Callout Collection: Who UFC on ESPN 10 winners want next – and how likely they’ll get them

Merab Dvalishvili and Mariya Agapova were among those who name-dropped their preferred next opponents at UFC on ESPN 10 in Las Vegas.

Earning wins in the UFC is certainly no easy task, but what comes next is often even more important: the post-fight callout.

So after Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 10 event in Las Vegas, who took advantage of their time on the mic? See below for this week’s Callout Collection – and just how realistic each one is.

* * * * *

First up, let’s take a look at the preliminary card …

Merab Dvalishvili

Wants to fight: [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag]

The callout: “Big respect for Sean O’Malley, but I want to fight next with him. So let’s make this happen, I’m ready. Let’s show everyone a good, real fight.”

The reality: There are so many options available for the UFC’s matchmakers at bantamweight, and with O’Malley continuing his relentless rise up the UFC’s 135-pound division with a victory over Eddie Wineland at UFC 250, the choice of his next opponent will be the topic of much speculation. The UFC could decide to throw him in with top-10 opposition next, but with a host of contenders already jostling for position at the sharp end of the division, they may opt to slow-play “The Suga Show” and give him someone a little lower down the pecking order. That may open up the opportunity for [autotag]Merab Dvalishvili[/autotag], whose ambitions at 135 are as high as O’Malley’s.

The fight would offer a fascinating clash of styles, with O’Malley’s striking skills going up against Dvalishvili’s seasoned grappling credentials. It would act as an acid test for both men, but it’s a risky fight, especially given Dvalishvili’s unranked status. Is it a risk worth taking now, or should the UFC matchmakers build both men with a view to the pair meeting in a battle of ranked contenders further down the line? I’d probably side with the latter approach.

Next up: Dominant debutant issues a challenge, but should she be aiming higher?

UFC Fight Night 172: Jordan Espinosa vs. Mark De La Rosa odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 172 fight between Jordan Espinosa and Mark De La Rosa , with MMA betting odds, picks, tips and bets.

Jordan Espinosa and Mark De La Rosa lock horns in a bantamweight fight on the main card at UFC Fight Night 172 Saturday at the UFC’s Apex Facility in Las Vegas. The prelims kick off at 6 p.m. ET, followed by the main card set for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+.

Espinosa (14-7) enters as a moderate favorite over De La Rosa (11-4) in the first fight on the main card.

Espinosa holds a 4 1/2-inch reach advantage, and will look to add to his already sizable significant strikes landed per minute advantage. He leads that department 4.25 to 3.28 over De La Rosa, and has an even larger advantage in significant strike-accuracy percentage at 55.97 to 36.25. Espinosa isn’t a one-trick pony, though, and can grapple with the best of them, too. His numbers on the canvas are slightly better than what MDLR brings to the table.

Espinosa is hungry to snap a two-bout losing streak, as he was submitted in the first round against both Matt Schnell (Aug. 3, 2019) and Alex Perez (Jan. 25, 2020). However, the danger isn’t quite as high against De La Rosa, although you have to figure the challenger will certainly try his best to get the favorite to the mat.

De La Rosa is on a slide of his own, dropping his past three fights. “The Bumblebee” was knocked out in Round 2 last time out against Raulian Paiva Feb. 15, 2020, following a pair of unanimous-decision setbacks to Kai Kara-France Aug. 31, 2019, and Alex Perez March 30, 2019. De La Rosa’s last win was Nov. 10, 2018, a split-decision victory over Joby Sanchez. Three of De La Rosa’s past four fights have ended up going the distance, while Espinosa has finished inside the distance in three of his past four.

Jordan Espinosa vs. Mark De La Rosa betting odds

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Thursday, June 11 at 5:45 a.m. ET.

ESPINOSA (-164) is the favorite, and you have to like him in this bout mainly because of his reach advantage and potential to finish with one punch. He makes his punches count, and De La Rosa doesn’t have the kind of ground game which would be a problem for the favorite. Based upon Espinosa’s significant strikes advantage and his work on the mat, taking NO (+170): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a strong value.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on Fili (-164) returns a profit of just 6.10, while a winning $10 bet on De La Rosa (+135) fetches a profit of $13.50. A $10 play on NO (+170) for “Will the fight go the distance?” returns a profit of $17.

(Editor’s note: The new main card fight between Merab Dvalishvili and late replacement Gustavo Lopez happened too late to be included in our reader picks or staff members’ picks, so is not included here.)

The UFC is back Saturday with another event on its home turf.

