The co-headliner saw [autotag]Zhang Weili[/autotag] (23-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC) begin a second reign as women’s strawweight champion when she submitted [autotag]Carla Esparza[/autotag] (19-7 MMA, 10-5 UFC) with a choke in the second round.

UFC 281: Julio Arce says he has unfinished business in the Garden going after trifecta win

Julio Arce has a boxing win at Madison Square Garden and a kickboxing win there – but not yet an MMA win. He wants the trifecta at UFC 281.

NEW YORK – [autotag]Julio Arce[/autotag] met the media Wednesday ahead of his fight at UFC 281.

Arce (18-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) takes on Montel Jackson (11-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in a bantamweight fight on the ESPN+ preliminary card at Madison Square Garden in New York. At the event’s media day in Manhattan, Arce took questions from media members before his matchup.

Arce has alternated wins and losses for seven fights. He’ll be looking for his winning streak since 2018 when he meets Jackson on the heels of a decision victory over Daniel Santos in April.

He said he has unfinished business at Madison Square Garden. He has a boxing win at MSG and a kickboxing win in the Garden – but not yet an MMA win. He wants the trifecta. “This is the mecca,” he said. “This is where some of the major biggest fights in the world happen.”

Julio Arce confident future at bantamweight, says recent weight miss was ‘small miscalculation’

Julio Arce is confident his UFC future is at bantamweight despite missing weight for his most recent outing in April.

[autotag]Julio Arce[/autotag] is not going anywhere.

The former Ring of Combat two-division champion assures he’s here to stay in the UFC’s bantamweight division, despite not making weight for his most recent fight.

Arce (18-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC), who returns Saturday at UFC 281 against Montel Jackson (11-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC), failed to make the bantamweight limit of 136 pounds for his fight against Daniel Santos at UFC 273 in April.

The decision win over Santos was Arce’s third fight since he dropped from featherweight to 135 pounds. The 33-year-old said it was a mishap that won’t happen again.

“That was my fault, but it was just a small miscalculation,” Arce told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “We just ran out of time. I had 0.5 pounds left, and I was still sweating, but if I don’t get to weigh-ins on time, then I can’t fight. So yeah, I just ran out of time.

“Now we’ve corrected the details that we needed to correct. Look, the first two fights at bantamweight I made 135 pounds. This last one was just a technical mistake. And I felt bad because regardless, I missed weight. But at least it wasn’t by that much. There are others who miss weight by three, four, five pounds. I did the best I could, but I just ran out of time.”

[lawrence-related id=2594903,2594697]

Arce has been competing in the UFC since 2018. He’s proud to fight under the Las Vegas-based promotion, but his dreams don’t stop there. Arce is determined to be a UFC champion, and his drop to bantamweight is key in those plans.

“That’s the weight class I needed to return to,” Arce said. “When I was fighting at 145, you could see my opponents were clearly bigger than me, and you could also see the weight class that I needed to be in. So I decided to return to 135 because I do have aspirations of fighting for a title, so it needed to be in this division.”

UFC Fight Night 197 Yadong vs. Arce: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Yadong (17-5-1) | Arce (17-4-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

YADONG (-140) is the play, as he has just been a lot more consistent since arriving in the UFC. He is 6-1-1 with four decisions, going 3-1 when the judges get involved. He also has two KO/TKO wins and a submission victory.

Arce has been inconsistent lately, although he has knockout power and Yadong will have to be careful of the big shot.

Over/Under (O/U)

YES (-180): FIGHT TO GO THE DISTANCE is a little pricey, but not terribly out of line. Yadong has needed the judges to decide his feat in each of his last four outings, while Arce has had two decisions in his last four.

As such, play YADONG ON POINTS (+130) for a good value.

The UFC is back home in Las Vegas this week with a former champion at the top of the lineup.

UFC Fight Night 197 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, former featherweight champion [autotag]Max Holloway[/autotag] (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Yair Rodriguez[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC), who is fighting for the first time in more than two years. Holloway is a huge -800 favorite at Tipico; the comeback on Rodriguez is +470. Given those odds, it’s not surprising that not a single one of our 13 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers is picking against Holloway.

In the co-feature, [autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag] (18-7-1 MMA, 7-5 UFC) meets [autotag]Ben Rothwell[/autotag] (39-13 MMA, 9-7 UFC) at heavyweight. And though Rothwell only is a -165 favorite, he’s got the support of 11 of our 13 staff members.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Leah Letson[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on former Invicta champion and former UFC women’s featherweight title challenger [autotag]Felicia Spencer[/autotag] (8-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC). Spencer is a big -320 favorite, and she’s our other unanimous pick.

[autotag]Miguel Baeza[/autotag] (10-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) may be just a -150 favorite at welterweight against [autotag]Khaos Williams[/autotag] (12-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC), but he’s got a near-unanimous picks lead at 12-1.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] (17-5-1 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) is a slim -140 favorite at featherweight against [autotag]Julio Arce[/autotag] (17-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC). Yadong has most of our backing – he’s an 11-2 pick.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Holloway (88 percent), Rothwell (72 percent), Spencer (86 percent), Baeza (51 percent) and Yadong (81 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.
