Report: Bills’ Joe Schoen ‘very interested’ in Bears GM vacancy

Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen is “very interested” in the Bears’ GM position.

The Chicago Bears are in the thick of their search for a new general manager and head coach, where there have been a diverse group of candidates through this first week.

Chicago has reached out to an impressive group of GM candidates, including Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen, who interviewed with the Bears on Sunday. And it sounds like Schoen

According to FanSided’s G.T. Bobby Thompson, Schoen is “very interested” in the Bears’ GM position.

Overall, it seems like Chicago is interested in the Bills organization as a whole, as they’re interviewing both offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Schoen currently serves as GM Brandon Beane’s assistant in Buffalo. Schoen got his start with the Carolina Panthers, where he interned and later served as a scouting assistant in 2001. He served as the Miami Dolphins assistant director of college scouting before being promoted to director of player personnel (2014-17). Schoen spent his first five years with Miami as one of the team’s national scouts.

Here’s a look at the complete list of head coach and GM candidates the Bears have requested to interview:

Bears will interview Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen on Sunday

Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen will interview with the Bears for their GM job on Sunday.

The Chicago Bears are in the middle of their search for their next head coach and general manager after firing Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace earlier this week. And there’s been quite a diverse group of candidates that they’ve requested to interview.

The expectation is that the Bears cast a wide net of candidates for a first round of video interviews. For those candidates who stand out, they’ll be invited back for an in-person interview.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears will interview Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen on Sunday. Chicago also has interviews scheduled with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier Sunday. Buffalo plays the New England Patriots in the wild-card round on Saturday, and all three candidates will interview the following day.

Bears reported second team interested in Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen

#Bears reported second team interested in #Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen:

The Buffalo Bears?

Chicago is on the hunt for a new everything after letting go general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy this week. The Bears are hitting reset after the failure to develop Mitchell Trubisky and don’t want to make the same mistake with Justin Fields.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Chicago requested an interview with Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen for their vacant general manager job. It’s now a crowded group from Buffalo waiting to talk to the Bears.

The Bears have already requested to interview Bills offensive and defensive coordinator, Brian Daboll and Leslie Frazier, respectively, for their head coach opening.

Schoen is in his fifth season in the Bills front office. He has 20 years as a member of an NFL front office. He spent seven years with Bills GM Brandon Beane in Carolina (2001-2007). Schoen interviewed for the GM opening in Carolina last season. Instead that job went to a different Bills front office member, Dan Morgan.

But Chicago isn’t the only suitor of the Bills’ AGM. Schoen is set to interview with the New York Giants on Wednesday after the retirement of general manager Dave Gettleman.

The Bears have placed inquiries around the league for permission to interview candidates. Joining Schoen on the list are Colts director of college scouting Morocco Brown, Saints assistant GM Jeff Ireland, Browns VP of Football Operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, and former Texans GM Rick Smith.

What could drive Schoen to Chicago is their interest in Daboll and Frazier. If the Bears current group want to hire a GM who is familiar with coaching candidates there is no one better than Schoen, giving Chicago a choice of an offensive and defensive mind.

Leslie Frazier has an inside track to the job as well. The former coach of the Vikings and member of the iconic 1985 Chicago Bears defense, he’s led the Bills to a top-five defense each of the last three seasons and the No. 1 defense this season.

He has been described as someone who can provide a calming presence to any situation.

But if the Bears want what’s best for their first-round quarterback then Brian Daboll’s role in the development of Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen could put him over the edge.

It’s more than likely at least one member of the Bills front office or coaching staff is poached this offseason and there’s a significant chance they end up in Chicago at this point.

Bears request interview with Bills’ Joe Schoen for GM vacancy

The Bears requested to interview Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen, who’s a trusted voice in Buffalo’s front office.

The Chicago Bears fired general manager Ryan Pace on Monday, which finds Chicago searching for their next GM.

Chairman George McCaskey, President/CEO Ted Phillips and Hall of Fame executive Bill Polian will be conducting the GM search for the Bears, where they’ve already started lining up interviews.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears have requested an interview with Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen for their GM vacancy.

Chicago has now inquired about three members of the Bills — Schoen, offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

The Bears have also requested interviews with Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds, Colts director of college scouting Morocco Brown, Browns VP of Football Operations Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Browns VP of Player Personnel Glenn Cook.

Giants GM search: Interview list up to five names

The New York Giants general manager search is off to a hot start with five names on the interview list — four from outside the organization.

Dave Gettleman unceremoniously announced his retirement on Monday, which thrust the New York Giants into a general manager search.

