Colts grab potential future QB in latest Draft Wire mock

Check out this mock draft from Draft Wire.

Even with two games remaining for the Indianapolis Colts (6-8), there are many already looking forward to the offseason and specifically the 2020 NFL Draft.

With four picks in the first three rounds right now, the Colts have a chance to add some solid talent to the roster. Which direction they go remains to be seen but there is a hope that a new quarterback could be brought in as the potential future.

In Draft Wire’s most recent mock draft following Week 15, the Colts got just that. Here’s a look at the Colts’ selections in the mock:

14. DT Javon Kinlaw, South Carolina

35. QB Jordan Love, Utah State — from WAS

45. WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama

79. CB Deommodore Lenoir, Oregon

Kinlaw is one of the most popular picks for the Colts. Currently at a mid-round value, he has been one of the players being mocked to the Colts so far.

Love would be the exciting draft pick, though. With the struggles of Jacoby Brissett, there is an increasing need to find a future quarterback. Whether the Colts see it that way remains to be seen.

Still, Love has a high ceiling as a quarterback and one that could find success under Frank Reich. He has all of the tools that make him a high-ceiling prospect and one the Colts should target in the draft.

The Alabama wide receiver in Smith is having a strong breakout season. In 12 games, he has 65 receptions for 1200 yards and 13 touchdowns. He’s averaging 18.5 yards per catch.

The draft is still months away and the offseason isn’t even here yet, but this would be a solid start to the incoming rookie class.

Three Keys to a Utah State victory

1. Get excited

It’s no secret just how uninspired and unmotivated USU looked against New Mexico in the regular season finale. Yes, Utah State won the game by double digits, but they didn’t look good for much of it. Thanks to a quick avalanche of mistakes and turnovers by New Mexico, the Aggies posted a dominant second quarter. However, the Aggies got outscored in the second half. In the final quarter, they didn’t score at all and looked like they were just trying to get out of Albuquerque as soon as possible.

Against Kent State, a flat performance could prove costly and end this season on a sour note. Kent State is going to a bowl game for the first time since 2012, and this is just their third bowl appearance in school history. The Golden Flashes are going to be plenty motivated to win this game and snap their winless postseason streak. Coming into the game, they’ve won three in a row, all within one possession. USU has done well in close games themselves this season, so they must take this upset-minded team seriously and come out swinging.

2. Lean heavily on the run game

Gerold Bright has a great opportunity to finish his senior year with a bang. He’s rushed for a solid 827 yards and eight touchdowns through the regular season. Against an extremely poor run defense like Kent State’s, he should be able to have a career game. He may not eclipse his season-high of 179 rush yards against Colorado State, but a monster performance is very much within reach and would put him close to 1,000 yards for the year. If Jaylen Warren is finally healthy enough to consistently help out, both of these backs can do some heavy damage to the Golden Flashes.

3. Contain Dustin Crum

Though Kent State will be hard pressed to win a defensive struggle against the Aggies, they can give themselves an excellent chance at winning in a shootout. QB Dustin Crum fuels Kent State’s offense with a good arm and dangerous rushing ability. He not only leads his team in net rushing yards, he rarely makes mistakes. Crum set a school record by completing over 68 percent of his passes, and his 18:2 touchdown to interception ratio is one of the best in college football. The sheer number of yards he’s responsible for on the season may not look eye-popping, but he’s made every one of them count.

This quarterback plainly has enough offensive balance to keep USU’s defense guessing. The Aggies have gotten burned on deep passes a lot this season, and that trend will continue unless the Aggie D-line can generate some much needed pressure. USU has only gotten a moderate number of sacks this season, coming in at 83rd in the NCAA with 22. It’s time for this defense to step up its game or risk getting an embarrassing loss.

Final Thoughts

USU has significantly improved its program in the last decade, making bowl games eight of the last nine seasons. Kent State is only in a bowl for the third time, having never won in the postseason. USU may look to end this decade on a winning note, but Kent State will be gunning for it extra hard.

This is going to be a close, hard-fought game. Even one or two mistakes could spell doom for either squad. In Jordan Love‘s last collegiate game, I expect him to have a convincing stat line burnished by a strong ground game from Bright and Warren. The Golden Flashes will never go away, but depth will come into play in the fourth quarter and the Aggies will come out and secure another trophy.

Utah State 38 – Kent State 34

2020 NFL mock draft: Updated 3-round projections after Week 15

Check out Luke Easterling’s latest three-round projections for the 2020 NFL draft

Only two weeks remain in the NFL regular season, and in the college football world, bowl season will be kicking off this week.

