Biggest theme of Penn State’s 2024 class: balance

Penn State’s 2024 class offers one of the more balanced recruiting hauls in the country.

With the first and busiest day of the college football early signing period behind us, we can confirm that Penn State signed all 25 of its Class of 2024 commits earlier today. It was a “drama-free” signing day according to [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] who spoke after all the commits had signed. The class is now locked in for next year so let’s break it down.

Penn State returns a boatload of starting-caliber players from last season but will lose several starters to the NFL with more expected to announce in the coming month. Penn State has never been a heavy transfer portal school and relies mainly on keeping its returning players intact while reloading with a strong freshman class.

This years’ class is ranked 14th in the country by 247Sports Composite and 16th by On3. With 12 offensive commits and 13 defensive commits this year’s group is evenly balanced eluding to the fact that Franklin and his staff want to add quality depth around the board and fill in any neccessary holes from departing players.

From a positon standpoint is was more of the same type of balance across the board:

  • 7 skill players: QB [autotag]Ethan Grunkemeyer[/autotag], running backs [autotag]Quintin Martin[/autotag] and [autotag]Corey Smith[/autotag], wide recievers [autotag]Josiah Brown[/autotag], [autotag]Tyseer Denmark[/autotag], and [autotag]Peter Gonzalez[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Luke Reynolds[/autotag]
  • 5 offensive lineman: [autotag]Eagan Boyer[/autotag], [autotag]Caleb Brewer[/autotag], [autotag]Cooper Cousins[/autotag], [autotag]Donovan Harbour[/autotag], [autotag]Garrett Sexton[/autotag]
  • 6 defensive lineman: [autotag]Liam Andrews[/autotag], [autotag]DeAndre Cook[/autotag], [autotag]T.A. Cunningham[/autotag], [autotag]Xavier Gilliam[/autotag], [autotag]Jaylen Harvey[/autotag], and [autotag]Mylachi Williams[/autotag]
  • 5 secondary players: cornerbacks Antoine Belgrave-Shorter, Kenneth Woseley, Jon Mitchell, and safties Dejuan Lane, and Vaboue Toure
  • 2 linebackers: Kari Jackson and Anthony Specca

No one position or side of the ball dominated the 2024 recruiting cycle for Penn State, but thats a good thing because it shows that Penn State has talent everywhere. Three wide recievers were added to arguably the worst room in 2023 and a playmaking running back was added to a room featuring two former 5-star recruits. The trenches were reloaded with talent and many of the offensive line commits should challenge for starting spots in their first year.

In the time of the transfer portal and NIL perhaps a early signing day like the one Penn State had today is not exciting, but it does not matter Franklin’s method of “underpromise, overdeliver” method still produces wins. It has in the past. Penn State’s 2024 class is balanced, solid, and most importantly adds talent across the board which is key for sustained success.

Early Signing Day Tracker: Say hello to Penn State’s Class of 2024

The early signing period for college football is officially open as schools around the country are locking in their entire, if not the vast majority, of their recruiting classes for the Class of 2024. Penn State will be among the schools expecting to receive signed National Letters of Intent from their verbal commitments to make things official. There could always be a player or two who hold off until the traditional signing period in February for one reason or another, but Penn State is hoping for a pretty simple and straightforward opening to the early signing period.

Here is a look at each player who committed to Penn State in the Class of 2024 recruiting calendar and an update on which players have signed in the early signing period.

Penn State’s 2024 football commitment tracker

An updated look at Penn State’s Class of 2024 following its most recent commitment.

Penn State pulled in a terrific Class of 2022 and got started with its Class of 2023 with some nice additions. But the work is already underway for the Class of 2024. Penn State received its first commitment to the Class of 2024 in January 2022 with some help on the offensive line in the commitment of in-state offensive tackle Cooper Cousins.

We’ll keep track of every commitment to Penn State’s Class of 2024 with this updated commitment tracker. Of course, this being the world of college football recruiting, there are bound to be some decommitments and twists and turns along the way, but we’ll keep track of those as well should they arise.

