Tom Brady got right in Chiefs lineman Chris Jones’ face during a heated exchange

Tom Brady wasn’t scared.

There aren’t many players in the NFL who are too good for trash talk. The list honestly might just be Tom Brady and Larry Fitzgerald. But at least on Sunday, Brady didn’t back down from the opportunity to get into an opponent’s face.

The Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots met for a rematch of last season’s AFC Championship Game, which didn’t bring back the fondest memories for Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones. You may remember that Jones was called for an extremely questionable roughing penalty during that AFC title game as New England rallied to win.

Whether that had anything to do with the exchange that unfolded during the second quarter of Sunday’s game, we don’t know. But Jones and Brady went face-to-face before being separated by Patriots players.

Oh, that was just a 42-year-old future Hall of Famer getting ready to throw down with a 6-foot-6, 311-pound defensive lineman. No big deal.

We may never know for certain what Jones and Brady said to each other, but NFL fans had a few guesses.

That’s the showdown we never knew we needed.

12 of the best games of the 2019 NFL season

The Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens were among the teams in the NFL best games of 2019.

The San Francisco 49ers and the New Orleans Saints put on an incredible offensive display for 60 minutes in the Big Easy Sunday before the Niners came away with a 48-46 victory. This sets the bar for 2019 NFL games. Here are some of the others for the year-end highlight reel.

New Orleans wound up on the winning end of this score in Week 1. It appeared as if the Saints were headed for defeat when Kenny Stills caught a 37-yard TD pass from Deshaun Watson with 43 seconds left. Drew Brees led a stirring final drive that set up a field-goal attempt in the final seconds. Will Lutz was true from 58 yards. It was the third score in the final minute as Lutz had kicked field goal from 47 yards with 55 seconds left.

C Ted Karras, TE Ryan Izzo out for Patriots vs. Chiefs in Week 14

No surprises on Sunday for New England.

The New England Patriots will be without starting center Ted Karras (knee) on Sunday. He was ruled out on Friday after missing every practice in preparation for the team’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Week 14.

Here’s a look at the team’s inactives this week.

Aside from his injury, the Patriots are looking relatively healthy this week, with receivers Julian Edelman (shoulder) and Mohamed Sanu (ankle) playing despite limitations during the week. LinebackersĀ Jaā€™Whaun Bentley (knee) and John Simon (elbow), tackle Marcus Cannon (illness), safety Patrick Chung (heel) and cornerback Jason McCourty (groin) will also play despite being listed as questionable.

McCourty is making his return after missing in Week 13.

The Chiefs enter this clash having secured a key division win their last time out. They throttled the Oakland Raiders, 40-9, to give themselves some breathing room atop the AFC West. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense only managed 259 total yards for the game, but their defense forced three turnovers that put the Chiefs in easy scoring positions throughout the game. Against the Patriots, turnovers may not come as easily and Mahomes will need to be much sharper.

New England suffered its second loss of the season last week, falling 28-22 to the Houston Texans. The Patriots allowed DeShaun Watson to throw for three touchdown passes, as the Texans went ahead 28-9 in the game and were able to coast the rest of the way to victory. The Patriots have struggled against Lamar Jackson and Watson this season, both dual-threat quarterbacks, and will need to tighten up their defense against a third mobile quarterback in Mahomes if they want to avoid another defeat.

Kurt Warner makes stunningly bold prediction ahead of Chiefs vs. Patriots

Um, what?

Social media is watching, Kurt Warner.

The retired NFL quarterback and NFL Network analyst had a staggeringly bold prediction for the New England Patriots’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Gillette Stadium on Sunday in Week 14. Without a doubt, Patriots fans on Twitter will keep him honest after the game, if he proves wrong.

ā€œSince Tom Brady took over as a starter, 367 times weā€™ve seen a home team lose by 20 or more points,ā€ Warner said on NFL Networkā€™s ā€œNFL GameDay Morningā€ on Sunday morning. ā€œFor Tom Brady, itā€™s only happened one time. I say today, heā€™s going to suffer his worst loss at home against the Chiefs. It would be 25 points. Their worst loss up at this point, 24 points, Chargers back in 2005. I will say worst loss in the Belichick-Brady era at home.ā€

New England has run into a rough patch this season. But a historic loss at Gillette? That seems far-fetched.

An equipment mishap had the Chiefs scurrying to avoid a forfeit against the Patriots

Uh, what?

The Kansas City Chiefs arrived to Foxborough, Mass., for Sunday’s showdown against the Patriots. There was just one problem:

The gear for around 35 players arrived in New Jersey. And no, the Patriots were not involved.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, equipment containers with the Chiefs’ shoulder pads and helmets weren’t unloaded from the team’s charter plane when it arrived in New England on Saturday. The plane continued on to Newark, New Jersey, which had the Chiefs scurrying to get the equipment back to New England in time for kickoff.

Had the Chiefs not realized the equipment mishap in time for kickoff, league rules would have required Kansas City to forfeit a marquee game. Could you imagine that? Today is not a great day to be the Chiefs equipment manager.

