Bednarik Award watch list includes key pair of Nittany Lions

Penn State has more Chuck Bednarik Awards than any other school. Will either of these two players add another to the list?

As Penn State opened training camp to prepare for the 2022 college football season, a handful of players were recognized on watch lists for some individual honors in 2022. The Maxwell Football Club unveiled its watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, and two players from Penn State appeared on the watch list.

Senior safety [autotag]Ji’Ayir Brown[/autotag] and redshirt junior cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] were recognized on the Bednarik Award watch list.

[autotag]Dan Connor[/autotag] is the most recent Penn State player to take home the Bednarik Award. He did so in 2007 to make it three consecutive seasons a Penn State player won the award. [autotag]Paul Posluszny[/autotag] won the award in 2005 and 2006 and is one of two all-time winners to win the award multiple times. Current Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald is the only other player to win multiple Bednarik Awards. He did so in 1995 and 1996, the first two seasons the award was presented.

In addition to Posluszny and Connor, Penn State also saw [autotag]LaVar Arrington[/autotag] win the award in 1999 to boost Penn State’s total to four Bednarik Awards. No other school has more than two Bednarik Award winners (Northwestern, Georgia, LSU, and Alabama each have two Bednarik award winners).

Last year’s recipient of the Bednarik Award was Georgia defensive tackle Jordan Davis. The last Big Ten player to win the award was Chase Young of Ohio State in 2019.

Top three NFL draft-eligible cornerbacks in the Big Ten for 2022

A look at what could be the three most draft-eligible cornerbacks in the Big Ten heading into 2022. #B1G

It is never too early to talk about the NFL Draft, and one of the most polarizing and fun positions to discuss is the cornerback position. The Ohio State football program makes a solid argument as DBU (or BIA as it may), but Penn State also has an extremely impressive resume with names like Rich Gardner, David Macklin, and Paul Lankford.

Obviously, we have to have one Buckeye stud on this list and he will be hoping to land at the top of the NFL draft like other former Ohio State legends like Jeff Okudah, Damon Arnette, and Denzel Ward.  We also have a rare Rutgers appearance on this list, but let’s dive in.

AWARD TRACKER: Every Penn State Player on a preseason award watch list

What Penn State players are on college football watch lists in 2022?

Penn State has always been a program with rich history and with plenty of awards in the program’s history. Players like [autotag]Paul Posluszny[/autotag], [autotag]Saquon Barkley[/autotag], and [autotag]Carl Nassib[/autotag] are all recent players with awards given out by different establishments.

This year we are seeing a ton of Penn State players named to preseason watch lists. Both sides of the ball are well represented headlined by players [autotag]Sean Clifford [/autotag]and [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag]. Both players are up for offensive and defensive player of the year awards but there is more hardware the Nittany Lions could bring home.

Now, being on award watch lists are a great thing but the season still needs to be played out. For the time being though with fall camps just around the corner, they do give Penn State fans a lot of optimism as they head into a critical year in the program’s history.

Penn State Top 25 players of 2022: Joey Porter Jr.

Joey Porter Jr. is easily one of the top players on Penn State’s roster in 2022.

Penn State’s roster for the 2022 season has a good mix of returning veterans and experience and fresh new faces expected to jump in and contribute this fall. Nittany Lions Wire will be taking a look at 25 of the most important players on the roster for the 2022 season all throughout the month of July by profiling one player each day.

[autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] has built a complete team at Penn State, not many programs can say that. What he and his staff do best is develop talent, yeah it is fun to get 5-star recruits but they get coached the same as walk-ons. Thanks to that approach we have seen a major influx of talent to the NFL and across the entire roster.

One major project that has proven to be more than just his father’s name is [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] What he has turned into is a complete corner who can help in many coverages and he has the big frame of his famous NFL father. All of that combined has Penn State with a special corner roving the field for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State football’s top 10 NIL player values in 2022

How Penn State football players stack up in NIL value according to On3

The entire college football landscape has been changed by name, image, and likeness opportunities finally being granted to all student-athletes. While some of the NIL stories surfacing around the country have certainly raised some valid questions about the future of the sport and how the NCAA handled, or mishandled, the entire situation, the bridge to this new era of college sports has officially been crossed and there may be no turning back.

