Michigan football makes top group for Ohio State decommit

Oh, this is fun! #GoBlue

Michigan football was late to the party for 2025 Atlanta (Ga.) Douglass four-star cornerback Jontae Gilbert, but the Wolverines are already quite intriguing to the elite defensive back from SEC country.

The twist? He was once committed to rival Ohio State.

It’s almost been a year since Gilbert decommitted from the Buckeyes and he’s still looking for his next school of choice. And there was no thought that Michigan would be in the mix, well, because Michigan had not offered Gilbert — until just days ago, on May 29. But the maize and blue are apparently appealing to the nation’s No. 124 player in the country.

Gilbert revealed his top seven on Friday and Michigan made the cut, despite getting into the mix so late, along with South Carolina, Memphis, NC State, Louisville, UCF, and Georgia State.

The scouting report from 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins:

A longer-framed defensive back prospect with traits worth molding for the long haul. Measured just over 6-foot-1 multiple times summer before junior season and has some verified additional length in the arms. Has repped at both safety and cornerback early on in prep career and made plays at both spots while facing respectable Atlanta-based competition. Viewed by some coaches as more of a safety on Saturdays, but might be best suited for an outside role in a physical snap-to-whistle cover scheme given what he has put on tape thus far as he’s not afraid to use his hands and squeeze vertical routes. Offers upside as a run defender as he works to get off blocks and get ball carries on the ground. Light on ball production, but frame is impressive. Top-end speed, however, a bit of a question mark given lack of data points. Should be viewed as a potential multi-year impact player for a Power Five program if he can keep progressing.

A track runner in high school, at 6-foot-1, Gilbert matches the ethos of the Michigan coaching staff at looking for taller defensive backs. Though he’s listed at 247Sports as a cornerback, Rivals has him listed as an athlete.

Five-star member of Ohio State football’s 2025 class decommits

One got away for the 2025 class. #GoBucks

We have yet to wrap up the 2024 Ohio State football recruiting class, and already the Buckeyes have lost one of their commitments for 2026. According to everyone’s favorite graphics and commitment guru, Hayes Fawcett, five-star cornerback Jontae Gilbert has de-committed.

Out of Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia, Gilbert committed to Ohio State on July 29, 2022, and became the first commitment of the 2025 cycle. At 6-foot, 1-inch, and 175 pounds, Gilbert is ranked as the No. 2 safety and 25th overall recruit in the class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Gilbert did provide some quotes to On3 regarding the decommitment.

“First off I want to thank God for all of the blessings he has been sending my way. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me through my decision,” Gilbert told On3. “This was a very hard decision to make but after long talks with my family and my coaches, I now want to say I am opening back up my recruiting and decommit from Ohio State. Respect my decision. Thank you Buckeye Nation for everything and to all the Ohio State coaching staff.”

Ohio State will now have to reset things a bit for the 2025 class at cornerback. While it’s never great to lose a kid of Gilbert’s caliber, there’s still time to work on him or pivot to another talented defensive back.

An SEC school is trying to flip 2025 Ohio State football commit

This wasn’t the school we thought would be challenging the Buckeyes #GoBucks

It was a surprise when Georgia safety [autotag]Jontae Gilbert[/autotag] decided to commit to [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] almost a year ago.

The fact the he committed to the Buckeyes wasn’t a surprise, it was more the timing of the pledge. The 6-foot, 1-inch, 175 pound defensive back made his decision extremely early for a class of 2025 prospect.

This meant that the Ohio State coaching staff would have to continue to recruit Gilbert hard until he signs, nearly 2 years from his commitment day. It also meant fending off the big-time SEC schools that typically recruit his state well.

Not many expected Tennessee to be a challenger to flip the Buckeye commit, but Gilbert arrived at the Rivals NextGen Pro Day Camp wearing Volunteer gloves.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we have seen this with a Buckeye commit wearing another schools gloves, see Kayin Lee from last year’s cycle. We all knew this was going to be a fight until the end with Gilbert, but didn’t really expect Tennessee to be a school challenging Ohio State.

Florida added to busy June itinerary for this 5-star 2025 DB

One of the top recruits in the class of 2024, five-star defensive back Jontae Gilbert, is adding the University of Florida to his busy summer schedule.

Douglass (Atlanta, Georgia) defensive back [autotag]Jontae Gilbert[/autotag] is among the top recruits in the class of 2025.

For elite recruits, the timeline is accelerated. Power Five programs will host them almost a year ahead of their peers in hopes of getting on a player’s good side. Gilbert’s situation is even more unique since he’s committed to Ohio State University.

The University of Florida is still pushing for Gilbert, though, and so are several other Power Five programs. According to a 247Sports report, Gilbert plans on stopping by the Swamp on June 12. The trip would fall between visits to NC State and USC, and Tennessee just got him on Wednesday.

The Gators had defensive backs coach Corey Raymond offer Gilbert in May, so the relationship is still in its beginning stages. Florida likes him as a cornerback instead of at the safety spot, but he could end up playing some of the STAR position at Florida if he ends up there.

Gilbert has remained committed to the Buckeyes for almost a year now, but he’s still planning on looking at all the options available to him.

“I’m open even though I’m committed,” Gilbert said. “I’m looking at the guys every school has put in the league, you know? I want to go somewhere that I’m going to play and have a good relationship with the coaches and develop as a player.”

