A former Bellator welterweight champion is moving back up a division, and he has his first assignment.
[autotag]Douglas Lima[/autotag] (32-11 MMA, 14-7 BMMA) has been booked for a middleweight matchup against [autotag]Costello Van Steenis[/autotag] (14-2 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) when Bellator returns to France this spring. Bellator officials announced the new booking Thursday, as well as a light heavyweight bout between [autotag]Jose Augusto[/autotag] (7-4 MMA, 1-2 BMMA) and [autotag]Simon Biyong[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) for the prelims.
Bellator Paris takes place May 12 at Accor Arena in Paris. The main card will air on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie. The event will be Bellator’s second event in Paris in less than a year.
Lima will be looking to get back on track in what is the roughest stretch of his career. “The Phenom” beat Andrey Koreshkov in a rematch to reclaim the 170-pound title in 2016 and defended it against Lorenz Larkin in 2017. But in early 2018, he lost the belt to Rory MacDonald.
Lima rebounded with finishes of Koreshkov, then became the first fighter to beat Michael Page when he knocked him out at Bellator 221. Later in 2019, he beat MacDonald to get the welterweight title back.
Then his struggles started. He dropped a unanimous decision to then-middleweight champ Gegard Mousasi in a bid to become a two-division titleholder. Then he lost the welterweight title to Yaroslav Amosov in June 2021. Later that year, he dropped a split call to Page in a rematch, and in July 2022, he lost a decision to Jason Jackson for his fourth straight setback.
Van Steenis will be looking to build on back-to-back wins over Fabian Edwards in 2020 and a submission of Kamil Oniszczuk this past October at Bellator 287. Van Steenis, from the Netherlands, is a training partner of Mousasi, who headlines Bellator Paris.
With the additions, the Bellator Paris lineup now includes:
MAIN CARD (Showtime, 4 p.m. ET)
Gegard Mousasi vs. Fabian Edwards
Mansour Barnaoui vs. Sidney Outlaw – lightweight grand prix quarterfinal
Bellator MMA might have an early candidate for its “Fight of the Year.”
Fans of momentum shifts and drama probably will enjoy catching [autotag]Alex Polizzi[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Jose Augusto[/autotag] on replay if they missed it live.
In improbable fashion, Polizzi (9-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) rallied from the brink of defeat at Bellator 276 to defeat his larger Brazilian foe Augusto (7-3 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) by rear-naked choke at the 0:44 mark of Round 3.
Bellator 276 took place at Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo. and aired on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.
The madness really began in Round 2 after a closely-contested Round 1. As Polizzi ducked in for a takedown, Augusto drilled him square in the face with a powerful flying knee. Polizzi dropped to his knees before he staggered upward and ate a barrage of strikes from the rangy Augusto. Nearly out on his feet, Polizzi bounced off the cage and fell to the canvas. Augusto pounced, but Polizzi did just enough for referee Kerry Hatley to allow the contest to continue.
Augusto went for an armbar, covered in the blood that squirted from Polizzi’s face. But Polizzi refused to tap. He not only worked his way out of the bad position, but moved into a favorable one, too. Polizzi mounted Augusto and rained down ground-and-pound until the end of the round.
In Round 3, Polizzi capitalized on an early grappling mistake by Augusto. On the back, Polizzi quickly locked in a rear-naked choke where he secured the tap.
Check out the key highlights of the fight below, or check out the full replay here.
After the fight, Polizzi sported swelling under his right eye and told commentator “Big” John McCarthy he had no recollection of the knee the broadcast showed on replay.
The up-to-the-minute Bellator 276 results include:
Alex Polizzi def. Jose Augusto via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 3, 0:49
Romero Cotton def. Freddy Sandoval via TKO (ground-and-pound) – Round 1, 1:39

[autotag]Anthony Johnson[/autotag] made a successful return to competition on Friday when he beat [autotag]Jose Augusto[/autotag] in the Bellator 258 co-main event.
After his originally planned light heavyweight grand prix semifinal with Yoel Romero fell apart, Johnson (23-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) dispatched of late replacement Augusto (7-3 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) with a second-round knockout win, marking his first triumph in an MMA fight since August 2016.
With the performance, “Rumble” advances to the tournament semifinals, where he’ll meet champion Vadim Nemkov in a title fight.
Check below for the top Twitter reactions to Johnson’s victory over Augusto at Bellator 258.
In the first round, there nearly was a question of whether it was a good idea for Anthony Johnson to come back from retirement.
In the first round, there nearly was a question of whether it was a good idea for [autotag]Anthony Johnson[/autotag] to come back from retirement.
Short-notice opponent [autotag]Jose Augusto[/autotag] (7-3 MMA, 1-1 BMMA) was raining down punches on Johnson (23-6 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) – with his left hand likely broken. But Johnson survived the barrage in his first fight in four years. And 90 seconds into the second round, Johnson knocked Augusto out with a right hand.
Johnson’s win, in his Bellator debut, was in the quarterfinals of the light heavyweight tournament – and put him into the semifinals against champion Vadim Nemkov, meaning he’ll fight for the belt his next time out.
The light heavyweight tournament quarterfinal bout was the Bellator 258 co-main event at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The fight aired on Showtime.
Johnson went after Augusto’s lead leg with early kicks. Then he landed a perfect push kick 45 seconds in and came behind it with a few punches. About two minutes in, Augusto landed a right and seemed to hurt his hand with the punch. He threw a right hand 30 seconds later and pulled it back and winced in pain.
Johnson went after him with authority with punches and kicks against the fence. Johnson unloaded, but somehow Augusto din’t go down and stayed in the fight. And seconds later, Augusto landed a big left hand that wobbled Johnson. He went after him with his one good hand and had him hurt in a big way. He worked for a choke and seemed to have Johnson in trouble. But Johnson survived, Augusto let the pressure off, and a few seconds later Johnson got a takedown and finished the round on top.
The pace slowed in the second round. Both fighters seemed to be recovering from the pace in the first. But 90 seconds in, Johnson threw a right that landed right on the chin. Augusto fell backward to the canvas. Johnson landed one big hammerfist on the canvas before referee Mike Beltran could get in to stop it. And just like that, it was over.

On Friday, Jose Augusto received a call, hopped on a plane, and traveled across continents.
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Not many humans on planet earth would eagerly jump at the opportunity to travel across continents to fight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson on seven days’ notice, but “Gugu” is an exception.
When [autotag]Jose Augusto[/autotag]’s phone rang last Friday and the fight was offered, he didn’t think twice. He quickly accepted, boarded a plane, and arrived at Mohegan Sun for Bellator 258.
“No f*cking way,” Augusto told MMA Junkie on Wednesday, through a translator, when asked if he considered turning down a short-notice fight vs. former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Johnson.
Augusto (7-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) didn’t simply take the fight because as a chance to just show up and collect a check. He’s confident he will win, despite what the oddsmakers say. Augusto views the matchup as favorable and plans to shock the world when the two square off.
“That’s exactly the fight I want,” Augusto said. “He’s a guy that comes forward (with) aggressiveness. I’m also a striker. I can also catch him going forward. I can touch him on his chin and knock him out. This is exactly the fight that I want. There’s no better fighter to knock out than ‘Rumble.'”
“You’re going to see the new generation of MMA. In with the new, out with the old. … The Hall of Famers are going to be pushed out. The new generation is coming in. You’re going to see the upset of the century.”

It’s been a whirlwind year for the 29-year-old light heavyweight. In March 2020, he signed to fight for Dana White’s Contender Series. However, the ongoing global pandemic threw a monkey wrench in his plans when the season was pushed back and visa issues ensued.
From there, Augusto signed with Bellator, but travel papers continued to haunt him. Eventually, Bellator was able to work and get him an athlete exception for a visa. A former heavyweight, Augusto made his promotional and divisional debut April 2 at Bellator 255, when he submitted former UFC fighter Jonathan Wilson in Round 1.
Now scheduled against Johnson, Augusto enters the first round of the Bellator light heavyweight grand prix on the same side as the champion. Should he win Friday, Augusto will fight current titleholder Vadim Nemkov in what will be only his third promotional outing.
“I just have a lot of gratitude to be in this situation,” Augusto said. “It’s been three years since I got to the Pitbull Brothers in Natal, Brazil. I’m already, in my third fight, possibly fighting for the world title. I can only have gratitude in my heart for this situation.”
Bellator 258 takes place Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena. The main card airs on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.