Schefter continued to report that the Chiefs expected the gear to arrive at around 3 p.m. ET — well ahead of the 4:30 p.m. kickoff time.

This is your chance, New England fans, to clog up every road to Gillette Stadium.

Report: Chiefs’ equipment mishap puts them in danger of forfeiture vs. Patriots

The Patriots were not involved.

The Kansas City Chiefs were in danger of forfeiting to the New England Patriots in Week 14 due to an equipment mishap, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. A significant portion of the team’s pads were sent to New Jersey — not Massachusetts.

That has left the Chiefs scrambling to get the equipment to Gillette Stadium before the game begins on Sunday. They expect it to arrive by 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.Ā If team cannot get the equipment to the proper place before the game starts, they will be forced to forfeit.

Here’s a look at what ESPN’s Schefter reported:

“An equipment container that contained some of the Chiefs‘ shoulder pads, helmets and footballs was not unloaded on Saturday and instead accidentally made its way to Newark, New Jersey where it now is being rushed back to Boston in time for Sunday’s 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff between Kansas City and the New England Patriots, per league sources.

“It was roughly 35 players’ bags, according to a source.

“Kansas City is responsible, not the Patriots or the league. The Chiefs did not take the equipment off the plane.”

Of course, it’s important to clarify the Patriots, who are oft-accused of cheating, were not involved in the Chiefs’ equipment transportation.

Patriots vs. Chiefs: Betting odds, analysis and prediction

An opportunity to bury the doubt is on the line for the New England Patriots in Sunday’s heavyweight showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Patrick Mahomes Show comes rolling into town at a time when the rest of the world is ready to write the obituary of Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. A heavyweight showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday represents a chance to put all of the doom and gloom talk to rest.

Itā€™s a chance for the Patriots to shift the raging locomotive into the highest gear and speed down the tracks into the playoffs.

The vaunted defense had no answers for the Houston Texans and quarterback Deshaun Watson a week ago. Things will get infinitely more difficult when attempting to ground the high-flying Chiefs offense led by one of the greatest young quarterbacks in NFL history.

Not to mention the inevitable Yoda vs. Yoda coaching battle between Bill Belichick and Andy Reid.

The Chiefs have won their last two consecutive games, including a blistering 40-9 victory over the Oakland Raiders. Watson earned his first win over Brady last week. Will it be Mahomesā€™ turn on Sunday? The Patriots will enter the game at -3 favorites with the over/under being 49 points.

Why you should pick the Patriots

Iā€™ve seen this story before.

The superhuman Patriots are suddenly reduced to vulnerable and breakable the week after a loss. Theyā€™re the Elijah Price team of the NFL. Of course, the story usually ends with them blowing out a really good team and putting the rest of the league on notice.

Many of the issues for the Patriots offense have been mostly based on poor technique and timing. Receivers arenā€™t running good routes, and Brady is stuck playing developmental coach at a time when heā€™s supposed to be competing. Itā€™s after Thanksgiving and real football has started.

Even Phillip Dorsett, a veteran receiver in his third season with the Patriots, seemed as lost as rookies Nā€™Keal Harry and Jakobi Meyers last week.

But there is hope for the team to hit its stride late in 2019.

Meyers would have neared 100 receiving yards and probably caught a touchdown pass against the Texans if penalties and a bad route didnā€™t get in the way. Harry will be on the field for his fourth game with the team, and Dorsett has obviously been around long enough to know what he needs to clean up in Week 14. Donā€™t sleep on the positives in the maelstrom of negativity.

The offensive line showing some fight last week means Brady should have time to throw against a vulnerable Chiefs defense he managed to carve up on two separate occasions last season.

On the other side of the ball, Belichick was able to slow down Mahomes in the first-half of the AFC Championship. You can rest assured heā€™ll enter Sundayā€™s game with some unique wrinkle to throw the young quarterback off guard. The Patriots have the personnel to match-up on the backend of their defense. Without question, this will be the best secondary the Chiefs have faced all season.

Why you should pick the Chiefs

Weā€™re in Week 14 and talking about receivers not being on the same page with the quarterback. That would signal the death knell for any other team in the league but the Patriots. Yet, thereā€™s always the tendency to give them the benefit of the doubt with Brady behind center and Belichick on the sideline.

But these arenā€™t the same Patriots anymore.

Brady appears to be frustrated with more than just football at this point, and he has arguably his worst cast of receiving talent in his professional career. If the Chiefs can take away Patriots receiver Julian Edelman and running back James White in the passing game, it will likely be another long afternoon for Brady and company.

Seeing the ease at which Watson was able to counter the Patriots beloved zero blitz is also a bad sign heading into a game against Mahomes and the Chiefsā€™ speedy receivers. Not even Belichick has the courage to bring the house with the human blur, Tyreek Hill, flanked out wide.

The Patriots defense has struggled against mobile quarterbacks this season, and no one is better than dialing up big plays from defensive breakdowns than Mahomes. Heā€™s always a threat to make a play regardless of the down and distance.

