Jags place OLB Jordan Smith on IR, sign OLB Wyatt Ray

The Jags made roster moves on Tuesday by placing OLB Jordan Smith on IR and filling the available spot with OLB Wyatt Ray.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially placed second-year player Jordan Smith on injured reserve after he went down with a knee injury early last week. They also signed a player to fill his vacant spot on Tuesday by adding fourth-year linebacker Wyatt Ray to the roster.

Ray, 25, entered the league in 2019 as an undrafted player out of Boston College. He spent his rookie season as a practice squad player with various teams but got his first opportunities as a regular-season player with the Tennessee Titans (2020) and Cincinnati Bengals (2021).

While with the Bengals, he recorded 15 tackles and a sack (in 15 games), and while with the Titans, he recorded two tackles (in four games). Ray will also enter his tenure with the Jags with two starts, with one coming through his stints with both aforementioned teams.

As for his collegiate career, Wyatt accumulated 114 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and 17 sacks while with the Boston College Eagles. In his senior season (2018), he was able to earn Third-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors after hitting a career-high of 44 tackles that season.

Wyatt is the grandson of the late legendary singer and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Nat King Cole and nephew of the late Natalie Cole. He’s also a native of Boca Raton, Fla. where he attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

As for Smith, reporters said that the staff was evaluating his right knee when he went down last Monday. Last Thursday, coach Doug Pederson announced that his injury would require surgery, which is expected to keep him out for the season.

Jaguars OLB Jordan Smith to miss full 2022 season with knee injury

Doug Pederson told the media that Jordan Smith will miss the full season and is set for knee surgery after leaving practice early Monday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had two injury scares to start this week on both sides of the ball. The first of those injuries were to second-year outside linebacker Jordan Smith, who had to be helped off the field.

On Tuesday, Jags coach Doug Pederson provided an update on the injury. According to him, Smith sustained a knee injury that will require surgery and will keep him out for the season.

Smith was entering his second season with the Jags after the team traded up last year in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft to take him with the 121st overall pick out of Alabama Birmingham. He spent a majority of the season inactive though he made the final 53-man roster, but did see the field for the Jags’ final two games against the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts.

During his rookie season, Smith only saw the field for 21 defensive snaps and 11 special teams snaps. Needless to say, he was undoubtedly looking forward to seeing the field more in 2022 with a year under his belt as were the fans.

Smith’s injury will make the depth at outside linebacker worth watching heading forward. There doesn’t appear to be a shortage of options to play on the edge behind starter Josh Allen, and probable starter Travon Walker as veteran Dawuane Smoot can help there alongside former first-round pick K’Lavon Chaisson. The Jags also picked up a versatile pass rusher in Arden Key in free agency and have many others who could potentially battle to be a part of the regular season rotation in Rashod Berry, Jamir Jones, and De’Shaan Dixon.

Jags backup QB C.J. Beathard carted off field during OTAs

The Jags No. 2 QB, C.J. Beathard, was carted out of practice early Monday. The Jags also had an injury occur on defense, too, as OLB Jordan Smith had a right leg injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t reported any major injuries during organized team activities, but that may change soon. According to multiple reporters, backup quarterback C.J. Beathard was carted off the field Monday.

Beathard’s injury left him on the ground for several minutes according to those at practice Monday, but eventually, a cart was brought in to take him in for more examination.

If the injury is a serious one, the Jags could be without their most experienced backup quarterback for a while. Beathard, who was drafted in 2017 by the San Francisco 49ers out of Iowa, has started in a total of 12 games and has been in the league longer than any quarterback on the Jags’ roster. He entered this offseason with a 58.7% completion rate (293-of-499) for 3,502 yards, 13 interceptions, and 18 touchdowns.

Beathard’s injury could be a notable one for the Jags as coach Doug Pederson loves to build a strong quarterbacks room overall. However, the team did enter organized team activities with three quarterbacks behind Trevor Lawrence. In addition to Beathard, they have third-year quarterback Jake Luton and undrafted rookie EJ Perry.

There also was an injury on the defensive end on Monday as second-year edge rusher Jordan Smith also left early with a leg injury of some kind. Reporters said he had to be helped off the field and wasn’t able to return.

