Jags snag PK Chase McLaughlin from Vikings’ practice squad

The Jags have zoomed in on a new starting kicker as Josh Lambo is now out for the season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed second-year place kicker Chase McLaughlin from the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad to their active roster Tuesday. The transaction came after the Jags placed veteran Josh Lambo (gluteus medius) on injured reserve for a second time, ending his 2020 season.

However, before McLaughin can join the active roster, he’ll have to spend some time on the exempt/commissioner permission list until he goes through all of the necessary testing for COVID-19.

McLaughin entered the league in 2019 (with the Bills) as an undrafted player and has participated in 11 games, which were dispersed amongst his time with the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and San Francisco 49ers last season. He’ll enter his tenure with the Jags with a 78.3% field goal conversion rate (18-of-23) and a 100% extra point attempt rate (26-of-26).

With the injury being a severe one, the Jags placed Lambo on IR and began their search for a new kicker. He sustained the injury on the Jags’ last play of Week 9’s game against Houston where they tried to retain possession with an on-side kick but failed. While hustling to the ball, Lambo re-aggravated the injury which he missed time for after the Jags’ Week 2 meeting against the Tennessee Titans to Week 7’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Report: Jags expected to place PK Josh Lambo on IR again, which would end his season

Despite coming up short by a score of 27-25 against the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars made the game interesting and were competitive unlike in some of the games they’ve had earlier in the season. However, the game seemingly didn’t come without its casualties as kicker Josh Lambo is now set to be out for the season.

Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the veteran kicker is headed to injured reserve after injuring his gluteus medius muscle Sunday. With it being his second time having an IR designation, that means he won’t be able to return again until 2021.

This is a big blow to the Jags not only because Lambo is an elite kicker, but also because they’ve struggle without him. He also went on IR before Week 3’s game against the Miami Dolphins due to the injury and the Jags went through several kickers (four to be exact) trying to find the answer. None could fill his void and struggled in Lambo’s place, and now the team might turn back to Jon Brown (from their practice squad). As many fans can recall, Brown was a player who the Jags got a look at in Lambo’s absence as he started Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.

In Sunday’s game, Lambo was 2-of-2 on his field goals, one of which tied Josh Scobee for the longest in team history for 59-yards. The veteran did miss an extra point attempt, however, putting him at 1-of-2 for the day.

Lambo injured himself on the Jags’ last play, which was an onside kick. In addition to the injury, the kick was recovered by the Texans allowing them to take a knee and claim the victory.

Jags final injury report for Week 7: LB Myles Jack, safety Jarrod Wilson among players ruled out

The Jags will be without several starters, including LB Myles Jack.

The Jacksonville Jaguars ruled three players out for their Week 7 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Two of those players were starters in linebacker Myles Jack (ankle) and safety Jarrod Wilson (hamstring).

The other player who was ruled out was tight end Tyler Eifert (neck).

Both Jack and Wilson sustained their respective injuries last Sunday against the Detroit Lions, causing them to exit the game early. Replacing Jack was linebacker Dakota Allen while Brandon Watson was the player who replaced Wilson. Allen and Watson could also start against the Chargers, too, who could be a handful for the defense due to Justin Herbert having a hot hand.

The only other player to surface on the injury report was starting right guard A.J. Cann, who also exited Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury. He was replaced by rookie Ben Bartch, who also was on the injury report earlier in the week with a knee and foot injury. With Bartch cleared to go, he’ll be the player to start in Cann’s place if the veteran is unable to play.

Jags activate PK Josh Lambo alongside other roster transactions

Jags kicker Josh Lambo is officially back from injured reserve.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ injury report was one with many names on it, but one player who seemingly has been cleared to return is placekicker Josh Lambo. After being designated to return from injured reserve (with a left hip injury) earlier in the week, the team officially activated him Thursday.

Lambo’s return is a huge one for the Jags as their kicking game has struggled since his absence which dates back to after Week 2’s game against the Tennessee Titans. The Jags went through four kickers while Lambo recovered due to injuries or struggles on the field in Brandon Wright, Aldrick Rosas, Stephen Hauschka, and Jon Brown.

Of course, with Brown being the Jags’ active kicker Week 6, he was released upon Lambo’s return. Defensive end Josh Mauro was released, too, after spending time on the commissioner’s exempt list. The veteran was placed on the list after serving a five-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs and also had to be placed on the Jags’ Reserve/ COVID-19 list this past weekend.

Mauro’s release made room for the Jags to promote undrafted rookie tight end, Ben Ellefson, from their practice squad to their main roster. Ellefson’s promotion is likely a result of the Jags’ injury situation at tight end as veteran Tyler Eifert didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday with a neck injury.

