Giants injury report: Drew Lock, Jon Runyan likely out vs. Ravens

The New York Giants listed nearly 20 players on their Wednesday injury report, including QB Drew Lock and OL Jon Runyan Jr.

The New York Giants returned to practice on Wednesday afternoon in preparation for a Week 15 game against the Baltimore Ravens at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Before taking the field, head coach Brian Daboll stepped up to the podium and spoke with reporters.

Most of what Daboll revealed was not anything considered positive news, beginning with quarterback Drew Lock, who is in a walking boot and unlikely to play on Sunday.

“I wouldn’t say he’s doing great. He’s in a boot,” Daboll said. “He has a heel. He won’t practice today. He won’t be out on a practice field today. Can’t tell you if he’d be ready to go right now. So, Tommy (DeVito) will get all the reps.

“Can’t see him going tomorrow. Hopefully Friday we can see whether or not he can end up being a two or a three. But, not there yet as of today.”

Additionally, guard Jon Runyan Jr. is also expected to miss the Ravens game but there is at least some optimism that left tackle Jermaine Eluemunor could return.

“Jermaine, he’s made good progress,” Daboll said. “Probably more optimistic with Jermaine.”

If there was a sliver of good news, it’s that cornerback Deonte Banks returned to practice on a limited basis.

Giants injury report: Tyrone Tracy Jr. advances in concussion protocol

New York Giants RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. advanced in concussion protocol and has a chance to play against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

The New York Giants took the field on Thursday for their second of three practices ahead of a Week 9 game against the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium.

Beforehand, head coach Brian Daboll delivered a positive injury update, revealing that all but two players — punter Jamie Gillan and wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton — would return to practice.

Daboll also stated that rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. advanced in concussion protocol and would wear the red non-contact jersey.

“Trending in the right direction,” Daboll said.

In further good news, Daboll said there’s a strong chance veteran cornerback Adoree’ Jackson returns for Sunday’s game against Washington barring a setback.

“Good to go,” he said of Jackson

Giants injury report: Tyrone Tracy Jr. in concussion protocol

New York Giants rookie RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. is in the “early stages” of concussion protocol and may not be available in Week 9 vs. Washington.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday afternoon in preparation for a Week 9 game against the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

On short rest, the Giants had a lengthy injury report with several veterans and stars sitting out, including nose tackle Dexter Lawrence and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.

Head coach Brian Daboll revealed that Tracy, who left Monday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, was in the “early stages” of concussion protocol. He is 50-50 to play against the Commanders.

Lawrence, who has been battling a hip injury for most of the season, was given a veteran rest day.

Meanwhile, offensive tackle Joshua Ezeudu had his knee drained and missed practice, paving the way for veteran Chris Hubbard to start at left tackle for the second consecutive week.

Giants’ Brian Daboll won’t commit to Joshua Ezeudu in Week 8

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll would not say whether Joshua Ezeudu will continue as the team’s starting left tackle.

The New York Giants are still working through the loss of All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas for the season.

Their first pass was to place third-year lineman Joshua Ezeudu, a former third-round pick out of North Carolina who is known for his versatility, at left tackle which is not his strongest position.

On Monday, head coach Brian Daboll would not totally commit to Ezeudu, who settled down in the game after a rough start, in Week 8.

Ezeudu played all 58 offensive snaps in Sunday’s loss. He had an 82.1% pass block win rate, 36th of 49 tackles this week. He had a 73.3% run block win rate. That’s 39th of 63 qualifiers, per ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

“Yeah, we’ll have that discussion here,” Daboll said. “We’ve watched the tape. We’re not there yet. I thought that early on there was a couple plays in there. One off of a jam and another one that could have been better.

“I think he settled in. It was his first time playing. So, there’s some things he did better as the game went on and made some improvements. And we’ll see where we’re at here.”

The Giants’ next game is against the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road on Monday night. That means facing a pass rush led by T.J. Watt.

Many thought the Giants would slide right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor to left tackle and insert Evan Neal in on the right side. That plan appeared to be low on Daboll’s list indicating their continuing lack of confidence in Neal.

The Giants could very well move off of Ezeudu but based on his play in the second half of Sunday’s game, he could very well be getting settled in.

Brian Daboll: Giants could ‘potentially’ sign veteran tackle

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll says a veteran offensive tackle could “potentially” be signed to replace Andrew Thomas (foot).

With the loss of left tackle Andrew Thomas for the season, the New York Giants are looking for options to replace him. As of right now, Giants plan to start Joshua Ezeudu at left tackle over Evan Neal, who continues to practice at right tackle. Neal is an option to switch to the left, but that seems highly unlikely.

As Ezeudu and Neal aren’t fabulous options at left tackle, Giants head coach Brian Daboll revealed on Thursday that they could potentially sign a veteran tackle to replace Thomas.

The adjustments made to the offensive line this offseason are now out the window. Quarterback Daniel Jones has been far better protected this season than any Giants’ quarterback in 2023 but losing Thomas for the season is crushing.

Daboll did not say if any players have been brought in to work out at the left tackle position, but if they plan on signing someone, that news is likely to follow sooner rather than later.

Giants’ Evan Neal ready to play left tackle if called upon

New York Giants third-year offensive tackle Evan Neal says he’s open to playing left tackle in Andrew Thomas’ absence.

The New York Giants are in the unenviable position of replacing left tackle Andrew Thomas, who is now out for the remainder of the 2024 season with a foot injury.

The plan, according to head coach Brian Daboll, is to insert third-year lineman Joshua Ezeudu into the role and see how he does in practice this week.

