BREAKING: 2024 four-star cornerback commits to LSU

The Tigers have landed their fourth 2024 commitment in Zion Ferguson.

Before the Tigers kicked off their 2022 season on Sunday night against the Florida State Seminoles, they picked up a commitment from a 2024 four-star cornerback.

[autotag]Zion Ferguson[/autotag] is a 6-foot, 160-pound prospect from Loganville, Georgia, where he plays for Grayson High School. The 247Sports Composite ranks Ferguson as the No. 16 corner and No. 169 overall player in 2024.

I have mentioned many times how [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has been building a pipeline all the way from Baton Rouge to Loganville, and this commitment only helps cement that point.

[autotag]Michael Daugherty[/autotag] (2023 four-star safety) and [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag] (2024 four-star athlete) are both from Loganville and play for Grayson. The Rams are off to a hot start to their 2022 campaign as they are 3-0 in three games that were not close. Last year, they lost in the state championship game.

With Ferguson’s commitment, LSU’s four-man 2024 class ranks third in the nation, per the 247Sports Composite. Though it’s early in that cycle, Kelly is off to a fantastic start and could be poised to turn in back-to-back top-10 classes over the next two seasons.

Tigers pick up Crystal Ball for 4-star Georgia athlete

The Tigers picked up a projection for Joseph Stone, a versatile offensive player.

Joseph Stone is a 5-foot-1, 180-pound athlete from Loganville, Georgia, where he plays for Grayson High School. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and the LSU coaching staff have seemingly already established a recruiting pipeline from Loganville to Baton Rouge as [autotag]Michael Daugherty[/autotag] is a current 2023 commit that also plays at Grayson.

Stone is profiled as an athlete. In his film, he plays wide receiver, quarterback and some running back. When he lines up behind the center he is primarily a wildcat quarterback with the coach using that formation as just another opportunity to put the ball in the hands of one of his best players, but there are times where he will drop back and pass as well.

LSU currently has two commits for the class of 2024 in [autotag]Maurice Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag]. Coach Kelly and his staff would love to add another four-star to the list.

Best reactions from the latest recruiting weekend with the Oklahoma Sooners

Check out some of the best reactions from the Oklahoma Sooners’ latest recruiting event.

The Oklahoma Sooners hosted another crop of recruits over the weekend including players from the 2023, 2024, and 2025 recruiting cycles. Players and their families took in all that the University of Oklahoma and its football program had to offer on a beautiful spring day.

Joining the Sooners over the weekend was highly-coveted five-star defensive tackle [autotag]David Hicks[/autotag], the No. 1 defensive lineman in the country according to the On3 Consensus. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine currently has the Sooners ahead of the Texas A&M Aggies by a slight margin. The only Crystal Ball prediction from 247Sports comes from Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong who believes that Hicks will land with the Aggies.

[autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and his crew hosted another highly-touted defensive lineman in the 2023 class in [autotag]Derrick LeBlanc[/autotag] out of Kissimmee, FL. The four-star DL, is the No. 67 player in the 2023 class and the No. 9 defensive lineman. Both On3 and 247Sports believe Florida is the leader to land LeBlanc’s commitment but we’ve seen this coaching staff swoop in and flip players with less time and opportunity.

Oklahoma also hosted a couple of four-star athletes out of the southeast in [autotag]Joseph Stone[/autotag], Jr. and [autotag]Jaylen Mbakwe[/autotag].

With another recruiting visit in the books, let’s look at some of the best reactions from recruits, family, and analysts.

Interest from Tigers ‘means a lot’ to Georgia 4-star with Clemson connections

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a highly-touted athlete in the 2024 recruiting class, who has multiple connections to the Clemson football program.

Every so often, Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) four-star Joseph Stone, Jr. has kept in contact with Clemson wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham and co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Mickey Conn.

“Clemson, they do things a little slow, so for them to actually still be in contact with me, it means a lot,” Stone told The Clemson Insider. “I take that very seriously when I’m talking with them or whenever I’m just in their presence. I take it very seriously because for them to be in contact with me, that shows that they’re interested.”

Stone believes that Clemson views him as an athlete and not at just any single position and that’s because of his relationships with both Grisham and Conn. When he’s camped at Clemson in the past, he’s worked with both the receivers and the defensive backs.