Ellefson was able to gain some experience earlier this season, participating in the Jags’ Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts and Week 2’s game against the Titans. While he didn’t register any catches in those games, Week 2’s game marked a start for him and he was able to register 30 snaps when combining his snaps from both games.

Lastly, the Jags placed veteran defensive tackle Abry Jones on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The decision came after he didn’t participate in practice Thursday with the injury. As a result of Thursday’s transaction, Jones won’t be eligible to return until three more games, which means he’ll have to sit out of their games against the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Green Bay Packers.

Jaguars injury report for Thursday: Tyler Eifert, A.J. Cann downgraded from limited to DNP

Two key members for the Jags’ offense were downgraded on Thursday’s injury report, leaving their status for the final report in the dark.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t have many big changes on their injury report Thursday for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. However, the two most noteworthy ones were mostly on offense.

Starting guard A.J. Cann (shoulder) and No. 2 tight end Tyler Eifert (neck), were both downgraded from limited on Wednesday to non-participation on Thursday. It appears the Jags specifically could be gearing to go into Sunday’s game without Eifert after promoting rookie tight end Ben Ellefson from their practice squad. If Eifert can’t go, that would mean the Jags would have three tight ends available in Ellefson, Tyler Davis and veteran James O’Shaughnessy.

As for Cann, it looks like Friday will be an important day for him as well as the No. 2 guard behind him, Ben Bartch (foot, knee), who was on the report as a limited participant for the second-consecutive day.

There were several other key names to remain limited with Bartch who will be worth watching for on the final injury report. Those players were receivers DJ Chark Jr. (ankle) and Laviska Shenault (hamstring), defensive end Josh Allen (knee), linebacker Dakota Allen (foot), and guard Andrew Norwell (ankle).

Kicker Josh Lambo was also amongst the notables who were limited, but he’s set to make a return after being moved to the active roster Thursday. The team also released kicker Jon Brown, which pretty much solidified the veteran’s return.

Veteran defensive tackle Abry Jones (ankle) was placed on IR after being downgraded to non-participation Thursday. Fellow starter Myles Jack (ankle) also didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice, too, marking his second day of missing practice. In all probability that means he’s trending towards sitting Sunday’s game out, which means Dakota Allen would get the nod to start for him again if he’s not in the status column of the final report.

As for Jones, rookie DaVon Hamilton could get to start in his place for the second straight week.

Jags PK Josh Lambo ‘designated to return’ from injured reserve

Josh Lambo moves closer to a return from IR as the Jags ‘designated him to return’ Wednesday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced that place kicker Josh Lambo has been “designated to return” from injured reserve. As a result, the team will now have 21 days to activate him to their active roster. This also means he could suit up as soon as Sunday to take the field against his former team in the Los Angeles Chargers.

Lambo was placed on IR after the Jags’ Week 3 game against the Tennessee Titans with a hip injury. Under the new injured reserve rules which were changed because of the coronavirus pandemic, he had to remain on injured reserve for three games, so he was eligible to return after the team’s Week 5 game against the Houston Texans.

Since his injury, the Jags have gone through three kickers due to injuries and performance. Those kickers were Brandon Wright, Aldrick Rosas and Stephen Hauschka. They’re now on there fourth player at the position in Jon Brown, who previously spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers.

During their stretch without Lambo, the Jags’ field goal kicking has been shaky as the team has missed four field goals. One was from Rosas (Week 4), two were from Hauschka (Week 5), and one was from Brown (Week 6). Wright also missed an extra point attempt against the Miami Dolphins.

The Jags’ decision to designate Lambo for a return could be a good sign as coach Doug Marrone said the team would evaluate him on Wednesday or Thursday earlier in the week. Ultimately, time will tell how he looks closer to Sunday, but if he fares well throughout the week, he’ll undoubtedly be activated in the coming days.

Josh Lambo to begin kicking in practice again, could return Week 7 if healthy

The Jags could be getting their star kicker Josh Lambo back after the kicking game has struggled the last few weeks.

Jacksonville Jaguars place kicker could be on the verge of returning this week as the team prepares for the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Doug Marrone told the media the Jags would get a look at the veteran Wednesday or Thursday, and if he feels good enough to go, he’ll get the nod.

Having Lambo would be huge for the Jags as their kicking game has struggled this season. They’ve gone through three kickers (Brandon Wright, Aldrick Rosas and Stephen Hauschka) in his absence and Jon Brown currently holds his spot on the team. The team is 5-of-8 on field goals since Lambo went on injured reserve, with the two coming from Hauschka (Week 5) and one coming from Brown against the Detroit Lions.

