NCAA Tournament: Jon Scheyer recaps Duke’s performance versus Vols

NCAA Tournament: Jon Scheyer recaps Duke’s performance versus Tennessee

No. 4 seed Tennessee (24-10, 11-7 SEC) defeated No. 5 seed Duke (27-8, 14-6 ACC), 65-52, Saturday at Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

The Vols advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Following the second-round contest, first-year Duke head coach Jon Scheyer met with media.

“Well, one, congratulations to Tennessee,” Scheyer said. “They played an outstanding game. They’re incredibly well-coached. They’re tough. They’ve been through it before. They made some big-time plays.

I’m incredibly proud of our team. We’ve had really a great season, and it’s hard to reflect on all of that right now in the moment. I’m hurting for these guys. They’ve given us everything you could ask for. They’ve fought through adversity. They’ve stuck together when things weren’t looking as good and came into this game one of the hottest teams in the country, and we felt like we were supposed to win this game, as did they. Really felt like a Sweet 16, Elite 8 game type of game. They’re really good, and credit them, they shoot almost 50 from three, and (Olivier) Nkamhoua has one of his best games, maybe his best game ever, and you’ve got to tip your hat to him, but really proud of our team and what we’ve done. It hurts. It stings. It’s going to be that way for a while, but really proud of our guys and these guys next to me right here.”

Jon Scheyer’s stunned look at Duke’s big deficit became an immediate meme

Things could not have started worse for the Blue Devils in Raleigh.

When former Duke star and assistant coach Jon Scheyer took over the helm after the departure of the legendary Mike Krzyzewski, he knew it would be a challenging role. We’re not sure he thought it would be as challenging as the first half against nearby rival N.C. State, however.

The Blue Devils started an absolutely atrocious 0-for-13 from the floor, turned the ball over four times and missed two free throws as they fell behind 15-0 to the Wolfpack. After finally getting on the board with a Mark Williams dunk 7:40 into the game, N.C. State answered with a three to make it 18-2.

As cameras panned to Scheyer on the bench, he was straight up not having a good time.

It became an instant meme.

Five things we learned about Ohio State’s loss to Duke

What were your takeaways? #GoBucks

Duke used a late first-half run to gain a 39-29 lead at intermission and never relinquished it until the final buzzer sounded as Ohio State fell 81-72 on Wednesday night in an ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchup. It was a tough game for the Buckeyes, but one where they had their chances to win. Here are five things we learned during OSU’s loss to the Blue Devils.

Notre Dame coach Mike Brey previews season at ACC media day

Excited about the Irish’s chances this year?

If you had written off Notre Dame before ACC play began last year, no one would have blamed you. After all, the program hadn’t been that good in a while, and the Irish didn’t exactly impress in their nonconference slate other than a win over ranked Kentucky. Then, longtime coach [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] proved he had a little magic left in him and guided the Irish to their first NCAA Tournament in five years. They even won a couple of games in the tournament and nearly made it out of the first weekend.

Now, Brey is focused on how to make the 2022-23 Irish even better. Here’s what he said at Wednesday’s ACC media day in Charlotte, North Carolina:

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer visits a notable UNC target this week

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer recently visited a top UNC basketball 2024 target, setting the stage for another head-to-head recruiting battle.

It’s a busy time of the recruiting calendar as coaches are out and about visiting key prospects and for one key UNC basketball target, he received a visit from arch rival Duke this week.

2024 four-star center [autotag]James Brown[/autotag] was visited by Duke head coach Jon Scheyer on Monday, according to On3.com analyst Jamie Shaw.

Brown is a top-30 prospect in the class, ranked No. 27 ini the 247Sports class rankings.

Brown has already locked in an official visit to North Carolina, scheduled for October 15th. He also has visits to Duke, Missouri, Illinois and Michigan State also scheduled.

The 6-foot-10 center recently discussed his interest in North Carolina with On3.com.

“I know a lot historically about the program, with their success and their many great players but that’s another school I’m prepared to learn a lot about,” Brown said of UNC. “That’s a school that I like, even outside of their basketball success but educational success as well. That’s something that’s really important to me and my family, athletics, but education as well. I’m really excited to get to know Coach (Hubert) Davis and his staff and the whole Carolina program.”

Brown has also previously said that UNC was his ‘dream school’.

This certainly could be another recruitment that comes down to the two arch-rivals.

Iowa Hawkeyes set to take on Duke Blue Devils in Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 6

The Iowa Hawkeyes are set to take on the Duke Blue Devils in a primetime matchup with national prominence on Dec. 6.

The Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball team is going to be taking on one of the nation’s premier blue bloods when they travel to the Jimmy V Classic in December of this upcoming season.

The Hawkeyes will make their way to Madison Square Garden in New York City to take part in the mega-event. On Dec. 6, Iowa will take on the Duke Blue Devils along with a matchup of the Texas Longhorns battling it out against fellow Big Ten Member, the Illinois Fighting Illini.

This will be Iowa’s first appearance in the Jimmy V Classic. Duke, Illinois, and Texas are all making their fourth trip to compete in the event that is held to generate donation money and awareness for the V Foundation for Cancer Research that is named after Jim Valvano.

