Mock trade has Nets trading Dorian Finney-Smith for John Collins

A recent mock trade proposed by Josh Buckhalter of Heavy.com has the Brooklyn Nets trading Dorian Finney-Smith and others for John Collins.

The Brooklyn Nets have been linked to trade rumors ever since this offseason began. Given the fact that Brooklyn is in a sort of crossroads right now in terms of where the organization should go. the Nets have been in mock trades for the team to get better position to win now or to rebuild.

One of the players that have been discussed as trade candidates for the Nets is versatile forward Dorian Finney-Smith. Finney-Smith, 30, came to the Nets in the Kyrie Irving trade and since the former Florida Gator arrived in Brooklyn, he has been as advertised other than his shooting.

Brooklyn has also been linked to possibly trading for Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins since the Hawks have been trying to deal Collins away for awhile now. Atlanta is trying to put more shooting around Trae Young and Dejounte Murray and Collins does not help in that department much. This mock trade proposed by Josh Buckhalter of Heavy.com could solve issues for both the Nets and the Hawks:

Nets still interested in Atlanta’s John Collins; could send Ben Simmons to ATL in trade

According to Sean Deveney of heavy.com, an NBA executive told him that the Brooklyn Nets are still interested in Atlanta’s John Collins.

The Brooklyn Nets are still curious if they can acquire Atlanta Hawks big man John Collins in a trade, according to Sean Deveney of heavy.com. This news isn’t particularly surprising given that there were reports during the season that Brooklyn was interested in trading for Collins in an effort to improve its depth in the frontcourt.

In Deveney’s piece, he says that an NBA executive spoke to him about Brooklyn’s interest in getting players who can score and what it would take for the Nets to get Collins from the Hawks. The executive pointed out, according to Deveney, that if Brooklyn wants to make any substantial improvements this offseason, they have to find a way to get rid of injured star Ben Simmons.

Simmons had a rough 2022-2023 season as he played in just 42 games due to a variety of injuries related to his back and knees, including a nerve impingement in his back that ended his season prematurely. Collins had a similar determination of his season as Atlanta was reportedly trying to trade Collins throughout this season because of his odd fit for how the Hawks wanted to run their offense combined with the fact that Collins seemed out of place as a floor-spacer for Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

Deveney notes that both players have similar standing in the NBA, but that Collins is more available compared to Simmons. Both have unattractive contracts as Simmons is owed $78 million over the next two seasons while Collins is owed the same amount of the next three seasons with the third year being a player option. Here’s some of what the league executive said about the situation per Deveney:

“The Nets want some guys who can score, and (Collins) can score. But, the only way they (the Nets) can really do something big, can really get someone who can score in there, is if they can get a taker for Ben Simmons,’ one league executive told Heavy Sports. ‘There aren’t a lot of teams where that would make sense, but Atlanta is one of them, because you need to build a defensive group around Trae Young. Now, if you’re the Nets, you still have to convince Atlanta that Simmons wants to play. Obviously, that is the question around him right now.’

‘The Nets like Collins, they had interest there even before they blew up the team, they’re still curious but, they would have to do more than just Simmons in that kind of deal,’ the executive said. ‘You’d be looking at taking back (Bogdan) Bogdanovic’s deal if you’re Brooklyn and giving up a Royce O’Neale or Dorian Finney-Smith. Maybe too high a price, and maybe that is why they wind up holding onto Simmons in the end. They also have to ask, are you going to play Cam Johnson at the 4 permanently, can you play him with a big guy like Collins? But both teams are kind of in a holding pattern and even though it’s scary to do something big, that’s the kind of thing it will take.'”

Ranking the 15 best players who surprisingly stayed put at the NBA trade deadline

Zach LaVine and Pascal Siakam are staying put. Who else doesn’t have to relocate?

The NBA’s trade deadline was one of the most exciting in recent memory, with multiple former MVP winners and several All-Stars moved.

But there were also quite a few players around the league who heard their name in trade rumors over the past few weeks but now return to the same team now that the deadline has passed.

While there were some big moves, some teams (e.g. Raptors and Bulls) were expected to blow it up but decided against it. There were whispers that some big-name players were headed to new homes, but only some actually have to relocate.

These were the 15 best players who were rumored to get traded but will instead stay put for at least the remainder of the season:

All the players linked to the Miami Heat in trade rumors

The Miami Heat are usually one of the more active teams ahead of the trade deadline every season. They’ve made a mid-season deal in each of the previous five years, ranging from small financially motivated deals to ones involving rotation players.

This season they seemed primed to at least make a small deal, such as one involving Dewayne Dedmon. As mentioned in HoopsHype’s trade guide, the Heat are just $192,895 below the luxury tax and could use some more breathing room so they can do other things around the margins, such as converting Orlando Robinson to a standard contract.

But knowing the Heat, they’ll always be in the mix for adding players who can improve the roster since they’ve been committed to chasing a title since bringing in Jimmy Butler. Depending on the player, they will have the challenge of coming up with a framework that sends trade partners assets while also remaining below the luxury tax. Miami can trade up to three first-round picks now which are likely reserved for an All-Star pursuit. They also have just three second-round picks to offer in smaller scaled deals.

Below is a list of players they’ve been linked to and what a potential framework for them could look like.

Ranking the 20 most interesting NBA players who could get traded and where each may go

A look at the players who could be dealt by Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.

