2023 Senior Bowl Preview: Interior Defensive Line

We continue our 2023 Senior Bowl preview with the interior defensive line

One of the most important events on the National Football League calendar is the Senior Bowl. Held the week after the conference championship games, it is the true beginning of the NFL draft cycle.

Not only do scouts and analysts like us get to see over 100 draft prospects in one place competing against each other, but it’s also an opportunity for analysts and personnel alike to get together and have discussions about a number of topics.

As we look forward to this year’s Senior Bowl, both managing editor Tyler Forness and columnist Matt Anderson will be there in person to break everything down.

We will be breaking down each position group and what to look for throughout the week. Here is the interior defensive line position.

The Draft Network gives the Browns Keeanu Benton in 2023 NFL Mock Draft

The Browns upgrade their defensive interior in a recent mock draft

We are now in full swing heading toward the 2023 NFL Draft as mock drafts will become a prevalent thing. We have our own here at Browns Wire, but we will also cover who the Cleveland Browns land in other mock drafts around the nation on different sites. In a mock draft done by Keith Sanchez at The Draft Network, the Browns were given Wisconsin defensive tackle Keeanu Benton.

The Wisconsin defensive tackle, however, would not be the choice if it were my choice as a few others are graded above him in my rankings. Alabama defensive tackle Byron Young remains one of the most slept-on prospects in the class, and Florida’s Gervon Dexter should come off the board before Benton as well.

Browns add playmakers to both sides of the ball in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft

The Browns get more impact players on both sides of the ball.

The 2023 NFL Draft cycle is starting to heat up with the Senior Bowl in Mobile right around the corner. The Browns’ defensive line needs a maker over at both positions, especially with the arrival of Jim Schwartz. Schwartz is known for his ability to manipulate offensive lines to get favorable matchups.

The team needs to utilize the draft and free agency to re-make this defensive line for more success next season. The defense isn’t the only side of the ball that needs additions as the offense must figure out how to get more explosive.

This mock draft looks at a way to get playmakers in several different areas to improve the team.

Who left Wisconsin football following the 2022 season?

A look at transfers, players leaving for the draft, and coaches who have moved on from Wisconsin football

This offseason has been filled with excitement for Badger fans as new head coach Luke Fickell has brought in a whole new staff and over a dozen players via the transfer portal.

With the addition of offensive coordinator Phil Longo and his “Air Raid” offense, Wisconsin has earned the commitments of three quarterbacks and four wide receivers, including C.J. Williams from USC, the highest rated WR in modern program history.

That being said, with everyone paying so much attention to those coming into the program, it’d be easy to lose track of the players that have decided to move on from the Badgers following the 2022 campaign.

Here’s where the departures have ended up:

Report: Linebacker Goetz returning in 2023

C.J. Goetz is expected to return and play for the Badgers in 2023 after finishing third on the team in tackles this season.

With Nick Herbig, Keeanu Benton and John Torchio heading to the NFL after the conclusion of the Badgers’ 2022 campaign, the Badgers’ defense will look much different in 2023, but the team will retain a key starter in linebacker C.J. Goetz next season. The Muskego native will exercise an additional year of eligibility with Wisconsin and will likely operate in a leadership role on Mike Tressel’s defense.

Goetz played in all 13 of the Badgers’ games this season, recording 62 tackles, including two sacks, while also deflecting two passes over those contests.

Along with Jordan Turner and Maema Njongmeta, the return of Goetz in 2023 will provide Wisconsin with each of their top three tackle-getters from this campaign once again next year.

Unpacking Future Packers: No. 95, Wisconsin DL Keeanu Benton

Up next in Unpacking Future Packers draft preview series is Wisconsin DL Keeanu Benton.

The Unpacking Future Packers Countdown is a countdown of 100 prospects that could be selected by the Green Bay Packers in the 2023 NFL draft.

Green Bay’s run defense yielded 2,372 yards on the ground, which ranked 26th overall. They gave up five yards per carry, which was tied for 29th in the league.

The Packers need to improve against the run next season and if past history is any indicator, Brian Gutekunst will pour resources into fixing the leaky run defense.