Jags add a trio from practice squad prior to game vs. Jets, place DE/OLB Jordan Smith on Reserve/COVID-19 list

The Jags added a pair of offensive players and a defensive player from their practice squad Saturday to help out the roster with a game against the Jets coming up.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made multiple transactions on Saturday leading into their game against the New York Jets by elevating three players from their practice squad. Those three players they elevated were defensive back Brandon Rusnak, receiver Josh Hammond, and running back Nathan Cottrell.

Hammond’s elevation comes after the Jags placed receiver Laviska Shenault on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, so it gives the Jags five receivers heading into Sunday’s game, which is the number they had when Shenault was on the active roster. If he sees the field, Hammond would be active for the first time in his career.

As for Cottrell, Sunday’s game will mark the second consecutive one that he’s been elevated as the Jags placed veteran running back Carlos Hyde (concussion) on the injured reserve this week. Hyde missed last Sunday’s game against Houston, too, after sustaining a concussion Week 14 against the Tennessee Titans when he took a big hit from linebacker Derick Roberson.

However, the Jags did sign running back Ryquell Armstead to the active roster this week, but with him not being as familiar with the playbook yet, Cottrell could be active over him against the Jets. Then again, Cottrell may not have to come on the field for offensive purposes as he only was used on special teams last week.

As for Rusnak, he’s only been active for one game this season, and that game was the Jags’ first of the season against Houston. He saw the field for 18 special teams snaps but didn’t register any stats in the process.

The Jags also announced that rookie defensive end and linebacker Jordan Smith was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. The rookie, who was taken in the fourth round of April’s draft has yet to play in a game this season, and that might continue this Sunday.

Once placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, an unvaccinated player must wait 10 days before they can return. However, vaccinated players can return within 48 hours if they register two negative tests that are 24 hours apart.

Jags announce Week 3 inactives: CBs Tre Herndon, CJ Henderson among 5 who will sit

This week, there are several key members from the Jags’ defense who won’t be playing against the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Deandre Hopkins is suiting up for Arizona.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without starting cornerback CJ Henderson and defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris. Both players were ruled questionable on the final injury report after being limited in practice.

The other player who was ruled questionable on Friday, cornerback Tre Herndon, will also be out. This means his 2021 regular season debut will be put off for at least another week after he sprained his MCL during Week 1’s game of the preseason.

Joining the three on the inactives list will be rookie pass-rusher Jordan Smith and rookie defensive lineman Jay Tufele. Both didn’t surface in the status column for the Jags and were full participants Friday. Neither has made an appearance in the regular season (though Smith has been injured) and with both being healthy this week, fans will be questioning the Jags’ mindset when it comes to their selections in the draft.

On the Cardinals’ end, DeAndre Hopkins, who didn’t practice this week due to a rib injury, will suit up. Cornerbacks Byron Murphy and Marco Wilson, who also surfaced as questionable options on Friday, will play as well.

The Cardinals’ full list of inactives are as follows:

  • QB Chris Streveler
  • RB Eno Benjamin
  • CB Tay Gowan
  • CB Luq Barcoo
  • WR Andy Isabella
  • OT Kelvin Beachum
  • OLB Victor Dimukeje

More on their inactives can be found on Cards Wire.

Jags Week 3 final injury report: Henderson, Herndon, and Robertson-Harris ruled questionable

Three players were ruled questionable on Week 3’s final injury report for the Jags. Those players were CB Tre Herndon, CB CJ Henderson, and DL Roy Robertson-Harris.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without two players who’ve started for them in their first two games in cornerback CJ Henderson (groin) and defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris (ankle). Both players were two of the three players ruled questionable on the final injury report for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The only other player to join the two in the status column was veteran corner Tre Herndon (knee), who was also ruled questionable.

Of the three, Henderson could be the most significant blow (if he can’t play) when looking at the receivers the Cardinals have in DeAndre Hopkins (who is a game-time decision), A.J. Green, Christian Kirk, and Rondale Moore. After missing practice on Thursday, the second-year cornerback was able to practice as a limited participant Friday, so he shouldn’t be counted out, though groin injuries are tricky.

If Herndon is able to return, it could be huge for the Jags as he’s one of their most experienced cornerbacks. That could also help with a decision on Henderson, too, if needed. Herndon, who sprained his MCL during Week 1 of the preseason and hasn’t played in the regular season, has practice as a limited participant the last two weeks but has yet to be a full participant in the regular season.