If Ezeudu works out, the problem will be solved (for now). But if he doesn’t, well… a different plan will rolled out.

“Well, you can’t replace an Andrew Thomas,” Daboll told reporters. “We’ve had six weeks here in the regular season where Evan (Neal) has taken, I’d say, the majority of right tackle snaps in case something happened to Jermaine (Eluemunor).

“Ezeudu has taken left tackle snaps. But then, once this happens, you have discussions about how you want to approach it. We’ll do a few things here this week and then ultimately after Friday’s practice, we’ll make our decision on how we’re going to go with that.”

Daboll has said that both Ezeudu and Neal have improved from the players they’ve been in the past. Both have struggled too often than not for the fans’ liking.

Most Giants beat writers were not even mentioning Ezeudu as Plan B here. They figured the Giants would shift Eluemunor over the left side and insert Neal on the right.

That could still happen but Eluemunor has settled in on the right side and would prefer to stay put.

“If I have to, I’ll do it. But I believe in EZ (Ezeudu), and I like playing right tackle. But I think that we have the players here in order to help soften the burden. And Dabs is able to adjust some things to make it easier for certain guys in there and get him going,” he said.

Neal told reporters that he is ready to play either side. After two-plus seasons of inconsistency and injuries, the former 2022 No. 7 overall pick just wants to play.

“I feel like it would be an adjustment, but not a huge one,” Neal said of playing left tackle, his position in college at Alabama. “Since I’ve been in the league, I’ve been playing primarily on the right side. But, left tackle is something that I can do if need be.”

We shall find out come Friday afternoon which plan wins out. One thing is for certain: No outside help is likely to happen until next week at the soonest.

Giants’ Joshua Ezeudu has first crack to replace Andrew Thomas

The New York Giants know they can’t replace injured LT Andrew Thomas but are going to try different alignments to see which is the best.

With All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas out for the season after undergoing surgery Wednesday morning to repair a Lisfranc fracture in his left foot, the New York Giants must now attempt to backfill the gaping holes left behind.

On Wednesday morning, head coach Brian Daboll gave reporters a glimpse of what the team’s collective thinking on the subject might be, and it wasn’t what many had expected.

Daboll said that former third-round pick Joshua Ezeudu would take the first team snaps at left tackle at practice with Jermaine Eluemunor staying on the right side and Evan Neal remaining on the sideline.

“Well, you can’t replace an Andrew Thomas. I feel terrible for him. I was able to text with him today. He had his surgery this morning, everything was successful. He’s a leader, he’s a captain, he’s great in the locker room, he’s a very good football player. So, that’s what the development of players is all about. We’ve had six weeks here in the regular season where Evan (Neal) has taken, I’d say, the majority of right tackle snaps in case something happened to Jermaine (Eluemunor). Ezeudu has taken left tackle snaps. But then, once this happens, you have discussions about how you want to approach it. We’ll do a few things here this week and then ultimately after Friday’s practice, we’ll make our decision on how we’re going to go with that.”

Daboll also said no decision would be made on the lineup until Friday but it looks as if Ezeudu — who has been shaky at times but is said to be much improved — will get first dibs at left tackle.

If Ezeudu doesn’t pass the test, the Giants will likely go with the plan most believed was the most logical — move Eluemunor to left tackle and fill in the right side with Neal.

Giants’ Josh Ezeudu carted off, 3 others injured during Friday’s practice

It was a rough Friday in East Rutherford as New York Giants OL Josh Ezeudu was carted off, three others were injured and two more got sick.

It was a scorcher on Friday in East Rutherford with the heat index soaring above 100, but that didn’t stop the New York Giants, who adorned full pads for the third time this summer.

That combination yielded unfortunate results as offensive lineman Joshua Ezeudu was carted off the field toward the end of practice.

Ezeudu was seen limping before the cart came out to pick him up but given the heat and dew point, it’s possible he was just cramping up.

The heat also got to center Austin Schlottmann, who briefly left the field while vomiting, as well as wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton. It was that kind of day.

Meanwhile, three other Giants also went down with injuries, including tight end Jack Stoll, who appeared to suffer a knee injury. He was joined on the sideline by defensive tackle D.J. Davidson, both of whom were attended to by trainers and Ronnie Barnes.

Finally, wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie also suffered an injury to his lower back or ribs after getting hit by Dyontae Johnson near the sideline.

McKenzie eventually got up and walked off the field but he was clearly in a significant amount of pain.

The Giants did not offer immediate updates on any of the players.

Giants’ Jermaine Eluemunor injured in first training camp practice

New York Giants OL Jermaine Eluemunor exited the team’s first training camp practice of 2024 with an injury but waived off the cart.

With Evan Neal on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, Jermaine Eluemunor shifted outside to right tackle in his first training camp practice as a member of the New York Giants.

That ended swiftly.

During the final half of Wednesday’s practice, Eluemunor went down with an undisclosed injury and required the help of left tackle Andrew Thomas and head athletic trainer Ronnie Barnes to reach his feet.

Several trainers surrounded Eluemunor on the sideline and eventually, they called for the cart but the veteran waved it off and walked back into the building under his own power.

Along with Jon Runayn Jr., Eluemunor was among the Giants’ prized free agent additions. He is a favorite of offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo and was slated to start at guard this season. His addition was intended to help shore up an offensive line that was among the worst in football history just a year ago.

If Eluemunor’s injury is at all serious, it would be a major step backward for a team that is heavily reliant on O-line health this season.

After Eluemunor’s exit, Josh Ezeudu stepped in at right tackle.
