Former Browns QB Josh Dobbs is on the move again

The Titans have signed a former Cleveland Browns quarterback

The Cleveland Browns have had quarterback news all season long. From trading for Deshaun Watson and all the news that has come along with that deal, trading Baker Mayfield, signing and starting Jacoby Brissett, to claiming Kellen Mond off of waivers, the Browns have had a ton of movement under center. One move that came as a result of the end of Watson’s suspension, however, was the release of Josh Dobbs.

The Browns wanted Dobbs back on their practice squad after his release, but Dobbs instead signed to the practice squad of the Detroit Lions. Today, however, Dobbs has been signed off of their practice squad and to the active roster of the Tennessee Titans.

Titans sign QB Josh Dobbs off Lions’ practice squad

With Ryan Tannehill’s status up in the air for Week 16, the Titans have added a quarterback.

With the Tennessee Titans possibly set to not have their starting quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, in Week 16 against the Houston Texans, the team is bringing in another signal-caller just in case.

According to his agent, Mike McCartney, the Titans signed quarterback Joshua Dobbs to their active roster off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.

This would seem to reinforce the idea that there’s a good chance Tannehill doesn’t play against the Texans. On Tuesday, it was reported the veteran signal-caller was facing an “uphill battle” to play on Saturday.

Dobbs will serve as a backup to rookie quarterback Malik Willis, who is expected to get the start in place of Tannehill. The Titans also have Kevin Hogan on the practice squad.

A 2017 fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dobbs has appeared in just six games (zero starts) during his career. He’s completed 10-of-17 passes for 45 yards and one interception. Dobbs also offers some mobility.

QB Josh Dobbs will not come back to Cleveland after all

While the Browns wanted him back on the practice squad, Josh Dobbs has taken his talents north of Cleveland

After spending the first 11 games as the backup quarterback to Jacoby Brissett, the Cleveland Browns waived Josh Dobbs to make room to activate Deshaun Watson. The Browns opted to keep Kellen Mond, who still has two years left on his contract after 2022, as the future backup to Watson.

The Browns wanted Dobbs back on the practice squad after he cleared waivers, but instead, he has taken his talent elsewhere. After working out for the Denver Broncos, Dobbs then visited the Detroit Lions, where he ultimately decided to sign on to their practice squad.

We wish Dobbs the best of luck in Detroit and with the rest of his career.

Broncos tried out 4 players last week, including a quarterback

The Broncos tried out QB Joshua Dobbs and three wide receivers on Friday.

The Denver Broncos brought in three wide receivers and a quarterback for tryouts last week.

Javon McKinley (Notre Dame), Malik Taylor (Ferris State) and Connor Wedington (Stanford) tried out as receivers and Joshua Dobbs (Tennessee) took reps at quarterback, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.

Dobbs (6-3, 216 pounds) entered the league with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. After three years with the Steelers, he had a one-year stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars before returning to the Steelers in 2020. After spending the 2021 season on injured reserve, Dobbs signed with the Cleveland Browns earlier this year.

Dobbs served as a backup with the Browns this season while Deshaun Watson served his suspension after allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct. Cleveland waived Dobbs last week after Watson returned to the active roster.

Dobbs has appeared in six games in his career but is yet to start in a regular-season game. In relief appearances, he has completed 10-of-17 passes for 45 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Dobbs has also rushed six times for 31 yards in the NFL.

Dobbs and the three receivers that tried out for Denver are likely being considered as end-of-season reserve/future contract candidates.

Browns make handful of practice squad moves after Deshaun Watson officially activated

The Browns continue to tinker with their practice squad, making three moves and potentially preparing for a fourth on their reserve unit.

The big news from a day ago surrounding the Cleveland Browns was the official reinstating and activation of quarterback Deshaun Watson. After serving his 11-game suspension, Watson is set to start against his former team as the Browns take on the Houston Texans this Sunday.

However, the Browns also made three practice squad moves. These reserve moves are extremely non-consequential, so too much time does not need to be spent on them. However, by placing one player on Injured Reserve, releasing one player from the practice squad, and signing a third player, the Browns were busy churning the bottom of their roster.

We take a look at those moves here.

Browns waive Josh Dobbs as Deshaun Watson officially returns

The Browns have cleared a roster spot to make way for Deshaun Watson’s return

The NFL has officially reinstated quarterback Deshaun Watson after his 11-game suspension. After the move became official, the Cleveland Browns cleared a roster spot for Watson by waiving quarterback Josh Dobbs.