Led by co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, the Giants hit the ground running. They requested interviews with Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen and Kansas City Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles.

It was also reported that the Giants would interview in-house assistant general manager Kevin Abrams.

But the Giants didn’t stop there. After interviewing just four candidates in 2017 prior to hiring Gettleman, the team has already requested five total interviews this time around.

In addition to Schoen, Poles and Abrams, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that the Giants have requested interviews with Tennessee Titans vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden and director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort.

Ossenfort is another name we’ve frequently written about in recent weeks:

Monti Ossenfort is the director of player personnel for the Titans and spent last season interviewing for general manager positions. He is an up-and-coming executive in football and has helped the Titans be one of the most dominant teams in the AFC over the past few seasons.

Ossenfort earned a second interview with the Panthers last year for the general manager position and this may be the year he finally is able to achieve that role but for the Giants.

Cowden has spent the last six seasons in Tennessee, where he began as the director of player personnel. Prior to that, he spent 16 seasons with the Carolina Panthers where he crossed paths with Dave Gettleman. He climbed the ladder from area scout to director of college scouting.

Bills’ assistant GM Joe Schoen to interview with Giants

Schoen to interview with the #Giants. The #Bills assistant GM did talk to teams also offseason as well:

It was expected that the Buffalo Bills’ assistant coaches will see their fair share of interviews around the NFL this offseason.

Now an assistant front-office member has joined in on the fun early this winter.

According to several reports including Giants Wire, Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen will be one of the first to interview for the New York Giants’ vacant general manager position.

The update on Schoen comes only hours after New York’s GM in Dave Gettleman announced his retirement from the NFL.

While that term is being tossed out there, it is assumed by many that Gettleman was going to be removed from his post regardless. The Giants had struggled under his watch for the past several seasons and his “retirement” was allowed by the team as a way for him to bow out gracefully.

Regardless, Schoen will be interviewed and Buffalo is in danger of losing their right-hand man next to general manager Brandon Beane.

As referenced, many expect Bills assistant coaches, namely offensive and defensive coordinators Brian Daboll and Leslie Frazier, respectively, to talk to other teams this offseason. Schoen should not come as a surprise, either.

Last offseason, Schoen was a candidate for the Carolina Panthers then-vacant general manager post but he was not hired in the end.

Interestingly, the Panthers twists only begin there.

Prior to joining the Bills, Beane was Gettleman’s assistant GM in Carolina. Gettleman then eventually landed with the Giants and now Beane’s No. 2 could be the one to replace Gettleman. Schoen himself also held early front-office roles in Carolina.

Schoen came to the Bills via the Miami Dolphins where he was  their player personnel director. Beane made Schoen his first hire when he was appointed to his position in 2017.

Per Giants Wire, Kansas City Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles will also interview in New York.

Stay tuned to Bills Wire throughout the winter as we will provide all updates regarding Buffalo assistants and front-office members that are connected to other NFL teams.

Report: Giants request interview with Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen

The New York Giants have requested to interview Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen for their vacant GM job.

The retirement of general manager Dave Gettleman has the New York Giants jumping right into their search for his replacement.

On Monday, the team requested to interview Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schoen is one of several candidates the Giants reportedly intend to interview. We wrote this about him previously:

Joe Schoen is a member of the Buffalo Bills’ executive department and currently works as the assistant GM. He was hired in 2017 and since then, the Bills have been one of the best teams in the AFC. Last season, the Bills went as far as the AFC Championship Game, which was the deepest run the team has had in over 20 years.

Schoen learned under Brandon Beane (one of the most successful general managers in football) and would make a valuable hire for the Giants this offseason.

To be clear, Schoen is currently Brandon Beane’s assistant in Buffalo. Beane, if you recall, was Gettleman’s assistant GM in Carolina. When Gettleman was fired in Carolina, he was scooped up by the Giants while Beane was hired by Buffalo.

Schoen also began his career with the Panthers and then joined the Miami Dolphins as their director of player personnel from 2014-17.

GM candidates the Giants could consider if they fire Dave Gettleman

With the New York Giants likely to part ways with general manager Dave Gettleman, here are several potential options to replace him.

The New York Giants are likely to move on from general manager Dave Gettleman following the season. Whether he’s fired or retires remains to be seen but either way, Big Blue will be thrust into another GM search.

If the Giants are firm in their commitment to head coach Joe Judge, that may thin out their pool of options. It may also strengthen the likelihood of landing a new GM that has previous ties to Judge.

Is that good or bad? We’ll let you decide.

With a GM swap all but a certainty, here’s a look at several potential options who could replace Gettleman in 2022 and beyond.
