Predicting 7 players Cowboys will make inactive vs Buccaneers

Here’s @KDDrummondNFL taking a look at the Cowboys roster, where they have surplus and what their strategy might be in choosing the group that will be inactive.

The Dallas Cowboys have announced their 55-man talent pool they have to choose from for Sunday night’s season opener against the Pirate Ship Brady. Of course NFL rules don’t allow the club to bring all 55 players into the water, rather they have to leave some of their roster on the sideline, playing dress up, hopefully getting motivated to force their way to the game-day roster.

For now though, the Cowboys coaching staff led by Mike McCarthy has another job to do, after the week worth of swim lessons. He and the coordinators will have a battle over which seven end-of-roster guys will be best served staying on the beach.

Starting in the 2020 season, game-day active rosters, which used to be limited to 46 players per team, can be bumped up to 48, as long as at least eight of those 48 are offensive linemen. The Cowboys have eight lineman on the regular roster, and all three backups are much needed. Here’s our best guess at the seven players, who almost to a man have waited all offseason for their chance to play, just to get it snatched from them in a numbers game.

Cowboys Injury Report: Secondary depth takes blow with Joseph, Mukuamu exits vs Seahawks

Winning isn’t everything, especially in the preseason. With roster cuts looming, injuries in Friday’s win against Seattle could impact moves the club has to make. From @ProfessorO_NFL

The Dallas Cowboys pulled out a gutsy win against the Seattle Seahawks in week 3 of the 2022 preseason.  While the win was nice, one of the main objectives of training camp and preseason is to walk away as healthy as possible.

The Cowboys had fared well in avoiding injuries through their first two preseason games but were not as fortunate tonight. Already dealing with losing their starting left tackle, Tyron Smith, earlier in the week, the Cowboys suffered a slew of injuries against the Seahawks.

With a final roster cutdown from 80 players to 53 looming around the corner, the status of these injuries may have ripple effects that change the decision making of who’s in and who’s out.

Here’s an updated injury report from week 3 based on what we know right now.

Cowboys’ Kelvin Joseph evaluated for head injury early in Q1 vs Seahawks

After a collision on the first drive in Dallas, Kelvin Joseph went to the tent before being escorted to the locker room with a head injury. | From @CDBurnett7

Dallas cornerback Kelvin Joseph has spent the offseason in a battle to earn playing time during the 2022 season. With Jourdan Lewis recovering from a hamstring injury, Joseph gained the opportunity for extra reps in practice on top of chances in preseason contests.

Joseph has had rookie cornerback DaRon Bland breathing down his neck all offseason with his success and clear confidence during the first two preseason games. Joseph started the final preseason game for Dallas and went straight to the medical tent after a collision on an incomplete pass. After a few minutes of medical attention, Joseph was escorted to the locker room.

The Cowboys later announced that it’s a head injury for Joseph, whose return is uncertain.

This is another wrench in the gears for Joseph, who is trying to fend off the competition for the fourth-string cornerback spot and his status for the last game to prove it before the regular season is now in serious question.

Tyron Smith tops list of 7 high-pedigree Cowboys who may not return in 2023

A look at several first or second-round picks who could be in different uniforms at this time next season. The Cowboys appear on the verge of a roster overturn. | From @KDDrumondNFL

The NFL is a business predicated on performance. The teams are constant, save for the occasional expansion, the same set of franchises compete year after year, decade after decade and from one century to another. The players rotate in and out, as the human body can only withstand so many collisions before starting to deteriorate.

That’s really how age shows up in the NFL; in all sports really. Talent withers away in the form of injuries that keep a player’s mind from being able to move muscles the same way they did at the age of 21 or 22. Depending on the body, some players can hold it off longer than others, but it happens to everyone, even the all-time greats. Everyone except Tom Brady, that is. For the Dallas Cowboys, this is happening in real time to Tyron Smith and it appears unlikely the team will be able to keep him on the roster beyond 2022 at his current salary.