This tracker will be updated as necessary, with the most recent update being made on April 29, 2023.

Penn State’s Class of 2024 ranking boosted with latest four-star commitment

Penn State trending upward in updated Class of 2024 recruiting rankings after the latest major commitment.

Penn State may have gotten off to a relatively slower start in putting together its Class of 2024 foundation, but the Nittany Lions are rocking and rolling in mid-April. With its most recent commitment of the top player in Pennsylvania, running back Quinton Martin, Penn State’s national recruiting ranking continues to be trending upward.

Penn State’s current Class of 2024 team ranking falls in the top 10 in the nation according to 247Sports and Rivals. The updated class rankings using 247Sports’ composite rankings have Penn State at ninth overall. Rivals ranks Penn State a couple of spots higher at seventh overall.

On3 ranks Penn State slightly outside its top 10. According to the updated On3 team rankings, Penn State is ranked 12th in the nation.

No matter which recruiting outlet’s rankings you want to go by, Penn State is still putting together another high-quality recruiting class in 2024 the way things are going. But it is also worth noting Penn State still has the third-best recruiting class among Big Ten teams on each class ranking.

Michigan and Ohio State are each ranked ahead of Penn State in the various Class of 2024 rankings. The Wolverines have the highest-ranked class in the Big Ten according to 247Sports and Rivals, but Ohio State comes out ahead of the Big Ten schools with On3’s rankings.

Penn State’s addition of a commitment from Martin on Friday evening gives Penn State its top recruiting target in the Class of 2024, at least within the state of Pennsylvania. Martin is the top-rated recruit in Pennsylvania across all recruiting outlets, and he is considered a top 100 player by most of those outlets as well. Martin is the sixth four-star player in the current recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Martin is also the fourth player ranked in the top 10 in Pennsylvania to commit to Penn State. He joins offensive lineman [autotag]Cooper Cousins[/autotag], linebacker [autotag]Anthony Specca[/autotag], and cornerback [autotag]Kenneth Woseley[/autotag]. Offensive tackle Kevin Haywood, of Royersford, is a possible future commit for Penn State as well, which would be another top 10 player in the state to join the Nittany Lions. Only two players in the top 10 of Pennsylvania have committed elsewhere with wide receiver Tyseer Denmark (Oregon) and offensive lineman Peter Jones (Notre Dame) opting to go elsewhere.

Penn State starts April with recruiting commitment from four-star CB

Penn State started off April with a nice recruiting victory as a four-star CB committed to PSU.

Penn State is starting the new month on the right foot on the recruiting trail. On Saturday morning, four-star cornerback [autotag]Jon Mitchell[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions, giving Penn State another new addition to its Class of 2024 recruiting efforts.

Mitchell announced his commitment to Penn State on his Twitter account. The Jacksonville recruit is a major recruiting victory for the Nittany Lions as Mitchell committed to Penn State over offers from Florida State and Miami, both in-state programs on the rise. Mitchell made the announcement while in State College for a weekend visit with the program.

Mitchell is a 6-0, 177-pound cornerback who will be a nice addition to the defensive backfield that has become a steady unit for Penn State defenses in recent years. The secondary has seen some key players go on to be drafted in the NFL with players like Tariq Castro-Fields and Jaquan Brisker last season and Joey Porter Jr. expected to be a first-round selection in the 2023 NFL draft. Penn State’s Kalen King is a returning star at cornerback and a Walter Camp preseason first-team All-American.

Mitchell is rated as a four-star recruit by both On3 and 247Sports, and Rivals rates him as a three-star recruit. On3 ranks Mitchell as one of the top 100 players in the country and 247Sports includes him in their Top247 rankings. Clearly, Penn State is scoring a nice commitment out of the football-rich state of Florida.

Mitchell is the sixth player in Penn State’s current Class of 2024 lineup, and the second cornerback in the recruiting class along with [autotag]Kenneth Woseley[/autotag] from Philadelphia.

