Notre Dame football: 5 things to know for Dec. 2, 2022

An unexpectedly busy day in case you need to catch up

Well we’ve made it through our first work week of the postseason and Notre Dame will find out its bowl destination on Sunday. As we discussed earlier in the week, chances seem pretty strong that it will end up in Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl. One outlet still had it heading to the Holiday Bowl, so perhaps there will be a surprise.

Thursday wound up being a fairly busy day in the Notre Dame athletic land as expected College Football Playoff news was finally made official, perhaps the most intriguing quarterback to date entered the portal and the Irish landed their 26th commitment. All of that, a heartbreaking loss for the Irish women’s basketball team, and Paul Finebaum’s latest thoughts on Notre Dame’s independence are in your Five Things to Know for Friday, Dec. 2, 2022.

Notre Dame lands another speedy receiver in 2023 recruiting class

Notre Dame continues to do work recruiting in Texas! Welcome Kaleb Smith!

Notre Dame has landed another commitment, their 26th overall, in the 2023 recruiting class.  Kaleb Smith, a 6-0, 175-pound wide receiver from Reedy High School in Texas.  Smith joins defensive back Peyton Bowen and receivers Jaden Greathouse and Braylon James as Texas high school football stars in Notre Dame’s class.

Smith is coming off a senior season where he caught 53 passes for 786 yards and six touchdowns.  His junior year saw him catch 35 passes for 475 yards and six more touchdowns.

Smith was on campus for Notre Dame’s blowout victory over Clemson this year which came a short time after he de-committed from Texas Tech.  He chose the Irish over Texas Tech who he had as his only other finalist on Thursday evening.

This only adds more depth to a position that needs it at Notre Dame, and adds to a class that is seen currently as one of the nation’s top two or three according to nearly every major outlet.

Notre Dame to add another wide receiver commitment tonight?

Gotta like Notre Dame’s chances here, right?

By the end of the evening, we’ll know if Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class swells to 26.  That’s because wide receiver [autotag]Kaleb Smith[/autotag] of Reedy High School in Texas is set to announce his college choice this evening.

Wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey has already made a huge impact for Notre Dame in Texas as the Irish already have a pair of Texas receivers in their 2023 recruiting class.  Smith is a three-star prospect that checks in at 6-0, 175-pounds.  He was a one-time Texas Tech commitment but pulled off of that earlier this fall.  He lists Notre Dame and Texas Tech as the two finalists that he’ll be deciding between tonight.

Smith was on Notre Dame’s campus for the upset drubbing of Clemson and this one feels like the Irish have all the momentum in.

Notre Dame recruiting update: Smith decommits from Texas Tech

The stars at night, are big and bright…

Yesterday Mike Chen updated you here at Fighting Irish Wire that 2023 wide receiver target [autotag]Kaleb Smith[/autotag] was trending towards picking Notre Dame.  Smith committed to Texas Tech in early February but announced a change of heart officially on Friday.

Smith took to Twitter to announce a change of plans:

“First off, I would like to thank Texas Tech University and Coach Mcguire for giving me an opportunity to continue playing the game I love at the next level and in an amazing program,” Smith wrote on Twitter. The family and culture out in Lubbock is crazy and that’s why I’ve been committed since February.. but the Lord has presented me with more opportunities to be great and I need to explore those without a doubt.

… After a lot of thought and talks with God,, I will be decommitting from Texas Tech University and making my recruitment 100% back open. I haven’t had a full recruit experience and really want to take it slow and make sure I do it the right way. Raider Nation it’s all love, thank you for believing in me.”

Very shortly after that he announced an official offer from Notre Dame.

Smith is on campus this weekend for Notre Dame-Clemson festivities and as was pointed out yesterday, where there is smoke there is usually fire.  We might not be able to see the flames yet but we can certainly feel the heat here.

Notre Dame currently has 23 commitments in the 2023 recruiting class, four of which are from Texas.  Smith, a product of Reedy High School in Frisco, Texas would add to both of those.

Smith is graded as a three-star prospect by 247Sports and is listed at 6-0, 175-pounds.  He would join a wide receiver class that already consists of four-star talents [autotag]Braylon James[/autotag], [autotag]Jaden Greathouse[/autotag], and [autotag]Rico Flores[/autotag].

Stay tuned as it feels like a commitment isn’t far off here.

Notre Dame trending to flip current Texas Tech wide receiver commit

Could a flip be coming soon?

It is undoubtably a huge game for the Irish, not just one the field but off it as well. This game is one of the biggest during this weekends slate of games, with two teams that are perennially involved in the College Football Playoff conversation.

Even though Notre Dame has struggled during year one of the Marcus Freeman era, they have still rattled off more than a few solid wins, which include Syracuse, North Carolina and BYU. Another opportunity is in front of them to win against another ranked opponent, but the chance for them to win on the recruiting trail is gaining steam as well.

Current 2023 Texas Tech commit, wide receiver Kaleb Smith, will visit South Bend this weekend and two of 247Sports recruiting analysts (Steve Wiltfong and Tom Loy) have logged crystal balls for Smith to flip to the Irish.

Smith has been committed to Tech since February, but the Irish have come on hard recently. It is unknown if Smith will make an announcement for Notre Dame, but like the saying goes, if there’s smoke, there’s a fire. In this case the fire is a good thing.