The battle for the top picks in next year’s draft is coming to a dramatic close, while this year’s top prospects and sleeper hopefuls have one last chance to put out some quality game film for NFL decision-makers.

As we hit the homestretch of another football season, here’s an updated look at how the first three rounds of the 2020 NFL draft could shake out, using the latest updated order:

1. Cincinnati Bengals

Joe Burrow | QB | LSU

The Andy Dalton era needs to end, and the Bengals are in the perfect spot to take his successor. After yet another masterful performance in the SEC title game, Burrow should be locked into this spot, even before he takes home the Heisman Trophy and leads the Bayou Bengals into the College Football Playoff.

2. New York Giants

Chase Young | EDGE | Ohio State

If this scenario holds, the Giants will luck out by landing the best overall prospect in the draft without having to get the No. 1 pick. Young is one of the most dominant pass rushers I’ve ever seen at the college level, and he has the potential to be a dominant player at the next level from Day 1.

3. Miami Dolphins

Tua Tagovailoa | QB | Alabama

After a season-ending hip injury, Tagovailoa is obviously the biggest wild-card in this year’s draft. If he makes a full recovery, Tua still has a fantastic skill set and all the tools to be a franchise quarterback. It’s a big if, but if he’s healthy, he’s still worthy of top-five consideration for a QB-needy team like Miami.

4. Washington Redskins

Andrew Thomas | OT | Georgia

This pick has to be about helping Dwayne Haskins reach his lofty potential. While a premier pass-catcher like Jerry Jeudy would be tempting, Haskins already has a stellar rapport with former college teammate Terry McLaurin. The bigger need, and the better pick, is a franchise left tackle like Thomas.

5. Detroit Lions

Derrick Brown | DL | Auburn

This defense needs a dominant, disruptive force in the trenches to build around, whether that’s on the edge or along the interior. In this scenario, Brown is the best combination of value, need and fit. He’s got rare athleticism for his size, and all the strength and power you’d expect.

6. Arizona Cardinals

Jerry Jeudy | WR | Alabama

Offensive tackle is the bigger need, but I would be shocked if the Cardinals passed on the chance to give Kyler Murray an elite pass-catcher like Jeudy, should he fall into their lap. His combination of explosiveness and polish will make him an instant sensation at the next level, and a steal outside the top five.

7. New York Jets

Tristan Wirfs | OT | Iowa

Sam Darnold needs more help up front, and both tackle spots especially need attention. If the draft plays out this way, the Jets would land one of this year’s best prospects at the position, getting a powerful blocker in Wirfs who can be an immediate upgrade on either side.

8. Jacksonville Jaguars

Jeff Okudah | CB | Ohio State

After trading one of the NFL’s best corners, the Jags need to replace Jalen Ramsey with one of their multiple first-round picks in this draft. They luck out here, as this year’s top cover man falls to them at this pick. Okudah is a complete player who can make an immediate impact at a premium position of need.

9. Los Angeles Chargers

Justin Herbert | QB | Oregon

The Philip Rivers era is limping to a halt, so it’s time for the Bolts to find a successor for the future Hall of Famer. Herbert went back to school to polish his skill set, and while he’s still somewhat inconsistent, he’s got more than enough tools to work with, and he should end up being a top-10 pick.

10. Denver Broncos

Isaiah Simmons | LB | Clemson

This defense needs a three-down playmaker at the second level, and this pick would be the perfect fit. Simmons is a rare athlete and a versatile defender who can matchup with the best player on any offense, making him the kind of guy opposing offenses have to scheme for on a weekly basis.

2020 NFL draft: 4 potential quarterback prospects for Panthers

Here are a few 2020 QB prospects to watch.

The Panthers will be playing their third-string quarterback this week when rookie Will Grier gets his first start against the Colts. It’s a reminder of just how important depth at QB is. We don’t know if Cam Newton will be back next year or not. Either way, Carolina should consider adding another quarterback in the draft.

Here are a few 2020 QB prospects to watch.

Justin Herbert, Oregon (6-foot-6, 238 pounds)

The leader of the Pac-12 champions has been a polarizing figure this season and there’s a wide range of opinions on Herbert among draft analysts. Since guys like Joe Burrow will be out of reach, he may be the best option available when the Panthers are on the clock with their first pick. The Rose Bowl and the Senior Bowl (if he goes) could be very telling and a huge opportunity for Herbert to prove he belongs in the first round.

Why Chargers need to draft quarterback in Round 1 of 2020 NFL draft

The time is now for the Los Angeles Chargers to find their future face of the franchise.

