Report: Browns set to release S John Johnson III

The Browns are releasing a former high-profile free agency signing.

Two offseasons ago, the Cleveland Browns were praised for landing Pro Bowl safety John Johnson III in free agency. Fast forward to today, and the Browns are now set to release Johnson III after two disappointing seasons in the brown and orange. Given the nature of Johnson’s contract, this will have to be designated as a post-June 1 cut, which means the Browns will not get the nearly $10 million in cap savings until that date.

As the Browns look to improve their roster through the 2023 NFL Draft and especially through free agency, clearing that cap space (and they are far from done creating more money to spend) is an essential move.

Insider: Browns could try to re-structure John Johnson III’s contract to retain him

Will the veteran safety be back for a third season?

Overall, things haven’t gone how the Cleveland Browns hoped when they signed veteran safety John Johnson III two years ago in free agency. There have been flashes and some great games but he has not looked like the player he was with the Los Angeles Rams. Some believe that it was mostly because of the scheme Joe Woods was running and others question his effort levels at times.

Most have thought that the Browns would wash their hands of the deal and save the cap space by releasing him. But Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot isn’t certain that a release is coming without trying to redo the contract.

“It will depend, in part, on new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s evaluation of Johnson, but I think the Browns will try to restructure his contract to lower that number, and if the two sides can’t agree, they’ll either trade of release him as a June 1 designation, in which case they’ll save $9.75 million on the cap.”

3 players who could get the axe as cap casualties for the Browns

Which players may not return because of their salary?

The Cleveland Browns have some significant contract extensions that will kick in this next season. They have a ton of rollover cap from 2022 but they still need to clear some space for potential free agents. Andrew Berry has done an excellent job in creating outs in contracts where he can cut players early and gain cap space if the deal isn’t working out.

Cleveland will have to decide if they can find someone cheaper to fill in or if they might restructure the current deals to make space and retain players. Let’s take a look at three players that may be on a new team to create more cap space.

3 Browns who disappointed in an underwhelming 2022 campaign

Who were the biggest letdowns for the Browns?

With the Cleveland Browns ending their season with a record of 7-10, it goes without saying that some players didn’t live up to expectations. Some had minor expectations others were counted on to play major roles that they fell short of. Some players were expected to take steps forward after showing flashes last season and things didn’t come together as the team hoped.

There will be roster changes for the Browns and general manager Andrew Berry who showed last year he will part ways with big contracts. Berry doesn’t seem to have the ego where he can’t admit mistakes showing that with cutting Austin Hooper last offseason.

Here is a look at the biggest disappointments for the Browns this season.

Browns Injury report: Jedrick Wills misses second practice, James Hudson could start vs. Commanders

The Browns are trending toward a week without Jedrick Wills

The second injury report of the week has come out for the Cleveland Browns as they prepare for the Washington Commanders.
