Should the Steelers trade Russell Wilson before the deadline?

ESPN speculates that Steelers QB Russell Wilson could be on the move.

The NFL trade deadline is less than a month away and the Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the teams who could be buyers or sellers. Pittsburgh has been connected to Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams but Pittsburgh might have a perfect player to trade for Adams or to another team.

ESPN’s insiders speculated on quarterbacks who could be on the move and they mentioned Pittsburgh quarterback Russell Wilson as a veteran who the Steelers could trade after the emergence of Justin Fields in Wilson’s absence.

All good suggestions, but I’m curious about the last passer you mentioned. I was in Pittsburgh for Sunday’s game against Dallas, and talking to people there I definitely did not get the sense Justin Fields was on thin ice or that the coaching staff was looking for a reason to turn it over to Wilson. Sunday wasn’t Fields’ best game, but he did lead the Steelers back in the second half and they were seconds away from winning. I’m not sure how Wilson improves anything there unless all of a sudden the running backs and the
offensive line are all healthy and they bring in two new wide receivers.
At least Fields offers running ability, and the coaches and players I’ve talked to there had nothing but positive things to say about him. So, it’s interesting to see what coach Mike Tomlin does on this, but I’m sticking with my prediction that Wilson never plays for the Steelers unless Fields gets hurt. It’s also worth remembering Wilson’s one-year, minimum salary contract includes a no-trade clause. It’s possible this ends with him getting released, not traded.

Cast your vote and tell us if you think the Steelers will trade Wilson, or maybe even Fields before the trade deadline.

Steelers insider believes Russell Wilson’s takeover is imminent

Steelers insider Gerry Dulac argues why Russell Wilson will more than likely get the starting nod at quarterback in the near future.

Everyone can agree that Pittsburgh’s offense is simply not good right now. The issue with the offense is what fans consider debatable, as some argue the blame should lie with Justin Fields, while others argue it is the lack of playmakers in the wide receiver room. Fields has shown flashes of greatness, but he has also shown a tendency to fumble the football, while also showcasing his poor decision-making.

Steelers insider and reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Gerry Dulac, wrote an article that highlighted the inevitability of Russell Wilson getting his shot to start for the offense.

Dulac stated: “The Steelers wanted a quarterback the other team would fear when the game is on the line, the way Tomlin feared what might happen against Prescott. Which is why, at some point soon, Tomlin will make the decision to switch to Wilson”.

It is hard to argue that Wilson isn’t far more reliable to win games, and it is also difficult to make the case to continue to ride the hot hand of Fields, who at this point has grown cold.

NFL analyst rips Steelers’ passing attack: ‘Shouldn’t be this hard’

Analyst Brian Baldinger, known for his NFL breakdown videos, touches on the overall frustrations behind Pittsburgh’s awful passing attack.

NFL analyst Brian Baldinger, creator of the popular Baldy’s Breakdowns videos, where he analyzes key plays from some of the best players in the league, told social media the painstakingly obvious on Monday afternoon: the Steelers’ offense is terrible. Typically highlighting what great players do right, Baldinger chose specific plays to illustrate where the Pittsburgh passing attack went wrong.

On one key play, Justin Fields eyed a wide-open George Pickens running horizontally across the field, but the QB’s poor decision-making allowed the defensive back to make up the lost ground before he even attempted to throw the football.

While much of the offense is under scrutiny, Baldinger highlighted that perhaps the best play of the night for the Steelers’ offense was made by none other than backup QB Kyle Allen, who hit TE Pat Freiermuth for 18 yards.

Analysts and fans cannot make the tough decisions for Mike Tomlin and the rest of the Steelers organization. With Russell Wilson beginning to practice in full, Tomlin needs to consider the idea of starting the veteran QB in hopes of giving life to this awful offense.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin gives perfect 3-word description of quarterback situation

Mike Tomlin is leaving the door ajar for Russell Wilson to start at quarterback this week vs the Raiders.

Last week the Pittsburgh Steelers got a disappointing performance out of quarterback Justin Fields against the Dallas Cowboys. This, combined with the continuing improvement in health of quarterback Russell Wilson and the Steelers have themselves a good old fashioned quarterback controversy.

When head coach Mike Tomlin talked to the media on Tuesday, he didn’t do anything to diffuse the drama or offer any sort of clarity on the situation.

According to Tomlin, the “door is ajar” for Wilson this week as he continues to work his way back from the calf strain that seems to never want to go away.

The Steelers are currently on a two-game losing streak so this would be the perfect chance to get Wilson into the lineup assuming he is 100 percent. With this offense and the play of this offensive line, Wilson is going to need to be willing and able to use his legs to keep drives alive.

Who should start at QB for the Steelers vs the Raiders?

Cast your vote and tell us who you think the Steelers should start at quarterback this weekend.

It would appear the Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders both have questions about the quarterback position heading into the showdown this week. The Raiders benched Gardner Minshew last week in favor of Aidan O’Connell last week to no avail.

The Steelers, on the other hand have Justin Fields in place. However, after losing his last two starts and Russell Wilson getting back to full health, the team might opt to make a change to try to reverse their fortunes.

Fields played his best game of the season on a loss in Week Four but last week against the Dallas Cowboys, Fields struggled to move the football at all. This left the door wide open for head coach Mike Tomlin to justify a change at quarterback.

Cast your vote and let us know who you think should start at quarterback this week against the Raiders. For us, we are sticking with Fields. There are just too many problems at other positions on offense to think a quarterback change will fix things.