The Los Angeles Chargers have a difficult decision to make when the 2019 regular season is over. The franchise needs to decide whether it’s time to move on from quarterback Philip Rivers or bring him back for Year 17.

Based on how this season has gone, you can make the argument that it’s time to separate themselves from the 38-year old because it hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows when it’s come to his play, as he’s thrown 15 interceptions.

But you can also make the argument that some of the woes fall on the shoulders of the inconsistent play along the offensive line.

Regardless of the direction the Chargers go with Rivers; they can’t hold off on grabbing the potential face of the franchise.

Many fans want to see Rivers play in the new stadium in 2020, and it wouldn’t be all that surprising if the team does, too. In that scenario, Rivers returns on what is likely a one-year deal with some sort of second-year option.

We’re looking at Rivers playing for one season with his contract expiring after the 2020 campaign, and so will his backup Tyrod Taylor, whose contract is up at the same time.

So why would the Chargers go into the 2021 offseason with no options behind them at the quarterback?

There’s rookie Easton Stick, but it’s believed that he will serve as a long term backup or even as trade bait. If they chose to draft one in 2021 and throw him in the fire, it’s likely to be a disaster. And with how the roster is set up, they’re built to win.

Taking a quarterback in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft would give him a year to sit under Rivers and take over with some NFL experience under his belt the following season.

Well, what if Los Angeles feels like Rivers isn’t in their plans for next season? Or, Rivers decides to hang up the cleats?

Taylor is the likely the Day 1 starter. That would be the ideal scenario as their offensive philosophy will shift around a mobile quarterback, which is something the Chargers have wanted to do since coach Anthony Lynn came on board.

Taylor is the perfect bridge quarterback since he has experience and the traits that he would be able to pass on to whoever the rookie quarterback is when he takes the throne.

Now, onto the draft and what they should do.

The Chargers will be picking anywhere between No. 10 and 15, which means they will likely have options such as Justin Herbert, Jordan Love, Jalen Hurts and possibly Tua Tagovailoa available. All four mentioned are not perfect, but they have the tools to become a franchise quarterback eventually with some polish.

Waiting until the second round to acquire a quarterback and electing to choose another position of need like offensive tackle in Round 1 should not be in the picture. If a quarterback is worth a second-round pick, the area is so vital that it makes him worth a first-round selection.

Luckily, the offensive tackle class has the potential to be one of the greatest in recent years and you can find Day 1 starters in Round 2 with Josh Jones, Prince Tega Wanogho, Mekhi Bekton, Trey Adams or Alex Leatherwood.

For fans, the offensive tackle position is a pressing need because Rivers thrives when he has a clean pocket. But success in a rookie’s first season, whether that be at left tackle or right tackle, is hit or miss so you can’t bank on a first rounder being the solution.

Like offensive coordinator, Shane Steichen said, “A rookie playing tackle in this league. I don’t care who you are, first-round pick or whatever it is, it’s tough.”

If the Chargers wait until 2021 to draft a quarterback, they’re putting themselves in the wrong spot. Not only will they likely have to throw whoever that is in the fire, but the quarterback class isn’t as superior as this year’s.

It has two options at the top in Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, but they are likely to go in the top-10 and who’s to say Los Angeles will be in this spot again since they’re probably going to have more success next season, putting them beyond the 20’s.

The bottom line is that whether or not Rivers is in the plans for 2020, they can’t play the waiting game with the position anymore. The team is going to be in a good spot to draft a talented quarterback, and they must seize that moment.

Of course the offensive line needs to be addressed immediately, but they can afford to do so later on and plus, we don’t know if they’re going to address it in free agency or if they’re going to bank on the development of the younger players like Trent Scott and Trey Pipkins.

The last time the Chargers drafted a quarterback in the first-round was in 2004. With there being a few prospects that have the makings of a franchise quarterback, the team needs to strongly consider ending that drought in 2020.

Potential Georgia football target declares for NFL Draft, limiting Bulldogs’ options

A potential Georgia football target has declared for the NFL Draft, limiting the Dawgs’ options on transfer quarterbacks

With junior Georgia football quarterback Jake Fromm’s NFL Draft decision looming, the Bulldogs must prepare as if the Warner Robbins native is leaving the Classic City.

Though nothing is official on Fromm’s departure as of now, offensive coordinator James Coley will navigate the waters of the Class of 2020 and the transfer market.

Tuesday, we told you the Bulldogs’ best option to replace Fromm next season was through the portal, with Jordan Love, D’Eriq King and possibly even John Rhys Plumlee.