UFC on ESPN 10 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

[lawrence-related id=526336,526343,526178]

In the main event, recent women’s flyweight title challenger [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag] (15-7 MMA, 5-6 UFC) takes on [autotag]Cynthia Calvillo[/autotag] (8-1-1 MMA, 5-1-1 UFC). The oddsmakers have the fight as a virtual pick’em. But the picks from our 14 editors, writers, videographers and radio hosts have Eye with a fairly sizable 9-5 lead.

In the co-main event, [autotag]Karl Roberson[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) takes on [autotag]Marvin Vettori[/autotag] (14-3-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) in a middleweight bout that was supposed to go down in May in Jacksonville, Fla., before Roberson was pulled after a hard weight cut. There’s bad blood now, and Vettori is more than a 2-1 favorite. He’s also got a big 12-2 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] (20-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC) meets [autotag]Charles Jourdain[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at featherweight. Fili is the third biggest favorite on the card, and he’s also got an 11-3 picks lead.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Jordan Espinosa[/autotag] (14-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) fights [autotag]Mark De La Rosa[/autotag] (11-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) in a bantamweight bout. Espinosa is a slight favorite, but he’s got a major 12-2 picks lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Calvillo (55 percent), Vettori (71 percent), Fili (75 percent) and Espinosa (60 percent) are the choices.

Jordan Espinosa may have found a way to use back-to-back submission losses to his advantage

With back-to-back losses, Jordan Espinosa has pressure on him heading into Saturday – but is finding a way to make that work for him.

With back-to-back losses, [autotag]Jordan Espinosa[/autotag] has a little pressure on him heading into Saturday.

But his mindset is to not think about things much differently than normal, and in some ways he even wonders if the consecutive setbacks might work to his advantage.

Espinosa (14-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) meets Mark De La Rosa (11-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) in a bantamweight bout at UFC on ESPN 10, which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Because Espinosa’s most recent two losses were first-round submissions to Matt Schnell and Alex Perez, De La Rosa doesn’t have as much to go off of, Espinosa reasons.

“The silver lining with having the two losses in a row and them being first-round submissions is that I didn’t get to really show what I was capable of,” Espinosa said during a Thursday virtual media day ahead of the event. “My opponent and my future opponents probably think I suck. They haven’t gotten to see anything in my game except for maybe my lack of jiu-jitsu defense.

“But that’s good for me. I still have a lot that I can show and I feel like that keeps me dangerous, in a sense. I always feel like my job’s never secure. I’m never super comfortable. I always treat the fights the same. I’m coming into this fight like it’s my final fight in the UFC.”

[lawrence-related id=526178,525486]

Espinosa, who’s based in Albuquerque, N.M., said he made a trip to Missouri to work with UFC welterweight James Krause and his team for the last portion of his training camp, in part because the stay-at-home orders there were less stringent than the ones in New Mexico. He said that change of pace in training should pay off for him Saturday.

But he’s also fighting an opponent in De La Rosa that he was booked to meet in November 2018 for his UFC debut before he was forced out with a knee injury. Consequently, De La Rosa has been on Espinosa’s radar for a while. And so, too, will the environment on fight night seem familiar to him since fighting in front of no fans at the UFC Apex will be similar to his pair of appearances on Dana White’s Contender Series.

“I had a training camp for (De La Rosa) a year and a half ago,” Espinosa said. “We’ve had some of the same opponents, and I’m very familiar with his style. Honestly, it was an easy transition.

“Compared to most of the other guys on the card, it’s going to be more familiar for me. I fought on the Contender Series twice. The second time, I was so calm. Everything felt really relaxed and I was so comfortable. I expect this to go the same.”

De La Rosa has had struggles of his own. He’s on a three-fight skid and has been bouncing around between flyweight and bantamweight. He’s in as much of a must-win situation as Espinosa is, if not more.

The oddsmakers have Espinosa a slight favorite, and if he was searching for a reason why he thinks De La Rosa is up against someone he hasn’t seen before.

“He hasn’t really fought guys that move like me,” Espinosa said. “… I’m a lot more mobile. I’m a lot more dynamic. I get in and out. He hasn’t fought anyone like that. He kind of fights the opposite – he’ll pressure and bite down and throw. He has good jiu-jitsu, (and) not so great wrestling. I’m strong in my wrestling. It doesn’t seem like he has much power. But he’s tough. He’s willing to take a shot to give a few. But I think where my strengths are, if I want to take him to the ground, I can and if I want to keep it on the feet and frustrate him, I think I can do that, too.”