Analyst believes the fix to the offense is WR, not QB Russell Wilson

Fans clamor for Russell Wilson’s return to starting duties, NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky states that WR is the fix for the offense, not QB.

The offense stepped through a proverbial time machine against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Gone were the spectacular performances the unit showcased in Weeks 3 and 4, replaced by the anemic, low-scoring offensive game plan from Weeks 1 and 2.

Speaking on ESPN’s Get Up, NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky seemed to hit the nail right on the head: Pittsburgh has a big problem—an offensive problem. However, Orlovsky believes benching Justin Fields is the wrong decision to make.

https://twitter.com/GetUpESPN/status/1843273535344501168

The fix that Orlovsky speaks of is a rather simple one, but it’s being made complicated by Mike Tomlin. Rookie WR Roman Wilson has practiced in full the past two weeks but continues to be designated inactive when game time rolls around. Tomlin, in response to Wilson’s inactive designation, stated “It’s difficult to get on a moving train,” but it’s clearly a loyalty issue.

If an NFL analyst noticed it, maybe Tomlin has too. Van Jefferson is not the number two guy in this offense, and Calvin Austin hasn’t proven it either. It’s time to get Roman Wilson a helmet.

TV broadcast hints at new Steelers starter next week

Have the Steelers already decided to bench Justin Fields?

Sunday night’s performance by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields did nothing but muddy the waters about who should be the starting quarterback next week versus the Las Vegas Raiders. Fields made some big plays but ultimately couldn’t consistently move the football and with Russell Wilson waiting in the wings, every rep is crucial.

During the television broadcast, it really sounded like the Steelers are prepared to put Wilson into the starting lineup next week. They discussed the situation with Wilson and with head coach Mike Tomlin and it certainly sounded like this week would be the week when Wilson would be ready and the team could decide to sit Fields down after leading the team to a 3-2 record to start the season.

If the Steelers wanted to make a change at quarterback, now is the time. Pittsburgh is on a two-game losing streak and could use a spark on offense. Will that be enough for the team to make a change?

Steelers fans react: Pleas for Russell Wilson to take over as starter

The Pittsburgh Steelers have suffered their second-straight loss, and fans want Justin Fields substituted out with Russell Wilson as the QB.

After failing to help the Pittsburgh Steelers maintain their unbeaten record in Week 4 and doing almost nothing to contribute to the Steelers’ efforts in Week 5, Justin Fields’ time as the starting quarterback may be finished.  Fields doesn’t seem comfortable in the pocket or in Pittsburgh’s offense overall.

Everyone was fine with Fields remaining the starting quarterback after three straight wins to start the season, but after two consecutive losses, where Fields’ fumbles, decision-making, and overall accuracy are costing the team games, it may be time for a change at quarterback.

Russell Wilson has been the topic of conversation these past few weeks. There have been some rumors and theories regarding his overall health, but with Fields struggling to win the team games, Wilson may be the last hope of the ‘Steel City.’ Fans appear to feel the same way, with many taking to social media to not only voice their disappointment over the Week 5 loss but also to plead their case for the Steelers to start Wilson moving forward.  Here are some of their reactions on social media:

Did Justin Fields give away the keys to the kingdom in Week 5?

Through five weeks of football, Fields has looked subpar through more than half of the games he’s played in. Is it time for a QB change?

Justin Fields did his best Groundhog Day impression and reverted back to his Week 1 self. Do not let his two touchdowns fool you—Fields did almost nothing to put his team in a position to win this game, but he sure did a lot to cost them the victory.

Several plays throughout the game made Steelers fans ask themselves, ‘This is the quarterback who beat out Russell Wilson? Yikes!’

Fields was very lucky his stats didn’t get any worse, as at least three of his throws went straight to the defense’s hands or right into double coverage, but the Cowboys’ defensive backs dropped every potential turnover.

He was incredibly inaccurate throughout the contest, forcing several of his tight ends and wide receivers to dive for his overthrown passes, such as wide-open Connor Heyward early in the game.

After throwing for his second-worst passer rating of the season, Mike Tomlin must bench Fields and stop playing this game of ‘injury chicken’—start Russell Wilson and let the former Super Bowl XLVIII champion cook.

Steelers lose heartbreaker to Cowboys on 4th-down TD pass in final minute

The Steelers defense got carved up by the Cowboys on Sunday night.

This story was updated because an earlier version included an inaccurate headline.

After weather delayed kickoff by about 90 minutes, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys squared off on Sunday night in a battle of two of the most popular teams in the league. The Cowboys dominated in the boxscore, but the Steelers held on to a lead heading into the final few minutes. But on fourth-and-goal, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott connected with wide receiver Jalen Tolbert to pull off the 20-17 win.

This loss drops the Steelers to 3-2 on the season and puts them in a tie for the top spot in the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens.

Offensively, the Steelers struggled to find consistency on the ground, which hindered any opportunity for quarterback Justin Fields to get into a rhythm in the passing game.

Defensively, the Steelers were scorched by Prescott to the tune of 352 yards passing. The Steelers lost edge rusher Nick Herbig in the first half and failed to generate any sort of pass rush other than from T.J. Watt, allowing Prescott to march down the field for the game-winning score.

But the Steelers almost secured victory moments before the pass to Tolbert. On second-and-goal from the 1, Elandon Roberts flew over the line of scrimmage and torpedoed running back Rico Dowdle. The ball popped out and lay on the turf, and for a brief moment it appeared a Steeler would fall on it and end the game. But Prescott alertly dived on it.

The Steelers have lost two in a row and now have to prepare for a long road trip out west next week against the Las Vegas Raiders.
