The Steelers desperately needed depth and they got it on Sunday

The Steelers made some wise moves to bolster depth but not without the release of a 2019 fan favorite.

The Steelers continue to show that they’re pulling out all of the stops to go big or go home in 2020. On Sunday, the team re-signed their former backup quarterback Josh Dobbs and starting safety Sean Davis to bolster the depth of their respective positions.

Devlin “Duck” Hodges was released to make room for Dobbs, and the corresponding move for Davis was safety Curtis Riley. Pittsburgh’s hope is to be able to put Riley back on the practice squad.

Davis had just signed a two-year contract with the Washington Football Team in March.

Punter dilemma?

News came down Saturday that the Steelers were bringing in punter Dustin Colquitt for a tryout to potentially supplant Jordan Berry. Colquitt has played 15 seasons to Berry’s five, but they have similar stats over the last few years. Though Colquitt has 652 fewer punt yards than Berry’s 14,495, Colquitt’s is the more consistent of the two.

Dobbs didn’t play at all for the Jaguars in 2019 and appeared in just five games in 2018. According to Pro Football Reference, he had a 50 percent completion rate and threw an interception.

Davis entered the 2019 season at free safety for the Steelers on the final year of his rookie deal. He suffered a shoulder injury and was placed on injured reserve on Sept. 17, 2019. Following his injury, the Steelers traded their first-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Beyond his three-interception, 92-tackle 2017 season, Davis hadn’t lived up to his second-round draft selection. Despite that, Pittsburgh was woefully thin depth-wise after his departure. Though he didn’t perform to expectations, he won’t be expected to start this time around. When Davis is in the game, at least he’ll know the system, which is a bonus — especially this season. Hopefully lessening his load will get more out of him, so to speak.

As all claimed players do, each will have to pass a physical and go through COVID-19 testing protocols.

The Steelers’ new signing created an awkward situation involving a former ‘Bachelor’ contestant

Both Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph have dated former Bachelor contestant Hannah Ann.

The Steelers made a transaction Sunday that will have little bearing on the NFL landscape in 2020 but could rock the Pittsburgh quarterback room.

OK, I’m being a little dramatic but things could get pretty awkward after the team signed QB Josh Dobbs . You see, Dobbs was dating Bachelor finalist Hannah Ann Sluss back in March. Apparently, things didn’t work out between the two because Hannah Ann confirmed in May that she was dating Steelers backup Mason Rudolph.

That’s right, folks! We got ourselves a full-blown love triangle in the Steel City. The potentially awkward situation was first pointed out by ESPN’s Brooke Pryor…

I have no horse in this race, but Rudolph is a better match for Hannah Ann, in my opinion. Dobbs is a literal rocket scientist, and … how do I put this nicely: During her time on The Bachelor, Hannah Ann didn’t come off like someone who would be very interested in such a daunting academic pursuit. Hannah Ann and Mason have a lot more in common, anyway. Like how both were second choices who disappointed when given a brief stint in the spotlight.

Rudolph also has some things in common with the Bachelor on Hannah Ann’s season, Peter Weber. Like Peter, the most interesting thing about Rudolph’s season involved him taking a hit to the head. Only in Peter’s case, it was a golf cart playing the role of Myles Garrett.

If Rudolph and Dobbs can’t get along, ESPN’s Mina Kimes has figured out the best way to sort out any potential issues…

I would suggest one change to the plan: Have Ben Roethlisberger take the two on the date instead of Tomlin. Big Ben loves drama.

VFL Joshua Dobbs returns to Pittsburgh

Dobbs is reunited with the team that drafted him in 2017.

It didn’t take long for former Tennessee star quarterback Joshua Dobbs to find a new, but familiar NFL home after being cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

Dobbs was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, the same team that drafted him with the No. 135 pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

The 25-year-old was traded to Jacksonville for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft before the start of the 2019 season, and did not play a snap for the Jaguars while backing up Nick Foles and Gardner Minshew.