Conn is often in contact with Stone’s head coach at Grayson, Adam Stone. While there are only specific avenues that they can communicate through, Conn will give Carter some feedback to pass along to Stone.

It’s been mentioned before, but Conn previously served as the head coach at Grayson High School and the relationships he’s cultivated in the surrounding area(s) hold a lot of weight on the recruiting trail. Conn now holding a coordinator title is only an added bonus.

“That’s definitely like a big role for him, stepping up,” he said. “That’s definitely like a big connection to have.”

Speaking of stepping up, that’s exactly what Stone did for Grayson across his sophomore campaign.

“When I get on the field, I feel like I’m gonna do what I do,” Stone said. “Me being at quarterback, I felt that this is what I have to do for my team. I never looked at it like a down part or anything, I just went head first.”

Stone felt as if he was a “get it done-type” quarterback. He could pass the ball when it was time to pass, but the majority of the time, if he needed to use his legs, he was able to do that. While quarterback is by no means Stone’s natural position, he showed that he was willing to do whatever it takes to help his team. He also was able to showcase his explosiveness as a playmaker.

He was named first-team All-Region (4-7A) and earned an All-County honorable mention for his efforts this past season.

This offseason, Stone will again train on both sides of the football as a two-way player. At the receiver position, he’s often focused on getting better at all aspects of his game, but one thing he’ll be honing in on this offseason is his finesse on his route running.

“I play a lot of positions, so sometimes in one position you can see it in another position,” he said. “That’s one thing I try never to do, though. That’s one thing that I do want to get better at is playing different positions and being the best in that position. Because not a lot of people can play a lot of positions and be proficient in that position as well.”

Stone views playing multiple positions as a blessing. When he’s on the field, he feels like he has a good sense of what’s gonna happen. Even if he doesn’t know, he feels comfortable because he knows that he can take on anything thrown his way, including playing the quarterback position.

There’s not a lot of players at the next level, whether it be college or the NFL, that demonstrate the same versatility or play the same number of positions that Stone does. His favorite player in the NFL, though, is none other than the former University of Tennessee and current New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara.

“I feel like his balance is crazy, his agility is crazy and his footwork,” Stone said. “One thing he doesn’t have as much as everybody else though is speed. I definitely have to have speed in my game, but that balance and that twitch and that elusiveness that he has, I definitely relate to that.”

At defensive back, Stone is a big fan of former Florida State University and current Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey. He also works out with Clemson freshman cornerback Nate Wiggins, who is a Westlake High School (Atlanta, Ga.) product.

“I definitely study his game a lot, just as far as learning from him because I have that personal relationship with him,” he said.

Whenever Wiggins is in town, Stone said that they try to “lock in” and work out with one another.

“I talk to Nate probably about every week,” Stone added. “See with Nate, we come from the same fire as far as the work ethic. His work ethic is the same as mine. We are always willing to work. He was just telling me to keep my head down and come in and work.”

Stone is hoping to be back in Clemson this spring, where he’ll have a chance to hopefully see Wiggins again.

He was in attendance for two Clemson games this past season. Stone attended the team’s season opener against Georgia at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Sept. 4, 2021, and later made his return visit to The Valley for Clemson’s 30-20 win over Florida State at Memorial Stadium on Oct. 30, 2021.

Now that the 2021 season is over, Stone was able to take a step back and reflect on those gameday visits and their respective atmospheres.

“Now that I’m kind of more into recruiting and I’ve been to a couple of different schools, different game days and looking back on it, Clemson they have a great program,” he said. “Their gameday vibes, I love their gameday vibes at Clemson. It’s like everybody for the Tigers. They love football at Clemson.”

In addition to his interest from Clemson, Stone holds offers from Akron, Arkansas, Boston College, Charlotte, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Memphis, Michigan, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Penn State, Pitt, Purdue, Tennessee, UCF, Utah and Vanderbilt.

Stone (5-11, 180) ranks as the No. 12 athlete and No. 68 overall prospect in the nation for the 2024 recruiting class, per 247Sports’ rankings.

