Kentucky vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores aren’t playing that poorly.

They have yet to win an SEC game, and they’re on a five-game losing streak, but the offensive line has been okay, there aren’t a slew of big mistakes – four turnovers against South Carolina aside – and being able to control the clock and avoid screwing up might be enough to hang around with Kentucky.

The Wildcats can’t seem to get going. They’ve won two of their last three games, and they’re coming off a good road win over Missouri, but the running game has been hit-or-miss, a banged up Will Levis is fighting to get to 200 passing yards, and …

Bowl Bubble: Every Team’s Bowl Situation

Why Kentucky Will Win

If the running game was ever going to work, this would be the time.

Kentucky couldn’t get the ground attack in gear against Tennessee in a 44-6 loss with nothing working, but it hammered Mississippi State and will keep fighting the good fight to control the game – even if it doesn’t work.

No, UK doesn’t run well, but Vanderbilt should be the antidote for that. It’s allowing 4.6 yards per carry, is giving up 140 yards or more in every game but two, and it’s getting hit very, very hard against SEC teams.

Everyone but Missouri ran for over five yards per carry on the Commodores, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky will do everything possible to not turn the ball over.

It gives it up multiple times on a regular basis, but it didn’t do that against Missouri and everything worked out in a big fight.

Stay conservative, control the clock, and win on third downs. Vanderbilt can’t get its defense off the field and can’t keep the chains moving. That’s a killer against the Cats.

Kentucky vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

This isn’t a great three-point shooting team, but Vanderbilt was able to hit from the outside against Kentucky in the 78-66 loss back in mid-January.

For all of the amazing things Kentucky does, it doesn’t do a lot from three and it needs to keep moving and rely on second chances. Vanderbilt gets out on the outside and doesn’t get killed from three, and it could hang around if it can slow things down and force the Wildcats to start hacking.

The Commodores are great on the free throw line, Kentucky isn’t, and …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why Kentucky Will Win

Nah, Vanderbilt can’t hang on the boards. No one can.

Kentucky was able to roll through Kansas in a shocker by hitting everything on the inside and on the move, and it destroyed the normally great rebounding team and controlled things throughout.

As good as it was in Lawrence, it has to be able to hold up on Vanderbilt on the inside. The Commodore outside shooters aren’t great, but the team is 10-1 when it hits 44% of its shots or more and 1-8 when it doesn’t.

Only five teams have been able to make 44% or more of their shots on the Wildcats. They’re 15-1 against everyone else.

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky has found its stride.

Will it be on letdown alert after the Kansas game? Yeah, a little bit, but it’ll make up for it but getting on the move as the game goes on. Vanderbilt will hang around for a while on the line, but it won’t be able to keep up.

Kentucky vs Vanderbilt Game Preview

Why Kentucky Will Win

Vanderbilt scored last week and it still wasn’t enough.

This has been an offensively challenged team all year – it’s 128th out of 130 teams averaging just under 15 points per game – with no downfield passing game and not enough positive plays on third downs.

Kentucky is great at keeping things going – it’s strong on third downs – it usually makes teams play its style, and it has the ability to dominate the time of possession battle.

Vanderbilt won’t have the ball all that often, and it’s going to be pressed to take advantage of the opportunities when it does. That’s when the turnovers will come. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Kentucky has the right style to match up with Vanderbilt does.

The Wildcats tried to keep up in the firefight with Tennessee last week in the 45-42 loss, and they showed they had the offensive pop to do it. That’s not its style, though.

The goal is to keep this slow, slug it out in a controlled game without a ton of mistakes and with a big day on the ground, but UK doesn’t take the ball away and it’s a tad hit-or-miss with the rushing attack.

Vanderbilt will want and need to keep this in the 20s, and Kentucky will oblige.

What’s Going To Happen

The Commodores have had two weeks off to rest up, and they needed it after giving up well over 1,000 yards of total offense to Mississippi State and Missouri.

They’re not going to give up 500 yards to the Wildcats, but they’ll be run over for close to 200 yards as they have problems on too many third downs.

Kentucky has a whole slew of flaws, and it can be pushed by a good passing team. That’s not Vanderbilt.

This won’t get ugly, but every time it seems like the Commodores have a shot to get in the game, they won’t.

Why Kentucky Will Win

Just when it seems like the season is completely and totally lost – and it is – Kentucky rises up and gets the offense going in a shocking win over Auburn. The team was hitting from three – not a given with the Wildcats – and the D held the Tigers down from the outside just enough to pull off the victory.

Can UK turn this into a big late run?

The blocked shots are always there, but if the outside shots are falling – UK hit 42% or more in four of the last five games – all of a sudden this is a dangerous team. Since Vanderbilt isn’t good at the whole defense thing, the Wildcats have to keep pushing, but …

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores have been able to overcome its spotty defense with a decent shooting run.

They’re dead last in the SEC field goal D and they’re awful at defending the three, but they can hit from the outside and can do just enough on the defensive glass to prevent a ton of second chance points.