Trends

Via Covers.com:

  • Chiefs are 19-9 ATS in their last 28 games against teams in the AFC.
  • Chiefs are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 road games when playing against a team with a winning record at home.
  • Patriots are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games played in the month of December.

Prediction

The smart pick is the Chiefs and the over on Sunday.

Rob Gronkowski will be calling the game as a Fox Sports analyst, and Antonio Brown will be somewhere tweeting about it. Help isnā€™t coming for Brady and the offense.

Theyā€™ll need plenty of help when attempting to keep pace with a Chiefs offense that can pile up points at the snap of a finger. It would take a virtuoso performance the likes of what we saw from the Patriots defense at Super Bowl LIII to stop Mahomes. Reidā€™s play-calling is too good, and Mahomes is too dangerous with the myriad of offensive weapons at his disposal.

If the Patriots offense couldnā€™t answer the bell against the depleted Texans defense, itā€™s hard to envision them hitting the switch against a Chiefs unit that seems to be ascending at the right time. It will be more of the same on Sunday. The running game will hardly be a factor, and a screaming Brady will continue to sink when the Chiefs defense set their sights on Edelman and White.

Iā€™m taking the Chiefs and the points.

How to watch Patriots vs. Chiefs

The New England Patriots (10-2) will host the Kansas City Chiefs (8-4) in Week 14.

After a discouraging loss to the Houston Texans, the Patriots are looking to bounce back in all three phases of the game. The offense couldn’t find any rhythm until later in the game and Houston exposed matchups against New England’s defense — resulting in four passing touchdowns. Tom Brady’s lack of chemistry with his receivers has been a glaring issue, but the Patriots feel like they can resolve this before the playoffs.

Kansas City is heading into the game with an underwhelming record, but they’ve dealt with multiple injuries this season. Patrick Mahomes missed a couple games with what seemed to be a season-ending injury and Tyreek Hill has been in and out of the lineup. Both teams are hungry for a huge conference win because of the playoff implications that will stem from this game.

3 keys for Patriots to beat Chiefs in Week 14

Three keys for the Patriots to beat the Chiefs in Week 14.

Already noted as a marquee game before the start of the season, this week’s battle between the Kansas City Chiefs (8-4) and New England Patriots (10-2) feels a little different heading into the contest than many expected, but no less anticipated and important in the AFC. Here are three keys for a Patriots victory.

1. Play effective man coverage

The Patriots love to play man coverage. In fact, they play man (61.7 percent) more than any other team this season, according to NFL’s Next Gen Stats.

In turn, Patrick Mahomes has seen the most man coverage (49.3 percent of dropbacks) in the NFL.

Last year, New England took deep threat Tyreek Hill out of the game via a double team with Jonathan Jones in man coverage and Devin McCourty over top, with Stephon Gilmore playing man coverage on Kansas City’s No. 2 wideout, Sammy Watkins.

Bucky Brooks calls this a Cover 1 Rat defense, with the free safety (McCourty) directly lined up above Hill, with Jones in that underneath man coverage.

Considering the success New England had with this at times in last season’s AFC title game, the Patriots would be wise to lean on that again. They have the personel (league’s best secondary) to do it.

Of course, the Patriots will still need to cover tight end Travis Kelce in man coverage, and Gilmore is a better option for that in most scenarios, over the likes of Patrick Chung, Jason McCourty and J.C. Jackson.

Regardless, man coverage is the way to go versus Mahomes and Chiefs, if you can swing it. And the Patriots can.

2. FINALLY get the passing game going

Regardless if they play effective defense or not, the Chiefs will scoreĀ someĀ points — and likely more points than New England’s normal opponent.

So the Patriots will need to score some points.

Will the offenseĀ finallyĀ get things going through the air on Sunday?

Kansas City has been better on defense in recent weeks, with rookie Juan Thornhill and the versatile Tyrann Mathieu playing well at safety.Ā But a 40-9 win over the Oakland Raiders looks less impressive when the Raiders lost to the New York Jets, 34-3, the week before.

Even with the potential to affectively rush Brady, the Patriots should be able to get something going through the air.

Philip Dorsett and Mohamed Sanu should be fully healthy, and N’Keal Harry should be able to learn from last week’s disappointing effort.Ā Couple that with potential huge games for Julian Edelman and James White, and there is a chance New England gets something going through the air. We’ve said this in prior weeks, butĀ thisĀ has to be the week.

3. Come close to repeating rushing success from 2018 AFC title game

The Chiefs are still struggling against the run. They’re 30th in the NFL in rushing defense, allowing 141.3 yards per game on the ground.

Last season, Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead had success on the ground versus the Chiefs in the 2018 AFC Championship Game — Patriots rushed for 176 yards and four touchdowns.

Without David Andrews, James Develin and Rob Gronkowski, New England has struggled to run the ball, but has seen glimpses of success with the return of left tackle Isaiah Wynn.

Whether or not they have success through the air, they’ll have to also have some success on the ground.