Now, it appears one of those top three options is already off the board, with Love announcing he will declare for the draft instead of transferring from of Utah State.

What does this mean? Well, for starters, the Bulldogs have already lost another transfer option on the market, now that Joey Gatewood has chosen Kentucky and Love the NFL Draft.

It appears D’Eriq King is the only realistic option currently in the portal for Georgia, but that could change in the coming weeks. Hiring former Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke in Athens can only increase the chances of landing Plumlee, but as of now, he’s currently not in the portal.

It’s probably still a long shot, but Plumlee leaving Oxford for a full-ride offer at Georgia with his former coach isn’t too far fetched of an idea. Factor in that each school’s baseball programs are pretty comparable and it is easy to see why this move would make sense.

The Bulldogs finished No. 2 in the SEC regular season standings, while the Rebels were the conference runner-up in Hoover. Each team made the NCAA Tournament and hosted a regional, so it’s not like one of these teams is far superior to the other on the diamond. In addition, the Dawgs could really use another bat in their lineup, to go along with all of the solid pitching in Athens.

Plumlee batted .395 overall during his high school baseball career, going .455 during junior year and .411 in senior year, though he only hit 7 home runs. The speedy two-sport athlete may not be a power hitter, but he sure is good at getting on base.

So yeah, that’s where we’re currently at. King is officially up for grabs on the transfer market, while Plumlee could enter the portal and wind up in Athens, where he was committed until the last minute this past year.

Remember, we are not saying the Ole Miss quarterback will enter the portal or possibly even consider it, but if he does, we like the Dawgs’ chances. Of course, the Plumlee stuff is all just speculation.

Potential Dolphins QB target declares for the 2020 NFL Draft

A potential 1st-round quarterback target for the Miami Dolphins has just declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Miami Dolphins’ search for a franchise quarterback isn’t going to be a dilemma that’s easily solved. If the vision some fans had of the team of an 0-16 season were realized, that wouldn’t be the case — the Dolphins could simply draft LSU quarterback Joe Burrow with the 1st overall selection and move on with their lives. But Miami isn’t on pace for 0-16 and they certainly aren’t on pace to finish with the worst record in football. That distinction goes to the Cincinnati Bengals, who are currently 1-12 and have a 2 game lead on the Dolphins in the draft order.

Which means the Dolphins search will take them elsewhere. That search may include Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, although Tagovailoa’s recently dislocated hip may prompt the Dolphins to search for alternatives for fear that durability will be an issue for the gifted Crimson Tide quarterback.

One of the few other quarterback prospects considered a viable first round selection is Utah State quarterback Jordan Love, who yesterday announced that he would be foregoing his final season of eligibility and entering the 2020 NFL Draft.

Love has elite physical tools and a golden arm — he’ll make the kind of jaw dropping throws that only the best of the best can make at the quarterback position. But Love also regressed in 2019, looking lost at times in reading coverage and taking a step backwards in nearly every statistical category possible.

For Miami, the team’s emphasis on player development is critical. We’ve seen the Dolphins, in a span of 13 games, convert cornerback Nik Needham from someone who was abused in coverage during the preseason to one of Miami’s most consistent performers as a UDFA rookie. Miami converted fellow UDFA Preston Williams into the team’s lead receiver through eight games. Wide receiver DeVante Parker is playing the best football of his career under the watchful eye of Brian Flores and company.

The point is simple: if there were a team that would be invested in a franchise quarterback who is a bit more of a “project” or a developmental talent, the Dolphins are as strong a candidate that exists.

From here, look for Love to receive an invitation to the 2020 Senior Bowl. According to The Athletic’s Dane Brugler, Love is expected to receive his bachelor’s degree later this month — making him eligible for the game.

Utah State QB Jordan Love declares for 2020 NFL draft

Utah State quarterback Jordan Love has declared for the 2020 NFL draft.

The redshirt junior announced his decision through Twitter on Tuesday night.

Love is coming off of a bit of a disappointing season, throwing 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions, the latter stat tying for the highest total in the FBS. He threw for 3,085 yards with a 60.6 completion percentage and led the Aggies to a 7-5 record in the regular season. Utah State will play in the Frisco Bowl against Kent State on Dec. 20.

Love started 6 games in his redshirt freshman year in 2017 and was Utah State’s full-time starter for the past two seasons. He started making waves in draft circles last year, when he threw for 32 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions with 3,567 passing yards and a 64.0 completion percentage. He led the Aggies to an 11-2 record in 2018.

