UFC alum Juan Adams embracing dual professional life as BKFC fighter, science teacher

Former UFC fighter-turned-science-teacher Juan Adams doesn’t conceptualize steps forward and backward – just a winding journey to the top.

[autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] fought in UFC and will debut in another major promotion Saturday at a BKFC Prospects event.

But it’s never been about the promotional banners for Adams, who’s tried to fight as much as possible in recent years despite also juggling a gig as an eighth grade science teacher.

Adams, now 32, was released from the UFC in February 2020 on a three-fight skid that included losses to Arjan Bhullar, Greg Hardy, and Justin Tafa. He’s gone 5-3 since, including a 1-1 record in PFL and a brief stint as Fury FC heavyweight champion.

Big events are cool and represent success, but the pursuit of self-betterment remains Adams’ driving factor. In his mind, simply put: it’s about having fun. That’s the void that BKFC filled recently.

“It’s been too long,” Adams recently told MMA Junkie. “I was trying to get in jiu-jitsu tournaments. I was pretty much trying to accept fights against whoever would fight me. Nobody wanted to really step up. I was going to fight with Fury. The plan was to fight Robelis Despaigne in January, but he signed with the UFC. … That put me in the position where I just really needed a fight.

“Bareknuckle had the tryout, so I went to it. My thing is that I just love to fight. I don’t care what type of combat sport it is, as long as I’m getting to compete. I wanted to compete. I went to the tryouts. They said they had this series coming up, so I figured I’d do it and give it a shot. I did. I’m super excited about it.”

Like many fighters who fall on hard times in terms of wins and losses, Adams experienced criticism and doubt from the fanbase. His stalwart self-belief continues to push him forward, though.

“For every negative thing about me, there’s a lot more positive,” Adams said. “I guarantee these people talking crap online can’t do anything about it, but that’s kind of the society we live in. Everyone wants to be a critic. Everyone has the ability to go into a platform, surround themselves with a bunch of yes-people and live in an echo chamber. That’s cool. If that’s where you’re at in life and that’s your level of awareness, go for it. But I’ll tell you straight-up you’re never going to amount to anything doing that. That’s OK. There’s a reason you’re watching and I’m doing. If people can’t understand that, if you don’t have the balls to put your money where your mouth is and you don’t have the ability to go in there to do it, who are you to criticize us?”

Adams will fight fellow bareknuckle debutant Matt Adams on Saturday at BKFC Prospects Fight Night in Albuquerque, N.M. Win or lose, Adams isn’t sure about where the performance will land him, but an MMA return is likely sooner or later.

“(The UFC) is definitely somewhere I’m hungry to get back to,” Adams said. “It’s just that there seems to be no interest in me from them. They told me to go out and win a couple fights. I had five finishes on the local circuit. I lost a fight to Austin Lane and he’s in the UFC now. I was winning that fight the entire time. The canvas was super wet. I slipped and the ref stopped it. … That’s kind of one of those things where I know I’m right there. … As long as I don’t allow things to cloud my focus, I feel like I’m one of the best in the world.

“… If it never comes again, I’m at peace with that. I would like for it to happen again, at least go back there and even out my record with that promotion. I don’t like leaving things on bad terms. I really don’t like leaving on a loss. But if that’s the only option I’m given, I can’t dwell on it. I’m not going to allow it to eat me up. It does suck. Am I hungry for it? Yes.”

Adams doesn’t intend to stop fighting any time soon. When that day comes, however, Adams hopes to have himself set financially and professionally. He currently teaches eighth grade science and plans to get a teaching certification soon.

“A lot of people will look at me and think I got to where I was just because I’m an athlete or because I had a big body or whatever. That’s not really the case,” Adams said. “The reality is that I would’ve never found wrestling if I hadn’t gone to this school that I went to for high school. I went to that school because I was smart. I got a really good score on an entrance exam. I got a scholarship to a college prep school. There was this wrestling sport that I had never seen before that kind of looked like fighting.

“… The easiest way I can break it down is that nobody likes stupid people. Nobody likes being around them. Stupid people are there. They either entertain you or irritate you. Whatever side you fall on, who am I to criticize someone for being stupid? All I can do is try to educate them, try to help them be better. It’s a way for me to walk my talk. It’s a way for me to really embody the change I want to see in the world. I feel if more people were educated, we wouldn’t have the problems we have today.”

The PFL is back for the second of three sets of playoff semifinals. This week, welterweights and heavyweights are on the docket.

The 2022 PFL Playoffs 2 event takes place Saturday at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+ and ahead of post-lim qualifiers on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, No. 1 welterweight seed and former Bellator champion [autotag]Rory MacDonald[/autotag] (23-9-1) meets late replacement [autotag]Dilano Taylor[/autotag] (9-2). Taylor stepped in for Magomed Umalatov on Thursday after Umalatov had visa issues. MacDonald is -205 at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Taylor is +155. All but one of our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are siding with MacDonald to move on to the final.

