Report: Titans to work out RB Jacques Patrick on Monday

The Titans are reportedly set to work out RB Jacques Patrick on Monday.

UPDATE: The Tennessee Titans are signing running back Jacques Patrick after a successful workout on Monday (READ MORE).

The Tennessee Titans are reportedly set to take a look at a running back on Monday morning.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, the Titans are bringing in running back Jacques Patrick for a workout. The move comes in the wake of fellow running back Jonathan Ward suffering a knee injury that ended his preseason Week 1 early.

A former undrafted free-agent signing of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020, Patrick, who played his college ball at Florida State, has appeared in two games during his career, both coming in 2021 with the San Francisco 49ers, where Titans general manager Ran Carthon was at the time.

The 6-foot-3, 234-pound back tallied two carries for 12 yards in those contests while playing primarily on special teams.

The severity of Ward’s injury remains unknown, but this move might be a sign that the veteran back is set to miss time.

Aside from Ward, the Titans also have Derrick Henry, Tyjae Spears, Hassan Haskins and Julius Chestnut on the roster. Patrick would be facing an uphill climb to make the cut if signed.

Titans training camp preview at RB: Locks, competitions, 53-man prediction

We take a look at the Titans’ roster locks, players on the bubble, the competitions set to take place and a 53-man projection for the running back position.

In our latest training camp preview, we take a look at the Tennessee Titans’ running backs room, which is spearheaded by one of the best in the business in Derrick Henry.

People have been trying to write Henry’s career obituary since he suffered a foot injury in 2021 that knocked him out for half of a season. However, folks will have to hold off on that.

That’s because Henry showed he’s still got plenty left in the tank following a season in which he tallied 1,538 yards on the ground despite having a putrid offensive line in front of him. He also tallied career-highs in receptions (33) and receiving yards (398).

Joining holdovers from last year like Julius Chestnut and Jonathan Ward are 2023 third-round pick, Tyjae Spears, and undrafted free agent out of Cincinnati, Charles McClelland.

So, let’s talk about it: here’s a look at Tennessee’s roster locks at the position, as well as the players on the bubble, the competition set to take place, and a 53-man projection for how it will all pan out.

1 veteran on roster bubble at each position on offense for the Titans

Shaun Calderon takes a look at one veteran from each position group on offense who’s on the roster bubble ahead of training camp.

As we inch closer to training camp with each passing day, the Tennessee Titans still have their fair share of position battles that need to be resolved at a handful of different spots.

While there are a few question marks atop the depth chart, the majority of these battles taking place are set to identify which players will ultimately secure a reserve role for themselves.

Several of these competitions include a veteran player or two who are right on the cusp of the roster bubble.

This article is going to discuss one veteran player at each position group on the offensive side of the ball who could find themselves on the outside looking in come roster cut day.

Some positions have obvious choices to make, while others are worthy of having a real debate. Let’s find out which offensive veterans I think are on the roster bubble heading into camp.

Titans’ biggest winners from the offseason program

Titans QB Malik Willis needed at least a small victory ahead of training camp, and he got it during the offseason program.

While things certainly haven’t been quiet for the Tennessee Titans in the last few days, we are in what I call the dog days of the NFL offseason, when teams are on break in between the offseason program and training camp.

The Titans completed their offseason program on June 15, when the team held its final practices of OTAs. Prior to that, Tennessee held mandatory minicamp, which was the first time this year we saw several players, including veteran safety Kevin Byard.

Various players on both sides of the ball made standout plays in practice, but for the purpose of picking winners from the offseason program, we’re mainly looking at guys who routinely stood out, while also factoring in other things.

Without further ado, a look at the biggest winners from the Titans’ offseason program, a group that is carrying a little extra momentum ahead of training camp, which begins on July 25.

Titans designate Zach Cunningham to return from IR among 2 moves

The Titans have designated Zach Cunningham to return from injured reserve.

The Tennessee Titans announced two roster moves on Wednesday, including designating linebacker Zach Cunningham to return from injured reserve.