Last season the Packers needed to vastly improve on special teams. Gutekunst attacked the issue with great vigor. The Packers went out and hired one of the best special teams coordinators in the league. They signed players like Keisean Nixon and Dallin Leavitt. They drafted players with plenty of special teams experience like Tariq Carpenter.

It’s reasonable to expect that Gutekunst will add a player or two up front to help shore up the run defense.

A player that Gutekunst could target in the 2023 NFL Draft is Keeanu Benton. The Wisconsin defensive tackle checks in at No. 95 in the Unpacking Future Packers countdown.

A three-star recruit, Benton finished his first season at Wisconsin with four tackles for loss and two sacks. During the 2020 season, Benton started five games and forced two fumbles. The following season the Badger nose tackle recorded five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. This past season, Benton recorded 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

Benton’s calling card is his ability to two-gap. He’s a stout run defender that can clog up running lanes. He’s got a powerful frame with long arms to stack blocks. His motor is always running and gives great effort with the lateral quickness to chase down ball carriers.

The Badger defensive tackle is not just a roadblock, he’s a disruptive force that blows plays up behind the line of scrimmage. That was on full display over the final month of the season, when he recorded seven tackles for loss over the final four games.

“Against the run, Benton is one of the better players in the draft,” Rohan Chakravarthi, the site manager for Bucky’s 5th Quarter said. “His power makes him a regular disruptor in the backfield. Benton regularly required double teams, creating opportunities for his teammates in both facets of the game, which may even be his best strength. Benton’s length does him well in the run game against opposing offensive linemen as well.”

Part of what makes Benton such a force against the run is his raw power. He’s got powerful arms to rag-doll offensive linemen. When he plays with proper pad leverage he can be an unstoppable force in the interior.

Benton’s greatest strength is his power,” Chakravarthi said. “With solid athleticism for his size, Benton’s power as a 6’4-315 defensive tackle operates as a big-time disrupter in the run game, while also showing the ability to rush the passer as well. When playing with good balance, Benton has the power to overwhelm opposing linemen, and sheds blocks fairly well.”

Benton’s power translates as a pass rusher. Once he gets under the pads of the offensive lineman he can walk them back into the quarterback’s lap with his bull rush. He has good initial quickness off the snap and has great closing burst to the quarterback. He finished this past season with 4.5 sacks and according to Pro Football Focus finished second on the team with 25 pressures.

“Benton is relatively raw as a pass-rusher as he exhibits the traits, but not the pass-rushing moves as much,” Chakravarthi said. “However, the potential is certainly there for him to be a three-down player. If Benton remains consistent with his pad level, his power will aid him as a pass-rusher as he develops more moves. Benton’s strength is definitely as a run-defender, but there is upside as a pass-rusher as well.”

Fit with the Packers

With Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, and TJ Slaton, the Packers have a solid foundation in place up front. Now, Gutekunst needs to add pieces around that trio.

Benton could step in from day one and help shore up Green Bay’s run defense that yielded five yards per carry. He’d eat up double teams and help free up the linebackers to make plays. With his athleticism, he has the pass-rush potential to develop into a three-down lineman down the line.

“While the value for purely run-stuffing nose tackles has diminished, Benton provides value in that role on a two-down basis at the moment with the upside to become a three-down player,” Chakravarthi said. “His size, power, and length combine to form a solid day two player, and his ability to eat double teams adds a bonus for gap-filling linebackers. While he isn’t the most athletic or explosive interior defensive lineman, his power provides significant value for defenses looking to get better against the ground.”

Gutekunst has to be tired of watching his team get gashed on the ground. Adding Benton on day two would help Green Bay to start winning some of the battles in the trenches. Green Bay’s general manager addressed the special teams issues last offseason. Expect him to add players to help Green Bay improve against the run this off-season.

Wisconsin’s Keeanu Benton could help fix defensive tackle woes

Drafting the defense tackle in April could help the Browns overhaul their defense.

If the Cleveland Browns want to find more success in 2023 they have got to figure out the defensive tackle position. The group was one of the worst in the league last season and the room needs an overhaul. The team will likely look to address it both in the draft and free agency. When looking for defensive tackle prospects Keeanu Benton should be firmly on their list.

