Jalen McCleskey among multiple free agent receivers at Saints tryouts

The Saints tried out several free agent wide receivers, a kicker, and QB Clayton Thorson, a former Eagles draft pick, on Tuesday:

It’s pretty obvious that the New Orleans Saints need improvement at wide receiver and place kicker, so it’s good to see them show some initiative in addressing those concerns. They brought in five free agents for tryouts on Tuesday — an off day for rostered players, when coaches and personnel scouts have time to evaluate them — and some might be more familiar than others. Here is who auditioned on Tuesday, Nov. 16:

Broncos made several changes to practice squad Tuesday

Changes to Broncos’ practice squad — out LB Avery Williamson and cut WR Josh Malone. In: WR John Brown and CB Rojesterman Farris.

The Denver Broncos’ practice squad made four roster moves on Tuesday as general manager George Paton continues to revise the bottom of the roster. Here’s a quick recap of the team’s recent transactions.

Broncos sign WR Josh Malone to practice squad, cut 2 players

The Broncos added more depth at receiver by signing Josh Malone to the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos have signed wide receiver Josh Malone to their 16-player practice squad, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Malone (6-3, 205 pounds) is a 25-year-old receiver who entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of Tennessee with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2016. After spending the first two years of his career in Cincy, Malone played for the New York Jets from 2019-2020.

Malone has totaled 11 catches for 91 yards and one touchdown in 26 career games. He played in four games with the Jets last season.

The Broncos needed to add more depth at receiver after losing Diontae Spencer (chest), Jerry Jeudy (ankle) and KJ Hamler (knee) to injuries.

In addition to signing Malone, Denver also cut cornerback Rojesterman Farris and offensive lineman Harry Crider from the practice squad. The Broncos still have one open spot remaining on the practice squad.

Denver is preparing to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road this week.

Jets release 4, place DE Vinny Curry on reserve/NFI list

The Jets cut Tristen Hoge, Edmond Robinson, Josh Malone and Manasseh Bailey to trim the roster to 80 players.

The Jets roster shrunk to 80 players Tuesday after the team released tackle Tristen Hoge, linebacker Edmond Robinson and receivers Josh Malone and Manasseh Bailey.

New York also placed veteran defensive end Vinny Curry on the Reserve/NFI list.

None of the cuts are terribly surprising, as all four were longshots to make the roster.

Hoge is an undrafted free agent out of BYU who played in 46 offensive snaps in the preseason. He would have been a backup offensive lineman.

Robinson signed with the Jets earlier this month after spending last year with the Falcons. He played in 10 defensive snaps and 17 special teams this preseason. His role would have been on special teams.

Malone moved between the Jets practice squad and active roster the past two seasons and appeared in six games over that span. Bailey is heading into his second season in the league but first with the Jets after spending time with the Chargers and Eagles last season. In a crowded receiver room,  Malone and Bailey didn’t have a path to the roster.

The Jets already expected Curry to be out until Week 2, so his designation is not a shock. He can be activated at any time between now and the start of the season. If the Jets keep him on the NFI list for Week 1, he’ll have to miss the first six games of the season.

Final roster cuts are next week. The Jets will need to cut 27 players to get the roster down to 53 ahead of the regular season.

Jets sign Lamar Jackson to active roster, place Chris Hogan on IR

Jets signed Lamar Jackson to active roster and placed Chris Hogan on injured reserve.

After suffering a high ankle sprain on Sunday against the Cardinals, Chris Hogan will be out a few weeks.

New York announced on Tuesday that it has signed Lamar Jackson to the active roster and placed Hogan on injured reserve. The Jets also signed WR Josh Malone to the practice squad and used a practice squad protection on QB Mike White.

Hogan was a late signing in training camp and emerged as a starting wide receiver due to all the injuries at the position. On the year, Hogan has 14 receptions for 118 yards.

As for Jackson, he has been up from the practice squad the last two games. He’s recorded eight tackles and one pass defense in two games. Jackson was given a tough task this past week against DeAndre Hopkins, who recorded him six catches for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Malone spent the first four games with the Jets before his release. He totaled four catches for 16 yards in four games. White has been serving as New York’s backup when Joe Flacco or Sam Darnold have been hurt.

Jets activate Le’Veon Bell off injured reserve after three-game absence

The Jets activated Le’Veon Bell off injured reserve after he missed the last three games with a hamstring injury.

After a three-game absence caused by a hamstring injury, Le’Veon Bell will make his return against the Cardinals on Sunday.

The Jets activated Bell off injured reserve after he spent the last three weeks on it with a hamstring injury. New York also signed Jimmy Murray to the active roster and promoted Mike White and Lamar Jackson from the practice squad. Alec Ogletree and Josh Malone were both released.

Bell should be a boost to a Jets’ running game that has struggled so far in 2020. As a team, the Jets are averaging 98.5 rushing yards per game, good for 26th in the league.

Murray will serve as an extra offensive lineman with Mekhi Becton listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game. White will be the backup quarterback behind incumbent starter Joe Flacco.

