The Kansas City Chiefs were in danger of forfeiting to the New England Patriots in Week 14 due to an equipment mishap, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. A significant portion of the team’s pads were sent to New Jersey — not Massachusetts.
That has left the Chiefs scrambling to get the equipment to Gillette Stadium before the game begins on Sunday. They expect it to arrive by 3 p.m. or 3:30 p.m. If team cannot get the equipment to the proper place before the game starts, they will be forced to forfeit.
Here’s a look at what ESPN’s Schefter reported:
“An equipment container that contained some of the Chiefs‘ shoulder pads, helmets and footballs was not unloaded on Saturday and instead accidentally made its way to Newark, New Jersey where it now is being rushed back to Boston in time for Sunday’s 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff between Kansas City and the New England Patriots, per league sources.
“It was roughly 35 players’ bags, according to a source.
“Kansas City is responsible, not the Patriots or the league. The Chiefs did not take the equipment off the plane.”
Of course, it’s important to clarify the Patriots, who are oft-accused of cheating, were not involved in the Chiefs’ equipment transportation.