Lambo has kicked at a Pro Bowl level for the Jags since joining the team in 2017, making 74-of-78 field goals (94.9%), so it goes without saying having him back would give the team more security. However, if he’s not ready, Brown could get another chance to take the field with the team.

Report: D.J. Chark ‘trending upward’ for game vs. Dolphins with chest and back injuries

Jags WR DJ Chark will be a game time decision for Thursday night, but NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that he’s ‘trending upward.’

While we will ultimately know his status closer to the game, Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver D.J. Chark is trending in the right direction health-wise for tonight’s Thursday Night Football battle against the Miami Dolphins.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was able to provide an update on the third-year receiver early Thursday morning after Chark was limited in practice Monday and Tuesday, but missed Wednesday’s session and was ruled questionable on the final injury report.

If Chark can play, it would give Gardner Minshew II his top target as Chark accumulated 73 catches for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns in 2019 and went to the Pro Bowl. This year, Chark has only managed to garner seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown, but that’s been because Minshew has done a good job spreading the ball around.

Having Chark suit up could also be a huge issue for the Dolphins as they ruled out starting cornerback Byron Jones with a groin and Achilles injury. Starting in his place will be first-round rookie Noah Igbinoghene, who had a rough Sunday against the Buffalo Bills, allowing seven completions for over 140 yards and two touchdowns. With that being the case, our comrades over at Dolphins Wire believe Miami should utilize Xavien Howard to cover Chark if he plays.

If Chark is held out of the game, things could be a little closer, but still favorable for the Jags. Their depth at receiver is on a strength of the team and there are several others who could step up in the absence of Chark like Keelan Cole or Dede Westbrook (who was inactive Weeks 1-2). They’ve also received solid contributions from rookies Laviska Shenault Jr. and Collin Johnson.

Clearly, we’ll know more about Chark’s status when the Jags release their list of inactives. However, if the Jags want to allow him more time to heal up, this might be the right time because the Dolphins have struggled mightily on defense.

Final injury report for Week 3: Jags rule Chark as questionable, Linder ruled OUT vs. Dolphins

The Jags may be without two key offensive starters against the Miami Dolphins, who have a key defensive injury of their own to deal with.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without several key players for their Thursday Night Football battle with the Miami Dolphins, most of which are on the offensive side.

As expected, the Jags ruled center Brandon Linder out after he sustained a knee injury in Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans. With him set to be sidelined, Tyler Shatley, who has seven career starts at center (15 starts overall) will start in his place.

Receiver D.J. Chark Jr. was ruled questionable and didn’t practice Wednesday. He was limited both on Monday and Tuesday so his status could go either way come game time. Luckily, if he can’t go the Jags a pretty strong at receiver with Keelan Cole, Dede Westbrook (who has been inactive all season), and rookies Laviska Shenault Jr. and Collin Johnson behind him.

As mentioned earlier, kicker Josh Lambo was ruled out with a hip injury and will be going on injured reserve. Starting in his place will be practice squad rookie Brandon Wright from Georgia State University.

The only two other players to surface on the injury report for the Jags, Tyler Davis and Brandon Watson, were full participants in practice and were left off the status column.

As for the Dolphins, they ruled their star cornerback Byron Jones out with a hip and Achilles injury, which means rookie Noah Igbinoghene will start in his place. In their last game, the first-rounder struggled mightily so his matchups on the outside will be worth watching Thursday.

The Dolphins also ruled backup safety Clayton Fejedelem out, too, while all of the others on their injury report were full participants.

Injury news: Jags to place PK Josh Lambo on injured reserve

The Jags will be without Josh Lambo for a few weeks, who is one of the better kickers in the league.

While the Miami Dolphins are battling some key injuries for Thursday’s game, the Jacksonville Jaguars will have to overcome some of their own. The team will be placing place kicker Josh Lambo on injured reserve with a left hip injury, meaning he’ll be out for at least three weeks.

To replace the veteran, the Jags will be activating undrafted rookie Brandon Wright off their practice squad.

Lambo wasn’t on the Jags‘ initial injury report for Week 3 but surfaced on Tuesday’s as a limited participant. That could mean it was an injury which happened in practice yesterday.

Wright, on the other hand, played collegiately at Georgia State University. He  was 12-of-18 in field goal attempts in 2019 and was 48-of-49 in extra point attempts. He also was a punter for the Panthers and averaged 41.8 yards per punt last season.

With Lambo sidelined, the Jags might look to go for more fourth and short opportunities than expected, although Marrone expressed his confidence in Wright. Then again, if the Jags move the ball against the Dolphins as others have, the kicking game may not impact the game all that much.
