SEC Superlatives: Predicting the best of the best for 2022 CFB season

Do you agree with these projected SEC superlatives for the upcoming 2022 college football season?

The 2022 college football season is still a few months away, but it’s never too early to try and predict which players will rise above the rest.

Superlatives are great for recognizing individuals who have special abilities that deserve to be appreciated. In this article, we are straying from the typical superlative you’d find in your high school yearbooks.

Whether it be the reigning Heisman-winner rising to the occasion, or a first-year player that could cause a stir as a true freshman, the SEC is loaded with talent that will be seen by fans, players and analysts from all across the nation.

Here are a few predictions for the upcoming 2022 season.

CFB Re-Rank: Where every SEC team ranks among all FBS programs in the nation

Where all 14 SEC teams rank compared to every FBS program in the nation.

The 2022 college football season will soon be right around the corner and the SEC is expected to be loaded, once again. Last year, the conference made up half of the College Football Playoff’s final four teams and ultimately having a rematch of the SEC championship in the national title game.

Alabama returns plenty of key talent on both sides of the ball and Georgia is projected to win the East, to no one’s surprise. The rest of the conference might be a toss-up; and with plenty of surprises that come with college football, who knows what 2022 has stored.

Though fans may have to wait a few more months before their favorite teams kick off, USA TODAY Sports did a re-rank of teams heading into the 2022 season.

As expected, SEC teams make appearances at, and near, the top.

Kentucky Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Wildcats miss from the SEC West slate?

The Wildcats can’t complain. They have to go to Ole Miss and host Mississippi State from the West. That means they miss Alabama, Texas, A&M, Auburn, LSU, and Arkansas. That’s not too bad.

The games against the East aren’t all that bad, either. They have to start out the SEC season at Florida, but the road date at Tennessee comes after a week off, and the Georgia game is at home.

Kentucky Football Schedule What To Know: November might not be all that bad

Playing Georgia is bad no matter when it happens, but again, at least that’s at home.

At Missouri, Vanderbilt, and Louisville are wrapped around the date with the Dawgs. Throw in the October home games against South Carolina and Mississippi State, and five of the last seven games and eight of the last ten, and there isn’t a whole lot to complain about.

That means …

Kentucky Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Really? There are only four road games?

Yup, and if Florida hasn’t built back better under Billy Napier two weeks in, there’s a shot at a massive record to kick off the season before going to Ole Miss.

There isn’t a non-conference game to worry about – all of them are at home – and there aren’t going to be too many times Kentucky will be the underdog. So go ahead and put it out there …

If Kentucky is ever going to get over the hump in the SEC East, this is the schedule to make it happen.

Kentucky OC Liam Coen was ‘in the mix’ for Saints job, may join Rams instead

Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen was ‘in the mix’ for Saints job, may join Rams instead:

[mm-video type=video id=01fvdabw9h5033rw8dnd playlist_id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fvdabw9h5033rw8dnd/01fvdabw9h5033rw8dnd-7d44df81ec092dda8eaab4ece5e021cd.jpg]

Well, that’s something. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that the Saints had Kentucky Wildcats offensive coordinator Liam Coen “in the mix” for the same job on their staff, though they did not ultimately offer him a contract. Instead, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports, Coen has an opportunity for a return to the Los Angeles Rams as their new offensive coordinator. He’s worked with Sean McVay before as quarterbacks coach.

Coen put himself on the college football map last season by spearheading Kentucky’s 10-3 run, designing an offense with wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and running back Christopher Rodriguez Jr. leading the way — they each racked up more than 1,400 yards from scrimmage and scored a combined 20 touchdowns. That’s exactly the sort of tandem production you’d hope he could implement with Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara, which helps explain the Saints’ interest in him.

But that’s not going to happen now that the team has decided to settle with Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator. Carmichael has split time calling plays with Sean Payton throughout his 12-year tenure as offensive coordinator, and now he’s got a shot to do it all himself. And that raises its own questions. We know he can call an effective game plan, but how much responsibility has he had in designing plays and marshalling position coaches?