They lost the first game against UK back in early January because they weren’t sharp enough from three. Just a few extra threes and they win.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Kentucky win on the road? It has lost its last four away from Rupp, but Vanderbilt isn’t anything special at home.

It’s all about who has a decent shooting night. Neither team can get away with struggling from the outside, and neither one can give up second chance points.

Vanderbilt got the offensive rebounds in the first game and lost, but that was an aberration. UK will stay just hot enough from the outside to pull this off.

Kentucky (2-4) vs Vanderbilt (0-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

The Vanderbilt offense just isn’t working well enough.

The defense really is better than the overall numbers might make it appear, but it’s not getting any help from an O that only scored more than 17 points once, and even then that was in a 54-21 loss to an Ole Miss that gives out big yards and points like candy.

Kentucky isn’t exactly a high-octane thrill ride on offense, but it’s great at controlling games coming up with the big plays in key moments, and it lives off of takeaways with 12 on the year. The Cats are +8 in turnover margin in the two wins, and -4 in the four losses.

Vanderbilt is an SEC-worst -8 on the season, it turned it over two times or more in every games and it has given it away eight times in the last two outings. Give UK a few takeaways, and it’s over. But …

CFN College Football Experts Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Kentucky offense is right in the Vandy wheelhouse.

The Wildcats don’t crank up big offensive production sort of by design – it’s a controlled team that focuses more on tempo than putting up big, splashy plays – but they’re dead last in the SEC in total offense, passing offense, and first downs.

What’s going right? The Commodores might not be scoring, but the passing game has started to kick in, with Ken Seals hitting Ole Miss for 319 yards and Mississippi State for 336 yards. There have been too many picks, but he’s generally been accurate.

Vandy doesn’t have a problem with penalties, the offensive line hasn’t been bad, and the team is able to pull a Kentucky and control the clock a bit.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is the one team that works with what Vanderbilt does and has the capability of doing … and vice versa.

UK will do just enough offensively to go along with a defense that will take the ball away twice, keep Vandy pinned deep with a great day from the punting game, and will use the SEC’s best scoring defense to get through with a desperately needed win.

Kentucky (18-5) vs. Vanderbilt (9-14) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

We did this a few weeks ago, and UK didn’t have much of a problem after getting beaten up in the first half.

Down early, the Wildcats roared back in the second half to win 71-62 as part of a run of ten Vandy losses in the last 11 games.

The Commodores don’t play any defense, they can’t stop anyone on the perimeter – they’re getting roasted from three – and worst of all for this game, they can’t rebound. They were a -8 on the boards the first time around, and it’s not going to be a whole lot better.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

The Commodores might not be great from three, but they’ll keep on bombing away.

Part of the reason is because they have to do something to get back into games – going 0-for-25 against Tennessee wasn’t pretty – but they’ll get hot once in a while. They hit from the outside against LSU, and they won. They have to hope for a slightly disinterested effort from UK’s D for a full 40 minutes.

Kentucky doesn’t do much to take the ball away, and it doesn’t take a whole lot of threes. Vandy has to hold its own on the defensive boards, and it has to get hot early and hope the energy of the crowd helps. But …

What’s Going To Happen

Kentucky is great at defending the three.

Vandy actually hit from the outside in the first meeting, but it wasn’t consistent enough and the defense couldn’t handle the second half run.

Expect more of the same as the Wildcats get up fast and doesn’t allow many – if any – second chance points.

Kentucky (4-5) vs. Vanderbilt (2-7) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Kentucky Will Win

Does Vanderbilt have any hope to complete a downfield pass?

Commodore QB Riley Neal hasn’t been right for a few weeks and missed the Florida game. Even when he’s been healthy, the offense has struggled to move, scoring more than ten points just once in the last five games.

Overall, the passing game is averaging just over five yards per throw with the combination of quarterbacks failing to complete more than 55% of their passes over the last five games.

This isn’t an Vandy offense that can come out and start scoring in bunches. Kentucky needs to start running, keep control of the clock, and take advantage of its opportunities.

UK should be able to run for 200 yards and hold the ball for at least 35 minutes. It’ll have to, because …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

There’s really no Wildcat passing game.

The offense is all about WR Lynn Bowden keeping things going from under center, running just effectively enough to not screw up, milking the clock, and then hoping the defense can take care of the rest.

It’s easier said than done to stop what the Wildcats are doing – slow and steady wins the race – but the O has failed to hit 100 yards passing over the last five games with just one touchdown pass in the last six outings.

It’s not just that Kentucky doesn’t do much offensively, it’s that there’s no downfield passing game to worry about, and the O doesn’t do enough when it gets its chances.

The Wildcat placekicking isn’t anything great, and the offense sputtered and struggles too much in the red zone.

Getting a point in this thing will be like pulling teeth.

[lawrence-related id=499899]

What’s Going To Happen

On the plus side for Kentucky, losing to Vanderbilt would be only the second-worst/weirdest defeat by the school this week.

The Wildcat defense will come up with stop after stop, the game will grind down to a dead stop at times, and it’ll be at the exact pace both teams need it to be.

Kentucky does this better.