With two cornerbacks ruled questionable, the Jags signed veteran cornerback Nevin Lawson this week. If needed they also have Brandon Rusnak and Lorenzo Burns on their practice squad.

Robertson-Harris surfaced on the injury report after Sunday’s game against Denver. If he can’t go, the Jags have veteran Adam Gotsis as an option as well as fourth-year player Taven Bryan.

Cardinals vs. Jags injury report: Cann, Smith upgraded to full participation

The Jags upgraded four players on the injury report Thursday and A.J. Cann was among them.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had four upgrades occur on their injury report on Thursday. That included guard A.J. Cann (hamstring) and pass-rusher Jordan Smith (knee), who went from being limited on Wednesday to full participation on Thursday.

The other two upgrades were to center Brandon Linder (back) and defensive lineman Jay Tufele (illness), who went from not practicing on Wednesday to being limited on Thursday.

Unfortunately, there was also one player who was downgraded, and that was a starter in cornerback CJ Henderson. He did not practice Thursday after being limited on Wednesday. It appears the Jags have been preparing to not have him, though, as they signed veteran cornerback Nevin Lawson.

Veteran receiver Marvin Jones Jr. also didn’t practice on Thursday, but it was to rest. He led the team in receiving Sunday with six catches for 55 yards and the team probably wants him as close to 100% as possible against the Arizona Cardinals, who have one of the hottest offenses in the NFL.

Of the remaining players on the report, Laviska Shenault Jr. (shoulder) and Lerenetee McCray (hamstring) participated fully for their second straight days, while defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris and cornerback Tre Herndon remained limited.

Jags announce Week 2 inactives: Pass-rushers Jordan Smith, Lerentee McCray ruled OUT

Three of the four players from the Jags’ final injury report have been ruled OUT against Denver. Meanwhile, the Broncos will be without a starting guard.

The list of inactives for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos is almost identical to last weeks. Cornerback Tre Herndon was already ruled out Friday, but the team announced that pass-rushers Jordan Smith and Lerentee McCray will join him after both being ruled questionable.

The three other players who will join them are players who were inactive last week in offensive tackle Walker Little, tight end Jacob Hollister, and defensive tackle Jay Tufele. Of the group, fans were hoping to see the two rookies (Tufele and Little) become active this week, but it appears their debuts will be put on hold.

As for the Broncos, they announced that fourth-year pass-rusher Bradley Chubb (ankle) will be active, giving them their dynamic duo of him and Miller. However, the will be without their starting guard in Graham Glasgow (illness).

The rest of their inactives are as follows:

Week 2 final injury report for Broncos vs. Jaguars

As expected, Tre Herndon will miss Sunday’s game vs. Denver, but two others could potentially join him as pass-rushers Lerentee McCray and Jordan Smith are questionable.

As previously reported, the Jacksonville Jaguars ruled cornerback Tre Herndon out for Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos, but luckily he was the only player who is guaranteed to be inactive. However, pass-rushers Lerentee McCray (hamstring) and Jordan Smith (knee) could join him as they were ruled questionable on the final injury report, while cornerback Tyson Campbell (calf) didn’t appear in the status column.

On the Broncos’ end, starting guard Graham Glasgow (illness) was ruled doubtful. Pass-rusher Bradley Chubb (ankle) and linebacker Jonas Griffith (back) were ruled questionable.

Every other player on their injury report didn’t surface in the status column, including notable Shelby Harris and Noah Fant.

Jaguars inactives for Week 1 game vs. Texans

The Jags’ list of inactives for today’s game in Houston has been released. Seven players were listed, including five on defense and two on offense.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their list of seven inactive players for their regular season opener against the Houston Texans. The full list included five players on defense and just two on offense and is as follows.

Of the listed players, cornerback Tre Herndon (MCL sprain) and edge-rusher Jordan Smith (knee) were on the final injury report Friday.

As for the Texans, they had a list of eight players who were inactive. That included all four players who surfaced in the status column of their injury report from Friday in defensive end Jonathan Greenard, defensive back Lonnie Johnson Jr., linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis, and quarterback Deshaun Watson.
