shea Brennaman

Auburn 27, Kentucky 17

I think Kentucky will be able to score against Auburn due to the protection they bring back with their offensive line, but Kentucky’s defense has absolutely no idea what to expect from Auburn’s offense (nobody does). Kentucky returns eight starters to a defense that finished second in the country last year in passing yards allowed, but 64th in rushing defense. I think Auburn’s secret to success here is speed. The Tigers will get their run game started early to wear out the Wildcats’ defense, this game will be close but I’m sticking to the 10 point spread here.
Breakout stars for Auburn: Anthony Schwartz, Shaun Shivers

JD McCarthy

Auburn 24, Kentucky 17

Auburn is replacing two generational talents on the defensive line in Derrick Brown and Marlon Davidson and the defense will immediately be put to the test by a Kentucky offense that boost one of the top offensive lines in the country and a trio of talented backs. While Kentucky will have some success on the ground, K.J. Britt and Co. will be able to hold it in check.

Auburn fans are eager to watch Auburn’s offense under now offensive coordinator Chad Morris and a revamped passing attack. Bo Nix, Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz will have a tough matchup with a secondary that allowed the second-fewest passing yards but will make enough to pull out the victory.

Brian Stultz

Auburn 28, Kentucky 20

All that has been talked about it seems this fall has been the explosiveness of Chad Morris’ offense and how it will transform the Tigers. Well, it is time to see if that is truly the case. Kentucky brings in a talented and veteran team that should be able to give Auburn some fits but, when it comes down to it, I believe Bo Nix and the running game for Auburn will be too much for the Wildcats.

Everything Gus Malzahn said ahead of the matchup with Kentucky

The SEC has made it to the first week of the season and at his first press conferecne of the season Gus Malzahn previewed Kentucky, talked about the depth chart and the strugglles from this offseason.

Auburn football has made it to the first week of the season and at his first press conferecne of the season Gus Malzahn previewed Kentucky, talked about the depth chart and the strugglles from this offseason.

Opening statement…

“First of all, we’re excited it’s game week. It’s been a long time coming to get to this point. We’re playing a really good Kentucky Wildcat team. When you look at them offensively, last year they were one of the best rushing teams in all of college football. To be able to do that in this league says a lot. They have four returning starters up front that I think are very talented. It’s really a strength of their team. Defensively, I’m very impressed. They’ve got most of their guys back on defense. They’re very well coached. They know their answers. They know their assignments. They’re impressive to watch on film. Overall, what Coach Stoops has done with that program and the consistency he’s had and the games he’s won says a lot.

“As far as us goes, the depth chart — you see we have a whole lot more numbers then we usually do. We have three deep at defensive positions; that was done by design because of COVID and having great quality depth. A position change you’ll see — Jeremiah Wright, offensive line to defensive line, just to give us more depth. He played that in high school, and we think he can help us there. We have two guys that are going to be out because of injuries, O.C. Brothers and Romello Height. They had shoulder procedures in the off-season, so they’re recovering. We’re hoping we can get both of those guys back before the end of the season.

“As far as a COVID update, we had one positive two weeks ago. I believe it’s six players that have been out for 14 days that we get back today because of close contact. Everybody should be back today. We do have two more tests before we play the game, so hopefully that will go well. With that being said, I really want to thank our medical team and administrative team for everything they’re done up to this point and throughout the summer — testing our players, the protocols and everything that goes with it. They’ve done an outstanding job to get us to this point that we can actually play a game.

“Overall, I’m really excited about this year’s team. We have all kinds of new faces out there. I believe we have 13 new starters, so I’m really excited to watch this team grow. I really feel that if we stay healthy, we’ll have a chance to improve each game, and of course with 10 SEC games, it’s important for teams to improve throughout the year. I’m really looking forward to watching our guys play. I’m excited. Our stadium, with our fans, will be a little bit new. If you look at it, the majority of our fans will be students. Our students are the best in the country, so I really expect those guys to bring their A-game, make it loud as possible and make it a good home field advantage.”

About Jaylin Simpson listed as a starter…

“Yeah he really came on. He’s got some natural football instincts and they put him at corner right off the bat. You could tell that each day that he improved, and he can flat-out run. He’s got really good ball skills and he’s a good tackler. He really stepped up and made an early impression and he kept that momentum going throughout fall camp.”