During Smith’s first five seasons he played in all but one game. He rolled an ankle in November 2012 (his second season) after 16 snaps and missed the next contest.  He next missed time in 2016, when a back injury caused him to miss two contests in September before he sat out the regular season finale with a knee sprain, returning for the playoffs two weeks later.

Those three missed games were the first sign.

Over the next three seasons Smith would miss three games each due to a variety of injuries to his back, neck and lower body. Then in 2020 the first extended absence occurred where he played the season opener, hurt his neck in practice then returned in Week 4 just to hurt it again. Smith played two games that year, returned to suit up for just 11 (now out of 17) in 2021 and with this recent injury he’ll miss what seems to be at least 12 games this season.

It’s led to what seems like the inevitable situation that there’s no way the Cowboys will have Smith back as the starter at his current salary. When looking over the landscape of the roster, Smith isn’t the only high-pedigree draft pick (first or second round) who could be in another uniform in 2023. Here’s a look at that list.

McCarthy: Cowboys CB Kelvin Joseph expected to be ‘full go’ for training camp after ‘minor injury’

Mike McCarthy had no updates at all on Joseph’s legal status following the cornerback’s connection to a shooting death in March. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Kelvin Joseph remains a man in limbo.

The second-round cornerback from Kentucky would seem to be in a most precarious place with the Cowboys. While uncertainty continues to surround him off the field over the role he played in a fatal shooting this spring in East Dallas, his place on the team’s roster is also up in the air, with the 22-year-old having suffered an injury of some kind recently.

The club maintains that they are hopeful about both situations.

The 2021 draft pick was present during Tuesday’s minicamp-opening practice, sporting his new No. 1 jersey. But he was off to the side, not working with the defense.

With Wednesday’s and Thursday’s sessions cancelled, he’ll now wait until July’s training camp in Oxnard for a chance to get a leg up in what has become a crowded DB room.

The Cowboys currently have ten cornerbacks on the roster, ranging from last year’s interception leader Trevon Diggs to veterans Jourdan Lewis and Anthony Brown to special teams ace C.J. Goodwin to fellow sophomore Nahshon Wright to new rookies DaRon Bland, Quandre Wright, and Isaac Taylor-Stuart.

Big things are expected of Joseph in the Dallas secondary, after being the 44th overall pick last year. He saw action in 10 games as a rookie, but was limited to barely 14% of the team’s defensive snaps for the season and logged just 13 tackles.

Head coach Mike McCarthy, though, didn’t seem overly concerned about Joseph’s health as the team heads into its long break.

“I think he’s going to be okay,” the coach told reporters Thursday. “It’s a minor injury that he’s working through. I think after the five weeks off, I anticipate he’ll be a full go in training camp.”

What’s less clear is his legal outlook.

Joseph was present on the night of March 18, when Cameron Ray was shot to death outside the OT Tavern by members of a group Joseph was with. While his attorney maintains that Joseph was unarmed and not looking for trouble that night, he did not come forward regarding his involvement until a month later and did so only after his image from surveillance video had been broadcast on the local news. He was not charged after meeting with homicide detectives for several hours.

The Cowboys have reportedly addressed the matter privately with Joseph and have allowed him to participate in team activities, even as the NFL and Dallas police continue their separate reviews.

McCarthy was asked about Joseph’s legal status in mid-May, just before the Cowboys’ rookie minicamp.

“I do not have an update on that situation, and I understand the concern,” he told reporters then. “I just want you know when the situation occurred, we had a lot of internal conversation that was really in-depth. And based off the information that we’ve been given, we felt it was important to support him, and he’s been here everyday. He’s been having a pretty productive offseason so far.”

Except for the injury prognosis, the coach had no further updates on Thursday, saying, “I haven’t been told anything for at least a month.”

Joseph himself made a somewhat cryptic post to Twitter on Thursday just as the team’s pre-training camp break got underway.

