Rockies draft LSU pitcher Justin Loer in 13th round

Justin Loer has an additional year of college eligibility if he chooses to use it.

With the 378th pick of the [autotag]2024 MLB Draft[/autotag], the [autotag]Colorado Rockies[/autotag] selected [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag], a left-handed pitcher from LSU.

Justin Loer transferred to LSU after spending two seasons at Xavier. During his time with the Musketeers, Loer had an 8-3 record with a 2.41 ERA. He made 34 appearances out of the bullpen in those two seasons. Last year for LSU, Loer had a 2-0 record and a 5.92 ERA. He struck out 30 hitters and walked 12 over 24.1 innings of work.

Loer won’t be the only former LSU player joining the Rockies pitching staff in the minor leagues. Yesterday the Rockies drafted Fidel Ulloa from LSU. They will be teammates once again if Loer decides to sign with Colorado.

Loer was just a junior for the Tigers last season so he still has a year of eligibility left if he wants to use it, though he entered the transfer portal following the season. Congratulations to Justin and his family on hearing his name was drafted in the 13th round.

LSU pitcher Justin Loer re-enters the transfer portal

Justin Loer finished with a 2-0 record and a 5.92 ERA in his lone season on the Bayou.

A pitcher who [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] landed out of the transfer portal in 2023 is tossing his name back into the portal this year. [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] is exiting the Bayou after only one season.

Loer finished with a 2-0 record and a 5.92 ERA. He pitched fewer innings this year than either of his two years at his previous school, [autotag]Xavier[/autotag]. He pitched 24.1 innings, one inning fewer than how many he pitched during his freshman season at Xavier.

He struck out 30 hitters while walking 12. Loer will be entering his senior season next year no matter where he ends up. Johnson has been very active in the portal as he has been trying to reload a roster that still has a lot of talent but fell short of Omaha this year.

I hope that Loer is successful no matter where he lands next. He is a pitcher with a lot of great tools. He just needs some more innings.

LSU baseball’s hot start leads to a win over North Carolina in regional final Game 1

LSU forced a winner-take-all game with an 8-4 win over UNC.

After beating Wofford on Sunday morning to remain alive in the Chapel Hill Regional, the Tigers got a rematch with the North Carolina Tar Heels with a chance to send it to a winner-take-all game tomorrow. LSU did exactly that with an 8-4 win.

[autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] continued the hot streak he started against Wofford as he put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer to give LSU a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, LSU tacked on another run as [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, North Carolina got their first hit of the ballgame off of [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] with a double to put a runner in scoring position. An RBI single scored him and North Carolina cut the LSU lead to 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, LSU loaded the bases before [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit an RBI single, [autotag]Stephen Milam[/autotag] hit a two-RBI single, and White scored on a groundout from Pearson to extend the lead to 7-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit a solo homer to extend the lead to 8-1.

In the top of the sixth inning, North Carolina scored a run on a passed ball to cut the lead to 8-2. After a couple of singles, Hurd was pulled from the game as [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] was called out of the bullpen. Loer walked the first hitter he faced to load the bases with two outs.

[autotag]Fidel Ulloa[/autotag] was then called from the bullpen. Ulloa struck out the next hitter on a 3-2 count to keep the score 8-2 LSU.

Hurd’s final line was 5.2 innings pitched as he allowed two runs on six strikeouts and zero walks. It was his best start since March 10th against Xavier. He came through when LSU needed him in this elimination game.

With two runners on base and one out in the top of the seventh inning, [autotag]Kade Anderson[/autotag] was called in from the bullpen. Anderson pitched against Wofford this morning but he still had enough gas in the tank to throw some more. He struck out the first batter he faced but he hit the second batter to load the bases with two outs. The Tar Heels then hit a two-RBI single to cut the lead to 8-4. The next batter hit a pop-up and we headed to the bottom of the seventh with the Tigers still up by four runs.

