Ravens announce inactives for Week 5 matchup vs. Colts

The Ravens announced their inactives for their Week 5 matchup against the Colts

The Baltimore Ravens are all set to take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5 of the 2021 season. Baltimore is looking to improve to 4-1 on the year, while Indianapolis will try to pick up their second win of the season.

Both teams are dealing with a plethora of injuries. While the Ravens have responded well, the Colts have struggled a bit to make up lost production. Ahead of the game, Baltimore announced their inactives list that includes just four players in offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley, linebacker Josh Bynes, and safeties Deshon Elliott and Geno Stone.

Stanley was ruled out for the contest on Saturday, so his appearance on the inactives list isn’t a surprise whatsoever. Both Elliott and Stone practiced in a limited fashion on Saturday, but both will be held out as they continue to heal. Bynes had been active over the last few weeks, but will sit on Monday night.

Ravens activate LB Josh Bynes to 53-man roster

The Ravens activated inside linebacker Josh Bynes to the 53-man roster

Injuries have plagued the Baltimore Ravens thus far during the 2021 season. With outside linebacker Daelin Hayes being placed on injured reserve on Monday, Baltimore had to fill yet another void as best as they could. The team decided to grab a veteran inside linebacker off of the practice squad, who has a decade of NFL experience and is on his third stint with the Ravens.

On Tuesday Baltimore announced that inside linebacker Josh Bynes was promoted to the 53-man roster ahead of their Week 4 matchup with the Denver Broncos.

Bynes went undrafted in 2011 and signed with the Ravens in July of that year. Since entering the league, the inside linebacker has bounced around from five different teams, including spending five years in Baltimore. Bynes is best remembered for his tackle in Super Bowl XLVII in which he knocked down wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. on a free kick that sealed the Ravens 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, winning the organization their second championship.

Ravens call up four practice squad players to active roster as COVID-19 replacements for Week 3

The Baltimore Ravens are getting ready to face off against the Detroit Lions in Week 3 of the 2021 season. Baltimore will look to pick up their second win of the year, while Detroit is still in search of their first victory this season.

Ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Lions, Baltimore called up four players from their practice squad to the active roster as COVID-19 replacements. This comes on the heels of the team placing four defenders on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. The players put on the list are all unavailable to play in Week 3, so the four that were called up will provide much needed depth at many different positions.

McKenzie will join a interior defensive line group that will be without Brandon Williams, Justin Madubuike and Derek Wolfe on Sunday, while the team opted not to bring up OLB Chris Smith from the practice squad even though fellow outside linebackers Justin Houston and Jaylon Ferguson will miss Week 3 against Detroit.

Bynes could get a few snaps at inside linebacker, especially if fellow ILB Chris Board (other) is unable to play. Seymour was a practice squad call up last week, and provides cornerback depth to a team that has been hit hard with injuries in the secondary so far. Smith was also called up last week as depth on the offensive line. He will likely be the emergency offensive tackle in case of an injury.

Ravens protect four practice squad players ahead of Week 3

The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up to take on the Detroit Lions in Week 3 of the 2021 season. If Baltimore takes Detroit seriously and is at the top of their game, it could be an easy win for the Ravens. However, they’ll have to make sure they don’t underestimate the Lions, as if they do it could set up to be a trap game.

On Tuesday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that Baltimore has protected four players on their practice squad ahead of their Week 3 matchup with Detroit in quarterback Trace McSorley, running back Le’Veon Bell, offensive tackle David Sharpe and inside linebacker Josh Bynes.

The Ravens’ practice squad protections for Week 3 look very similar to Week 2, where they protected McSorley, Bell, and Bynes along with offensive lineman Andre Smith. Baltimore currently has four offensive tackles on their practice squad, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see Smith or fellow tackle Adrian Ealy promoted to the active roster in the coming days.

The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2 of the 2021 season. Baltimore has done an extensive amount of roster shuffling over the last few days, trying to get healthy players into the organization with the amount of injuries that they have gone through over the recent weeks.

On Wednesday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that the team has protected four players from their practice squad in quarterback Trace McSorley, running back Le’Veon Bell, offensive tackle Andre Smith and inside linebacker Josh Bynes. Those four will not be allowed to be taken off of Baltimore’s practice squad until next week at the earliest, unless they are protected again.

Both McSorley and Bynes were protected last week, and it’s not a surprise to see them both protected again ahead of Week 2. It feels likely that both Bell and Smith would be the two players promoted to the active roster on game day, as the Ravens might want to see what they have in Bell and Baltimore is also very thin at offensive tackle, especially if Ronnie Stanley can’t play.

