Lions sign CB Josh Hawkins to practice squad, place CB Alex Myers on Practice Squad I.R.

The Detroit Lions announced they have signed corner Josh Hawkins to the practice squad and placed corner Alex Myers on the Practice Squad injured reserve.

The Detroit Lions announced they have signed corner Josh Hawkins to the practice squad and placed corner Alex Myers on the practice squad injured reserve.

Myers signed on to the Lions practice squad in early December, was elevated to the game-day roster in Week 15, but remained on the practice squad last week. This late in the season, an injury doesn’t have to be long term in order to land o I.R., because even if it makes him unavailable for a week, that’s enough to prompt a roster move.

Hawkins will take Myers spot on the practice squad, but with five corners ahead of him on the depth chart and less than a week to acclimate to the scheme, this transaction looks more like the team angling for a potential futures deal.

Undrafted in 2016 out of East Carolina, Hawkins (5-10, 190) initially signed with the Green Bay Packers and played in 26 games, starting three, over his first two seasons in the league. In 2018, Hawkins split his season between the Panthers and Eagles organizations but was active for just six games and recorded no stats.

After leaving the Eagles in 2019, Hawkins joined the XFL Dallas Renegades, and after the league’s abrupt end he re-joined the Panthers practice squad in 2020. He was released in late October before joining the Lions today.

Panthers release WR Seth Roberts from active roster, CB from practice squad

Roberts caught four passes in Carolina, totaling 31 yards.

The Carolina Panthers made several good pickups at the wide receiver position this offseason. At least one was a total dud, though. The team just announced that they have released Seth Roberts, who signed a one-year, $3.1 million deal in March.

Roberts never really got involved offensively and there were reports that the Panthers were having discussions about trading him even before the season began. Roberts caught four passes in Carolina, totaling 31 yards. He was only on the field for 101 total snaps. Releasing Roberts should give at least a little more room for guys like Pharoh Cooper to get involved offensively.

The Panthers also released cornerback Josh Hawkins from their practice squad. Hawkins had previously played for Carolina during the 2018 season.

Panthers host free agent DB Josh Hawkins, 2 others for visits

According to the league’s transaction report, the Panthers hosted free agent defensive back Josh Hawkins as well as linebacker Greg Roberts and defensive tackle Mike Panasiuk for visits Tuesday.

According to the league’s transaction report, the Panthers hosted free agent defensive back Josh Hawkins as well as linebacker Greg Roberts and defensive tackle Mike Panasiuk for visits Tuesday.

Hawkins (5-foot-10, 190 pounds) came into the league in 2016 as an undrafted free agent signed by the Packers and has spent most of his time on practice squads for multiple teams. His most notable season was in 2017, when he totaled 38 tackles and six quarterback hits, playing 38% of defensive snaps for the Packers. He played sparingly in five games for the Panthers in 2018, all on special teams.

Roberts (6-foot-5, 258 pounds) is a second-year player but he might as well be considered a rookie, given that he spent his entire 2019 campaign on the Packers’ PUP list with an abdominal injury. In late July, Green Bay placed him on their reserve/COVID-19 list and released him shortly after.

Panasiuk (6-foot-4, 300 pounds) signed with the Raiders this offseason as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State, but only spent training camp with the team before he was released on roster cut day. As a Spartan, Panasiuk totaled 95 tackles and five sacks on the interior defensive line, capping off his season with a big-man touchdown off of a tipped pass from his teammate (and brother).

The Panthers practice squad is currently full at 16 players, with RB Reggie Bonnafon on IR. If any of these three sign, somebody will need to be cut.

The Falcons also released cornerback Josh Hawkins from the 16-man practice squad, which leaves one spot available on both the active roster and practice squad left to fill.

On Monday, it was reported that Atlanta was planning to add WR Laquon Treadwell, one of the surprise cuts from training camp, to the practice squad. Releasing Hawkins frees the team up to add Treadwell.

Atlanta’s young secondary could benefit from Hawkins’ veteran presence and the 27-year-old should see a decent amount of time in the slot this year. Fans might not be familiar with Hawkins, but that’s what social media is for.

Falcons sign former XFL CB Josh Hawkins

The Atlanta Falcons lack both depth and experience at cornerback after releasing veteran Desmond Trufant in March.

The Atlanta Falcons lack both depth and experience at cornerback after releasing veteran Desmond Trufant in March.

While most expect the team to address the position in the upcoming NFL draft, Atlanta agreed to terms on Wednesday with free agent Josh Hawkins:

Hawkins signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent out of East Carolina. He played in 26 games for the Packers over his first two seasons, before short stints with the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Hawkins most recently played in the XFL for the Dallas Renegades. The 27-year-old gives Atlanta some depth at nickel corner. Don’t be surprised to see the Falcons add another defensive back in the first or second round of next week’s virtual draft.