At heavyweight, No. 2 [autotag]Ante Delija[/autotag] (21-5) takes on No. 3 [autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] (9-3). It’s a pick’em fight at the betting window, and it’s close with our staff members, as well. Delija has the slimmest possible 6-5 lead in the picks.

In the other heavyweight semifinal, [autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] (10-4) stepped in Thursday as a late replacement for No. 1 seed Denis Goltsov. He’ll take on [autotag]Matheus Scheffel[/autotag] (16-8), who himself was an alternate. Adams is a big -250 favorite, despite his late notice, but it’s Scheffel with a 6-5 narrow edge from our staff members.

And in the second welterweight semifinal on the main card, No. 2 seed [autotag]Sadibou Sy[/autotag] (11-6-2) takes on [autotag]Carlos Leal[/autotag] (17-3). Sy is a slim favorite at -120, but Leal has a major lead in the picks at 9-2.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, MacDonald (76 percent), Ferreira (52 percent), Adams (51 percent) and Leal (67 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.

2022 PFL 5 results: UFC veteran Juan Adams TKOs Sam Kei but misses playoffs

Juan Adams made a splash in his PFL debut Friday when he rallied to finish Sam Kei.

[autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] made a splash in his PFL debut Friday when he rallied to finish Sam Kei.

Adams (10-4), who joined the the heavyweight season as a replacement fighter, picked up five points in the standings at 2022 PFL 5 with a second-round TKO of Kei (8-6) at Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta.

It was a back-and-forth fight before Adams climbed into mount and got the stoppage with short punches. Despite the performance, Adams falls short of a playoff berth because he did not win fast enough climb into the top four of the standings.

Nevertheless, it’s a solid win on his record. Check out the replay of the stoppage blow (via Twitter):

After parting ways with the UFC on a three-fight losing skid in February 2020, Adams has thrived outside the octagon. He’s 5-1 in his past six fights, and his effort in his PFL debut might be enough to receive an invite into the 2023 season.

Ex-UFC heavyweight Juan Adams announces signing with PFL as alternate

It might be a long shot but if things break his way, Juan Adams could be a millionaire before the end of the year.

It might be a long shot but if things break his way, [autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] could be a millionaire before the end of the year.

Adams, a former UFC fighter, announced on Wednesday that he’s signed with the PFL as a heavyweight alternate. He’ll need someone to withdraw in order to fight and have a chance at earning points for a playoff spot where he could compete for the $1 million grand prize.

“Just signed to contract for (PFL),” Adams wrote on Facebook. “I will be an alternate meaning that if anyone can’t fight for whatever reason, I get my shot. I weigh in June 23 either way in Atlanta.”

2022 PFL 5 will play host to the second heavyweight fights of the season June 24 at Overtime Elite Arena in Atlanta.

Adams, 30, earned a spot on the UFC roster through Dana White’s Contender Series in July 2018. He went 1-3 in four promotional appearances, winning his debut by third-round TKO against Chris de la Rocha before dropping three straight to Arjan Bhullar, Greg Hardy and Justin Tafa.

Since being released by the UFC in February 2020, Adams has gone 4-1 under the Fury FC banner. He finished Aaron Rosa by first-round TKO in his most recent fight this past February at Fury FC 56.

Josh Parisian wants to welcome Juan Adams to ARES FC: ‘I don’t care for him that much’

Josh Parisian sees Juan Adams as a good opportunity to prove he belongs in the big leagues.

[autotag]Josh Parisian[/autotag] sees [autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] as a good opportunity to prove he belongs in the big leagues.

Parisan (12-3 MMA) had numerous opportunities that could have led to the UFC, but they never materialized. He scored a spinning backfist knockout over Greg Rebello at Dana White’s Contender Series in 2018, but wasn’t awarded a contract.

He then took part in Season 28 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” but lost his first fight to Michel Batista. Since then, Parisian has gone 5-1, with all five wins coming by finish.

He signed with ARES and scored a second-round finish over Matunga Djikasa in his promotional debut this past December.

Parisian has been on a mission to get a call from the UFC, and he thinks that a fight with the recently signed Adams may help him get one step closer to achieving that.

“At this point, I want the hardest fights that I can get, that will get me where I want to go,” Parisian told MMA Junkie. “I’ve been fighting guys with winning records. My last fight wasn’t (an opponent with) a winning record, but I had a fight lined up with a dude with a good record. At this point, maybe just because I’m having a daughter, I’m like, ‘I’ve got to make something happen.’ So if I’m going to the UFC, who do you want me to fight? Who are you looking to sign right now, and I will beat his ass so you can see that I’m there. I’m ready.

“I did see that Juan Adams was cut from the UFC, and I don’t care for him that much simply because when I was going on the show, he was running his mouth on Twitter. When I was on the show, we got to watch the Contenders (Series), and I didn’t like his arrogance. Although he’s been served some humble pie in the UFC, I would like that fight with ARES.”

The coronavirus outbreak has postponed ARES FC 2, which is now projected to take place in October, giving matchmakers plenty of time to potentially match these two heavyweights up.
