Despite coming up short by a score of 27-25 against the Houston Texans, the Jacksonville Jaguars made the game interesting and were competitive unlike in some of the games they’ve had earlier in the season. However, the game seemingly didn’t come without its casualties as kicker Josh Lambo is now set to be out for the season.

Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the veteran kicker is headed to injured reserve after injuring his gluteus medius muscle Sunday. With it being his second time having an IR designation, that means he won’t be able to return again until 2021.

This is a big blow to the Jags not only because Lambo is an elite kicker, but also because they’ve struggle without him. He also went on IR before Week 3’s game against the Miami Dolphins due to the injury and the Jags went through several kickers (four to be exact) trying to find the answer. None could fill his void and struggled in Lambo’s place, and now the team might turn back to Jon Brown (from their practice squad). As many fans can recall, Brown was a player who the Jags got a look at in Lambo’s absence as he started Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.

In Sunday’s game, Lambo was 2-of-2 on his field goals, one of which tied Josh Scobee for the longest in team history for 59-yards. The veteran did miss an extra point attempt, however, putting him at 1-of-2 for the day.

Lambo injured himself on the Jags’ last play, which was an onside kick. In addition to the injury, the kick was recovered by the Texans allowing them to take a knee and claim the victory.

Jags activate PK Josh Lambo alongside other roster transactions

Jags kicker Josh Lambo is officially back from injured reserve.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ injury report was one with many names on it, but one player who seemingly has been cleared to return is placekicker Josh Lambo. After being designated to return from injured reserve (with a left hip injury) earlier in the week, the team officially activated him Thursday.

Lambo’s return is a huge one for the Jags as their kicking game has struggled since his absence which dates back to after Week 2’s game against the Tennessee Titans. The Jags went through four kickers while Lambo recovered due to injuries or struggles on the field in Brandon Wright, Aldrick Rosas, Stephen Hauschka, and Jon Brown.

Of course, with Brown being the Jags’ active kicker Week 6, he was released upon Lambo’s return. Defensive end Josh Mauro was released, too, after spending time on the commissioner’s exempt list. The veteran was placed on the list after serving a five-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs and also had to be placed on the Jags’ Reserve/ COVID-19 list this past weekend.

Mauro’s release made room for the Jags to promote undrafted rookie tight end, Ben Ellefson, from their practice squad to their main roster. Ellefson’s promotion is likely a result of the Jags’ injury situation at tight end as veteran Tyler Eifert didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday with a neck injury.

Ellefson was able to gain some experience earlier this season, participating in the Jags’ Week 1 game against the Indianapolis Colts and Week 2’s game against the Titans. While he didn’t register any catches in those games, Week 2’s game marked a start for him and he was able to register 30 snaps when combining his snaps from both games.

Lastly, the Jags placed veteran defensive tackle Abry Jones on injured reserve with an ankle injury. The decision came after he didn’t participate in practice Thursday with the injury. As a result of Thursday’s transaction, Jones won’t be eligible to return until three more games, which means he’ll have to sit out of their games against the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Green Bay Packers.

Josh Lambo to begin kicking in practice again, could return Week 7 if healthy

The Jags could be getting their star kicker Josh Lambo back after the kicking game has struggled the last few weeks.

Jacksonville Jaguars place kicker could be on the verge of returning this week as the team prepares for the Los Angeles Chargers. Coach Doug Marrone told the media the Jags would get a look at the veteran Wednesday or Thursday, and if he feels good enough to go, he’ll get the nod.

Having Lambo would be huge for the Jags as their kicking game has struggled this season. They’ve gone through three kickers (Brandon Wright, Aldrick Rosas and Stephen Hauschka) in his absence and Jon Brown currently holds his spot on the team. The team is 5-of-8 on field goals since Lambo went on injured reserve, with the two coming from Hauschka (Week 5) and one coming from Brown against the Detroit Lions.

Lambo has kicked at a Pro Bowl level for the Jags since joining the team in 2017, making 74-of-78 field goals (94.9%), so it goes without saying having him back would give the team more security. However, if he’s not ready, Brown could get another chance to take the field with the team.

Jon Brown makes first kick of his career on any level vs. Lions

Jags PK Jon Brown had a life changing moment Sunday, making his first kick ever in a game on any level.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have struggled to find a guy at kicker since Josh Lambo was place on injured reserve after Week 2. However, they may have found an option to get them through his absence.

Their new kicker, Jon Brown, was able to nail a 31-yarder in the first quarter, putting the score at 7-3. But why is this important, you ask? Well, it not only marked Brown’s first regular season attempt, but it was his first field goal attempt on any level. That includes his high school and collegiate career as he was a soccer and kickoff specialist before entering the league.

The Jags signed Brown to their practice squad on Oct. 9 and eventually had to promote him to the active roster after cutting Stephen Hauschka on Monday.

Brown also had an attempt in the second quarter for 32 yards, but missed it wide right. However, with two quarters remaining in the game and the Jags down 17-3, he could see plenty of opportunities to prove himself — even if it’s just for extra point attempts.

New Jaguars kicker Jon Brown has never attempted a regular-season field goal

New Jaguars kicker Jon Brown can make NFL history in a few ways when his team takes on the Lions today.

As they prepare to take on the Lions today, the 1-4 Jaguars are setting bad NFL precedent in a special teams sense. New kicker Jon Brown, promoted from the practice squad, is the fifth kicker Jacksonville has put on the field this season. The Jaguars’ other kickers have experienced bad luck usually experienced only by Spinal Tap drummers or Trump campaign managers.