He returns to Pittsburgh, where he spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as a backup quarterback. Dobbs has only attempted 12 passes in his NFL career, with all 12 coming from the five games he appeared in for the Steelers in 2018. Dobbs completed six of those passes for 43 yards and an interception. He has yet to throw a touchdown in his NFL career.

A stellar collegiate career in Knoxville saw Dobbs throw for over 7,000 yards from 2013-16, with 53 career passing touchdowns and 32 rushing touchdowns.

VFL Joshua Dobbs cut by Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE — Former University of Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

Dobbs, who came into the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, was cut as Jacksonville trimmed its roster to 53 players in preparation for the upcoming 2020 season that begins this week.

The Jaguars traded for Dobbs last season, but he did not see the field after going to North Florida.

Dobbs entered the NFL in 2017 as he was drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round that year. He was selected with 135th overall pick.

In 2019, Dobbs was traded to the Jaguars for a 2020 fifth-round draft pick.

He has played sparingly as a pro, appearing in six games, all with the Steelers in 2018.

Dobbs is 6-for-12 with 43 yards in his career. He has one interception and has not thrown for a touchdown pass in the NFL.

Jags coach Doug Marrone is confident that his QBs can take on any team in ‘Jeopardy!’

The Jags’ QBs room might be the smartest you will find in football and Doug Marrone is willing to put that theory to test.

While the Jacksonville Jaguars may not have the most experienced quarterbacks room, it’s no doubt they have one of the smartest.

Joshua Dobbs is a certified rocket scientist for NASA while Gardner Minshew II scored a 42 on the Wonderlic test. New draftee Jake Luton wasn’t too far behind Minshew in terms of his Wonderlic score, acquiring a 33 while the newest member of the group, Mike Glennon, finished college with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a master’s degree in Arts in Liberal Studies.

Clearly, the Jags’ quarterback room isn’t lacking when it comes to book smarts, which is why coach Doug Marrone is confident that they could take on any team in the league when it comes to trivia. In his Zoom conference with the media Friday, Marrone said his group will challenge any team to a game of Jeopardy though that may not do much for them on Sundays.

While we don’t know exactly where the Jags’ quarterbacks room would rank in terms of their work on the gridiron, it’s clear they won’t have a hard time finding work after football.

As for the group’s outlook for 2020, clearly, Minshew is the guy heading forward. Glennon and Dobbs will have the chance to battle for the backup spot, though it’s not out of the realm of possibilities to keep both. Luton, on the other hand, will be a developmental player and his 2020 season on the roster would likely have to come on the Jags’ practice squad.

Joshua Dobbs rated as 25th best backup quarterback by CBS Sports

The backup quarterback has always been one of the most overlooked positions in football. Teams never know how much you need a serviceable backup until the starter gets hurt and if their plan B isn’t serviceable it could cost them important games.

CBS Sports recently released their backup quarterback power rankings and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Joshua Dobbs found himself at No. 25 according to writer Sean Warner-McGough:

25. Jaguars’ Joshua Dobbs

Dobbs spent part of his offseason working at NASA. He majored in aerospace engineering at the University of Tennessee. I bring this up because Dobbs appears to have a very bright future after football. As for his future in football, it’s still unclear. He’s only thrown 12 passes in his entire career. That makes him better than the options listed before him. We know they’re bad quarterbacks. We suspect Dobbs isn’t good, but we don’t know for certain.

Dobbs will look to be the Jags’ backup quarterback behind Gardner Minshew II for a second year and will have to battle new free agent addition Mike Glennon this preseason to get the job. Dobbs was brought over in a trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fifth-round pick in 2019 after only seeing five games total of NFL action in 2018. Dobbs completed only six passes out of 12 for 43 yards during that time.

While the football world isn’t too sold on the Jaguars’ quarterback depth, they still ranked higher than teams such as the Seattle Seahawks, the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings, all of which were teams that made the playoffs last season. Dobbs is still pretty young at 25 years of age, so time may only tell if he can fully transition into being a solid backup for the Jags.