Michigan football makes top four for 2024 four-star cornerback

Hopefully #Michigan can reel him in! #GoBlue

Michigan football is working to add to what’s an increasingly good 2024 class after 2023 somewhat underwhelmed. If it’s to do that, it will need to continue to allure top-flight talent.

One such talent that’s apparently is high on the maize and blue is 2024 Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep Institute four-star cornerback Kenneth Woseley.

If that high school sounds familiar, that’s because it’s where current Michigan football signee, linebacker Semaj Bridgeman, hails from. But pulling Woseley out of Pennsylvania will likely be a tall task given how hard Penn State is pushing.

Nonetheless, Woselely released his top four schools on Friday, and Michigan football makes the cut, along with Penn State, Nebraska and Rutgers.

According to 247Sports’ proprietary rankings, Woseley is listed as the No. 343 player in the country, and ranked a four-star prospect, the No. 31 cornerback, and the eighth-best player in the state of Pennsylvania. He currently has two 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions, both indicating he will stay in-state and choose PSU.

Woseley is making his announcement of the school of his choice on March 3.

Penn State makes top four for 2024 CB target

Penn State and three other Big Ten teams makes top four cut for 2024 recruiting target

Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] aims to keep the top Pennsylvania talent in the state on the recruiting trail, and one target out of Philadelphia in the Class of 2024 has the Nittany Lions in his top four. [autotag]Kenneth Woseley[/autotag], from Philadelphia, announced his top four schools on Friday, with Penn State continuing to hold a favorable spot in the recruiting hunt.

Woseley shared his top four schools on his Twitter account on Monday evening. In addition to Penn State, three other Big Ten schools have made the top four cut; Nebraska, Michigan, and Rutgers.

Woseley is a four-star cornerback in the Class of 2024 according to his 247Sports composite recruiting ranking. The Imhotep Institute defensive back recently made an unofficial visit to Penn State’s campus and has made a couple of visits to the campus previously by attending a football camp and making an unofficial visit in 2021. With no shortage of high-quality options to consider, the first crystal ball predictions have been cast on his recruiting profile on 247Sports, and they are each in Penn State’s favor.

Though not an exact science, the On3 recruiting prediction machine also has Penn State as a big favorite in the recruiting process. On3’s recruiting metric calculates Penn State with a 93.8% chance of securing Woseley’s commitment at this early stage in the recruiting process (this is up from 89.8% from two weeks ago).

Early crystal ball prediction favors Penn State for Philadelphia CB target

Crystal ball projection favors Penn State for this four-star CB from Philadelphia in Class of 2024.

Penn State has taken some strides in recruiting the Philadelphia area a bit more seriously in recent years, and the Nittany Lions are quickly becoming an early favorite in the recruiting process for a four-star cornerback from the City of Brotherly Love.

[autotag]Kenneth Woseley[/autotag] is a four-star cornerback in the Class of 2024 according to his 247Sports composite recruiting ranking. The Imhotep Institute defensive back recently made an unofficial visit to Penn State’s campus and has made a couple of visits to the campus previously by attending a football camp and making an unofficial visit in 2021. With no shortage of high-quality options to consider, the first crystal ball prediction has been cast on his recruiting profile on 247Sports, and it is in Penn State’s favor.

The first official prediction on the board comes from Tyler Calvaruso, a staff writer for Lions247. Calvaruso cast his crystal ball prediction of Penn State for Woseley last week with a medium confidence. Time will tell if others feel the same way, but it’s enough to now label Penn State as the leader in the clubhouse.

Though not an exact science, the On3 recruiting prediction machine also has Penn State as a big favorite in the recruiting process. On3’s recruiting metric calculates Penn State with an 89.9% chance of securing Woseley’s commitment at this early stage in the recruiting process.

Penn State has plenty of stiff competition. Other teams in Woseley’s top 12, which was updated last summer, include Georgia, Oregon, Michigan, Rutgers, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Texas A&M, and more.