In the top of the ninth inning, North Carolina loaded the bases against [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] but he was able to get out of the inning unscathed as the Tigers won 8-4. The final game of the Chapel Hill Regional will be played on Monday at a time to be determined.

LSU baseball falls to North Carolina in winners’ bracket, will face elimination on Sunday

LSU will play Wofford on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT in an elimination game.

[autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] took the mound for the winner’s bracket game against North Carolina. The winner of this game advanced to the Regional final matchup and would be one win away from Omaha. North Carolina won 6-2 and sent LSU to an elimination game.

There were no early runs in this one as Holman and [autotag]Shea Sprague[/autotag] were both locked in until the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Vance Honeycutt[/autotag] hit a three-run bomb to give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] started it off with a single, [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] followed that with a single, and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a single to load the bases for [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag]. Jones then was walked on a 3-2 count to bring in the first run of the game for the Tigers. [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] then entered as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded against the new Carolina pitcher. Frey drew a walk on a 3-2 count to score another run for LSU. [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] then grounded into a double play to send us to the bottom of the seventh inning with the score 3-2 North Carolina.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Honeycutt hit another homer off of Holman, this time a solo shot, to extend the lead to 4-2 North Carolina. That homer chased Holman from the mound and [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] entered the game. Holman’s final line was 6.2 innings pitched and he allowed four runs on seven hits, 11 strikeouts, and one walk.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, North Carolina added some insurance as they tacked on two more runs to increase their lead to 6-2 as we headed to the ninth. LSU was unable to come up with any magic in the top of the ninth and the Tigers lost 6-2.

LSU will play Wofford on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT in an elimination game.

LSU baseball falls in Game 3, misses out on sweep against No. 1 Texas A&M

LSU’s hopes of a sweep against the top team in the nation were dashed by a nine-run fifth inning from the Aggies.

After LSU baseball took the first two games of the series against No. 1 Texas A&M, the Aggies rallied to take Game 3 by a score of 14-4.

LSU scored first as [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to get the Tigers out to an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit an RBI single to increase the LSU lead to 3-0.

In the top of the fifth inning, everything went south for LSU. The Aggies plated nine runs to take a 9-3 lead. Four runs were charged to [autotag]Sam Dutton[/autotag], three to [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] and two to [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag].

In the top of the ninth inning, the Aggies hit a grand slam and then a solo homer to increase their lead to 14-3. In the bottom of the ninth inning, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 14-4 but that is all LSU could get.

LSU will be back in action on Tuesday night as the Tigers take on Northwestern State. With the wins this weekend, LSU has gone from a team on the verge of not making the SEC tournament to a team that is solidly in the tournament.

LSU clinched a series win over the nation’s top team on Saturday night.

LSU beat the Texas A&M Aggies 6-4 to take a critical series in Baton Rouge in Game 2.

[autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] got the start on the mound for LSU as the Tigers looked to win a series against the No. 1 team in the country.

Texas A&M got on the board early as they plated three runs in the top of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Holman then settled into the game and both teams were unable to score until the bottom of the third inning.

In the bottom of the third, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit solo homers and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit an RBI single to tie the game 3-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch to give LSU a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Milazzo gave LSU an insurance run when he hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 5-3. White then hit another RBI single to increase the lead to 6-3 as we headed to the ninth inning.

LSU baseball dominated by Southern in midweek loss Monday night

Unfortunately, this is not an April Fools’ joke. The Southern Jaguars dominated the LSU Tigers at Alex Box Stadium on Monday night.

Unfortunately, this is not an April Fools’ joke. The Southern Jaguars dominated the LSU Tigers at Alex Box Stadium on Monday night.

Southern won the game 12-7 and LSU did not lead at any point. LSU cut the lead to 3-2 entering the fifth inning but that was as close as they could get.

[autotag]Kade Anderson[/autotag] started on the mound as the Tigers looked to bounce back against Southern after being swept by Arkansas.

