Crimson Tide add former Nicholls State head coach Austin Claunch to the MBB staff

Nate Oats and Alabama MBB land a massive hire to join MBB staff

After maybe the best season in the history of the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program, Nate Oats is back on the recruiting trail, but this time it’s for assistant coaches.

Oats and the Crimson Tide are in unprecedented waters after losing all three assistants from the 2022-2023 team to head coaching positions elsewhere. Charlie Henry departed for Georgia Southern, Bryan Hodgson to Arkansas State and Antoine Pettway to Kennesaw State. Oats’ staff was a key part of the Tide’s success this year, especially recruiting, and they will be greatly missed.

Fortunately, Oats is already on the move and making new hires to fill the three positions. Alabama is expected to add Nicholls State head coach, Austin Claunch, to the staff as an assistant. Claunch has been incredibly successful at only 33 years old, going 51-17 in conference play over the past four years with two league titles.

Joining the Tide is a very attractive position for all coaches after seeing them churn out three head coaches in one offseason. Oats will have some major changes to make to the roster, but he needs to get some help with the coaching staff first.

Alabama MBB assistant coach Antoine Pettway hired as HC of Kennesaw State

Alabama MBB loses key assistant coach Antoine Pettway as he departs for HC position at Kennesaw State

Now more than ever it is time to see what Alabama Crimson Tide head basketball coach [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] is made of. Oats has won the SEC regular season and tournament and made multiple sweet sixteen’s, but getting the Tide ready for 2023-2024 will be his toughest task yet. Now, he will have to do it without three assistant coaches. Kennesaw State announced the hiring of Antoine Pettway.

Not only have the Tide lost arguably the best player in program history, Brandon Miller, to the NBA draft, but guys like Jaden Bradley and Nimari Burnett have departed via the transfer portal. The roster will look completely different next year, but that might not even be the hardest part of the offseason for Oats.

Oats will now be losing his third assistant this offseason as Pettway will take over as head coach at Kennesaw State. Pettway was a massive recruiter for the Tide, so this loss is a painful one. This speaks to Alabama’s growth as a program, considering all three of Oats’ assistants left the program this Spring to take on their own head coaching roles.

Former Georgia basketball assistant takes head coach job with USF

Former UGA basketball assistant coach Amir Abdur-Rahim is now the head coach at South Florida

Former Georgia basketball assistant coach Amir Abdur-Rahim is now the head coach at South Florida. Amir Abdur-Rahim took the head coaching job at Kennesaw State back in 2019.

Abdur-Rahim helped Kennesaw State make the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Kennesaw State was a No. 14 seed in March Madness and lost its opening game to Xavier. Kennesaw State finished the 2022-2023 basketball season with a 26-9 record.

Amir Abdur-Rahim replaces former South Florida coach Brian Gregory in Tampa, Florida. USF last made the NCAA Tournament in 2012. The Bulls have had one winning season since 2012, which was during the 2018-2019 season under Brian Gregory.

Amir Abdur-Rahim was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and played high school basketball in Georgia. He coached at Georgia from 2018-2019 under head coach Tom Crean.

Kennesaw State went just 1-28 in Abdur-Rahim’s first season at the helm, but he helped turn the program around. USF is coming off a 14-18 season.

This crooked rim created chaos for NCAA tournament games and may explain Iowa State’s rough start

This doesn’t seem fair.

No. 6 Iowa State and No. 11 Pittsburgh had a delayed start to their first-round game in the NCAA tournament caused by a crooked rim at Greensboro Coliseum.

The Midwest Region game followed a wild comeback from No. 4 Xavier to survive an upset bid by No. 14 Kennesaw State. During the victory, with less than a minute left on the clock, Xavier’s Souley Boum missed a wide-open layup following a pass from teammate Colby Jones.

It was one of several crucial shots that didn’t fall for Xavier, who won the game despite the missed field goals. But the troubles may have continued into the following game considering Iowa State was not able to warm up as expected.

UPDATE: The NCAA issued a statement noting that Iowa State was offered additional warmup time but declined.

Although NCAA tournament officials made sure that the rim was level before the game finally tipped off, Pittsburgh was able to warm up before the game.

The Cyclones, however, were not. When the game finally started, Iowa State missed each of their first twelve attempts from the field and did not make any of their field goals until over ten games of game time had passed.