A number of Penn State student-athletes have already taken advantage of the NIL possibilities they have had presented to them, including national champion wrestler Roman Bravo-Young. But how much is each football player’s NIL value entering the 2022 season?

That is where On3 comes in handy. In addition to covering recruiting in the traditional sense, On3 specializes in monitoring NIL values for players around the country. These values can change at any point in time, but here are the top 10 NIL values for Penn State players currently on the roster or committed in the Class of 2023 heading into the 2022 season.

Noticeably absent from this current snapshot of NIL values is freshman running back [autotag]Nick Singleton[/autotag], who already has his first NIL deal in place. But it may be safe to imagine Singleton will pop up on this list once he gets rolling.

Parker Washington gets some NFL draft love from On3

On3 says this Penn State player is not receiving enough NFL draft hype for 2023

It is never too late to get started looking forward to the 2023 NFL draft. As the mock drafts have already started to make the rounds for the way-too-early draft projections, Penn State cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] is easily the Penn State player with the most draft hype in the next draft cycle. But wide receiver [autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] is certainly on the radar as a potential early-round draft selection for some.

On3 recently profiled six players from around the Big Ten that are “lesser-hyped,” as they termed it. Washington is in a good position to make a name for himself as the Nittany Lions offense attempts to replace a first-round talent in Jahan Dotson. Dotson was selected by the Washington Commanders in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, and Washington has already embraced the challenge he faces this upcoming season of stepping his game up.

Truth is, Washington may not have a whole lot he needs to improve. Washington, at times, had arguably better performances than Dotson last season and he compiled a highlight reel that is worthy of being respected among some of the best receivers in the nation. Penn State has also developed a positive track record for wide receivers at the next level with Allen Robinson, Chris Godwin, and now Dotson. Still, Washington may be flying slightly under the radar for many going into this next draft cycle.

Here is what On3 had to say about Washington’s draft grade;

Parker Washington is set to replace Washington Commanders first-round pick Jahan Dotson as Penn State’s No. 1 receiver. Washington (5-10, 212), was second on the team last season with 64 catches, 820 yards and four touchdowns.

Washington is expected to be the top wide receiver for Penn State and quarterback Sean Clifford in 2022. The addition of [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] and the continued development of [autotag]Keandre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] makes for a solid receiver trio for offensive coordinator [autotag]Mike Yurcich[/autotag] to experiment with.

PFF ranks Parker Washington among top receivers in 2023 NFL draft

PFF mentions Penn State WR Parker Washington as one of the top slot receivers in the 2023 NFL draft pool

Penn State cornerback [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] has been receiveing plenty of draft hype for the 2023 NFL draft class as the 2022 college football season approaches. Porter is viewed by some as a potential first-round draft pick in next year’s NFL draft, which would certainly raise the bar for Penn State’s program when it comes to cornerbacks. But now a wide receiver is receiving some pretty positive draft hype entering the upcoming college football season.

[autotag]Parker Washington[/autotag] was ranked as one of the top 10 wide receiver draft prospects for the 2023 NFL draft recently by Pro Football Focus. PFF noted that the departure of [autotag]Jahan Dotson[/autotag], a first-round pick of the Washington Commanders in the 2022 NFL draft, should lead to a more productive season from Washington, and that should only continue to boost his draft stock going into the 2023 draft season.

Washington has already challenged himself to take the next steps forward as he becomes the likely top target for quarterback [autotag]Sean Clifford[/autotag] in the Penn State offense in 2022. It is not as though Washington has much to prove though. The junior wide receiver has already assembled quite the highlight reel of incredible catches and there were even some games where Washington had more of an impact on the game than Dotson.

From PFF;

He’s only been a slot receiver, and that’s where he profiles in the NFL. At 5-foot-10, 207 pounds, he’s got an Amari Rodgers-esque body type that’s more akin to a running back. That serves him well after the catch, where he broke 16 tackles last season.

Much like Dotson, Washington also possesses Venus flytrap hands. He’s dropped only five passes on 105 catchable targets in his collegiate career, with numerous highlight-reel snags mixed in.

With his physical playstyle, reliable hands and yards-after-catch ability, Washington is the early favorite for the best pure slot in the draft class.