The importance of a home-field advantage…

“When the schedule first came out, the first thing that stood out to me is we actually were at home the very first game, which I think is important with all this new normal. We are really looking for that to be an advantage for us. When it’s a regular game day and we’ve got 90,000 fans, there’s no better place in all of college football as far as atmosphere than here. The fact that the majority of our fans are going to be students – our student section is always one of the best, if not the best in the country and I know they’re going to have their A-game and they’ll be loud as possible to help us win. That, along with getting crowd noise piped in, I think it’s going to be a pretty good atmosphere that’s pretty loud.”

About Colby Wooden…

“Well, he’s been consistent. He’s been impressive throughout fall camp; playing the run, rushing the passer, and just being consistent. When we recruited him, we had high expectations for him and we think he’s in a good spot right now.”

Anthony Schwartz and Eli Stove are listed at the same receiver spot…

“Yeah, I think you’ll see a little bit of both; sometimes one will be on the sideline and sometimes they’ll both be on the field. I think the big thing for Chad (Morris) is he’s going to find a way to put his best players on the field and move them around and (get) matchups. There will be a lot more moving around this year than in the past, but both of those guys are veterans that I know our offensive staff looks at as both of them being starters—not just as starters, but both of them having big play ability, and they’re both experienced.”

About Harold Joiner not being on the depth chart…

“Harold did some good things during fall camp and he’ll have a role, but it will be a little bit more specific role as we go. Here’s the deal, too; we feel like we have five guys at the running back position that can all help. He is one of those guys that does have experience and he’s made some big plays in games. You’ll still see Harold Joiner out there some, too.”

About the Kentucky offensive line…

“Well, they’re talented, they’re big, strong guys. Like I said earlier, the fact that they are one of the best rushing teams in all of college football in this league, you know that’s really what jumps out to you. If you look at both, both their offence and defensive lines, that’s where some of their strengths, they got most of their guys back as we lost most of our guys offensive front and defensive front so that’s going to be a challenge and our guys are aware of that. That’ll be a big factor but I’m real impressed with their offensive line.”

How do you feel about players transferring from one SEC school to another…

“I think it’s just a new day in college football with everything changing and people moving from team to team, so I just think it’s a new day. And I think there will be more and more of that in the future.”

On playing some guys at both end and tackle vs. Kentucky…

“There is some flexibility really on both the offensive and defensive lines. Our coaching staff have moved people around. Of course it was by design because of all the ‘what ifs’. What if this guy goes down? What if this guy is out because of COVID? So there’s been all kinds of mix and matching and I expect us to play quite a few players in the first game. As far as left tackle, we’ll just have to see how that goes. This is a big week for a lot of guys as far as even evaluation. Look at our two punters. They’re in a competition and we’ve not decided who the first one is going to be. So there’s a lot of positions I think like that that will give guys a chance to be on the first this first game.

On how the team has handled COVID-19 and the excitement leading up to Saturday…

“It’s been a very interesting journey. A long journey. There were a lot of weeks that you look back and say, ‘I don’t know how we’re going to play.’ And then the next week, they walk out and think we have a chance to play. Just the excitement has been completely different for our players. Even this Sunday’s practice was different because you could tell the urgency. I know for myself that it feels like game week and we finally got to that point. That kind of why I was thanking our medical staff and our administration for helping us get here. They did an outstanding job and they put our players first as far as health is concerned. We’ve worked ourselves through this. Our guys have been very responsible with COVID etiquette and the way they’ve handled themselves. That’s going to be a big key moving forward, too. We’re constantly talking to our guys about being responsible and what the new normal looks like and our guys really bought into that. I know that they’re just excited that we’re playing an opponent. We just happen to be playing one of the more veteran opponents in our league. And if you really look at it, without having spring to practice, I’ve always said that the veteran teams should have an advantage because they’ve got the experience. We’ll have to find a way to overcome that.

On Bo Nix’s confidence and how he’s improved…

“I don’t care whether it is Bo Nix being a true freshman or any quarterback that went through that schedule last year, that would have been tough on anybody. I was unbelievably impressed with how he handled everything between the pressures and all that. Then you get to the Iron Bowl and that’s the most pressure that probably a quarterback could be in with a rivalry game. The way that he played helped us win the game right there being a true freshman at home. He’s a different player right now and he should be. He’s got a year of experience. He’s one of our leaders. As you saw, he had four team leaders that our players voted on. He got the second most votes so that tells you he’s a team leader. He’s got a lot of confidence. I know him and Coach Morris work extremely hard together. He’s excited. Coach Morris is trying to build this thing around his strengths. I think he’s in a real good spot to lead us. I think you’ll see him definitely improve, but at the same time you will look at that schedule. I’d like to see a lot of these other teams play that schedule and see how their quarterback does. I like where he’s at.