However, it will be Iowa’s fifth trip to Madison Square Garden under head coach Fran McCaffery. The Hawkeyes advanced to the NIT Championship in 2013, participated in the 2K Classic in 2014 and 2018 (champions), and competed in the 2018 Big Ten Tournament.

Iowa has cracked the code against Duke just once in its history as they are 1-7 against the Blue Devils all-time in head-to-head matchups. The matchup this year may be a bit more wide open for the taking and a good chance for Iowa to get a win against the blue blood.

Iowa did lose two key figures after last season, Jordan Bohannon and Keegan Murray, but looks to continue building on a Big Ten Championship. Duke is entering a new era under head coach Jon Scheyer after all-time great Mike Krzyzewski retired following Duke’s Final Four appearance in last season’s NCAA Tournament.

The exact times for the games has not been set, but fans can expect both of these matchup to be aired on ESPN.

He added that many labeled him the …

He added that many labeled him the “next white Duke guy we’re going to hate” in the lineage of Duke players to follow him like current Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer and the aforementioned Allen. He clarified that Allen “did some stuff that deserved the harsh treatment” but that his own experience was different. He continued: “I created this on-court persona … I leaned in. Like, oh. You think I’m an [expletive]? Just trust me. I can be an [expletive] … You want me to read my poetry?”

Iowa reportedly set to square off against Duke in the 2022 Jimmy V Classic

Iowa will meet the Duke Blue Devils in the 2022 Jimmy V Classic. Here’s a look at the all-time series history and Duke’s projected starters.

The start of Iowa’s 2022-23 men’s basketball season is still every bit of five months away. Still, the Hawkeyes just received fantastic news with the return of forward Kris Murray to Iowa City.

Paired with several other decisions by Iowa players to either return or exit via the transfer portal, fans now have a pretty clear idea of what the Hawkeyes’ starting five and key reserves will look like entering next season.

Now, Iowa fans know they can book flights and start planning a trip to New York City for a battle against a blue blood.

CBS Sports and College Hoops Today’s Jon Rothstein reported that Iowa is set to meet the Duke Blue Devils in the 2022 Jimmy V Classic from historic Madison Square Garden. Rothstein also reported that the other game in the event is expected to feature the Texas Longhorns against the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Duke is one of the pillar programs in all of college basketball and will enter next season fresh off the Blue Devils’ 17th all-time appearance in the Final Four. Of course, legendary head coach Mike Krzyewski’s 13th and final Final Four appearance ended with the Blue Devils’ archrivals in the North Carolina Tar Heels sending Duke packing, 81-77.

The Kansas Jayhawks would go on to win the national championship over North Carolina, erasing a 16-point deficit in a historic second-half flurry for the largest title game comeback in NCAA Tournament history, topping the Tar Heels, 72-69.

In its history, Iowa has met up with Duke on eight different occasions. The Blue Devils lead the all-time series 7-1. The Hawkeyes and Blue Devils last played on Nov. 27, 2001, in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. It was not to be from the jump for an Iowa team led by guard Luke Recker and forward Reggie Evans.

Duke point guard Jason Williams scored 25 points, center Carlos Boozer added 22 and forward Mike Dunleavy chipped in with 18. The then-No. 1 and defending national champion Blue Devils routed Iowa, 80-62, inside the United Center.

Duke is set to replace some serious star power from last season’s Final Four team, but the Blue Devils have reloaded their roster with some serious talent. Here’s a look at the all-time series matchups between Iowa and Duke and a look at the Blue Devils’ projected starting five.

Duke eases Mike Krzyzewski into retirement with an adorable puppy he can coach at home

Too cute.

Now that Mike Krzyzewski is officially retired, he’ll have a lot more time on his hands at home.

The adjustment won’t likely be an easy one for someone who’s spent the last five decades coaching basketball. So new Duke head coach Jon Scheyer, along with the team Krzyzewski just coached to the Final Four, got him a little gift to make it easier.

At Duke’s annual awards banquet on Thursday, the team surprised Coach K on stage with the most adorable puppy, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen Krzyzewski light up like this before. Fittingly, the pup is named Coach, and just look at him, he’s perfect.

With a new puppy around the house, Coach K won’t be short of an outlet to bark orders at in case of a relapse. But let’s be real, Coach is going to be the real head dog of the Krzyzewski household.

College Basketball: The 10 all-time most annoying Dukies

Who belongs at the top of this list and why?

College basketball officially starts nationwide tonight which means it’s a chance for all of us in this divided nation and world come together in one cause:

Hating Duke basketball.

As a kid I ate it all up.  Mike Krzyzewski was a hero in my 15-year old eyes when Duke won it all in the spring of 2001, but 20 years later I’m grateful to have seen the light since and realized just how insufferable that entire program is.  How Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey developed into such a likable figure after spending eight years on Krzyzewski’s bench is beyond me, but I digress.

With Krzyzewski starting his final season as Duke’s head coach this year let’s honor him by naming the 10 Most Annoying Dukies of All-Time:
