Kai Asakura stops Juan Archuleta with brutal knee to the body, wins bantamweight title at Rizin 45

Kai Asakura is once again Rizin bantamweight champion.

[autotag]Kai Asakura[/autotag] is Rizin bantamweight champion once again.

The Japanese star was able to get back the title he lost three years ago by defeating [autotag]Juan Archuleta[/autotag] in the co-main event of Sunday’s Rizin 45 event, which took place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Asakura (21-4) dropped Archuleta (29-5) with a brutal knee to the chest in the round and then followed up with ground-and-pound to get the TKO stoppage win.

Prior to the finish, the fight was pretty competitive. Archuleta dropped Asakura early on in the round, and both connected clean throughout the fight.

You can watch the replay of Asakura’s finish in the videos below:

Archuleta missed weight by six pounds at the official weigh-ins on Saturday. He was stripped of the Rizin bantamweight title and the belt was vacated, making Asakura the only fighter eligible to win the belt that night. According to the broadcast, if Archuleta had won, the bout would’ve been considered a no contest due to the weight miss.

Asakura first won the Rizin bantamweight title in August 2020, knocking out Hiromasa Ougikubo. The 30-year-old went on to lose it in December of that same year in a rematch against Kyoji Horiguchi. It took him three years, and a run of 5-1, to win back the Rizin bantamweight title.

Asakura is one of the best fighters in Japan today. He holds notable victories over Archuleta, Horiguchi, Manel Kape, and Ulka Sasaki.

On the other hand, Archuleta saw a four-fight winning streak come to an end. The former Bellator and now Rizn champion had wins over Enrique Barzola, Kim Soo-chul, Naoki Inoue and Hiromasa Ougikubo prior to the defeat. Archuleta is currently a PFL fighter following the purchase of Bellator in November.

Juan Archuleta misses weight for Rizin 45 title bout, stripped of bantamweight title

Juan Archuleta had big ambitions for his holiday trip to Japan, but a big wrench has been thrown into the works of his plan.

[autotag]Juan Archuleta[/autotag] had big ambitions for his holiday trip to Japan, but a big wrench has been thrown into the works of his plan.

Archuleta (29-4) missed weight by about 6 pounds Saturday for his bantamweight title defense against [autotag]Kai Asakura[/autotag] (20-4) at Rizin FF 45, which takes place New Year’s Eve in Saitama, Japan. Former Bellator champion Archuleta has been stripped of the Rizin title due to the weight infraction, and now only Asakura can win the belt in the co-main event.

After the official weigh-ins in Japan, Archuleta told fans and media in attendance that an illness while traveling was the culprit for his large weight miss. And right after that, Asakura said he would talk to his team and make a decision since the weight disparity was so big.

Archuleta’s grand plan was to defend the Rizin bantamweight title against Asakura, then fight Bellator champ Patchy Mix for that title. Archuleta is the only fighter to beat Mix in his career. He won Bellator’s vacant bantamweight title against him in 2020. He subsequently lost it, won Rizin’s belt in a crossover fight, and Mix went on to win Bellator’s interim title, then the full belt in November.

Archuleta never has officially missed weight prior to Saturday, though a fight against Enrique Barzola at Bellator 286 in October 2022 was moved from 135 pounds to a 141-pound contract weight fight during the weigh-in window. After his win over Barzola, Archuleta told MMA Junkie his management team was contacted and told to stop cutting weight, and that a 141-pound fight had been agreed to. Archuleta did not confirm at the time if he was the one struggling to hit the bantamweight limit, or if it was Barzola, or perhaps both, but reiterated that he hadn’t missed weight prior to that.

In the wake of Bellator’s sale to the PFL, Archuleta told MMA Junkie earlier this week he’s not certain what will happen with him, given he had a setup that allowed him to fight for both Bellator and Rizin.

Heading into the Asakura fight, Archuleta has four straight wins, all by decision.

Juan Archuleta wants Patchy Mix rematch if successful in Rizin title defense vs. Kai Asakura

Being the only man to defeat Patchy Mix, Juan Archuleta is hoping to get a shot at his former rival.

[autotag]Juan Archuleta[/autotag] is hoping Bellator’s promise is kept, even though the promotion has been acquired by PFL.

The current Rizin bantamweight champion is still the only man to ever defeat [autotag]Patchy Mix[/autotag], who currently holds the Bellator 135-pound title.

Archuleta defeated Mix in 2020 to win the vacant Bellator bantamweight title. Archuleta since lost the belt, but went on to win Rizin’s, while Mix was able to get back in contention and win the Bellator title by defeating then-champion Sergio Pettis last month.

Archuleta defends his Rizin belt against Kai Asakura this Sunday in the co-main event of Rizin 45 in Japan. If successful, Archuleta would like a crack at the Bellator champ.

“I hope so, that’s something that I’m pushing for,” Archuleta told MMA Junkie. “That’s something I was told was going to happen after I win this fight, so we’re just waiting to see again what Donn Davis, PFL, Mike Kogan and all those guys come up with. We’re waiting.”

Archuleta has felt a lot of uncertainty given the lack of details regarding his future following PFL’s purchase of Bellator last month. He hopes that he’s allowed to continue fighting for Rizin along with Bellator and PFL.

Now on a four-fight win streak and potentially five this Sunday, Archuleta thinks a champion vs. champion fight against Mix makes the most sense.

This position is one Archuleta has worked hard for, as not too long ago he suffered back-to-back defeats in championship fights. He thanks Rizin for his career comeback.

“Those were two title fights that I came off losing, and I was like, ‘Bro, what the hell?'” Archuleta said regarding the resurgence of his career. “… I was sitting in the back thinking (after my KO loss to Stots), ‘Man, what the hell. Two title fight losses, this is hard to come back from. It’s going to be hard to come back and become a champion. What road do I take? What’s available?’ I was just sitting in the sorrow, but then the Barzola fight happened. I felt good.

“(Scott) Coker said, ‘We’re actually having a Rizin vs Bellator fight. Do you want to be part of it?’ I was like, ‘Yes, please.’ So I got that opportunity, came here and they gave me their best guys. Kim Soo-chul, beat him. One of their rising stars, Naoki Inoue, beat him. … I was going to fight Asakura (in July), he pulled out on 10 days’ notice. I fought someone totally different, won the title and all the stress was put behind me. Again, I’m the champion like I know I should be. Going into the prime years of my life now, I’m ready to show that.”

Rizin champ Juan Archuleta explains career uncertainty after PFL-Bellator merger

Rizin champ Juan Archuleta is unsure how the PFL-Bellator merger affects his career in Japan.

PFL’s purchase of Bellator has brought a ton of uncertainty to many fighters signed by both organizations. However, for [autotag]Juan Archuleta[/autotag] the concern is even bigger.

Archuleta is a special case. The MMA veteran has been fighting for Bellator since 2018 and has positioned himself as one of the more well-known names in the promotion, challenging for the Bellator featherweight title and becoming champion at bantamweight. In his latest career chapter, Bellator permitted Archuleta to fight in Japan under the Rizin Fighting Federation banner – a fight promotion that’s worked with Bellator over the years in both exchanging talent and having promotion vs. promotion events.

Archuleta has fought three times for Rizin and won the 135-pound title in July. He defends it on New Year’s Eve against Kai Asakura at Rizin 45 in Japan.

This is where it gets tricky. Bellator is no longer autonomous, as rival promotion PFL recently purchased it in November. Archuleta has no idea how this will impact his status as champion at Rizin and if he’ll be able to continue fighting in Japan.

“I still don’t know,” Archuleta told MMA Junkie regarding his future at Rizin. “I’ve even asked some people like, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ I even asked Don Davis, ‘Hey, man. I was promised the Patchy Mix title (fight). Is that still going on?’ And he was just like, ‘Oh there’s going to be plenty of fights throughout the year, so we’ll see.’ I’m like, ‘Well, that’s pretty gray.’ I don’t know what’s going to happen with that.”

Archuleta is solely focused on defending his Rizin belt, but he does admit that there’s an uneasy feeling given the lack of information surrounding his future.

“Definitely uncomfortable, right?” Archuleta said. “Like you said, this is my living. I was guaranteed three or four fights with Bellator, and now you’re saying there’s not going to be as many cards in Bellator throughout the year? That’s kind of strange.

