5 reasons why the Eagles should roll with the young guys until after the Week 9 bye

With Lane Johnson, DeSean Jackson, and Alshon Jeffery dealing with injuries, the Eagles should play their young guys for the next four weeks.

The Philadelphia Eagles have been snake-bitten by soft tissue injuries again this season, but unlike the 2019 campaign, the NFC East provides the Birds with an opportune time to get healthy, while getting their young guys some much needed playing time against big-time competition.

On Tuesday, NFL.com’s Mike Garafalo reported that Lane Johnson’s second opinion on his ankle provided the Eagles with no real-time solution except rest and rehabilitation.

The Eagles currently have on injured reserve or out, Andre Dillard, T.J. Edwards, Rudy Ford, Dallas Goedert, Josh Perkins, Jason Peters, Isaac Seumalo, and Trevor Williams all out for an extended period of time.

With the news about Johnson and the Eagles unsure about the status of Alshon Jeffery and DeSean Jackson, we’ve provided 5 reasons for why Philadelphia should continue with the makeshift lineup until after the Week 9 bye.

1. Things can’t get any worse

It’s not funny, but with the Eagles missing the majority of their lineup since Week 1, continuing with the status quo won’t hurt and it could end up benefiting the Eagles in the long run.    The Eagles have made critical mistakes with veterans on the field if this truly is a rebuild, there’s no better time than now to start.

Doug Pederson on the prospects of Jordan Mailata remaining the Eagles starter at left tackle

Head coach Doug Pederson told the media on Friday that Jordan Mailata will remain the Eagles starting LT as long as he plays well

[jwplayer poXdD6X7]

The Jordan Mailata experiment at the left tackle position was successful on Sunday night and his audition could turn into a permanent spot along the Eagles offensive line.

On Friday during his final zoom meeting for the week, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson gave Mailata a ringing endorsement and even hinted at the huge athletic lineman staying at left tackle even after Jason Peters returns.

During his debut against the 49ers, Mailata gave up 0 sacks, 0 QB hits, 1 QB hurry allowed, with a 75.2 pass-blocking grade (Lane Johnson 76.4)

Pederson went on to say that he’s hoping Mailata will make the decision for Eagles coaches difficult when Jason Peters is cleared to play.

Eagles snap count vs. 49ers: Breakdown, analysis

Eagles snap count vs. 49ers: Breakdown, analysis

The Philadelphia Eagles played a balanced game on both sides of the ball on Sunday night and it showed in the snap count with the offense running 62 plays and the defense being on the field for 73 total snaps.

***

Quarterback: Carson Wentz 62 snaps, Jalen Hurts 4 snaps

Wentz played all 62 snaps and was joined on the field by Hurts, who was on the field with the Eagles starter for four plays of his own. Wentz hasn’t regained his MVP form, but he put his team in a position to win.

Wentz was 18 of 28 for 193 yards, one touchdown, and one interception while rushing for 37 yards and a touchdown.

Running backs: Miles Sanders 48 snaps, Boston Scott 9 snaps, Adrian Killins 8 snaps, Corey Clement 4 snaps.

The Eagles tried to get Killins and his speed involved and it’ll continue to be a work in progress, while Miles Sanders was nowhere to be found on the Eagles final scoring drive.

Wide Receiver: John Hightower 50 snaps, Greg Ward 48 snaps, Travis Fulgham 37 snaps, Deontay Burnett 19 snaps

The Eagles played with four active wide receivers and that allowed the young players to see some crucial snaps in a prime time scenario. John Hightower led the Eagles with 59 snaps, while the recently added Travis Fulgham logged 37 snaps including the deep TD pass from Carson Wentz.

Offensive line: Jordan Mailata 62 snaps, Nate Herbig 62 snaps, Jason Kelce 62 snaps, Matt Pryor 62 snaps, Lane Johnson 37 snaps, Jack Driscoll 27 snaps

Lane Johnson’s ankle issues bubbled up again and it caused him to be in and out of the lineup.
Jack Driscoll saw 27 snaps at right tackle as well. Jordan played all 62 snaps at left tackle and played well, and the Eagles once again had a young group of offensive linemen get valuable game experience.

