Why Chargers fans should be excited about WR Josh Palmer

Newest Chargers wide receiver Josh Palmer’s best playing days are still ahead of him.

After getting a dynamic defender in Asante Samuel Jr., the Chargers turned their attention back to the offensive side of the ball where they felt like it was only right to get a piece for quarterback Justin Herbert.

Los Angeles picked former Tennessee wide receiver Josh Palmer with the No. 77 overall selection.

When you look at his stat sheet from college, it’s easy to be swayed away from the pick as he failed to surpass 34 targets and 500 yards. But the reality is that the numbers don’t do the justice to reflect the type of player Palmer really is and can be at the next level.

Palmer, the Canada native, never produced eye-popping production at Tennessee due to playing alongside Marquez Callaway (Saints) and Jauan Jennings (49ers) for two seasons and the team’s ongoing quarterback problems.

Palmer, the 6-foot-1 and 210 pounder, ran mostly vertical routes in the Vol’s offense and rarely got targeted because of it.

But when he was targeted, he made the most of his opportunities, showing up against some elite cornerback prospects, including Patrick Surtain II and Tyson Campbell.

With adequate play at the quarterback position, Palmer opened some eyes at the Reese’s Senior Bowl. He defeated defenders with violent route-running and the speed to create separation as well as the sticky hands to catch everything thrown his way.

His 81% win rate was the highest of any outside receiver at the Senior Bowl one-on-ones, according to Pro Football Focus.

His performance in Mobile, AL helped boost his draft stock, and the Bolts saw a physical pass-catcher who possessed the long speed, route-running chops, play strength and ball skills, profiling as a high-upside wideout with big-play capabilities.

Now on a team with a competent quarterback, Palmer should easily be more productive in the NFL than he was in college.

Browns 2021 draft: A wide receiver for every round

A wide receiver prospect for all 7 rounds of the 2021 NFL draft with an eye for the Cleveland Browns fits

The latest in the series of potential targets for the Cleveland Browns in the 2021 NFL draft features the wide receivers.

It’s a deep class with ready-made contributors available for every type of receiver. The Browns don’t necessarily need a wide receiver in 2021 with Odell Beckham Jr. coming back healthy, Jarvis Landry still playing very well, a freshly re-signed Rashard Higgins and promising young Donovan Peoples-Jones already on the roster. But they have some long-term needs, and this is a class that could fill those needs.

The 2021 NFL draft will take place April 29-May 1 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Draft Wire released its big board with round-by-round grades for 300 players.

A trio of former Vols are listed. Below is a look at where they are listed as top 300 players in the 2021 NFL draft.

Rankings are based on grades from a macro level, which means they are likely to vary in many ways from individual team boards that have to take different team-specific variables into account (scheme, position needs, philosophy, medical evaluations by team doctors, private interviews with prospects, etc.).

Lions 2021 NFL draft: A wide receiver for every round

Identifying a WR prospect for each round of the 2021 NFL Draft for the Detroit Lions

The ongoing series of Detroit Lions prospects at a position for each round of the 2021 NFL draft moves to offense. After covering linebackers, safeties and cornerbacks, the shift to wide receiver spotlights the biggest positional need on offense.

Right now, the Lions depth chart is loaded with NFL journeymen on short-term deals. Tyrell Williams, Breshad Perriman and Kalif Raymond are the top three after signing in free agency, with holdover Quintez Cephus and 2020 opt-out Geronimo Allison rounding out the crew.

In short, wide receiver a position of dire long-term need for both high-end impact and depth for Detroit. Expect at least one Lions pick to get devoted to wide receiver, and it’s certainly possible multiple WRs come off the board to the Lions in this deep, diverse draft class.

The projected rounds here are based on a sampling of mock drafts and projections as of April 10. The Lions do not have picks in the sixth or seventh round as of now but we included prospects for those rounds just in case…

Tennessee senior wide receiver Josh Palmer accepted an invitation to the bowl Monday.

The NCAA has allowed for all players to not have eligibility count in 2020, meaning Palmer could return again as a senior next season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt discussed Palmer accepting his Senior Bowl invitation.

“Usually we talk to players about these things at the end of the season,” Pruitt said. “It’s kind of unusual, I guess this past week would normally have been the SEC championship game, so our season has been moved back a couple of weeks.

“We’ve not really had those conversations, but it’s a great opportunity for Josh. With an invite to the Senior Bowl, they don’t just give those things away, so it’s a great opportunity for him.”