Will the offensive line lean on Bo Nix to create a lot for the offense this first game…

“We are going to play to his strength. You look at last year and he created a lot on his own. He is a run threat. We are going to play to his strengths and rely on him a lot.”

Thoughts on the SEC’s new technology for contact tracing…

“It’s one thing the NFL has been doing and I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, so I think it’s a positive thing. The whole thing about this year is that it’s going to be a learning experience. The fact that the NFL has used it and used it successfully I think it’s a positive, but we will learn week to week.”

About Brodarious Hamm…

“Potential more than anything; he’s always been that number 6 or 7 guy in the last two years. I think he’s one of our leaders up front and he’s set for a big-time year. He’s very, very talented and probably as strong as any lineman that has come through here in a long time. I know we will be relying him on the field along with his leadership.”

About Colby Wooden’s growth at defensive tackle…

“He’s bigger than that. I don’t know exactly how much bigger but he weighs a little more than that. His quickness, he’s strong, he’s got instincts — when you move inside that’s a different world. I just know that he’s got really good instincts, and got a lot of reps this fall camp. I think he’ll have the ability to improve each game.”

What experience grad transfer Grant Loy brings to the program…

“I think it’s very important. He’s a guy that’s started at the college level. Chad (Morris) recruited him out of Arkansas; that was the relationship. He’s come here and he’s really done a good job with his teammates, a good job with the offense.”

Having a team voter registration day among real-life activities this off-season…

“That was really important. We had the education piece I’ve talked about all summer. We had speakers; it was really good. We had some team bonding situations and now it’s really our action items — of course the unity t-shirts, which our guys are really excited about. We’ve gotten great response; I believe that the students are going to have one in their chair for the game Saturday. I’m very excited about that. That’s one thing and then an action plan — register to vote — getting everyone registered to vote, to use their influence, I know our team is really excited about that. That was very important last week.”

About the Kentucky defense…

“They make you earn it — you look at the big plays last year. There’s not a lot of big explosive pass plays over top. They do a great job of keeping everything in front of them. They know their answers; when they get hurt on something, they’ll adjust really quick. You can tell they’ve been in this system a long time. The fact they’ve got most of their guys back — I think early on the teams that are coming back after not going through spring have an advantage. This is a very good Kentucky team that’s well-coached, has most of their guys back and has got their guys that call offense and defense especially in the back, so we’re going to have to earn it. We’re going to have to execute. This will be a game about execution, especially on offense, because they don’t make a lot of mistakes.”

About the number of true freshmen on the depth chart…

“I think I said a couple weeks ago this group of freshmen has a chance to be as good as we’ve had come through here, or at least since I have been here. I think that’s still an accurate statement. We’ll see once the games get going, but up to this point, it’s a very talented group that just needs game time experience. I expect that group to improve each game. There’s a lot of guys you’ll see on the field.”

About Caylin Newton…

“First off, you can tell he’s a veteran guy. You know he understand the game. He’s a tough guy too, not just receiver-wise. He’s done a good job and caught our attention special teams-wise. Like I said, you’ll see him on special teams and at receiver, too. We’re glad we have him; we think that he provides leadership and he’s a tough guy, too. I’m excited he’s here with us.”

Auburn football: Tigers have been ‘very fortunate’ regarding injuries

With just a week until Auburn welcomes Kentucky to Jordan-Hare Stadium to start the 2020 season Auburn is hoping to have the full team ready to go Saturday.

[jwplayer 1NmnJDjt]

With just a week until Auburn welcomes Kentucky to Jordan-Hare Stadium to start the 2020 season, Auburn is hoping to have the full team ready to go Saturday.

Auburn had zero positive COVID-19 tests last week, despite the SEC’s guidelines now requiring three tests per week.

Eight of Auburn’s players remined out of practice due to positive tests and contact tracing from a week ago. According to Gus Malzahn, all eight of those players should be able to return to practice Tuesday.

This is great news for Auburn as other teams have been forced to cancel or postpone games due to outbreaks. If Auburn can avoid any positives in the week, they will not only be able to start the season Saturday, they will get to do so with the whole team ready because the team has been “very fortunate” in regard to injuries.