Cunningham landed on the list with an elbow injury that has kept him out the past five games. The veteran linebacker has missed a total of eight games with the injury this season.

The designation opens Cunningham’s 21-day window to be activated. His return will be big, as the Titans are without fellow starting linebacker David Long for at least three more games after he was placed on IR last week.

In other news, the Titans have added running back Jonathan Ward to the practice squad. Ward was one of 10 players to tryout for the Titans on Tuesday.

Ward appeared in 32 games (no starts) for the Arizona Cardinals over three seasons with the team, tallying nine rushes for 33 yards and four receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown.

The signing of Ward gives the Titans some insurance at running back with both Hassan Haskins and Dontrell Hilliard dealing with injuries.

Cardinals’ RB room basically has 2 open spots for final roster

The addition of Darrel Williams makes it appear that Jonathan Ward, Eno Benjamin and Keaontay Ingram will be competing for 2 roster spots.

The Arizona Cardinal added running back Darrel Williams to the offseason roster Tuesday, a move that comes as no surprise, as it was reported and confirmed long before the official signing.

With the move, it gives the Cardinals a second proven back in the league to pair with James Conner, who re-signed this offseason to a three-year deal.

It also tightens the competition for the remaining roster spots when it comes to the final 53-man roster.

Williams is not guaranteed a spot on the roster, but after more than 1,000 total yards from scrimmage in 2021, he seems pretty close to a lock.

That leaves two likely spots on the roster at running back, which means a competition between Eno Benjamin, Jonathan Ward, sixth-round pick Keaontay Ingram and undrafted rookies T.J. Pledger and Ronnies Rivers.

It will likely come down to a decision between Ward, Benjamin and Ingram for those final spots on the roster.

Ward has size and is a solid contributor on special teams. Benjamin offers more upside in the run game and can return kicks. Ingram is a big back who has a versatile skillset.

As OTAs continue and as training camp rolls around at the end of next month, this will be a competition to watch.

RB Jonathan Ward officially re-signs with Cardinals for 2022

He returns for a third season with the Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals welcome back running back Jonathan Ward. The team announced he re-signed with the team on Monday, signing the qualifying tender the team offered.

Ward, entering his third season in the NFL, was an exclusive rights free agent so the only way for him to play was to sign the offer or for the Cardinals to withdraw the offer.

He has not yet accrued enough years in the league to qualify for free agency.

Ward entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2020 with the Cardinals and carved out a role on special teams for the last two seasons.

The 6-0, 202-lb back appeared in 13 games last season. He had nine rushing attempts for 33 yards and three receptions for 34 yards.

He scored a touchdown on his first NFL touch in 2020, an 11-yard touchdown catch in Week 17 against the Los Angeles Rams.

With his return, the Cardinals now have four backs under contract — James Conner, Eno Benjamin, Ward and Jaylen Samuels.

He has a chance to compete to be the No. 2 running back behind Conner.

He will be a restricted free agent next offseason.

Cardinals tender contracts to RB Jonathan Ward, WR Antoine Wesley

Ward returns to the Cardinals for a third season and Wesley comes back for his second. Both were exclusive rights free agents.

The Arizona Cardinals will welcome back running back Jonathan Ward for a third season and receiver Antoine Wesley for a second. Because neither has completed three credited years in the NFL, they are exclusive rights free agents.

The team announced they were tendered qualifying contract offers. Because they are exclusive rights free agents, they have the choice of signing or not playing in the NFL.

Their one-year contract offers will pay Ward $895,000 in salary and Wesley $825,000.

Ward played mostly on special teams, appearing in 13 games last season. He had limited work on offense, rushing the ball nine times for 33 yards. He also had three receptions for 34 yards.

Wesley, who signed with the team in training camp last year, ended up getting significant playing time in the last half of the season because of the injury to receiver DeAndre Hopkins. He played in 15 games, starting four, and finished with 19 receptions for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He scored the three touchdowns in the final three games of the season.

He 6-4, 206-lb receiver will compete for a role this coming offseason.