Top Georgia athlete ‘loved’ his experience at Clemson

Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High School had a large contingent of players on hand for Clemson’s 30-20 win over Florida State this past Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Among those in attendance was one of the top athletes in the nation for the 2024 class — Joseph Stone, Jr. He caught up with The Clemson Insider regarding his game-day experience in Death Valley this past weekend.

“I loved my experience at Clemson,” Stone told TCI. “From pulling up to the parking lot, to seeing the Georgia sign on the way home, I enjoyed everything. I would say the highlight is when my former teammate got it (Phil Mafah) and had a great run to put Clemson in a position to score. I’m so glad to be able to see someone where I come from play on a huge stage the way he does.”

Mafah’s 63-yard run during Saturday’s contest was Clemson’s longest play from scrimmage this season.

Stone holds a close relationship with Clemson safeties coach Mickey Conn, who used to be Grayson’s head coach, prior to his stint in Clemson.

With that being said, what type of feedback did Stone get from Clemson and its coaching staff on his visit?

“The feedback I was getting was more of life than football,” he said. “We talked about football, but really the talks were more on joyful moments and things I could do better in the world.”

Stone currently ranks as the No. 12 athlete and No. 68 overall prospect in the class of 2024, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Versatile 4-star Georgia athlete: Clemson ‘my top school’

Joseph Stone is listed as an athlete by the major recruiting services, and an athlete he truly is.

The versatile four-star class of 2024 prospect has played all over the field for Grayson High School (Loganville, Ga.) during his sophomore season this fall. Quarterback is the lone position Stone is playing right now, but he has also seen action at defensive back, slot receiver and outside receiver in addition to returning kicks and even handling the punting duties.

“My season has been kind of wild,” Stone told The Clemson Insider recently. “I’ve had to play multiple positions throughout the season. I’ve had to adjust to a lot of things. I’ve had to help a lot of people. So, my season has definitely been a growing experience so far.”

Plenty of schools have taken notice of Stone’s all-around talent and athletic ability. The 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore has already collected close to 20 offers, including power conference offers from Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Boston College, Indiana, Minnesota and Utah.

Stone could line up on either side of the ball at the next level.

“I have multiple offers for receiver and I have multiple offers for defensive back,” he said, “and I have offers of me just having a relationship with the coach, just being able to talk to them and tell them how I want to play when I get to that level.”

Clemson, of course, doesn’t offer sophomores. But the Tigers have shown interest in Stone, and he has a strong bond with safeties coach Mickey Conn – the former longtime head coach at Grayson.

“Coach Conn is really where my relationship is the most because I go to Grayson High School and he was the head coach at Grayson High School,” Stone said. “So, me and him definitely bond when I’m up there, and we just have that same type of workaholic in us.”

Stone was on campus at Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Camp this past June and worked out at both DB and receiver. The coaches gave him positive feedback about his camp performance while also giving him pointers to help improve his game.

“It was a lot of things they told me that they loved, and it was also some things they told me I could work on, and that’s always what I try to take in the most,” Stone said. “I always want to get better.”

What stands out the most to Stone about Clemson when he looks back on the camp visit?

“One thing that I did take away from the visit is how focused – like, Clemson is a place of very intense focus,” he said. “Clemson is also a fun place, and one thing I do love about Clemson is everything is there. It’s not really a big city, but Clemson has everything you need to be successful and everything that you’re going to want, and everything is just there at Clemson. You really don’t have to go anywhere else, and that’s one thing I love because there’s really no distractions at Clemson.”

Stone has made multiple visits this season, checking out games at schools such as Georgia, Florida State and Michigan, while he plans to visit Florida soon. Returning to Clemson for another visit at some point, he said, is “definitely something I’m trying to do.”

It’s still early in Stone’s recruiting process, though some schools have started to separate themselves from the pack of suitors in his recruitment.

“I am taking everything in and I’m trying to take it slow, but there are some schools that definitely stepped out and some schools that I definitely have a lot of lean towards,” he said.

Clemson is a school that Stone is really high on, if not the highest on, as things presently stand.

“The Tigers actually are my top school right now, although I don’t have an offer from them,” he said. “I already have that relationship built in. He definitely pushes me to be a better person. So, that relationship definitely is there.”

Stone is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 12 athlete and No. 68 overall prospect in the 2024 class.
