WATCH: Tom Izzo, Juwan Howard, and Michigan State basketball players’ media sessions following MSU’s win over Michigan

On Saturday night, Michigan State basketball earned one of their most satisfying wins of the season, taking down their rival, Michigan, in Ann Arbor 73-63.

This was an important one for MSU for many reasons. This team now has won three conference road games, something that has been extremely hard for them, and many other teams, to come by this season.

It also featured another dominant performance from Malik Hall (18 points), who, along with Tyson Walker (19 points), led the Spartans in scoring. This has been extremely encouraging sign as Michigan State approaches March.

After the game, Tom Izzo, A.J. Hoggard, Tyson Walker and Malik Hall all spoke to the media, and you can find each of those interviews below, which were recorded and posted on YouTube by SpartanMag.com. Juwan Howard, Tarris Reed Jr. and Nimari Burnett also spoke to the media, and their session was recorded by UMHoops.com.

Michigan basketball is still somehow sticking with head coach Juwan Howard

Michigan basketball is still somehow sticking with head coach Juwan Howard

Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel spoke with reporters earlier this week and expressed another vote of confidence in head basketball coach Juwan Howard.

Michigan is 8-17 this season, including an abysmal 3-11 in Big Ten play. The program was in the Elite Eight under Howard just three years ago, but it has since fallen to 19-15 in 2021-22, to 18-16 in 2022-23, then to this year’s disaster.

More specifically, the Wolverines only have two wins dating back to December 19. The program is 2-12 in that span, only with home victories against Ohio State and Wisconsin.

Despite the free-fall, Manuel seems to be sticking with Howard:

“It would be fair to say I have not really thought about any changes in our men’s basketball program at this time,” Manuel said to reporters this week. “It’s one of those things that — I guess I can’t say it any clearer; I want to support Juwan to be successful and have not given any moment or thought of anything about changes at this time. And so my support is of him, of our student-athletes, and our staff.”

I was taught years ago that a coaching job or hire is best judged by the thoughts of the program’s rivals — where if fans of the rival want a coach to stay in place, that likely means a move should be made. That’s how Badgers fans should view Howard, separate from his incident with Greg Gard from two years ago. The longer he stays in place at Michigan, the better it is for the rest of the Big Ten.

Things have gotten really bad for the Wolverines. One should wonder how bad it needs to get before change is necessary.

Warde Manuel discusses Juwan Howard, Michigan basketball future

This isn’t going to be popular. #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan basketball has been in something of a tailspin in recent months, if not the past year-plus. After winning the Big Ten and going to the Elite Eight, the Wolverines have been in decline on the hardwood, and this season has more so resembled that of Brian Ellerbe and Tommy Amaker’s tenures than that of John Beilein. It’s caused many to question whether or not favored son Juwan Howard is the right man to lead the program.

On the heels of a 29-point loss to Illinois — a team Howard has yet to beat since he arrived in June 2019 — Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel discussed the state of the basketball program after meeting with the media in an unrelated Zoom call. He says he has spoken to Howard about the state of the program in recent weeks and that he’ll continue to support the former Fab Five standout in the head coaching role.

“Juwan and I have talked, yes,” Manuel said. “And we’ll continue to have those conversations as the season goes through and I continue to support him in an effort to turn this around and win like he expects to. There’s no there’s no lack of effort from our student-athletes or coaches. And it’s a lack of execution at times and we have to be better — he knows that, they know that and expectations are high, but I will continue to have the conversations with him. And we’ll continue to support him in our program and continue to be there for him.

“It’s difficult. None of these student-athletes or coaches or staff — they’re working to win. And when it doesn’t happen, there’s no bigger disappointment than they have in the results or lack of results in the success of winning. And so they will continue to get my support and we will continue to have conversations and work through it.”

So, does that mean no changes at the top? As far as Manuel sees it, despite having lost 12 of the last 14 games, at the moment, Howard’s job appears to be safe. Whether or not that could change at season’s end remains to be seen, but at the moment, the status quo will continue.

“It would be fair to say I have not really thought about any changes in our men’s basketball program at this time,” Manuel said. “It’s one of those things that — I guess I can’t say it any clearer; I want to support Juwan to be successful and have not given any moment or thought of anything about changes at this time. And so my support is of him, of our student-athletes, and our staff.”

Michigan basketball’s next game comes on Saturday when it hosts rival Michigan State at Crisler Center at 8 p.m. EST. The Wolverines’ last game against the Spartans was an 81-62 loss in East Lansing.

Wisconsin social media reacts to Badgers’ crushing loss to last-place Michigan

Thoughts on the loss to Michigan?

Wisconsin fans are not happy after this one.

The Badgers dropped their third straight game, this one 72-68 on the road at Michigan — arguably the worst team in the Big Ten. Wisconsin in the last week has lost at Nebraska, at home against Purdue and now at Michigan. The team has gone from alone in first place in the conference to a distant third and down to a 3-seed in most bracketologies.

The loss drops Wisconsin to 16-7 on the season and 8-4 in the Big Ten. The team entered last week ranked No. 6 in the nation. It’s No. 11 this week, but that is likely to drop further.