Jackson made his debut last week against the Broncos and two tackles and a pass breakup. He’ll be needed if Bless Austin can’t go, as he is listed as questionable with a calf injury.

VFL Josh Malone signed to New York Jets active roster

The former Tennessee star is back on an active NFL roster.

Former Tennessee standout wide receiver Josh Malone is back on a NFL 53-man roster, as he was signed by the New York Jets off their practice squad, the franchise officially announced Thursday.

Malone has seen action already this season, playing in both of the Jets’ first two matchups. Though he did not register a statistic in the Jets’ season-opening loss to the Buffalo Bills, he did catch four passes for 16 yards and carried the ball once for a 12-yard gain in a Week 2 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Malone was drafted in the fourth round of the 2017 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, but only had seven career catches in Cincinnati for 75 yards and one touchdown. Malone was waived by the Bengals in Sept. 2019 and signed to the Jets’ practice squad shortly after.

He made the Jets’ active roster near the end of last season and will have another chance to make an impact in 2020.

Malone caught 104 passes in his three-year Tennessee career before declaring early for the NFL draft, compiling over 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns. The 2016 season was the best of Malone’s college career, as he caught 50 passes for 972 yards and 11 touchdowns on the way to a 9-4 season for the Vols.

Jets sign WR Josh Malone to active roster, place CB Arthur Maulet on IR

The Jets have signed Josh Malone to the active roster and placed Arthur Maulet on injured reserve.

After being called up from the practice squad twice, the Jets officially signed Josh Malone to the active roster.

New York announced on Tuesday that it has signed Malone to the 53-man roster and placed CB Arthur Maulet on injured reserve. In addition, the Jets released Paul Worrilow from their practice squad.

Under the new practice squad rules, the Jets were allowed to bring Malone up to the gameday roster twice and then send him back down to the practice squad without him being subject to waivers. Since Malone has played two games though, he was subject to waivers.

The Jets now have three healthy wide receivers on the active roster. Along with Malone, the Jets have Chris Hogan and Braxton Berrios. Jamison Crowder is still a question mark for this week with a hamstring injury, while Breshad Perriman is week-to-week with an ankle injury.

As for Maulet, he has to miss at least the next three games under the new injured reserve rules. So the Jets are down to four healthy cornerbacks with Quincy Wilson having a concussion.

The Jets could promote a cornerback from the practice squad to take Maulet’s spot. Javelin Guidry, Lamar Jackson and Zane Lewis are the three cornerbacks on the Jets’ practice squad.

Jets sign LB Alec Ogletree, promote RB Josh Adams & WR Josh Malone to active roster

In wake of Sunday’s matchup against the 49ers, the Jets have signed Alec Ogeltree, while promoting RB Josh Adams and WR Josh Malone.

The Jets made a series of roster moves on Saturday, signing linebacker Alec Ogletree to the active roster and elevating running back Josh Adams and wide receiver Josh Malone from the practice squad for Sunday’s matchup against the 49ers.

Ogletree’s signing comes with Blake Cashman (groin) landing on injured reserve earlier this week and Avery Williamson listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury. Williamson is expected to play, but Ogletree bolsters New York’s linebacker depth nonetheless.

Now that he is on the active roster, Ogletree reunites with his former defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams. Ogletree played his best football under Williams’ watch with the Rams, recording 111 tackles in 2014 and 136 in 2016. He spent the last two seasons with the Giants, but struggled mightily for New York.

As for Adams and Malone, they have been elevated to the active roster for the second consecutive week. The NFL’s new 2020 rules allow teams to promote two players from their 16-man practice squad to have a gameday roster of 55.

Adams joins a backfield that is without Le’Veon Bell, who is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Frank Gore has been deemed the starter with Kalen Ballage and La’Mical Perine also in the mix. The Jets just re-added Ballage this week, while Perine is expected to make his season debut after dealing with an ankle injury. In New York’s 27-17 loss to the Bills in Week 1, Adams had two carries for eight yards and a score.

Malone will likely see more snaps on offense this week after just taking 10  on special teams in New York’s season opener. With Jamison Crowder sidelined with a hamstring injury, Malone joins Breshad Perriman, Chris Hogan and Braxton Berrios as the only healthy receivers on the Jets’ depth chart.

Jets send Josh Adams, Josh Malone back to practice squad

The Jets sent two players back to the practice squad after Sunday’s loss.

RB Josh Malone and WR Josh Adams are heading back to the practice squad, per the NFL transaction wire.

Both players appeared in the Jets’ Week 1 loss to the Bills on Sunday. Adams ran for eight yards on two tries, including a garbage-time touchdown, in the 27-17 defeat. He also caught two passes for 14 yards.

Malone, meanwhile, returned a kick for 16 yards.

New COVID-19 inspired rules allow for players to revert to the practice squad twice without having to pass through waivers. Adams will likely be back for the Jets’ Week 2 matchup with the 49ers, as Le’Veon Bell is expected to miss time with a hamstring injury.

Malone could also return depending on the overall recovery of New York’s banged-up wide receiver room.