“We’ve been very fortunate, I think, as far as any major injuries,” Malzahn said Friday. “We’ve put the ball down and we’ve played old-school football a whole lot, so we’ve been pretty fortunate as far as that goes. We are pretty banged up in a few areas, but our goal has been, by Tuesday of next week, hope everyone is healthy and ready to go. Hopefully that will happen.”

While minor injuries and COVID-19 have forced players to miss time during camp, avoiding any major injuries or outbreaks is undoubtably a positive and bodes well for the Tigers to play football Saturday.

Tyler Herro’s performance in the postseason matches Klay Thompson in one shooting category

After hitting a triple in the Eastern Conference Finals for the Heat, Tyler Herro matched Klay Thompson’s mark for made 3-pointers in his playoff debut.

The opening of the Orlando Bubble has produced the arrival of new breakout stars around the league.

Rookie Tyler Herro has served as a key piece off the bench in the Miami Heat’s 10-1 run through the NBA postseason. With a 3-pointer in the second quarter against the Boston Celtics, the Kentucky product matched a member of the Golden State Warriors in one postseason mark.

Herro’s triple against the Celtics was his 25th made 3-pointer in the 2020 postseason — equaling Klay Thompson’s clip from his first appearance in the playoffs in 2013.

Although Thompson had to wait till his sophomore season the NBA to make the playoffs, he shot 42.4% (25-of-59) from beyond the arc on 4.9 attempts in 12 games. Golden State advanced past the Denver Nuggets in six games during the opening round of the 2013 postseason before being eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs.

In his first taste of playoff basketball at 22-years-old, Thompson averaged 15.2 points on 43.7% shooting from the field with 4.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and one steal in 41.3 minutes per contest.

H/T via @IraHeatBeat on Twitter:

In comparison, the young Miami sharpshooter is averaging 14.1 points on 41.3% shooting from the field with 5.8 rebounds and four assists in 33.0 minutes per game. On 6.2 attempts per contest, Herro is shooting 36.8% (25-of-68) from long distance.

Prior to the beginning of the NBA’s restart in the Orlando Bubble, the 20-year-old shooter mentioned Thompson when talking about the game film he was studying while the season was on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Herro will have the chance to eclipse Thompson’s first postseason triple numbers in Miami’s Eastern Conference Finals game three tilt against the Boston Celtics. However, Herro will have some work to do before he catches the other Splash Brother.

In Steph Curry’s arrival to the postseason in 2013, the two-time Most Valuable Player splashed 42 3-pointers on 39.6% shooting from long range. The 24-year-old point guard tallied 23.4 points on 43.3% from the field with 8.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 12 games.

Patrick Williams, Precious Achiuwa and Tyrese Maxey most common picks for Pelicans in mock drafts

With the Pelicans likely targeting wings and outside shooters, names like Patrick Williams, Precious Achiuwa and Tyrese Maxey come up often.

[jwplayer LJTnI3Cp-z6KDnl0B]

While the general consensus for the New Orleans Pelicans is that they should target wing and outside shooting prospects in the 2020 NBA Draft. But as is often the case late in the lottery, the exact prospect they should target has varied widely.

HoopsHype’s Bryan Kalbrosky’s latest aggregate mock draft included the most common landing spots for prospects. For the Pelicans, the most common prospects to land at pick No. 13 were Precious Achiuwa of Memphis, Patrick Williams of Florida State and Tyrese Maxey of Kentucky.

Achiuwa and Williams are more natural 3&D players that have been slated to the Pelicans in previous mock drafts. Maxey, though, is less of a 3&D option and another potential guard the team could add to their young core.

Maxey was not a great shooter last season, shooting just 29.2% from range on 3.6 attempts per game. He was, however, strong in transition opportunities at 1.235 points per possession. Transition was the second-most common action for the Pelicans this season, per Synergy. Maxey also was an 86th percentile pick-and-roll player for Kentucky as well.

While those three were the most common, a host of other names were close behind. Aaron Nesmith of Vanderbilt, Saddiq Bey of Villanova and Devin Vassell of Florida State all were mocked to the Pelicans as well. Each would represent a more common 3&D option for New Orleans next season.

As the Pelicans narrow in on prospect targets, it appears likely that 3&D players will be the focus with a host of options available.
