49ers injury news: Jordan Mason, Deebo Samuel status for Week 7 vs. Chiefs

49ers injury report for Week 7 is out:

The San Francisco 49ers will be a little banged up going into their Week 7 bout with the Kansas City Chiefs, but two of their injured stars will be good to go.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel and running back Jordan Mason were both off the injury report after getting limited practices in to start Week 7. They were both full participants Friday and good to go after suffering injuries in Week 6. Samuel hurt his wrist and Mason hurt his shoulder. Both players wore non-contact jerseys during practice per reporters on site.

The team also officially ruled out wide receiver Jauan Jennings on Friday’s injury report because of a hip injury he suffered in the team’s Week 6 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Kickers Jake Moody and Matthew Wright are also out.

Moody is dealing with a high ankle sprain he sustained back in Week 5 while trying to make a tackle on a kick return. Wright hurt his shoulder the same way. Anders Carlson will be up from the practice squad to handle the kicking duties, although that move hasn’t been made official yet. Wright is set to go on IR.

With Jennings out it could open the door for rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall to see some time on offense. Pearsall is listed as questionable and could be activated off IR for the first time all season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team anticipates activating Pearsall.

He was shot through the chest the weekend before the regular season began and got back on the field Monday when his practice window was opened. Pearsall missed a ton of time in training camp and the preseason because of hamstring and shoulder injuries, so it’s unclear how much of the offense he has down. He could also see time as a punt returner.

Here’s the full injury report:

Out

WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
K Jake Moody (ankle)
K Matthew Wright (shoulder, back)

No real surprises here. All three didn’t practice at all during the week.

Limited participation

DL Kevin Givens (groin)
CB Darrell Luter (pelvis)
WR Ricky Pearsall (chest)

No DL Maliek Collins is a big deal here. He was out to start the week, but a full participant Friday. Givens showed up as a non-participant Thursday after not being on the Wednesday practice report. He was back to limited action Friday.

ESPN suggests 49ers trade with Dolphins for running back help

An interesting idea…

As the 2024 season shakes out, it’s beginning to appear more like a ‘when’ than an ‘if’ the San Francisco 49ers will make a trade to try and improve their roster.

With the trade deadline approaching on Nov. 5, and the 49ers scuffling while dealing with a handful of injuries, there are a ton of routes the club can take to helping its roster.

We highlighted the No. 1 position they need to address, but that’s not what they go after in a piece from ESPN’s Bill Barnwell that includes 12 trades he’d like to see before the deadline.

Instead of addressing a couple of weak spots in their defense, Barnwell would have the 49ers deal a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for running back Jeff Wilson Jr. This is something the Athletic’s Matt Barrows has also discussed.

Running back help for the price a sixth-round pick could make a ton of sense for San Francisco.

When Christian McCaffrey returns is still a question mark, and how healthy he’ll be able to stay once he is back is also a concern. Having depth behind him and Wilson may be valuable down the stretch to help insulate them from injury.

Jordan Mason is also seeing a boatload of carries early in the season thanks in part to the 49ers not having a ton of faith in rookie Isaac Guerendo or veteran fourth-stringer Patrick Taylor. If McCaffrey doesn’t return, having a more solidified backup for Mason would be helpful.

Perhaps the best part of this trade for the 49ers is that it wouldn’t likely hamstring them from a larger deal addressing a bigger need or two ahead of the deadline.

Wilson was an undrafted rookie signing by the 49ers after the 2018 draft. He spent his first four-and-a-half seasons with San Francisco before joining the Dolphins in a trade he requested after the 49ers acquired McCaffrey in a trade.

In seven seasons Wilson has 2,353 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns on 523 carries. He’s averaging 4.5 yards per carry in his career, including 4.8 in 2020 and 5.1 before the trade in 2022.

RB Jordan Mason status unchanged in 49ers’ 2nd Week 7 practice

Jordan Mason is still limited. Here’s the full participation report:

There wasn’t much news on the San Francisco 49ers’ Thursday practice participation report, although there were a couple of minor changes from Wednesday’s session.

Running back Jordan Mason’s status is unchanged while he works through an AC joint sprain in his shoulder. He was limited again Thursday after a limited practice Wednesday. While a full participation would be ideal, no setbacks from a limited session is a good sign. Friday will provide a better look at his potential availability for Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Here’s what Thursday’s participation report looked like:

Did not participate

WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
K Matthew Wright (shoulder, back)
K Jake Moody (ankle)
DT Kevin Givens (groin)

Givens is a new addition here after not showing up on Wednesday’s report. Going from a full participant to a non-participant in the middle of the week generally isn’t a great sign. There’s a chance the 49ers are just being cautious given some of their depth problems up front though. Jennings is working through a hip injury he suffered in Week 6. Any player missing Wednesday and Thursday aren’t typically in a good spot come Sunday.

