Upon Further Review: What stood out from all-22 of Browns’ win over Texans

What stood out from the all-22 view of the matchup between the Browns and Texans?

It is time for Upon Further Review, where we diagnose some things that show up once we get a birds-eye view of the game film. The Cleveland Browns won by a score of 27-14 over the Houston Texans, and it looked ugly from live viewing. The all-22 was also quite ugly, but it is always nice to add some context to what is happening outside of the broadcast view.

What stood out after digesting the coach’s film of this less-than-stellar Week 13 matchup between the Browns and Texans? Here are four bullet points, two offensively and two defensively, that made impressions on a second viewing.

Studs and duds from Browns’ Week 13 win vs. Texans

There are players who rise to the occasion and those who don’t show up every week. Who stood out in both directions against the Texans?

The Cleveland Browns improved to 5-7 on the season, pulling away from the Houston Texans thanks to scoring plays from the defense and special teams. They now look to travel to Cincinnati this weekend to take on the Bengals in hopes of improving to 3-1 in the AFC North.

Before transitioning to the Bengals, however, we take a look at who stood out in this win against the Texans, for both good and bad. It was not the prettiest win in the world, but there were still players making a name for themselves. Who stood out as studs in this game? Who has room to step it up this week against the Bengals?

Browns vs. Texans: Recapping Donovan Peoples-Jones’ punt return and all other scoring plays

In case you missed any of the scoring action against the Texans, we’ve got you covered

For the first time all season, the Cleveland Browns can now say they have won back-to-back games after defeating the Houston Texans by a score of 27-14. It was an ugly debut for quarterback Deshaun Watson after 700 days away from live action, but the defense and special teams units were able to account for every touchdown scored instead.

With all of the scoring action coming off of a punt return and two defensive touchdowns, it was quite an interesting and wacky game between the Browns and Texans. In case the action was missed yesterday, we recap every scoring play from the Browns here.

Browns vs. Texans: Deshaun Watson sloppy in return, defense creates takeaways in win

It was not pretty, but the Browns have won back-to-back games for the first time all season. What stood out the most in this win over the Texans?

The Cleveland Browns have won back-to-back games for the first time in 2022, advancing to 5-7 after defeating the Houston Texans by a score of 27-14. It was not a pretty showing, losing both Harrison Bryant and Sione Takitaki to injury.

It was also a rare one where the Browns had to rely on their defense and special teams instead of their offense, but were able to grind out a win against the 1-9-1 Texans. In this game, the defense managed to create three turnovers, including two defensive touchdowns.

While their chances of the playoffs are slim for the Browns, they are not lost with five games remaining. Before looking ahead to a divisional showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals, what stood out from the live viewing of this win over the Texans?

Browns Injury Alert: LB Sione Takitaki exits on cart vs. Texans

The Browns are already thin at linebacker, and Sione Takitaki exiting the game against the Texans on a cart does not help

The Cleveland Browns have not been able to avoid the injury bug this week. After starting tight end David Njoku was ruled out and listed as inactive, backup tight end Harrison Bryant also left the game against the Houston Texans with an injury. Now late in this game against the Browns saw their starting MIKE linebacker Sione Takitaki exit on the cart.

Already down two linebackers on Injured Reserve, losing Takitaki would be a huge blow for the Browns down the stretch. After a big game in this one against the Texans, the Browns may now need to lean on second-year linebacker Tony Fileds II moving forward.

WATCH: Tony Fields returns interception for touchdown vs. Texans

The Browns have a comfortable lead after their second defensive touchdown of the game

The Cleveland Browns have scored their second defensive touchdown of the game as second-year linebacker Tony Fields II picked off Kyle Allen and returned it for a touchdown against the Houston Texans. This makes it two weeks in a row where the Browns have gotten consistent production out of their 2021 NFL Draft fifth round pick.

He is now the starting WILL linebacker in base packages, and here he capitalizes on a Chase Winovich deflected pass on a blown-up screen pass to give the Browns a comfortable lead. If you would have told me the defense would outscore the offense in this game, I would have laughed. The Browns have now managed three takeaways in this game as well.

WATCH: Denzel Ward scoops and scores off of Kyle Allen fumble vs. Texans

The Browns now lead 14-5 after Denzel Ward scooped up a Kyle Allen fumble and returned it for a touchdown against the Texans.

The Cleveland Browns now lead the Houston Texans by a score of 14-5 after cornerback Denzel Ward scooped up a Kyle Allen fumble and walked it into the endzone. This is Ward’s second defensive touchdown of the season, and it gives the Browns some much-needed breathing room in this game against the 1-8-1 Texans.

The Browns now have a special teams touchdown and a defensive touchdown, but their offense has not been able to muster up a scoring drive in Deshaun Watson’s return to the field. With a quarter-and-a-half left in this game, there is still plenty of time for the offense to make it a trifecta on the day.

Browns Injury Alert: Harrison Bryant the exits game vs. Texans

After missing their starting tight end, backup Harrison Bryant has also entered the medical tent as the Browns take on the Texans.

Already missing their starting tight end David Njoku, the Cleveland Browns may be without their backup as well as Harrison Bryant has exited this game against the Houston Texans. They now only have one active tight end left in Pharaoh Brown as they wait to hear back on Bryant.

In what has been a sloppy game in Deshaun Watson’s return to the field, the only offensive touchdown the Browns have managed has been on a punt return from Donovan Peoples-Jones. The loss of another offensive weapon would only hurt their chances of finding offensive success in the second half against the Texans.

WATCH: John Johnson III picks off Kyle Allen on first play of game vs. Texans

John Johnson III creates a splash play on the very first play of the game for the Browns!

It only took one play for this defense to make a play against the Houston Texans. On the very first play of the game, John Johnson III picked off Texans’ quarterback Kyle Allen as a pass bounced off of the hands of his intended target for the Cleveland Browns.

The play had to be challenged by head coach Kevin Stefanski, but the officials got it right as quarterback Deshaun Watson operated his first drive of the game. Unfortunately, the offense went three-and-out and was not able to capitalize on the opportunity created by Johnson III. Stay tuned for more in-game updates.

Browns announce David Njoku, Tommy Togiai, 4 other inactives vs. Texans

The Cleveland Browns have announced their six inactives vs. the Texans

The Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans are getting set for battle as quarterback Deshaun Watson makes his debut for the brown and orange against his former team. Per usual, both teams have announced their inactives for today’s matchup. Among them is tight end David Njoku, who was ruled out with a knee injury this week, and defensive tackle Tommy Togiai.

This means Harrison Bryant must step up, and rookie defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey will look to build off of a solid outing last week where he played 24 snaps against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Who are the other inactives who will not suit up for the Browns today? We take a look at them here.