Defensive Line: Brandon Graham 56 snaps, Fletcher Cox 50 snaps, Derek Barnett 43 snaps, Javon Hargrave 42 snaps, Malik Jackson 41 snaps, Josh Sweat 27 snaps, Hassan Ridgeway 23 snaps, Genard Avery 16 snaps

Avery only played 16 snaps, but it seemed like he was in on every play. Avery, Josh Sweat, Derek Barnett, Hassan Ridgeway, and Javon Hargrave accounted for sacks, and the Eagles racked up 15 total QB hits, with Avery accumulating five.

Linebackers: Nate Gerry 72 snaps, Duke Riley 47 snaps, T.J. Edwards 18 snaps, Alex Singelton 15 snaps, Shaun Bradley 2 snaps

Gerry appears to still be the apple of Jim Schwartz’s eyes, playing all 72 defensive downs on Sunday night. Singleton earned more playing time and made the play of the game with the pick-six.

Defensive Backs: Rodney McLeod 73 snaps, Jalen Mills 73 snaps, Darius Slay 73 snaps, Marcus Epps 44 snaps, Cre’Von LeBlanc 31 snaps, Nickell Robey-Coleman 30 snaps, K’Von Wallace 27 snaps.

The young rookie, K’Von Wallace got the start at safety and he spent most of the night being baptized by George Kittle. Slay was dominant once again at the cornerback position.

3 keys to success for Jordan Mailata who will start at LT for the Eagles vs 49ers

Jordan Mailata will likely start at left tackle for the Eagles vs. the 49ers

The Jordan Mailata era is upon us here in Philadelphia as the Eagles are putting veteran left tackle, Jason Peters, on injured reserve with a bad toe.

With the news that Peters is out, Les Bowens reported that Jordan Mailata will, in fact, get the call at left tackle ahead of Jack Driscoll.

Here are three keys to success for Mailata if he’s indeed the guy:

1. Get Carson Wentz on the move

Mailata is naturally athletic and rather than have him constantly facing bull-rushers or scheming defensive tackles, slide Wentz out on rollouts and allow Mailata to use his natural athleticism to help keep the Eagles star quarterback safe

Philadelphia Eagles’ LT Andre Dillard left practice after suffering Biceps injury

Andre Dillard suffered Biceps injury during practice

[jwplayer 0yTMxTNo]

The Philadelphia Eagles have dealt a few injuries since training camp kicked off and the team may have suffered another setback, this time to Andre Dillard.

Second-year left tackle Andre Dillard reportedly suffered a biceps injury during practice according to Derrick Gunn.

The report was confirmed by Jeff McLane of The Inquirer.

The seriousness of the injury is still unknown, but the Eagles’ have been using Jordan Mailata at left tackle in his place. Dillard has struggled at times during the camp and the presence of Jason Peters at the right guard could get even bigger if the former Washington State star is forced to miss an extended amount of time.

The Eagles’ could switch Peters back to left tackle and allow Matt Pryor or Jack Driscoll to start at guard.

The Philadelphia Eagles now have no players on the Reserve/Covid-19 list after offensive tackle Jordan Mailata was activated.

Mailata joined Lane Johnson, Nate Gerry, and head coach Doug Pederson on the list two weeks ago and the Eagles now have their full roster as the onfield portion of training camp begins.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson test positive for Covid-19

Pederson shared the news with his players on Sunday night in an unplanned meeting after he was informed of his second positive test.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson has reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus per Tim McManus of ESPN.com.

According to McManus, another Eagles staffer was sent home as well as a precautionary measure, and the Eagles head coach now joins New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, as the only two head coaches to test positive for the virus.

Pederson shared the news with his players on Sunday night in an unplanned meeting after he was informed of his second positive test.

Pederson joins right tackle Lane Johnson as the only two Eagles to test positive thus far.

Pederson must now have two negative tests over a 72-hour time frame before he can be allowed back into team facilities, after which they will be tested daily for at least two weeks.