Even worse news: The schedule doesn’t get easier on Saturday afternoon. Wisconsin will travel to Rutgers, a place that is notoriously tough to play.

It’s safe to say Wisconsin social media was unhappy after the latest loss, especially given the events of the last week and Michigan’s 7-15 record entering the contest.

How to watch Wisconsin basketball at Michigan

How to watch Wisconsin basketball at Michigan

Wisconsin basketball needs a bounce-back week in the worst way. The Badgers went 0-2 during the last 7-day stretch with tough losses at Nebraska and at home against Purdue.

The good news: the schedule now gets a bit easier and might allow for that to be possible. The bad news: the Badgers must now go on the road for three of its next for games — at Michigan, at Rutgers, vs Ohio State and at Iowa.

Greg Gard’s team gets it started tomorrow night when it visits the 7-15 (2-9 Big Ten) Michigan Wolverines — clearly the worst team in the conference.

Michigan is KenPom’s No. 101 team in the nation and has lost five consecutive games and 10 of its last 11. The program is spiraling under head coach Juwan Howard, and fast.

It’s safe to say Wisconsin needs to exit Ann Arbor with a win on Wednesday. Here is how to watch the contest:

  • Date: Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024
  • Time: 7 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. CT
  • TV Channel: Big Ten Network

Wisconsin basketball owns Michigan in two years since Juwan Howard’s slap

Wisconsin basketball owns Michigan in two years since Juwan Howard’s slap

We are nearing two full years — February 20, 2022 — since Juwan Howard and Greg Gard got into a scuffle in the postgame handshake line after the Badgers’ 77-63 win over the Wolverines, which famously led to Howard slapping Wisconsin assistant Joe Krabbenhoft, igniting a brawl.

Our thoughts on the matter have been made clear. Howard’s five-game regular-season suspension was far too light given the magnitude of the incident. The suspension should have extended into postseason play and truly been for the rest of the 2021-22 season.

Either way, Wisconsin plays at Michigan on Wednesday night. The game should tell the tale of two polar opposite teams this season — the Badgers are 16-6 (8-3 Big Ten) and in second place in a tough Big Ten race, while the Wolverines are 7-15 (2-9 Big Ten), ranked No. 101 in KenPom and are clearly the worst team in the conference.

So this led to a larger exercise. Given the two programs’ opposite trajectories at the moment, which has had the upper hand since Howard slapped Krabbenhoft?

That answer, to no surprise, is Wisconsin.

The Badgers are 40-24 since that date including this year’s stellar 16-6 record. Their worst season was 2022-23, which still ended at 20-15 and a deep run in the NIT.

The Wolverines, meanwhile, are a lowly 30-35 since the incident including a bad 18-16 season in 2022-23 and this year’s complete disaster 7-15 start. The program will miss the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and continue the steep decline since it was in the Elite Eight in 2020-21.

One may ask “But what’s their head-to-head record?” It’s just 1-1. Wisconsin won at the Kohl Center last season, but lost on the road at the Crisler Center.

So I guess Wednesday night could be viewed as the rubber match between the two programs — though it should already be decided, Wisconsin has the clear upper hand since the incident.

Michigan’s Juwan Howard suffered a historic loss to Rutgers on Saturday

Things have gone from bad to worse for Juwan Howard at Michigan

Michigan basketball is in a very bad place at the moment.

This year’s Wolverines are 7-15 overall, 2-9 in Big Ten play and 1-10 in their  last 11 games. The program is nearly certain to miss the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. It went 23-5 and made the Elite Eight in 2020-21. Then it went 19-15 in 2021-22, 18-16 in 2022-23 and now this season’s disaster.

For reference, Feb. 20, 2022 was the date Juwan Howard slapped Joe Krabbenhoft and ignited a brawl after the Badgers’ win. Wisconsin’s record since that date is 40-23. Michigan’s is 30-35

The problems reached a crescendo for Howard’s program on Saturday. The Wolverines led Rutgers by 17 points at halftime and led 47-32 with 16:54 left in the second half. The Scarlet Knights then scored 37 of the next 49 points — a 37-12 run — to win 69-59.

Howard can recruit, and he’s clearly still an important figure in Michigan basketball history. But I’m not sure how the Michigan athletic department watches this collapse from 2020-21 and doesn’t take action.

Michigan is by far the worst team in the Big Ten this season.

Everything Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard said about MSU

Gotta win this one. #GoBlue

Michigan basketball has lost three straight games after shocking Ohio State two weeks ago at Crisler Center. But the Wolverines have a tough task ahead of them as they take the show on the road to play rival Michigan State.

Though the Spartans aren’t quite as dominant as expected, they’re still quite good. And with the maize and blue coming off of one of the worst losses in recent memory in Purdue (the Wolverines lost to Iowa since, in a game in which they were favored), they need to get right. And beating the biggest rival in basketball in East Lansing would certainly help.

Michigan head coach Juwan Howard met with the media via Zoom on Monday to discuss Tuesday night’s matchup. Here is everything he had to say.
