3 players who hurt their stock in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game

These three players were disappointing in Thursday’s game

Thursday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Game saw the return of football after a long offseason as the Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets 21-16. Both teams didn’t play many of their starters electing to play younger players and those that are on the fringe of making the roster. Some drastically increased their play with solid play and showed coaches things they were hoping to see in camp and the preseason.

However, there were also some players that make you feel like they should look elsewhere in terms of who makes the roster at that position. Three players stood out ad the most disappointing during Thursday’s preseason game.

Podcast: Breaking down the Browns’ defensive tackle room

How does the outlook of the position currently look?

The glaring weakness of the Cleveland Browns defense in 2022 was the defensive tackle room. They got very little production from the position and clearly, Andrew Berry knew he had to focus on improving the group. Adding Dalvin Tomlinson was a huge upgrade over last year though he remains the only proven player in the room.

Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz seems to think that rookie Siaki Ika will be an impactful player for the team. They added a wildcard in Maurice Hurst who if healthy can be a solid player. You can listen to this week’s episode by clicking here or watch the episode on YouTube by clicking here.

53-man roster prediction after Jordan Elliott and Harrison Bryant rework deals

How will the reworked deals of Harrison Bryant and Jordan Elliott impact the Browns’ final 53-man roster?

The Cleveland Browns reworked the contracts of two of their 2020 draft class alumni. Both tight end Harrison Bryant and defensive tackle Jordan Elliott upped their guaranteed money while lowering their base salary (with more incentives involved as well), all but guaranteeing their roster spot on the final 53-man roster.

How does this impact the roster elsewhere? It guarantees the Browns will roster three tight ends, and leaves one less defensive tackle position for the likes of Perrion Winfrey, Maurice Hurst, and Trysten Hill to fight over.

Here is a final 53-man roster prediction after Bryant and Elliott look to have locked themselves into their spot.

Restructured deals of Harrison Bryant, Jordan Elliott make them roster locks

They’ll be back in 2023.

The Cleveland Browns and two members of their 2020 draft class struck deals to restructure their original rookie deals. Both tight end Harrison Bryant and defensive tackle Jordan Elliott elected to take a lower base salary to add guaranteed money back into their contracts. Both will still be free agents at the end of the 2023 season, but what they did do was guarantee themselves a roster spot this year.

Before these new deals, neither Bryant nor Elliott had any guaranteed money left on their contracts. By trading less money for a far larger guaranteed sum, Elliott and Bryant are playing the long game. While the guaranteed money (just over $1 million to both) is not exponential and could still be eaten by the Browns to move on, that move now seems quite unlikely.

The two fourth-year players now have the opportunity to earn up to $4 million in incentives as well should their play back up a higher payday on the field.

While their fate beyond their fourth season in 2023 with the Browns is uncertain, they now have clarity this year.

Browns: 3 players who will lose their roles in 2023

Who has lost the most from the moves the Browns have made this offseason?

After adding seven new faces to their roster via the 2023 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns will have roles that are taken from established players. They have even added some late depth to their roster after the draft as well, like safety Rodney McLeod.

They opted not to re-sign a handful of players including defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and running back Kareem Hunt, but there are active players on their roster who may have their snaps usurped by younger players with more potential. Here are three players whose snaps are in the most danger after new faces have joined the roster.

It’s time for the Browns to move on from defensive tackle Jordan Elliott

It’s time to move on from the former third-round pick.

The Cleveland Browns selected defensive tackle Jordan Elliott in the third round pick number 88 in the 2020 NFL draft. Touted as a pass-rushing player with good athleticism coming out of Missouri three seasons later he only has 2.5 career sacks. He lacks a true pass-rush plan and his hand placement and technique just aren’t good enough to win consistently at the NFL level.

Elliott is a massive liability in run defense and PFF gave him an abysmal 33-run defense grade in 352 run defense snaps this past season. The worst part is that he has been unable to show much improvement overall three years into the league. This is a total miss from the front office who needs to admit its mistake and move on this offseason.

Browns Injury Report: Jadeveon Clowney back, Jedrick Wills misses practice with back injury

The Browns saw one player return while a new starter missed practice with an injury.

The Cleveland Browns are looking to rebound after a disappointing performance against the New Orleans Saints on Christmas Eve. Now as they prepare for Carson Wentz and the Washington Commanders, the Browns have some injuries to work through after Wednesday’s injury report was quite steep. While defensive end Jadeveon Clowney returned to practice, the Browns now may be without left tackle Jedrick Wills as he missed practice.

All-in-all, ten players appeared on Wednesday’s report for the Browns. Here is the full list of players who appeared on Wednesday’s injury report as the Browns get set to take on the Commanders.

Upon Further Review: What stood out from all-22 of Browns’ win over Texans

What stood out from the all-22 view of the matchup between the Browns and Texans?

It is time for Upon Further Review, where we diagnose some things that show up once we get a birds-eye view of the game film. The Cleveland Browns won by a score of 27-14 over the Houston Texans, and it looked ugly from live viewing. The all-22 was also quite ugly, but it is always nice to add some context to what is happening outside of the broadcast view.

What stood out after digesting the coach’s film of this less-than-stellar Week 13 matchup between the Browns and Texans? Here are four bullet points, two offensively and two defensively, that made impressions on a second viewing.

Browns’ top 10 defensive players in Week 13, per PFF

Who were the highest-graded defensive players for the Cleveland Browns against the Houston Texans this week?

Make it two weeks in a row where an opponent has failed to rush for over 100 yards despite half of them coming on the opening drives. Joe Woods has his Cleveland Browns defense playing a “bend but don’t break” mold of football over this two-game win streak, and he even saw his unit score two touchdowns on the day against the Houston Texans.

With contributions from a variety of unexpected players, the Browns were able to limit the Texans to just 14 points, with half of them coming in garbage time. Looking purely at PFF grades, who were the top ten defensive players for the Browns this past Sunday?

Browns missing 5 from Thursday’s practice with Bills up next

As the Browns and Bills get set to face off in Detroit, Cleveland had five players missing from practice.

As the Cleveland Browns prepare to travel to Detroit for their matchup against the Buffalo Bills due to weather in New York, they are getting healthy at the right time. Linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah returned to practice yesterday, and now tight end David Njoku practiced today. The Browns, however, were missing five from practice today.

Defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey missed practice with a head injury, and Michael Dunn and D’Anthony Bell both missed their second straight practice. Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott was dismissed from practice for a personal reason, and right tackle Jack Conklin was given his usual day of rest.

All things considered, the Browns are entering this matchup at near-full health as backups are the only ones out with injuries. The same cannot be said for the Bills who are still missing two starting defensive linemen, a starting linebacker, and a rotational receiver, and are still limiting quarterback Josh Allen.