All five of the starters for Pittsburgh made field goals before a single player on Iowa State was able to connect. After trailing 21-2, the Cyclones went on a 17-4 run to cut the deficit to 26-19.

While we don’t know if this was the reason why the Cyclones had such a slow start, the two teams will switch rims at the end of the first half.

If the Panthers also struggle to connect from the field, it’s time that we all start to raise some eyebrows about whether or not the crooked rim was ever legitimately fixed.

Either way, however, it seems a bit unfair that Pittsburgh was able to warm up before the game but Iowa State was not given the same opportunity before tipoff.

Kennesaw State’s reaction to hearing its name on Selection Sunday for the first time ever was simply the best

Hootie Hoo, y’all.

Kennesaw State’s men’s basketball team has known for a week that it was going to the NCAA tournament for the first time ever.

But that didn’t spoil any feelings of enthusiasm the Owls’ players, coaches and fans felt when they heard their name on Selection Sunday for the first time.

The Owls – champions of the Atlantic Sun Conference – were given a No. 14 seed and will face No. 3 Xavier in the first round on Friday in Greensboro, North Carolina And when the folks packed inside the KSU Convocation Center saw their school’s name in yellow and black flash on the big screen, they erupted with joy.

Kennesaw State punched its ticket to the tournament by beating Liberty in the ASUN title game on March 5. The Owls are 26-8 this season, which is their best record since joining Division I in 2005.

The Owls are coached by Amir Abdur-Rahim, brother of former NBA player Shareef Abdur-Rahim.

Ahead of the tournament, basketball fans should familiarize themselves with KSU guard Chris Youngblood, who averages 14.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

Should the Owls upset Xavier, they’ll play the winner of Iowa State and a First Four game between Pitt and Mississippi State.

Kennesaw isn’t that far from Atlanta, so if you’re rooting for them, do your best OutKast impression and give a Hootie Hoo shoutout.

Cincinnati vs Kennesaw State Game Preview

Why Kennesaw State Will Win

The Owls struggled in the season opener against Samford, but it has a dangerous offense, the downfield passing game is going to push the secondary when it gives it a shot, and the attack should perk up and be better than it was in Week 1.

It wasn’t able to hit the deep passes against the Bulldogs to go along with its normally dangerous running game, but it’s there.

The O is going to press the Bearcats in all phases – it was third in the FCS last season in rushing – and and the UC defense has to gear it up fast after the loss to Arkansas and with the rivalry game with Miami University up next.

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Cincinnati has the defense to hold up.

It was a tough 31-24 loss at Arkansas last week, but the D was able to come up with just enough stops to keep the game alive. The offense wasn’t as sharp or dangerous as it was last season, but the offensive line is still great, new quarterback Ben Bryant was terrific, and the tempo will make a difference.

Kennesaw State has to win the time of possession battle by a large margin, and it probably won’t.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Cincinnati showed that it’s still for real in the loss to Arkansas. That was a road game against a strong SEC West team – it was a good fight in a tough game.

This week it will all kick in. Kennesaw State is a good FCS team that’s going to hit everyone else hard with its running game, but the season will need another week before it kicks in gear.

Notre Dame part of tough nonconference schedules for Power Five teams

The Irish will be part of tough schedules for some teams this year.

Any team that has Notre Dame on its nonconference schedule automatically receives a bump in the strength of that schedule. Even during seasons in which the Irish struggle, there at least is a bump interest for that game. Either way, any matchup with the Irish is serious business.

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports has released a piece comparing nonconference schedules for the entire Football Bowl Subdivision. For the Power Five conferences and the AAC, he lists the nonconference schedules for the teams he believes have the toughest and weakest in those conferences. Notre Dame pops up in the toughest nonconference schedule for Georgia Tech in the ACC, USC in the Pac-12, and Cincinnati in the AAC. In fact, Palm ranks the Yellow Jackets as having the fifth toughest nonconference schedule in all of the FBS.

Here are the other nonconference opponents for all the teams that have the Irish on their schedules:

  • Georgia Tech: Georgia, Northern Illinois, Kennesaw State
  • USC: BYU, San Jose State
  • Cincinnati: Indiana, Miami (Ohio), Murray State