Josh Lambo is on injured reserve with a hip issue. Brandon Wright has a groin injury. Stephen Hauschka has a knee problem, and Aldrick Rosas has hip and groin injuries. So, the Jaguars have Jon Brown as their fifth guy. Per ESPN, Brown makes the Jaguars the only team in NFL history to have a different player attempt a field goal or point after touchdown in each of their first five games of a season.

“I can’t remember anything like this,” Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said this week. “I don’t think anyone has been though anything like this as far as the people here, whether it’s [special-teams coordinator] Joe DeCamillis, [assistant special-teams coordinator] Mike Mallory or any of the other coaches.

“… Unfortunately a lot of the other players that we’ve had have been injured or have gotten injured, which is crazy in that regard.”

Indeed. What’s even more crazy is that Brown has never attempted a kick of any kind in a regular-season game. Brown was more of a soccer player growing up — he started playing that spot at age four, became a premier teenage player, and played at Louisville in college. When he did try to kick an American football, people were intrigued.

“He literally had no idea about the technique to kick a football,” said Baer, who kicked for Louisiana in college. “He was just like, ‘Yeah, I think I’ll give it a shot.’ For him to be able to flip the switch like that, nowadays, it just doesn’t happen.”

Brett Baer, a kicking coach who spent time with the Rams, was in charge of getting Brown up to speed.

“We had to start from step one,” Baer said in 2018, “and I had to kind of explain to him what a field goal was.”

After a chat about the basics, per Courier-Journal.com, Brown took three steps back, two over and then kicked for the first time.

“I was like, ‘Holy crap, man,'” Baer said. “He just crushed it. Just the most powerful kick that I’ve ever seen, the way the ball exploded off his foot.”

The Bengals signed Brown to their practice squad as an undrafted free agent in 2018, but he never made a kick in the regular season. There is evidence, however, of a 55-yard field goal in the preseason against the Cowboys.

Brown can make history in another sense — per this report, he can become the sixth Black kicker in pro football history to attempt a regular-season kick at that designated position.

Jaguars sign PK Jon Brown to practice squad

The Jags sustained another injury at kicker and signed Jon Brown to their practice squad as a result.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ struggles to keep their kickers healthy continued this week as they had to place Aldrick Rosas on injured reserve off their practice squad Friday. Taking his place will be a new signing, Jon Brown, who previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals and San Francisco 49ers.

Brown went undrafted in 2016 after initially going to Kentucky to play soccer then transferring to Louisville as a junior to make a switch to football.

Brown’s signing is the fourth the Jags have made at the kicker position since training camp ended. They initially signed rookie Brandon Wright to their practice squad for an emergency if Josh Lambo sustained an injury. That’s exactly what happened Week 3 before the Jags’ game against the Miami Dolphins as Lambo was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury. Wright was then called up from the practice squad, but exited Week 3 with a groin injury.

After Wright’s injury the Jags signed both Rosas (to practice squad) and Stephen Hauschka (to the active roster). However, Hauschka was inactive Week 4 with a knee injury, making Rosas the option against the Bengals.

The Jags have one more week before Lambo can return because Week 5 will be his third week on injured reserve. Hauschka will be the one taking his place after practicing in full and being left off the status column of the final injury report.

Jaguars claim safety Josh Jones off waivers, sign 7 to reserve/future contracts

Despite the Jacksonville Jaguars 2019 season coming to a close Sunday, the team decided to make some postseason transactions by signing seven players to reserve/future contracts. Amongst the group was kicker Jon Brown, defensive tackle Brian Price, offensive linemen Ryan Pope and Blake Hance, defensive end Chuck Harris, cornerback Jayson Stanley, and receiver Charone Peake.

The team also claimed former Dallas Cowboys safety, Josh Jones, off waivers, too.

Brown, 27, has been in the leagues since 2016 after going undrafted to the Cincinnati Bengals. He was on and off the team as an offseason and preseason player but eventually ended up with the San Francisco 49ers temporarily in the spring of 2019.

Price, 25, signed with the Jags in October and spent the remainder of the year on their practice squad. Before that, he spent time with various teams like the Indianapolis Colts and Dallas Cowboys amongst notables. Throughout his career, he was able to participate in 22 games and earn one start while also accumulating 20 tackles.

Pope, 22, signed with the Jags in November and was designated to their practice squad. He initially entered the league as an undrafted free-agent in 2019 to the Detroit Lions. He later joined the 49ers before joining the Jags.

Hance, 23, joined the Jags’ practice squad after final cuts and previously played for the Washington Redskins. Prior to that, he played collegiately at Northwestern University.

Harris, 21, signed with the Jags’ practice squad in November. He played collegiately at the University of Buffalo and accumulated 149 total tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks while participating in 40 games for the Bills. Afterward,  he went undrafted to the Chicago Bears last April before joining the Jags.

Stanley, 22, went undrafted to the Atlanta Falcons last April. He spent time on their practice squad and the Miami Dolphins’ before joining the Jags’ Week 16. He played cornerback while attending the University of Georgia but was converted to a receiver while with the Falcons. He appeared in 37 games with the Bulldogs in college and most of his snaps came on special teams.

Peake, 27, was a seventh-round pick of the New York Jets in 2016. After playing collegiately at Clemson, he spent three seasons with Gang Green where he accumulated 22 receptions for 214 yards and a touchdown. However, in August of 2019, he was released by the team.

Jones, 25, has participated in 35 career games for the Cowboys and Green Bay Packers, who he initially entered the league with as a second-round pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. Since his time in the league, he managed to register 12 starts and will enter his Jags tenure with 119 tackles, seven pass breakups, three sacks, and a pick.