“Playing for the Aggies has been a dream come true,” Love stated in his announcement. “And with that being said, I am ready to chase my next dream. After much prayer, consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided to forgo my senior year at Utah State and enter the 2020 NFL draft. I knew from the first time I put on a helmet and shoulder pads that I wanted to play in the NFL and am excited to begin that journey now.”

Love regressed from a statistical standpoint this year, but there is still plenty to like in his game. A strong-armed passer who delivers rockets with ease, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound quarterback has shown the capability to make any throw on the field. He has flashed impressive touch and anticipation, and he has the athleticism to maneuver the pocket and pick up yards with his feet.

Though his decision-making and ability to look past his first read can use some work, Love has the physical tools to be a capable starting quarterback at the next level. He will likely be selected at some point in the first two rounds, with a chance to sneak into the first round if a team is willing to bet on his upside.

2020 NFL mock draft: 3-round projections heading into Week 15

Luke Easterling updates his three-round projections for the 2020 NFL draft

We’ve only got three weeks of NFL regular season action left in 2019, and with conference title games in the books, bowl season lies ahead in the college football ranks.

That means top prospects and sleeper hopefuls are putting the finishing touches on their film before heading into draft preparation, while the NFL’s bottom-feeders are preparing for the offseason while their more successful counterparts keep making playoff pushes.

With Week 14 action in the books, here’s my latest stab at projecting the first three rounds of the 2020 NFL draft, using the latest updated order.

3. Washington Redskins

Jerry Jeudy | WR | Alabama

Offensive tackle is a strong possibility here, but whatever Washington does with this pick, it has to be about helping Dwayne Haskins. There are attractive options both in the trenches and at the skill positions, but Jeudy’s polish and pro-ready skill set will allow him to make the most immediate impact.

Andrew Thomas | OT | Georgia

If Kyler Murray is going to reach his full potential, he’ll need a franchise left tackle to grow with him. This scenario plays out perfectly for the Cardinals, as they get their pick of a deep tackle class. Thomas is polished and battle-tested, making him the best option here.

8. Atlanta Falcons

A.J. Epenesa | EDGE | Iowa

This defense is desperate to improve their completely absent pass rush, both on the edge and inside. This pick has to be used to that end, and the value points to grabbing a versatile rusher like Epenesa, who has the size and skill set to line up anywhere on the defensive line and get after the quarterback.

Could Georgia football be in the market for a transfer quarterback?

Could the Georgia Bulldogs be in the market for a transfer quarterback?

The Georgia Bulldogs are off to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, after finishing the season 11-2, with an SEC Championship Game loss to LSU.

Though junior quarterback Jake Fromm could very well return for his senior year in Athens, there’s always the possibility he leaves for the NFL and does not come back.

What would that mean for the Bulldogs? Well, Georgia currently has 2020 four-star quarterback Carson Beck committed to join the program, with 2019 four-star dual-threat Dwan Mathis sliding under the radar after surgery to remove a brain cyst this offseason. In addition, the Dawgs gained another transfer in Nevada freshman Austin Kirksey, who will walk on next year in Athens.

That’s three talented quarterbacks with little college football experience and still a lot of question marks. Say Fromm leaves and that is the quarterback room you are walking into. The Dawgs would essentially have to land a transfer off the market, which is what we’ll now discuss.

Joey Gatewood is already off the board and bound for Kentucky, so here are Georgia’s top options as of now.

  • Utah State – Jordan Love
  • Houston – D’Eriq King
  • Ole Miss- John Rhys Plumlee* (Not currently in the portal)

While Plumlee has yet to enter the portal, Georgia bringing in former Ole Miss coach Matt Luke will certainly strengthen the depth of rumors on Plumlee to Athens.

Man, would that be nice.

As of right now, Fromm has yet to declare for the NFL Draft or announce his intentions of staying in Athens, but he is being graded as a second-night draft pick by multiple highly respected analysts.

Would that be good enough for the three-time SEC East Champion, who has led the Dawgs to three-straight New Year’s Six Bowls? Time will tell.

The rumor mill will keep on going and the message boards rumbling, but Fromm is still the Bulldogs’ quarterback. Of course, things could all change as soon as tomorrow, but for now, this is where Georgia stands.

To add more traction to the possibility of gaining a transfer quarterback, Sports Illustrated’s Brooks Austin is reporting that King and Love recently followed Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley on Twitter.

Remember, nothing is confirmed at the moment, but there’s a pretty good chance the Dawgs land one of the three guys listed above if Fromm were to leave for the draft.

Make sure to follow along with UGA Wire throughout the week as we update you on the latest in everything Georgia football.
