Vikings waive two more, including surpise at cornerback

Fans will be disappointed to see who the Vikings cut

Editors note: NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero released a correction five minutes after publishing that NaJee Thompson hasn’t been waived.

The Minnesota Vikings have continued to make roster moves. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Vikings have waived CB NaJee Thompson and CB Joejuan Williams. KPRC2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson also reported that the Vikings waived WR Thayer Thomas.

Thomas was not expected to make the roster. He had muffed two punts over the course of the preseason and did not show the requisite juice to separate from NFL corners consistently.

The two that did come as a surprise were cornerbacks Williams and Thompson.

Williams came in and was the most experienced player in the system that Brian Flores runs. He played relatively well during the preseason and was getting first-team reps during nickel situations on multiple occasions.

Thompson was a fan favorite for his ability as a punt gunner. A player that both loves and thrives on special teams, Thompson made multiple plays on special teams that opened eyes. He is a likely practice squad candidate, as is Thomas.

Former Patriots CB Joejuan Williams shares thoughts on joining Vikings

Joejuan Williams has already made a Patriots connection in Minnesota.

Former New England Patriots cornerback Joejuan Williams is starting a new chapter in his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings.

The 2019 second-round draft pick is hoping a new location will help him change the narrative, which has mostly been that of a draft bust for the Patriots. He’ll have no shortage of opportunities on a Vikings defense that ranked second-worst against the pass in the 2022 season.

Former Patriots defensive assistant Brian Flores will also be overseeing things as the new Vikings defensive coordinator. So this could be Williams’ best shot at turning a corner.

“I’m very excited. I’m very thankful and blessed for the opportunity,” said Williams. “The overall history here has been amazing, just from the greats who came through this organization. Even the ties with coach Flores from the Patriots organization, definitely some similarities there. We had great conversations, and I’m really looking forward to playing for him.”

The Patriots are going through a bit of a transition of their own in the defensive backfield with Devin McCourty retiring and Jalen Mills moving from cornerback to safety.

As of right now, the cornerback position will be spearheaded by Jonathan Jones, Jack Jones and Marcus Jones. And the team will likely also add help in the upcoming NFL draft.

They’ll certainly need it to withstand the AFC East’s juggernaut offenses.

We are just 10 days away from the NFL Draft and the Minnesota Vikings haven’t stopped making moves. On Monday, they agreed to terms with cornerback Joejuan Williams on a contract likely at the minimum.

We will also talk about the second-annual All-Forno Team. Eight players made the squad this year and we will talk about why they did.

Finally, the betting odds for who the Vikings will take at the 23rd overall pick. With them likely to trade out of the selection, what can we gather from this? Finally, we will finish the show with our second to last mock draft. How will the Vikings fare in this exercise?

All of that and more live at 6 pm central or on demand on The Real Forno Show on the Vikings 1st & SKOL YouTube Channel.

Former promising Patriots second-round draft pick signs with Vikings

This pending Patriots free agent is trying his luck with another team.

Four years ago, Joejuan Williams joined the New England Patriots with hopes of being the team’s next lockdown cornerback in the making behind Stephon Gilmore and J.C. Jackson.

The 2019 second-round NFL draft pick held his own when going toe-to-toe with the best receivers in the country in the SEC. He was a rising star believed to be New England’s next franchise piece on the defensive side of the ball.

The Patriots waited, waited and waited.

Unfortunately, Williams never lived up to his potential in New England, and now, he’s headed to the Minnesota Vikings in an attempt to write a new chapter in his NFL story.

The Patriots have made up for busting on the Williams pick by landing a couple of steals at the cornerback position after selecting Marcus Jones in the third round and Jack Jones in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft.

As for Williams, who only has one NFL start in his career, he’ll try to find his footing with a Vikings team still searching for answers on the defensive side of the ball.

Minnesota Vikings agree to terms with CB Joejuan Williams

Just 10 days ahead of the NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings fortified their cornerback room and signed Joejuan Williams.

The Minnesota Vikings have fortified their cornerback room ahead of the NFL draft. The team announced on their Twitter account that they have signed former New England Patriots CB Joejuan Williams.

A second-round pick of the Patriots out of Vanderbilt in 2019, Williams has extensive experience in the defense that the Vikings will be running under Brian Flores this season. In his career, Williams has played in 36 games. He has 44 tackles and eight passes defended in his career.

He did miss the entire 2022 season due to a shoulder injury suffered during training camp. The deal is likely to be close to the minimum due to having only started one game in his career and coming off of an injury.