Arrests made in shooting death following interview by Cowboys CB Kelvin Joseph

The two men arrested on murder charges are from Baton Rouge, the same hometown as the Cowboys second-year cornerback. | From @ToddBrock24f7

Dallas police have arrested two men in connection with the March 18 shooting death of Cameron Ray outside a Metroplex bar, one day after Cowboys second-year cornerback Kelvin Joseph interviewed with authorities in the matter.

Aries Jones, 28, and Tivione English, 21, both of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, face murder charges in the shooting. Baton Rouge is also the hometown of the 22-year-old Joseph, who was a second-round draft pick of the Cowboys in 2021.

Joseph’s attorney maintains that the Cowboys defensive back was unarmed at the time of the shooting and “not looking for violence” outside the OT Tavern in Old East Dallas.

“He found himself in a situation that escalated without his knowledge or consent,” said Barry Sorrels.

Joseph was named a person of interest after he was identified on surveillance video from outside the bar; the video showed two groups getting into a fight. Shortly after, one of the groups was fired upon by a passing SUV in which Joseph was riding. Ray, 20, from Palestine, Texas, was shot and died as a result of his injuries.

In a statement Friday, the Cowboys said they were aware of Joseph’s possible connection to the shooting. Dallas Morning News had reported that the team did not believe Joseph was the gunman, but they were advising their player to speak to authorities about the case.

Joseph did meet with homicide detectives for several hours at his attorney’s office on Friday. He did not speak with reporters afterward.

Joseph does not face charges at this time, though Texas law states that all persons in a vehicle in such a case could potentially face the same charges as the individuals who directly caused the fatality.

According to WFAA, bond for one of the jailed men was set at $250,000; the other’s bond had not been set as of Saturday afternoon.

The NFL has said the situation is under review as part of their personal conduct policy.

Kelvin Joseph’s attorney, Cowboys release statements on CBs alleged involvement in fight ending in murder

A personal attorney and the Cowboys released a statement regarding the Kelvin Joseph situation. | From @CDBurnett7

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Kelvin Joseph was identified as a person of interest in a March 18 murder. Reports from Dallas Morning News and the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram detailed Joseph’s alleged involvement in the killing of 20-year-old Cameron Ray outside the OT Tavern.

These reports come a month after Dallas police reached out to the public for details and Joseph was identified in the situation for a YKDV chain on video YKDV Bossman Fat is Joseph’s rap persona that he had used before his NFL career. DMN reported Joseph was a passenger in the vehicle when Ray was shot and killed, according to Joseph’s attorney.

“Kelvin Joseph did not shoot Cameron Ray,” Barry Sorrels, Josephs attorney, said. “Mr. Ray’s death is a tragedy, and Kelvin extends his deepest condolences for the family’s loss. On the night of March 17, Kelvin was unarmed and was not looking for violence. He found himself in a situation that escalated without his knowledge or consent.”

The Cowboys released an official statement on Friday, one day after the initial report.

An NFL spokesperson also said the situation is under review for the league’s personal conduct policy.

Joseph played sparingly in 10 games as a rookie, but earned playing time in dominant wins on the tail end of the season. The Kentucky product is expected to compete for the second starting spot with Anthony Brown.

Cowboys’ Kelvin Joseph showed plenty promise to fulfill draft expectations down stretch of 2021

Kelvin Joseph was delayed by injury and unexpected improved play in front of him on the depth chart, but stepped up when called upon. @StarConscience looks at his rookie campaign.

The Cowboys hit the jackpot with cornerback Trevon Diggs in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft and he’s registered 14 interceptions in 28 games so far. Dallas decided to add another piece to the cornerback position in the 2021 NFL draft by selecting Kelvin Joseph out of Kentucky who was tied for second in the SEC with four interceptions during his final collegiate season, returning one for a touchdown.