In the top of the second inning, Southern got on the board first with a three-run homer against Anderson to give them a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] hit a sacrifice fly and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] had a sacrifice bunt to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, Southern did some damage against [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] and [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] as they scored five more runs to increase their lead to 8-2. In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] had an RBI groundout and [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 8-5.

In the top of the sixth, an LSU error led to another run for Southern as they increased their lead to 9-5. In the bottom of the sixth, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 9-6.

In the bottom of the eighth, Jared Jones hit a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 9-7. In the top of the ninth, [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] committed his second error of the evening leading to another run for Southern. A fielder’s choice and another error led to more runs for Southern as they increased their lead to 12-7.

LSU will host No. 6 Vanderbilt this weekend. Game 1 of the series is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. CT.

Instant Analysis: Mississippi State shows LSU the error of its ways in series-opening loss on Friday

Luke Holman entered the first game of this series with a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. After Friday, that is no longer the case.

Conference play did not start the way LSU wanted it to as the Tigers lost Game 1 to Mississippi State 10-4.

[autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] entered the first game of this series with a 2-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. After tonight, that is no longer the case. State scored first in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead early.

LSU then took the lead in the top of the third inning when [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit a solo homer and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a two-run shot to right to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the wheels fell off for the Tigers. The Bulldogs scored three runs, two of which were unearned, to give themselves a 4-3 lead and chase Holman from the mound. Holman’s final line was 4.2 innings pitched and he gave up 10 hits, five runs (two earned), three strikeouts, and one walk.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, State scored again on an RBI single. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Bulldogs hit a three-run homer against [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] to extend their lead to 9-3 and an RBI single extended the lead to 10-3.

In the top of the ninth inning, [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] scored on an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 10-4. That was all LSU could manage and that was the final score. Game 2 will be Saturday at 4 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball’s Friday night game vs. Xavier delayed

Game 1 of the LSU vs. Xavier series will not start until 8 p.m. CT due to weather.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU baseball team are scheduled to play a three-game series against the [autotag]Xavier Musketeers[/autotag]. Game one was slated to start at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday evening but it has now been delayed.

Game 1 of the LSU vs Xavier series will not start until 8 p.m. CT due to weather. Xavier will enter this game with a 7-6 record. [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] will get the start in Game 1, but he is not the pitcher I want to focus on for this series.

[autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] is the guy I want to talk about for this series. Loer spent his last two seasons in the NCAA playing for the Musketeers and garnering an overall 8-3 record with a 2.43 ERA and seven saves over that stretch. Xavier is where Loer cut his teeth and learned even more about how to be a great pitcher.

Now, Loer is at LSU and has a chance at a national championship, but he may have never gotten the chance to play for the Tigers if not for Xavier.

Little change for LSU in On3’s updated SEC baseball power rankings despite 3-0 showing in Houston

The Tigers are coming off an impressive weekend, but it wasn’t enough to see some movement in the rankings this week.

The Tigers are coming off an impressive 4-0 week that featured a true road victory over Rice followed by a 3-0 showing at the Astros Foundation Classic in Minute Maid Park, which was headlined by a win over No. 14-ranked Texas.

While that puts the Tigers at 11-1 to begin their national title defense campaign, it’s not enough to see movement in On3’s SEC power rankings from Jonathan Wagner this week.

He’s keeping LSU in the No. 2 spot behind Arkansas, which is coming off a 4-0 week of its own but sits at 9-2 on the season. Here’s Wagner’s rundown of where the Tigers stand in the conference picture.

LSU has been impressive early on, but this past weekend especially. After a 16-4 road win at Rice last Wednesday, the Tigers faced off against Texas, Louisiana and Texas State in the Astros Foundation Classic and picked up three quality victories along the way. LSU showed that their early success hasn’t just been a result of a light early-year schedule.

The Tigers passed their first major test of the season this past weekend, and now they’ll prepare for their final weekend before conference play. Xavier comes to town as [autotag]Justin Loer[/autotag] could face his former team, but first, the Tigers hit the road Wednesday night for a showdown against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond.