After trimming their final 2021 roster to 53 players, the Baltimore Ravens have put together a well-balanced practice squad that includes young talent as well as experienced veterans. With the NFL keeping many practice squad rules from 2020, Baltimore can keep 16 extra players with the team, call up two for game day, and protect four each and every week.

On Wednesday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic shed light on who the Ravens would be protecting on the practice squad for the first week of the 2021 season. They used every one of their protection slots, choosing to protect one offensive player and three others on the defensive side of the ball.

Now that McSorley, Bynes, Ellis and Levine are protected, teams can’t sign them from Baltimore’s practice squad until next week at the earliest, unless they are then protected once again.

McSorley is the only other quarterback with the team outside of Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley and he knows the Ravens system, which is valuable. Bynes, Ellis, and Levine each have a case to be game day call ups.

Bynes would be a veteran in the inside linebacker group in the wake of L.J. Fort’s season-ending injury. Ellis could be used for defensive line depth with fellow defensive lineman Derek Wolfe trending in the wrong direction for Week 1 with a back injury. Levine has been the most consistent special teams contributor for years in Baltimore.

Ravens planning on signing veteran ILB Josh Bynes to practice squad

The Ravens are bringing back a familiar face to their practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens have begun rounding out their practice squad after they cut down their roster to 53 players. They will look to add players who have been with the team, but also some outside options who can contribute on game day if called upon. There are plenty of spots available, so Baltimore can fill out their practice squad with depth at multiple positions.

As waiver claim and practice squad reports and began to come in, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reported that the Ravens were planning on bringing back a familiar face, signing inside linebacker Josh Bynes to the practice squad for depth.

This will be the third stint in Baltimore. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Auburn University in 2011, and made the Ravens’ final 53-man roster that year. He was with the team for three years before signing with the Detroit Lions in 2013. After three years in Detroit and also making a two-year stop with the Arizona Cardinals, Bynes returned to Baltimore early in the 2019 season and played well, earning a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2020 offseason. He spent one year there and was signed by the Carolina Panthers late in the 2021 offseason, but was part of their final roster cutdowns.

Bynes will help soften the blow of losing inside linebacker L.J. Fort. Unless there are other major injuries, the 10-year veteran won’t be asked to do much, and might not even get called up on game day. However, having an experienced player like Bynes in a young inside linebacker room will certainly help.

Analysis: DE Darryl Johnson could give Panthers personnel flexibility

What implications does the trade for DE Darryl Johnson have in the Panthers’ plans moving forward?

The current construction of the Buffalo Bills, just about from up to down, contains numerous beams that were originally established in the Carolina Panthers organization. So many, in fact, they earned the playful nickname of “Carolina North” from the folks down and around in the Tar Heel State.

Well, it now seems as though the Panthers may be on their way to earning themselves a “Buffalo South” moniker.

Ok, maybe not quite yet, but they did syphon some talent back their way from Buffalo, trading for defensive end Darryl Johnson early on Monday afternoon. The deal was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, soon after the team announced the day’s practice and media availability was cancelled.

So, with Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline approaching, this’ll certainly have some implications on what the team ultimately looks like. First off, how would head coach Matt Rhule and his staff try to employ Johnson?

Despite being listed as an end (and standing at a towering 6-foot-6 and 262 pounds), the 2019 seventh-rounder can squeeze into the mold as a linebacker, particularly one that can be utilized on special teams.

Johnson did show promise as a rotational piece for Buffalo in his two campaigns there, amassing a pair of sacks and five quarterback hits while playing in 31 of 32 games. Though it’s his proven capability as a core special teamer, and the potential for more on defense given his traits, that has apparently caught the franchise’s eye.

The Panthers, as stated by general manager Scott Fitterer, highlighted linebacker depth as one of the areas that particularly needed help. Last week’s trade of oft-absent Denzel Perryman knocked the team down to its starting trio of Shaq Thompson, Jermaine Carter Jr. and Haason Reddick ahead of backups Frankie Luvu, Clay Johnston, Julian Stanford and Josh Bynes.

Luvu, along with the starters, are assured their jerseys through Tuesday. That could mean any of the bubbles between Johnston, Stanford and Bynes are in jeopardy of being popped before 4 p.m. ET tomorrow.

Defensive end Christian Miller might be another name to watch as a development of the deal. He would potentially lose out in a pure numbers game, as he’s been solid this summer. But if Fitterer and Rhule decide to roster Johnson at his expense, it’s because he’s the lowest man left on the defensive end totem pole.