Those are all concerns the Saints had to have been asking during interviews, but they won’t get real answers for until the season starts. Even if he’s only done it at the college level, at least Coen could say that he did have that proven experience. Unfortunately, he’s not in New Orleans’ plans now. And there’s a real possibility he ends up joining an NFC rival who just won the Super Bowl.

Final SEC QB stat rankings from 2021 season

Stats from all 14 SEC teams’ QBs in the 2021 season

In 2021, the SEC had an interesting batch of quarterbacks.

Heisman-winner Bryce Young at Alabama was a young star and will certainly be expected to return just as dominant in 2022. Matt Corral from Ole Miss certainly made sure NFL front offices knew what he was capable of this past season.

Others across the conference either saw their career blossom or tank, some even decided to leave their respective programs all together via the NCAA transfer portal.

A lot of fans, media members and analysts talk about the ‘eye test,’ and how stats don’t tell the full story.

Well, in some cases, stats are exactly what they need.

The full quarterback stat rankings from the 2021 college football season may make you think twice about who the top-tier passers in the conference are.

What defensive coordinator Matt House Brings to LSU

What does Matt House bring to the table?

The LSU Tigers hired Matt House as their defensive coordinator recently; he is currently coaching linebackers with the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Matt House history

House started as a graduate assistant at Michigan State in 2001-2002. In 2003 he was a defensive assistant at North Carolina. After his time at North Carolina, House coached defensive linemen at Gardner-Webb. House spent the next few years coaching in the NFL and college before joining Kentucky in 2016 as inside linebacker coach and special teams coordinator.

In 2017 House became defensive coordinator at Kentucky under head coach Mark Stoops. In House’s first year, the Wildcats gave up 28.2 points per game and 426.9 total yards per game. But in 2018, the defense vastly improved. That year, Kentucky went 10-3 and ranked 12th in the final AP poll.

The defense was one of the best in the country; they only gave up 16.8 points per game and only allowed 186.3 passing yards per game in touch SEC conference. In addition, Kentucky forced 1.5 turnovers per game.

Before being the defensive coordinator at Kentucky House, was DC at Pittsburgh for three years and FIU for one year. In his last year with the Panthers, the defense ranked No.34 in the country. At FIU, House coached a solid red-zone defense and held opponents to less than 14 points four times.

[lawrence-related id=35051]

What he brings to the table

House uses multiple defensive fronts between the 4-3 and 3-4 scheme. He likes his defensive line to get in the backfield and create negative plays. Having coached linebackers, House believes in strong linebacker play. He wants to mix things up between zone and man in the secondary.

One of House’s strong points is player development; as the years go by, his defense gets better along with player development. For example, at Kentucky, he helped linebackers Courtney Love and Jordan Jones make the All-SEC second team in their first years as starters. While at Pittsburgh, House coached Aaron Donald and had a hand in his development.

Iowa vs Kentucky Vrbo Citrus Bowl Preview

Both teams manage to defy logic and reason to win a whole lot of games. They’re a perfect fit for each other.

Iowa doesn’t do anything on offense. It averaged fewer than 300 yards per game, the normally great O line – that has a few NFL talents – couldn’t keep anyone out of the backfield, and the downfield passing attack was too often nothing more than a polite rumor. Now it has to find things that move without RB Tyler Goodson – he opted out.

However, few teams were better at avoiding penalties, and only Middle Tennessee was better when it came to turnover margin. When the defense forced a ton of takeaways, good things happened.

And then there’s Kentucky. It was the third-worst team in college football in turnover margin, which would normally equal death for a team without a high-powered offense, but it all somehow worked well enough to get here.

The Wildcat offensive line was outstanding at preventing defenses from generate consistent pressure. Because of that, the offense was among the best in the nation at converting on third downs, and like Iowa, there weren’t a whole lot of penalties.