Joseph’s rookie campaign started slowly during OTAs due to a 10-day quarantine for COVID. Once training camp started in Oxnard, however, Joseph began to hit his stride as he got work on the outside with Diggs and in the slot going against wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Unfortunately, Joseph suffered a groin injury before the end of the preseason and was placed on injured reserve which delayed his NFL debut until Week 8. Things slowly built from there for the exciting rookie.

The 44th overall pick in 2021 got his first career start in Week 16 against the Washington Football Team, and he didn’t disappoint. Joseph played 57 snaps and registered three tackles and a pass breakup while allowing minus two yards on five targets in the Cowboys’ 56-14 victory.

In the Cowboys season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, Joseph got his second start. Playing all of the team’s 74 defensive snaps in a 51-26 rout, Joseph tallied nine tackles (seven solo) and nearly got his first career interception.

Joseph logged 150 snaps in the final three games after just 14 in the first seven he played. He displayed the sticky coverage skills that made him one of the top cornerbacks coming out of the college ranks and even showed he can provide support against the run.

Anthony Brown had his best season in 2021 and made it hard for Joseph to see action. However, Joseph was drafted to be the Cowboys’ starter of the future opposite Diggs. The versatility of lining up on the outside and in the slot gives defensive coordinator Dan Quinn a lot to work with in the event an injury occurs.

Speaking of Quinn, he brought a different attitude and confidence to the Cowboys’ defense this season with his hands-on approach. That led to his unit being No. 1 in turnovers with 34 (tops in the NFL with 26 interceptions). Joseph is the perfect player under Quinn seeing as he revealed that same type of moxy during training camp.

“We’re going to fly around,” Joseph said. “No-fly zone. We’re gonna call it airplane mode.

“When y’all drop this interview, tell them, ‘Cowboys defense,’ Kelvin Joseph says, ‘airplane mode.’ You can’t throw. No-fly zone.”

Joseph only scratched the surface of his potential as a rookie and should make a lot more noise in 2022 as his role expands.

If Cowboys go BPA, Auburn CB Roger McCreary could be too good to pass up

Tyler Browning ( @DiabeticTyler ) takes a dive into the film of the player who would lock down the opposite side of the field as Trevon Diggs.

The Dallas Cowboys have massively benefitted from a jump in play for second-year corner Trevon Diggs. But what about the rest of the CB position? Jourdan Lewis is locked in until the end of the 2023 season, and Anthony Brown’s deal expires following 2022. The Cowboys recently invested in Nahshon Wright with the 99th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and Kelvin “Bossman Fat” Joseph with the 44th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

What does the long term plan at the position look like for the Dallas Cowboys? Will Brown be re-signed? He will be 30 when he is looking for a new deal and Lewis will be 29. Will Wright and Joseph develop into quality starters? Can the Cowboys wait for those answers before addressing that position again? Many a wise person has said draft for talent as free agency is meant to fill for needs on your roster.

If Auburn cornerback Roger McCreary is available when the Cowboys are on the clock in the 2022 NFL Draft, they may be very tempted to take him. A dive into the tape to figure out why is necessary.

WATCH: Cowboys’ Kelvin Joseph, Raiders’ Teamer ejected for fighting

The Cowboys and Raiders enjoyed a dustup after a punt and two key figures were sent to the showers.

The Dallas Cowboys have had to fight the referees and the Raiders all day long, but coming out of the half they had to actually fight.  After a three-and-out forced Las Vegas to punt, the kick sailed out of bounds after bouncing right inside the sideline. Play over, right? Wrong.

Special teameers Kelvin Joseph and Roderic Teamer got tangled up and kept tussling past the bench and into a rail. Before long, both teams were involved in a scrum off the side of the field. When the dust settled, both of the key combatants were called for unsportsmanlike conduct and had been tossed from the game.

During the scrum, field judge Tom Hill was hit on the face, causing a small cut on his chin. On replay it appeared that Joseph was on the receiving end of the aggression and was defending himself, but it doesn’t matter his day is over.