“You want to take for sure money, at least for me. When you have a job, you can go, ‘OK, this is my salary. I’m going to make this throughout the year. I know for a fact this is what I’m going to make. I might have to work extra, I might have to work less, who knows.’ For me, Rizin is a little more leaning on this way. OK, I’m guaranteed fights over here, but on this side of the river, there’s no telling. You don’t even have a 135 (pound) weight class. If I go up a weight class, am I going to still be active? Am I allowed to be in the tournament? I don’t know. The uncertainty of the unknown is uncomfortable.”

Ideally, Archuleta hopes that PFL honors the existing deal he had with Bellator, meaning he could fight for Rizin while also fighting for the PFL and Bellator brands, which for now will be kept separate.

Given PFL’s message, advertising they’re a more fighter-friendly promotion than the UFC, Archuleta sees this as a possibility.

“A mix of all three is the ideal situation,” Archuleta explained. “Say I win this fight, and they say when they have their Saudi Arabia card, champion vs. champion, and we don’t have a 135-pound weight class, we would like you to fight Patchy. So I fight Patchy, and when is the next Bellator card? ‘Oh, we don’t know yet. Maybe October.’ OK, if it’s October and you need me to fight in October, I’ll fight on that card. But if you don’t know if I’m fighting until October, let me go defend my belt or go for the 145 belt in Rizin.

“You’re talking about being a global combat community, pay it forward for the fighters, let the fighters do more of what they want, this is your opportunity to show that. Show me I can have my career with Rizin as well as PFL and Bellator. This is what you’re saying you do as a promotion. Be different, be a global combat. I’m in a very awesome position to unite three organizations under one roof. No one else is going to be able to do that. So why burn this bridge or give it up just to have me there?”

Juan Archuleta acuses Kai Asakura of ‘running scared’ from original booking ahead of Rizin 45

Juan Archuleta thinks Kai Asakura was avoiding him back in July.

[autotag]Juan Archuleta[/autotag] believes [autotag]Kai Asakura[/autotag] robbed MMA fans earlier this year of what he predicts to be a quality fight.

Archuleta and Asakura were booked to fight in July at Bellator MMA x Rizin 2, but Asakura withdrew from the matchup citing injury. Although the two are now set to fight on New Year’s Eve at Rizin 45, Archuleta feels Asakura is scared to fight him.

“I’m in the best shape of my life, and you don’t have to worry about that because there’s no one running scared,” Archuleta said at the pre-fight press conference. “There’s only one person that’s running scared, that’s you.”

He went on to add,

“This is for you guys. This event and this signing of the contracts, this brings excitement. This brings what you guys deserve, what he left behind last time for you guys, and now Rizin, Sakikibara, everyone in the staff made this happen, because he ran scared last time.”

Archuleta defeated replacement opponent Hiromasa Ougikubo at the Bellator MMA x Rizin 2 event. He won the vacant Rizin bantamweight title, which he defends on Sunday at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

“I’m here to retain my title,” Archuleta said. “I’m here to defeat Kai Asakura and continue to be a great champion. I’m going to continue to give my best performance that you guys truly deserve. This is going to be a battle that’s going to be unprecedented. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity with Kai for a very long time. I believe he’s a great fighter, but I’m just that much better, and I’m going to show fight night that I’m the best bantamweight in the world.”

With Bellator’s future uncertain, Horiguchi makes another appearance for RIZIN, a promotion for which he previously carried a bantamweight title. It’s the first fight for Horiguchi since an inaugural Bellator flyweight title fight in July that ended in a no contest after he was accidentally poked in the eye by Shinryu. The Dec. 31 fight will be a rematch, though this time for RIZIN gold.

After years of asking for crossover fights in RIZIN, Bellator product Archuleta got that in December when he defeated Soo Chul Kim at Bellator x RIZIN 1. Archuleta returned to RIZIN in May when he defeated Naoki Inoue. In July, Archuleta captured RIZIN gold when he defeated the then-champion Ougikubo. His opponent, Asakura is one of the biggest combat sports stars in the region, with wins over Horiguchi, Ougikubo, and others.

Dodson makes his second RIZIN appearance as he continues to jump back and forth over from BKFC. Thus far in RIZIN, Dodson is 2-0 with wins over Hideo Tokoro and Tatsuki Saomoto.