Benton checks in at 6-foot-4 and 317 pounds and is a great anchor in the middle of the defensive line. He has great size and strength that allows him to absorb double teams and keep his linebackers clean. There are things that Benton does that don’t show up in the stat sheet but are clear to see on film. Against the run, you get a player that isn’t easily moved and helps to eliminate explosive runs up the middle even if he isn’t the one making the tackle.

Benton will need refinement as a pass rusher at the next level but he isn’t a liability at the position. He pushes the pocket up the middle and prevents easy step-up opportunities for quarterbacks to extend plays. Drafting the Wisconsin man will have a ripple effect on the defense and Benton would greatly benefit from the attention Myles Garrett draws.

The Browns need a lot of help at the defensive tackle prospect and Benton has all the tools and traits to be a piece of the solution.

Browns find their Jadeveon Clowney replacement in 2023 NFL Mock Draft

The Browns look to improve the defensive line in April’s draft

The 2022 NFL season is about to come to an end for the Cleveland Browns and they will embark on improving the roster for 2023. The defensive line needs a lot of work, especially with the likelihood that Jadeveon Clowney will not return to the team. There is plenty of talent at both defensive tackle and defensive end in April’s NFL draft. Here, we take a stab at replacing Clowney in this 2023 NFL Mock Draft.

If the Browns want the defense to improve next season added talent next to and opposite Myles Garrett is a must. Once compensatory picks are announced the team will have a total of eight picks to improve the roster to try and return to the postseason in 2023.

Five Badgers declare for the 2023 NFL draft

Over the last week, five Wisconsin Badgers have declared for the 2023 NFL draft:

Over the last week, several Wisconsin Badgers announced that they would be declaring for the 2023 NFL draft and presumably forgoing the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against Oklahoma State.

The first Badger to announce their decision to declare last week was cornerback Justin Clark, who transferred to Wisconsin from Toledo for his final year of eligibility. Unfortunately, Clark struggled to stay healthy throughout the season and only played in five games this year recording 10 total tackles.

Senior transfer cornerback Jay Shaw and junior offensive lineman Joe Tippmann announced their decisions on Thursday. Shaw started in every game for the Badgers this year and racked up 31 total tackles, six passes defended and an interception. Tippmann has been a consistent presence on the Badgers’ offensive line this season and was named as a consensus All-Big Ten honorable mention.

Wisconsin senior nose tackle Keeanu Benton announced his decision on Twitter on Friday night after his dominant senior season for the Badgers. Benton ranked in the top 20 in sacks and tackles for loss in the Big Ten this year with 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He was a third-team All-Big Ten selection by coaches and was named as an honorable mention by the media.

The latest Badger to announce his decision was junior outside linebacker Nick Herbig, who has been one of the best edge rushers in the county this season. He was named a second-team Walter Camp All-American and a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection after racking up a conference-high 11 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss this season.

It will definitely be tough for Wisconsin to lose so much talent ahead of their bowl game, but it will be very exciting to see these Badgers take the step to the next level.

Below are the five Badgers’ announcements to declare for the 2023 NFL draft:

2023 NFL Mock Draft: Browns trade down, land Lukas Van Ness and Byron Young

The weather is getting colder, which means the season for mock drafts is getting warmer!

As the weather continues to get colder in Northeast Ohio, the 2023 NFL Mock Drafts are going to heat up. With the 2023 NFL Draft now just five months away, and with the Cleveland Browns sitting at 5-7 on the season, there are reasons for trying to fill current voids on the current roster. What better way to prepare for a game tomorrow against the Cincinnati Bengals than with a mock draft today?

Again, the Browns currently hold the 47th overall pick in the draft as the first time they will come on the clock after a blockbuster trade this summer for quarterback Deshaun Watson. With needs all over the defensive side of the football and a few places on the offensive side of the ball, we do our best here to plug some gaps on the roster.

This draft was completed using PFF’s mock draft simulator. Please note PFF has left off the Browns’ third round compensatory pick they will receive. This has been added to the mock draft.
