Five-star member of Ohio State football’s 2025 class decommits

One got away for the 2025 class. #GoBucks

We have yet to wrap up the 2024 Ohio State football recruiting class, and already the Buckeyes have lost one of their commitments for 2026. According to everyone’s favorite graphics and commitment guru, Hayes Fawcett, five-star cornerback Jontae Gilbert has de-committed.

Out of Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia, Gilbert committed to Ohio State on July 29, 2022, and became the first commitment of the 2025 cycle. At 6-foot, 1-inch, and 175 pounds, Gilbert is ranked as the No. 2 safety and 25th overall recruit in the class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Gilbert did provide some quotes to On3 regarding the decommitment.

“First off I want to thank God for all of the blessings he has been sending my way. I want to thank my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me through my decision,” Gilbert told On3. “This was a very hard decision to make but after long talks with my family and my coaches, I now want to say I am opening back up my recruiting and decommit from Ohio State. Respect my decision. Thank you Buckeye Nation for everything and to all the Ohio State coaching staff.”

Ohio State will now have to reset things a bit for the 2025 class at cornerback. While it’s never great to lose a kid of Gilbert’s caliber, there’s still time to work on him or pivot to another talented defensive back.