Raymond has a track record of putting players in the league, and Gilbert is clearly familiar with Florida’s recent defensive backs after mentioning both Trey Dean III and Rashad Torrence II by name.

Gilbert is a consensus four-star recruit, ranked No. 32 overall in the class of 2025 by both ESPN and Rivals.com. On3 and 247Sports are a little less bullish on him but still have him listed in the top 50.

The On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four services, puts Gilbert at No. 34 overall and No. 3 among safeties in the class.

2025 Ohio State commit discusses Vols’ visit, plans for a return

2025 Ohio State commit Jontae Gilbert discusses visiting Tennessee and plans for a return.

2025 five-star safety Jontae Gilbert attended Tennessee’s 2023 High School Camp on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound safety is from Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.

Gilbert discussed his interest and visiting Tennessee with Vols Wire.

“My biggest takeaway was getting the feel of being coached up by coach (Willie) Martinez and coach (Tim) Banks,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert has formed a relationship with Martinez and Banks throughout his recruitment.

“It’s a great relationship with those guys,” Gilbert said. “They are always checking in on me. The coaching staff really stands out, great coaches, so I see why guys do go there.”

Gilbert is committed to Ohio State and plans to visit Tennessee again.

“As of right now, Tennessee has all of my attention thus far,” he said. “I plan to get down again for the summer and for a game. It’s most likely going to be the South Carolina game.”

Gilbert is the No. 22 overall prospect in the class of 2025. He ranks as the No. 5 safety and No. 7 player in Georgia, according to 247Sports.

Gilbert committed to Ohio State in July 2022 with an open recruitment. The 2025 prospect plans to end his recruitment in May 2024.

LSU offers 4-star Ohio State commit

LSU’s recruiting staff recently offered a 4-star safety from Georgia who is currently committed to Ohio State.

LSU’s recruiting staff recently offered a four-star safety from Georgia who is currently committed to playing at the next level for the Ohio State Buckeyes.

[autotag]Jontae Gilbert[/autotag] is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound, four-star safety from Atlanta, where he plays for Douglass High School. The Douglass Astros finished the 2022 season 3-8 with a loss to Adairsville in their last game.

Gilbert has no Crystal Ball projections since he is committed to Ohio State. He will be a junior this fall, so there is time for him to change his mind.

Film Analysis: Gilbert starred as a safety for the Astros. He made great plays in coverage and did a great job coming up in run support.

Gators fighting hard to get 5-star Ohio State safety commit on campus

This 5-star defensive back recruit will “will consider Florida” despite being committed to OSU already.

One of the key foundations to the revival of Florida’s football program is the construction of a boilerplate defense to keep the Gators’ opponents off the scoreboard. Once upon a time, the Orange and Blue was known as Defensive Back University and assistant head coach/secondary coach Corey Raymond has the unenviable task of restoring clout to the defensive corps.

Among those Billy Napier and Co. are in pursuit of is five-star safety [autotag]Jontae Gilbert[/autotag] out of Atlanta (Georgia) Douglass in the 2024 recruiting cycle, who is currently committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes. The 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound defensive back has had his eyes on Florida for some time — in large part because of the reputation the program has for vaulting its players to the next level.

“Really, it’s their DBs and how they get them to the NFL. CJ Henderson and Kaiir Elam, I look up to those guys; I like those guys,” Gilbert told Gators Online.

The rising high school senior is also particularly interested in the Gators’ secondary coach.

“I saw that he has been to a couple of schools and put some guys in the NFL, so that’s great,” he said of Raymond. “It feels great knowing the head coach and position coach really want me that bad.”

The Peach State prospect committed to the Buckeyes last July, but despite his esteem for Ryan Day’s program, he is committed to hearing out other options. The Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, USC Trojans, Texas A&M Aggies, Auburn Tigers, Tennessee Volunteers and South Carolina Gamecocks are among the many schools vying for his talents.

As far as the Gators are concerned, “I will consider Florida,” Gilbert offered. “It’s not too far from home; that’s an easy little drive.”

Gilbert is rated at five stars and is ranked No. 22 overall and No. 2 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking rates him at four stars and has him at Nos. 34 and 3, respectively.

Aggies offer 2025 5-Star defensive back Jontae Gilbert

Currently committed to Ohio State, 2025 5-Star defensive back Jontae Gilbert has received an off from Texas A&M.

The 2025 recruiting class for Texas A&M may be in its early stages, but that won’t stop Head coach Jimbo Fisher from offering some of the top talents at every position even if that recruit is tentatively committed elsewhere.

There’s no denying that Fisher is still one of the top-tier recruiters in the country, and even though nothing will ever match the historic nature of the unbelievably talented 2022 cycle, the 2023 class embodies “quality over quantity”, providing immediate support on both sides of the ball next season.

On Sunday, March 5, it was reported that 2025 5-Star defensive back Jontae Gilbert, who is currently a “hard commit” with Ohio State, visited Texas A&M and received an offer on the same day, as the Atlanta, Georgia native reportedly stated that he was “shocked” by the offer, and would like the Aggies to continue pursuing his talents in the coming months. Standing at 6-1, and 175lbs, Gilbert is already at the preferred NFL cornerback height, and will of course add weight once he enters the collegiate ranks.

Time will tell just how good Gilbert can be with more high school tape to complete an accurate scouting assessment, but as of now, Fisher’s aggressive recruiting approach is just what the Aggies need in order to start the 2025 recruiting class off with a bang.
