The Athletic is reporting that Juco football will move to the spring

The Athletic is reporting that the NJCAA is close to moving football to the spring. They would be the first league to do so.

In the ever-changing COVID-19 situation there have been reports of leagues cancelling football like the Ivy League. The Big Ten and PAC 12 conferences have decided to cancel all non-conference games. We await the announcements from the ACC, Big 12 and SEC to follow suit. At least that is the current expectation.

What about the Junior College circuit? How are they handling fall sports, specifically football? According to Max Olson of the Athletic, Juco football will be played in the spring*.

The National Junior College Athletic Association is expected to announce Monday that it will move to a spring football season, two head coaches told The Athletic. Teams would play up to eight games with preseason practices beginning on March 1 and the regular season beginning at the end of March and extending through the end of May.

The NJCAA is the first college league to move their football season to the spring officially.

“We would like to play football this fall,” Parker said. “But I think from a national perspective, moving it is probably the right decision holistically.”

This is unfamiliar territory on the college recruiting front. As Max Olson mentions in his article, schools will have to make decisions on players they won’t even play this upcoming year. Almost a blind decision for major universities. The Longhorns are no strangers to Juco recruiting but this will be new for all parties involved.

Tyler Junior College head coach Thomas Rocco mentioned trying to have a few scrimmages in the fall. That would put some of these players on film and help the major colleges make decisions.

Richard Glasper (1976-78) – Guard

Richard Glasper was a great guard on a very mediocre Florida squad in the mid-to-late 70s known for his elite vertical leap and quick hands.

Perhaps one of the greatest JUCO transfers in program history, he played in Gainesville for two seasons averaging double digits in points both years while setting a still-standing school career record for steals per game (1.83). He earned All-SEC honors in 1978 when he led the team in both steals and assists and his career average of 4.26 assists a game still stands as second-best in school history.

During the 1976-77 season, Glasper averaged 11.9 points per game making 53.5 percent of his shots, along with 2.1 rebounds; the following year, he averaged 13 points on 48.5 percent shooting from the field, along with 3.1 rebounds.

Despite Glasper’s innate athletic ability, his 6-foot frame limited his prospects in the professional ranks and he went undrafted after leaving school, never playing in the NBA.

Alex Grinch’s front seven continues to build.

Class of 2020 JUCO defensive tackle Joshua Ellison just committed to Oklahoma and will sign with the Sooners on Wednesday.

Ellison was a four-star recruit in the 2019 class and was verbally committed to Texas A&M before heading to Blinn Community College in Brenham, Texas.

The College Station native stands 6-foot-3 and 285 pounds. Ellison chose Oklahoma over Texas A&M and Texas Tech, his only offers coming out of Blinn CC.

In high school, Ellison had offers from Baylor, Kansas, Tennessee and Indiana among others. He was the No. 25 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 52 overall player in the state of Texas in his high school recruiting class according to Rivals last year.

Ellison joins four-stars Perrion Winfrey, Reggie Grimes and three-star Noah Arinze on the Sooners’ 2020 defensive line recruiting class.

Oklahoma was the No. 11 recruiting class in 2020 prior to Ellison’s class, according to Rivals.