Limited participation

DT Jordan Elliott (knee)
DT Maliek Collins (knee)

CB Darrell Luter (pelvis)
RB Jordan Mason (shoulder)
S Malik Mustapha (ankle)
WR Deebo Samuel (wrist)

Collins was a non-participant Wednesday, so his return as a limited participant Thursday is a plus. No setbacks across the board puts every player here on a potential track to return Sunday.

Full particiapation

LT Trent Williams (not injury related – resting player)
DE Leonard Floyd (not injury related – resting player)
LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (calf)
WR Ricky Pearsall (chest)
CB Charvarius Ward (knee)

More good news with no setbacks here. Pearsall’s role remains unclear, but back-to-back days of full practice is a great sign.

49ers injury update: RB Jordan Mason in practice to open Week 7

Jordan Mason practiced for the 49ers on Wednesday. Here’s the full, ugly practice report:

The San Francisco 49ers got mixed injury news overall to start their week of practice ahead of a Week 7 showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Perhaps the most positive sign on a crowded practice participation report was the presence of running back Jordan Mason who suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder during the 49ers’ Week 6 victory. It’s unclear whether he’ll be able to play in Sunday’s game, but the fact he was on the practice field as a limited participant to start the week means his arrow is at least pointing in the right direction after a couple extra days off.

Typically the extra time off will benefit a team like the 49ers that needs to get some additional time to get healthy. While the few days off did help Mason and a couple other players, San Francisco is still in a bad way overall from an injury perspective.

11 players were on the Wednesday practice report to open Week 7, although two of them were on veteran rest days. A couple players who weren’t on the injury report for Week 6 showed up on the participation report for Week 7, putting the 49ers in a potentially tough spot entering their Super Bowl rematch.

Here’s what the Wednesday participation report looked like:

Did not participate

DT Maliek Collins (knee)
WR Jauan Jennings (hip)
K Matthew Wright (shoulder, back)
K Jake Moody (ankle)
LT Trent Williams (not injury related – resting player)
DE Leonard Floyd (not injury related – resting player)

The Collins and Jennings absences were unexpected. Neither player came up either time when head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters in the aftermath of Week 6. Collins is the team’s best interior defensive lineman, and Jennings is a reliable third WR for quarterback Brock Purdy. Missing either player could spell disaster for the 49ers on Sunday.

Limited participation

DT Jordan Elliott (knee)
CB Darrell Luter (pelvis)
RB Jordan Mason (shoulder)
S Malik Mustapha (ankle)
WR Deebo Samuel (wrist)

It’s not immediately clear when Samuel hurt his wrist, but a limited session to start the week is a good sign overall. The same goes for Mustapha and Mason who were both hurt in Week 6. Elliott missed the Seahawks game. His presence Wednesday is a plus, especially given Collins’ status.

Full participation

LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (calf)
WR Ricky Pearsall (chest)
CB Charvarius Ward (knee)

Ward missed Week 6 because of a knee bruise and Flannigan-Fowles has missed the last two games with his injury.

Christian McCaffrey return shouldn’t erase 49ers breakout star on offense

Christian McCaffrey should be back at some point, but that shouldn’t mean Jordan Mason disappears.

At some point this season running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to get back on the field for the San Francisco 49ers.

McCaffrey is battling Achilles tendinitis that first cropped up in Week 17 last season. There was some hope he’d return for the season opener, but he missed that game before landing on the injured list where he’s been since Week 2 with no firm timetable for his return.

His absence opened the door for third-year undrafted RB Jordan Mason to enter the fold, and Mason burst through it the same way he’s burst through defenses for 609 rushing yards this season. That’s the second-highest total in the league and a whopping 145 more yards than he had through his first two season combined.

There were some questions about whether he could contribute as an every-down player after his first two seasons. Mason has answered those questions authoritatively in the affirmative through six weeks this season.

While Mason’s role will undoubtedly shrink once the reigning Offensive Player of the Year returns, it can’t be diminished to what it was a season ago when Mason was largely an afterthought in any scenario that wasn’t a blowout while McCaffrey was healthy.

To be clear, McCaffrey should still hold a substantial role in the offense. His presence will cure some of what ails them on that side of the ball with yards-after-catch and scoring touchdowns in the red zone.