Despite being inactive every game this season, the Browns opted to keep second-year quarterback Kellen Mond over Dobbs. Using a waiver claim to keep the second-year quarterback, the Browns are planning for beyond 2022 as Mond still has two years left on his rookie contract.

Look for Dobbs to land back on the Cleveland practice squad should he fail to find an active roster spot among the other 32 teams around the NFL.

QB Josh Dobbs could see ‘package of plays’ this year

Dobbs could be a change-of-pace quarterback on rare occasions:

The Cleveland Browns made it very clear that QB Jacoby Brissett would start in place of QB Deshaun Watson if/when a suspension was leveled against the former Houston Texans. They showed little interest in QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who just took a huge pay cut to stay in San Francisco, and traded away QB Baker Mayfield for pennies on the dollar.

Even as QB Josh Dobbs played very well in preseason and some fans clamored for him to start, Brissett’s spot was left unchallenged.

In his lone playing time in the preseason, Cleveland’s temporary starter was 13 for 23 for 109 yards and an interception. Brissett’s receivers didn’t help him much.

Dobbs, on the other hand, completed 66% of his passes for 338 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions during his three games of action. He also had seven rushes for 57 yards and a touchdown and an exhilarating scramble for a two-point conversion.

It is that versatility that could get him on the field in certain packages according to Browns HC Kevin Stefanski:

Unlike college, running different quarterbacks on the field is rare in the NFL but can be useful in specific moments. While Brissett has had a lot of starting experience in his young career, Dobbs has seen minimal time on the field. Having the faster, elusive Dobbs coming in as a change-of-pace quarterback would be interesting on rare occasions.

Josh Dobbs scrambles for a first and almost loses his jersey

Cleveland quarterback Josh Dobbs scrambled away from pressure, nearly losing his jersey in the process.

Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Josh Dobbs got the start on Sunday in the Browns’ second preseason game.

He might need a new jersey before halftime.

On Cleveland’s opening possession of the game, the Browns faced a second down just inside Philadelphia territory. The Eagles brought pressure off the right edge, but Dobbs did just enough to make the initial defender miss before spinning away from danger and racing upfield for a first down.

And when we say just enough, well, we mean it:

As you can see, Dobbs nearly loses his jersey as he escapes from danger:

The quarterback finished off the drive with this short touchdown run, which might not be how the Browns drew it up, but still counts in the box score:

One cannot help but imagine that above image being featured in a Nike commercial sometime soon…

8 biggest questions entering Browns training camp

The 8 biggest questions that need to get answered in Browns training camp

Cleveland Browns training camp kicks off with the rookies reporting on Friday and the full team convening shortly thereafter. The Browns head to Berea for Kevin Stefanski’s third season as head coach with quite a few questions.

The biggest of those is what happens with QB Deshaun Watson, but that’s a greater question than can be answered in training camp. My questions for the Browns deal more with things that can be resolved in training camp and the three preseason games.

Here are the top questions for the Browns to answer on the practice field in training camp.

Browns sign another quarterback to go along with Watson, Mayfield and Brissett

The Browns reportedly made another move Friday afternoon, this time bringing in another mobile quarterback in advance of the start of their offseason program in a week and a half:

In an interesting move late on Friday afternoon, the Cleveland Browns are adding another quarterback to their roster. With Deshaun Watson acquired in a trade, Baker Mayfield still on the roster and Jacoby Brissett signed in free agency, it was thought the team would wait until they moved Mayfield to bring in another quarterback.

Mayfield’s market may not be what the team expected which could lead to a delay in a trade. With the team’s offseason program opening in a week and a half, adding another quarterback helps ease Watson back into action. Even if Mayfield shows up, his recovery from shoulder surgery was expected to limit him.

In comes Joshua Dobbs, according to his agent:

The 6’3″ Dobbs was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft. He has played in just six games where he attempted just 17 passes.

The Steelers traded Dobbs to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 in exchange for a fifth-round pick then claimed him back a year later.

With Watson coming back from a year off of competition and Mayfield unlikely to be able to participate, if he attends, Brissett and Dobbs may get a majority of the throws on April 19th.

A versatile player at Tennesee in college, Dobbs rushed the ball 438 times for over 2,100 yards and 32 touchdowns in his four years in Knoxville.

With Watson, Brissett and, now, Dobbs, the Browns have three mobile quarterbacks set to run the show in 2022 once Mayfield’s future is resolved.
