Black stripe alert! With fall camp in full swing, Ryan Day and the Ohio State coaching staff are looking to see who stands out and who will begin to separate themselves from the pack. The Buckeyes are loaded on both sides of the ball, but questions still remain.

It’s been reported that the quarterback battle is neck and neck, but to be honest, it won’t matter who is under center if the line doesn’t perform well. Ohio State went to the transfer portal this offseason to try and add depth to a unit that saw three guys drafted to NFL teams.

Enter Jimmy Simmons who transferred from San Diego State in the spring. Simmons lost his black stripe on Thursday and is now an official member of the Brotherhood.

Simmons was a three-star recruit from La Mesa, California. He moved up to a four-star once he hit the transfer portal after outstanding play with the Aztecs. Only a red-shirt sophomore, Simmons will have three years of eligibility remaining to give to the Buckeyes.

Ohio State lands offensive tackle from transfer portal

The Ohio State football team added another intriguing player from the transfer portal, offensive tackle Josh Simmons. He is a standout from San Diego State in the Mountain West Conference.

The former three-star recruit in the class of 2021 was one of the top players in the spring transfer portal and was a four-star to 247Sports. Simmons chose Ohio State over other powerhouses such as Florida and Texas A&M.

Simmons is a redshirt sophomore with three years of eligibility left and undoubtedly will have to compete to start at either left or right tackle in 2023. This is not a situation where Simmons departed San Diego State due to playing time. He started every game at right tackle last season. After announcing his intentions to transfer in February, he took his time to find his next landing spot.

It is a bit surprising to see Ohio State so active in the post-spring transfer window. Simmons is the second addition, but, hopefully, this is another step in the rebuilding of a unit in need of it.

Ohio State hosting offensive tackle from transfer portal

Apparently, Ryan Day isn’t satisfied with the current situation on the Ohio State offensive line. With both previous starting tackles about to start their NFL careers, the Buckeye have little to no experience at the position.

It was reported that San Diego State transfer tackle, Josh Simmons, will be taking a visit to OSU on Friday. Simmons was a four-star prospect in the 2021 class starting 13 games at right tackle for the Aztecs this past season. The red-shirt freshman is listed at 6-foot-6 and 305 pounds.

Coming out of high school Simmons held offers from all the big boys including Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, and USC.

He announced his intent to transfer in February but officially entered the portal on April 15. While Ohio State is getting the first crack at persuading the young man to come to Columbus, his commitment is far from a slam dunk. Simmons will also visit Florida and Colorado in May.

Simmons may not have been playing top-notch competition in the Mountain West, but if he did choose to come to Ohio State, he would automatically become the most experienced player at the tackle position. Something the Buckeye offensive line could sorely use.

San Diego State transfer OL sets May official visit date with Florida

Florida’s looking to add some more pieces to its offensive line and former San Diego State lineman Josh Simmons might be a name to keep an eye on.

The Gators are looking to add to their offensive line room during the spring transfer portal period, and San Diego State’s [autotag]Josh Simmons[/autotag] is one of the top targets for Florida, according to Swamp247.

Billy Napier’s recruiting staff has been working to get Simmons on campus for a while, and now he’s locked in for an official visit May 5. The spring portal is open from April 15-30, so that means he’ll be in town after it closes. He could still commit and transfer sight unseen, though.

Simmons started all 13 games for San Diego State a year ago and finished the season one snap shy of 800. That’s enough of a sample size for draft experts to consider him a potential prospect, and getting reps in against the SEC would be the best way for him to keep his draft stock on the rise.

Florida added guard [autotag]Micah Mazzccua[/autotag] and tackles [autotag]Damieon George[/autotag] and [autotag]Kiyaunta Goodwin[/autotag] during the winter portal period, but it became apparent during spring practices and the Orange and Blue Game that Napier needed to add another player or two to the trenches.

Simmons fits the bill perfectly. He doesn’t necessarily have to step into a starting role right away, but he has the experience to do so if the team needs him to.