However, Mason has proven valuable to the 49ers’ offense with his ability to create yards after contact. That alone is worth having him on the field, but it becomes even more important considering what San Francisco is going to need to accomplish with managing McCaffrey’s tendinitis.

They can’t expect McCaffrey to step onto the field and average more than 21 touches per game. They also can’t get away from their identity as a run-first offense. That means utilizing Mason more often early in games where he’s taking some of the carries off McCaffrey’s plate. It might even mean at some points using McCaffrey as a de facto third-down back to ensure he’s fully healthy come playoff time. There are also some fun things they can do with McCaffrey and Mason on the field together where they’re utilizing McCaffrey’s skillset as a receiver to tie defenses into knots.

Ultimately the 49ers are in a good spot. They don’t need to rush McCaffrey back thanks to Mason’s success, and once he does return they don’t need him to be the workhorse he was last season.

There’s a sweet spot here for San Francisco where they maintain one of the NFL’s best offenses without overdoing McCaffrey’s workload and eliminating Mason from the picture during his breakout season.

Kyle Shanahan confirms injury diagnosis for 49ers RB, team may need new kicker

Some 49ers injury updates for ya.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Friday in a conference call that running back Jordan Mason avoided a major shoulder injury in the 49ers’ win over the Seahawks on Thursday night.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday morning reported Mason is dealing with an AC joint sprain in his shoulder. Shanahan said Mason is officially day-to-day with that sprain. He has a chance to suit up in Week 7 when the 49ers host the Kansas City Chiefs.

That wasn’t the only good news for the 49ers on the injury front. Rookie safety Malik Mustapha, who left Thursday’s game with an ankle injury, is only dealing with a low ankle sprain. He’s day-to-day and could be ready to go after the mini-bye following the Thursday night game. Mustapha posted his first career interception in the first quarter against the Seahawks.

On the other hand, the 49ers may be in search of another kicker.

Matthew Wright was signed to replace Jake Moody after Moody suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 5. On the final kick return of the game Thursday night, Wright was forced to step up and make a tackle. He dislocated his shoulder briefly. The team is still awaiting test results before determining whether he’ll be available in Week 7.

If Wright can’t go in Week 7, the 49ers will need to sign another kicker.

Report: 49ers RB Jordan Mason gets good news on shoulder injury

A Jordan Mason update with good news:

The San Francisco 49ers and running back Jordan Mason may have avoided a disaster.

Mason injured his shoulder in the second quarter of the 49ers’ Week 6 win over the Seattle Seahawks. He returned for the second half, but exited after aggravating the shoulder on the first play of the third quarter. He spent the remainder of the game on the sideline and head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t have much information after the game.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday morning reported the injury is believed to be an AC joint sprain that isn’t considered serious. Mason will undergo further testing Friday.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak with reporters Friday afternoon and may have a further update on the 49ers’ breakout star.

If the 49ers can manage to avoid anything major with Mason it would be a significant win for them given the impact he’s had on their offense. Their run game struggled without him in Seattle, save for rookie RB Isaac Guerendo’s game-sealing 76-yard run. Guerendo would be Mason’s replacement if he’s unable to suit up in Week 7 vs. the Chiefs.

Mason finished Thursday’s game with 73 yards on nine carries. He also ripped off a 38-yard run in the game, marking his longest rush of the season.

After Week 6 he’s up to an NFL-best 609 yards on an NFL-high 114 carries.

Kyle Shanahan’s post-game update on Jordan Mason injury

The 49ers rusher exited the game and returned back to the field for one play before being sidelined for the rest of the game in Seattle.

Through the first two quarters of Thursday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers dished out a heavy dose of Jordan Mason. The 49ers running back rushed the ball eight times and caught one pass against the Seattle Seahawks.

Yet, after capping a 14-yard run in the second quarter, Mason appeared to be injured at the end of the run following a hard fall. Mason left the game, and exited from the sideline to the locker room in Seattle.

Mason later returned to the game after halftime, rushing for eight yards on one carry. After his lone carry of the third quarter, Mason stayed on the sideline for the remainder of the game as he appeared to nurse a shoulder injury.

Following the game, Kyle Shanahan gave a quick update regarding the injury Mason’s suffered in Seattle.

Via @NBCS49ers on Twitter:

Mason finished with 73 yards on nine carries to go along with one catch for nine yards against the Seahawks.

Mason will now get around 10 days off before the 49ers welcome the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to Santa Clara for a highly-anticipated Week 7 tilt.