The NBA trade deadline is one week from Thursday, and while it might seem quieter than normal, there could still be a lot of activity.

Even if there isn’t a looming blockbuster move like when the Nets and Sixers swapped James Harden and Ben Simmons last season, there are teams around the league that could have an entirely different roster before the beginning of the All-Star break.

While there are some obvious sellers (e.g. Pistons, Hornets, Spurs, Rockets), others (e.g. Raptors, Pacers, Jazz) have slightly less clear intentions.

Based on the latest rumors and intel provided by insiders around the NBA, these are the players considered most likely to get traded — and where each player is rumored to go.

But remember: The trade deadline is always full of surprises. No one in the league predicted the Kings would have traded Tyrese Haliburton last season! So in addition to these players, expect the unexpected.

Trade rumor rankings: D’Angelo Russell, John Collins and more

HoopsHype ranks the five players who have appeared most often in trade rumors, led by D’Angelo Russell and John Collins this week.

It’s time for another installment of our trade rumor rankings series, an important one considering it’s our first with under one month to go until the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

For those unfamiliar, in our trade rumor rankings series, we rank the five players who have appeared most often in trade rumors over the past week as judged by appearances on our trade rumors page.

Although many expect a quiet trade deadline with so many teams in the running for a playoff spot, it’s always smart to expect the unexpected in the NBA with regards to trades.

With some very interesting players to discuss, let’s jump right into the action.

Marc Stein: Hawks’ John Collins allowed to seek trade; could be joining Nets

Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins allowed to seek trade; could be calling Brooklyn home

Atlanta Hawks forward John Collins’ representatives have been allowed by the Hawks’ front office to seek a trade on their own, according to a report by Marc Stein on Saturday. This move makes it easier for Collins to find his way to the Brooklyn Nets since he’s allowed to seek a trade by his own requirements, not Atlanta’s.

Ultimately, the Hawks have to want to do the trade for it to get done, but Collins and his representatives wouldn’t necessarily have to keep Atlanta in mind. It has been reported throughout this season that Atlanta has been looking to trade Collins as they look to go into a different direction with building their team around Trae Young and Dejounte Murray.

Brooklyn has expressed interest in Collins throughout this season as they have been constantly looking for help in the frontcourt. Even though center Nic Claxton has been having a great season as a possible DPOY candidate, he is the only true big on the team and that could hurt the Nets come playoff time. Marc Stein reports how this recent news about Collins came to pass:

“In recent weeks, league sources say, Atlanta has blessed John Collins’ representatives to do their own searching for a deal construction that enables Collins to move on to a long-anticipated new address after constant trade speculation involving the sixth-year forward stretching across multiple transaction cycles. That widely expected deal obviously hasn’t materialized yet, while Atlanta’s front office is only just emerging from the throes of the sort of in-season overhaul you rarely see thanks to the sudden transfer of power from Travis Schlenk to Landry Fields and Nick Ressler (son of Hawks owner Tony Ressler). As has been reported for weeks now, varying degrees of interest in Collins have been registered by Washington, Utah, Brooklyn and Indiana.”

We are a month away from this year’s trade deadline and candidates to be moved are starting to emerge. There are several players who are having down years compared to previous seasons and could potentially benefit from a change of scenery. Some of these players are miscast in new situations while others have seen their roles reduced by big changes to their team’s roster. While some of these players haven’t been explicitly reported to be trade candidates, their respective teams are probably willing to listen to offers for them.

Here are some players who could benefit from being traded to a new team…

John Collins got stuck under the Bulls’ pile after Ayo Dosunmu hit a game-winner and the internet thought it was hilarious

Poor, poor John Collins

Seeing someone hit a game-winner against your favorite team is always a heartbreaking experience.

Now, take that heartbreaking experience and multiply it by 10. I imagine that’s what it feels like to have a game-winner go against you while playing an NBA basketball game. Particularly one in the regular season — the playoffs probably make that a bit worse.

Now, if just seeing the game-winning shot hit against you is that bad, imagine becoming part of the celebration. That has to be infuriating.

That’s what happened to John Collins on Thursday after Ayo Dosunmu hit a game-winning putback shot against Collins’ Hawks. He tripped over Dosunmu in the celebration and they both fell to the ground. The entire Bulls roster rushed Dosunmu and pilled in on him to celebrate the win.

Collins was stuck. It was such a wild scene.

Now, this looks hilarious to all of us. But to Collins? I’m sure he was under there ready to hulk out. Luckily, Dejounte Murray noticed where he was and came over to help him out.

But, man. What a situation to be in. I cannot imagine. Fans had so many things to say about this.

Every NBA trade rumor you need to pay attention to, starting with Russell Westbrook’s future with the Lakers

Could Russell Westbrook be part of the Lakers’ long-term plan?

It’s December 15 and the NBA’s real trade season is unofficially here.

Teams have been able to make trades since the offseason, of course. But starting today, players free agents who signed deals in the offseason are able to be traded. That opens up the NBA’s trade market even more. It’s why December 15 is so important.

With that in mind, there are already a ton of trade rumors swirling around the NBA. There are still a couple of months to go before the NBA’s trade deadline, so nothing really seems imminent. But there are some things swirling out there that are worth paying attention to.

Here is every trade rumor you should be paying attention to so far.