It will be fun watching Washington play another season with the Nittany Lions in the meantime. With Dotson gone, Washignton figures to be the team’s leading receiver but the addition of [autotag]Mitchell Tinsley[/autotag] from Western Kentucky and the continued development of [autotag]KeAndre Lambert-Smith[/autotag] does give Penn State three receivers it can do some damage with this fall.

Interesting 2023 mock draft projects a major QB wild card to the Lions

The latest 2023 mock draft from Draft Wire projects a major QB wild card and the son of an NFL standout to the Lions

The latest 2023 NFL mock draft from our friends at Draft Wire is now out, and it’s not the typical paint-by-numbers offseason mock.

Remember: Summer mock drafts are more about players to know and watch during the upcoming college football season than they are meant to be accurate projections. That’s why this mock from Draft Wire editor Luke Easterling is so intriguing. The projection for the Lions’ top pick is a quarterback not many have even heard of.

With the No. 5 overall pick–based on current Super Bowl odds–the Lions snag Washington State QB Cam Ward. No, not the NHL goalie. This Cam Ward is a transfer from FCS-level Incarnate Word, where he posted some video game-type offensive numbers in two seasons. I haven’t seen Ward play yet, but here’s what Easterling offers on the 6-2, 223-pound passing phenom,

The Lions punted on the 2022 quarterback class, likely hoping to land a better prospect at the top of next year’s draft. Ward looked like he was playing NCAA Football 14 on rookie mode at Incarnate Word, and if he can do anything similar in the Pac-12, he could easily end up warranting a top-five pick.

The other first-round pick is a very familiar name. Picking at No. 28 overall with the Rams’ selection via trade, the projection is Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Yes, he’s the son of longtime NFL pass rushing demon Joey Porter and he plays cornerback with the same mentality his father did in his heyday with the Steelers. Porter Jr. is a player I expect to rise well above No. 28 overall, but that’s part of the fun of the summer season mock drafts like this one.

Giants select QB Bryce Young in PFN’s latest 2023 mock draft

In the latest 2023 mock draft from Pro Football Network, the New York Giants select QB Bryce Young and CB Joey Porter Jr.

For some reason or another, there has been an influx of 2023 mock drafts already this year. And when it comes to the New York Giants, each projection has been exactly the same: Kentucky quarterback Will Levis.

But Pro Football Network finally — mercifully — bucked that trend this week when Oliver Hodgkinson released his most recent mock. However, he did keep the Giants in the quarterback camp.

7) New York Giants: Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

After making additions to their WR room and offensive line this spring, if the New York Giants are selecting in the Top 10 again next April then we may finally have the answer to whether Daniel Jones is the long-term future of the franchise. There’s only so many consecutive seasons of failure that you can file away under “giving him a fair chance to succeed.”

Alabama QB Bryce Young should give the Giants more than a fighting chance to succeed. While he’ll battle size concerns during the 2023 NFL Draft cycle, Young is a born leader who is more than up to the task of leading a team under extreme pressure. Young’s poise for his age is uncanny. Not only does he possess sufficient arm strength to drive the ball downfield, but his ball placement is frequently impeccable.

The selection of Young comes with C.J. Stroud off the board. All other quarterbacks were available, which is another new wrinkle to PFN’s latest mock. That had not been the case previously.

Finally, in Round 2, the Giants address an undeniable need with the selection of Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

Joey Porter Jr. named preseason All-American by Phil Steele

Phil Steele included Joey Porter Jr. on his preseason All-American list.

The start of the new college football season is now just months away and it will be here before we all know it. This is the time of the offseason when the transition to preseason coverage really begins ramping up as preseason magazines begin making the rounds. One of those magazines is published by Phil Steele, who always does a terrific job with in-depth coverage of every team in the country.

Steele has also put together his preseason All-American teams for the upcoming season, but just one Penn State player made the four-team cut. [autotag]Joey Porter Jr.[/autotag] was named to Phil Steele’s 3rd Team All-American team.

Porter Jr. is generally considered the top NFL prospect on the Penn State roster going into the 2022 season, and it may not be shocking to see he is the only Nittany Lion on any of Steele’s preseason-All-American teams. Porter Jr. is considered one of the top cornerback prospects in the 2023 NFL draft pool, and he could be Penn State’s highest-drafted cornerback in program history if he has a good season.

Porter Jr. recently was named to the preseason second-team All-Big Ten, joining a number of Penn State players on the all-Big Ten preseason teams released by Athlon Sports.
